ITunes sees existing iPhone as a new device!

Hi, my first post here but I have been lurking for some time!
A friend asked me to update his and his wife's iPhone's (both 3GS) to iOS 5 (currently on 4.2.1). I popped round to do it this but every time I plug his iPhone in, iTunes sees it as a new device and wants to either set it up as a complete new iPhone or use the backup of his wife's iPhone or kids iPod touch to restore it.  It can't find a previous backup for the device despite the fact that the iPhone was set up on that PC.  It would appear they've never previously updated their phones since originally setting them up but all the same, I'd expect iTunes to recognise the iPhone?
Has anybody else had this happen before? Obviously I want to take a backup before installing iOS 5 but if I let iTunes set it up as a new device will it wipe the phone or will it recognise there's stuff already on there and back it up? Apps and music aren't an issue as they're in iTunes but he needs his contacts, SMS etc restored.  AIUI If Apple replace a phone they back up the old one first and restore it so how do they do it?  I don't want to click on 'Continue' and have iTunes wipe the iPhone!
As a test I've just installed iTunes on an XP PC that I've never connected my iPhone to before, backed up the iPhone first and plugged it in.  iTunes reconised the iPhone and know everything about it, however I'm not sure if this is because I've already upgraded my phone to iOS 5 and it's backed up to iCloud?
I've tried Googling but not found anything useful so far.  Any help would be appreciated!

Bump!  Anybody got any ideas on this at all please?

You need to perform a reset (settings>General, scroll to bottom of screen).  This will delete everything on the device.  Then connect to iTunes and it will offer to perform a reset from either iTunes backup or iCloud.  Take it from there.

  • ITunes still treating iPhone 4 as new device

The only problem I'm having with my new 4 is whenever I go to sync with my computer, I get the "Welcome to your new iPhone, Let's get started" page. After clicking "continue," my regular iTunes opens as usual and everything operates like it did with my 3G. I've tried a restore on the iPhone. Haven't tried to reinstall iTunes yet. Any suggestions

Sound like you've done about everything.  If your other phones sync with this computer that would indicate that your computer is fine.  (If you aren't syncing these other phones with this computer I would disable automatic syncing in iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent... and connect one to see if it is recognized.)  And if you've tried cables known to sync your other phones that would seem to narrow things down to your phone.  At that point I would start to suspect the dock connector at the bottom of the phone, and would examine it closely for damage (as well as cleaning it with a dry toothbrush).
If you can, also try connecting it to a different computer with iTunes installed to see if it is recognized (again trying to isolate whether it's the computer or the phone).  If you do this be sure to first disable automatic syncing (in iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent...) on any other computer you connect it to.

  • HT1766 How to restore the iPhone as a new device?

I am unlocking my phone through Apple & the mobile company, here are the steps I need to follow. I am not sure how to restore my phone as a new device!?
    iTunes
    1.    Back up the device using iTunes.
    2.    Restore the iPhone as a new device to complete the unlock.
    3.    Restore the iPhone again from Back up file to get all the data back.

    Thank you for your reply.
I see. So When it asks me would you like to set it up as a
    1. New Device,
    2. Back Up from iTunes or
    3. Back up from iCloude
I should select as a New Device? And re-use my current apple ID? I selected option 2 and didn't get the message "Congradulation, your iPhone is now unlocked"

  • How do you sync an existing iPhone to a new iTunes install?

I had to reformat my MBP to remove Lion and go back to Snow Leopard, but now I have a question with iTunes.
I loaded my whole library of songs and apps into the new install of iTunes, but now I need to sync my iPhone 4 and iTunes is trying to overwrite ALL of my apps and their data. I don't want to loose any apps or data that is on the iPhone. So how can I sync my phone again without having the new iTunes overwrite the iPhone? I need iTunes to copy down what is on the phone FIRST and then sync. Not try to overwrite the iPhone.
    Thanks

    Ok I did all that.
However, when I got back into the iPhone settings, the Apps Tab, "Sync Apps" is still not checked. When I click on it, I get the same warning message that it will erase all apps and data on the iPhone. Is it really going to do that or will it load all my saved data from when I did "Transfer Purchases"?
I think all the apps will load back fine, but I don't want to loose all the data associated with all the apps and games.
    Thanks again!

  • Trouble connecting existing iphone content to new imac

    Hi Everyone,
Not exactly sure im posting this in the right section however i recently purchased the new i5 27" imac (previously had a stand ol PC) which i had itunes on and my iphone sync'd to. I can get my iphone to now sync with itunes on my mac however i cannot add/remove any applications or import my music from my iphone to my library on this imac...any ideas how i can do this?? I have searched the help topics but cant seem to find the answers.

Hi Tara. Start iTunes and connect your iPhone to the imac. Make sure your iPhone shows up under the Devices in the iTunes Side Bar. Go to iTunes store and sign into your iTunes account. If you haven't already done so, authorize your new computer by going to Store -> Authorize Computer. You are allowed to authorize up to 5 computers for your iTunes account. If you have reached the limit, you need to deauthorize another previous computer first before authorizing your new imac. Once done, go to File -> Transfer Purchases from Tara's iPhone. It will then transfer all your music and apps from your iPhone to your new imac.

