ITunes sees my AppleTV, but does not sync! (firewall issue?)

Hi there...
I have been using a AppleTV (software 2.01) and Mac OS X 10.4.11 (with a Airport Express) for months without any issues at all.
Then I upgraded to a new PowerBook Pro with OS X 10.5.4 and approx. the same time my AppleTV updated to the latest version (I believe 2.1).
Suddenly my iTunes although seeing the AppleTV but WAS NOT able to sync anymore. iTunes suggested to open a specific port at the firewall...
now:
(a) if I completely disable the firewall syncing works just fine
(b) however if I want to activate my firewall I have not found out how to enable this specific port in OS X 10.5 firewall. I can open "all" ports (?) for a specific application; I tried that for iTunes but it didn't work.
Could you please help?!
thanks a lot

Hi, My iOS device (Ipad mini) only appears in iTunes while cable-connected, but does not appear after diconnect the cable. How can I Wifi sync ?
    Documents say
Whenever the computer and the iOS device are on the same network, the iOS device will appear in iTunes, and you can sync it....
But I can't see my iPad Mini in iTunes.
And my  Ipad  (Settings, General, iTunes Wifi Sinc)  shows  a message :" Sync will resume when xxx(my PC with iTunes) is available "...
Both are in the same network,
Ipad mini is is plugged in to power
. iTunes is open on the computer
    what can i Do ???

Hi Skydiver119,  and tks for four interest.
I have done exactly as you say, but it does not work for me.
You indicated  " Navigate to the info tab and scroll down. There'll be a check box for 'sync over wifi' or something to that effect. Check that box and sync to affirm your choice."
I navigated to Summary tab (not Info Tab) and checked "Sync with this ipad over Wi-Fi"
    I disconnect the wire,
and my iPad disappears from my iTunes screen.
in my iPad ->Settings -> General -> iTunes Wi-Fi Sync -> says " Sync will resume when (my PC) is available.
So, I can not sync via wi-fi
I appreciate if you can help me.

    What can I do?

The good thing about mac-centric resellers such as OWC, is they have people on staff that can answer questions without you buying things first. They also have how-to information, and instructions are included in many of their products. I saw a link to watch a DIY video in one of their pages; an example of a RAID (with its own power supply) is shown on their drives page. Also a few in there, with no power supplies, for less money.
If I were looking to backup and perhaps also have a partition for a system clone, I'd consider something like one of these: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Some ideas on the RAID backup methods appear in google search, some of the pages are ideas and concepts; and the better ones also warn about using RAID for the only backup plan.
Oh, OWC has live chat. Haven't tried it, nor have I bought anything from them. I have what appears to be two products from them, but have not used either. One is in a box as-new, but has only USB2.0 ports & my Macs needed FW400/800. It has been said their RAM is a good way to upgrade, too. But I can't confirm!
A 'RAID-ready' unit for backup may be more versatile for just that, but I have not checked into these details. I use single HDDs in powered enclosures, and usually manually make backup clones to FW drives, of bootable OS X systems. Some of the OWC raid-ready use eSATA ports so that may not be viable for a computer without them.
The unused in-box external drive I have is like the base model in the link above. However mine is USB2.0 (maybe) and won't boot my older Macs due to hardware variance; and my preference would be for FireWire options, these models do offer that. But the one I have does not. Dual 500GB HDDs, and they could be used in tandem as a RAID. That would be a choice set up in software. I'm not sure and not interested enough to read up just now.
    My backup method is not automatic, or a moving backup plan, if I don't get a move-on and make full system clones. I do make copies of photos and documents the manual way, to USB external drives; and occasionally backup to DVD or CD media. And USB flash, that helps to move files between computers without need to use file sharing via wi-fi. {Like Why fly? Walking is better exercise unless one is a bird. Squawk!}
    https://www.google.com/#q=raid+backup+mac
Depending on the ports in your Mac, you may be able to use other cables to attach between a backup or externally enclosed hard disk drive with multiple partition and bootable clone in one of them. Not sure about the Thunderbolt, and where that is the main port, adapters are required to access other devices, as allowed.
Anyway, I am going on and on, yet not really saying anything.
My ideas would not be all that interesting to follow as a backup
plan when matching available newer hardware to task, but you
can get some into better ideas if you are not in a rush. Get a
good setup and then look into more an betterer stuff.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Ipod Classic 160GB connects but does not sync to new itunes

I'm having a lot of trouble after installing the latest itunes. My iTunes picks up the ipod as a device but will not sync with it. I've tried to just sync it, ive shut down itunes and turned the ipod off and tried, i've ticked the box that says "convert higher bit rate songs to 128kps AAC" and tried to sync and unticked the box and tried as well. I have also tried going to File ->Devices->sync, and the sync button is shaded so i can't click on it. I have also reset it to factory settings and tried. I'm out of ideas, does anyone else have any?

    Hello DeclanConky
Check out the article below to troubleshoot if it is software or hardware. Try starting up in Safe Mode or try it out in another user. Also when you removed iTunes, did you remove the other associated files Apple in the specific order indicated in the second article?  Let me know if this works out or need to continue troubleshooting.

  • My iTunes recognizes my iPod but will not sync

I just had my hard drive replaced and all my