  • Itunes thinks my iphone 4 is new, and asks to set it up, but it's not new, what should I do

    Hi everyone
Recently, itunes started popping up periodically saying that my iphone is new and asks me to set it up or to restore from backup, but it's not new, this happens both on wifi and when connected via cable, I have no idea why this is happening and don't know how to fix it.
    What should I do?

    Resetting didn't affect anything.
I haven't done anything different or changed the library.  Like any other day, I just took it off of the cradle this morning, went about my business all day and put it back on the cradle when I got home.  But now, instead of synching, it says "This computer has previously been synched with an iPhone or anohter iOS device"  and wants me to restore from a backup.
The backups it is showing me (there are 4) look suspicious because it says "last backed up: 10/16/2011 8:18 PM" but I set iTunes to back up the phone every time I dock.  So something is definitely not right with the backup.  Consequently I don't want to restore from backup until I know what happened to the latest backup.

  • If I set up my iPhone 4S as 'New Device', can I restore from my previous backup afterwards?

I need to restore my iPhone as I have forgotten my 'Restrictions Passcode'. However, I do not want to lose text messages. I know if I back up my iPhone before I restore it, the text messages will be saved on iTunes. If I restore it as a 'New Device' (which is what is required to unlock the passcode), will I then be able to sync my information (texts, music, apps, etc) that have been backed up? Please help!

Well, if it were easy to get around this, there wouldn't be much point in having a restrictions passcode to begin with. You can try something like this to extract your messages, from your backup:
    http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com/
Then achieve them on your computer.

  • Do I set up my iphone 4s as new device or restore from backup?

I have an Iphone 4 (OS 4) - upgrading to Iphone 4s (OS 5) - then I begin the set up of Iphone 4s, so I say set up as a new device or restore from a backup?
I have already backed-up and synced my Iphone 4 to Itunes (not to cloud because I didn't upgrade the old phone to OS 5).  I am scared to death to try this and when they give that choice I am not sure which to pick..any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest restore from a backup if you have the backup available.  This way settings and other items will be restored once the process is complete.
    I hope this helps!

  • How can I transfer my itunes from my iPhone to my new computer without deleting my songs off of my iPhone?

I have a new computer with new songs I have purchased. But my iPhone has almost 2,000 songs on it and I have deleted it once before by trying to transfer my songs to a new computer before. Now I am a little bit scared to even try, so... How can I transfer my songs off my iPhone onto my new computer?  Thank you!

If these are songs you have purchased with iTunes, then you start up iTunes, log in with your Apple ID, connect the phone and transfer purchases. If this is not purchased music, iTunes is not set up to work that way. Sync of music is only one way, from iTunes to Phone. That is what the backup of your computer is for.
If by some chance you did not backup your comptuer, then you would need to look into 3rd party software. See this user hint about handling that. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

  • Sync existing Iphone/Ipad with new library

    alright ,
first of all , sorry i'm asking a question that probably already haves bin answered before ... but i"m not finding the perfect one at the time (answer)
this is the question , i work for a IT company (small scale) , and at a regular base we have customers with iphones and ipads , myself i'm having both so ...
mostly of the time , we sell new computers to our customers (sorry , no imac's , mostly our customers are used to windows ...) and that comes with an issue i'm not yet found an answer to ...
so , the customer have's a iphone with data (photo's , music , apps , etc ) or ipad , that syncs to his old computer.
we sell the new one , install it , and the customer asks to sync his existing iphone , with existing data on it , to its new library ...
but then , when you plug in the iphone , the first question you get is if you want to sync to the new library , with result of loosing all data that current on the phone/pad ...
NO , i don't want that , and thats why i started this topic , i wan't someone to explain me if its possible to just move the data from the phone to the new pc ...
for the record , ussualy its from XP to Win7 ...
    thnx in advance

My guess is that you previously synced the iPhone with a different computer in the past. You will probably want to set up Home Sharing.

  • Find my iphone - Adding a new device because old one stolen.

    Hi -
I've recently had my iphone 5 stolen which was registered to my iclouds, as well as the 'Find my iphone' app.
Since being given a new iphone from an insurance claim, I have tried to register this iphone with the 'find my iphone' app but have had a little trouble doing so, as my old iphone is still registered with my iclouds and thus still associated with the app.
Obviously I don't know how to remove the app from my old device as it's no longer in my possession, so if anyone can give me a step by step to registering my new iphone with the app that would be fantastic!
    Thanks for your help guys!
    Steve

Try removing the old device in iCloud.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2702   Then add your new device.

  • How can I add new music to my iPhone from a new device without losing all the existing music?

Hello! My personal laptob that I usually use to sync my iPhone to is broke at the moment so, I've been syncing to my work computer. I have some music, not downloaded from iTunes, on the new computer that I'd like to add to my iPhone but I can't see how without iTunes deleting all my existing playlists and music from my iPhone. I can click the menu arrow on a song and then select "Add to" from the pop-up menu, then choose from "Devices" - Nathan Swain's iPhone - and it lets me, but nothing ever get's added to my iPhone. I have also authorized this computer on my iTunes account. I'm stumped!

By design, iPhone syncs or manually manages iTunes content with ONE computer at a time. Each time you switch computers, ALL iTunes content is first erased from your phone, to be replaced with the content from the new computer.
No way around this fact, other than transferring your content to the computer you normally sync with.
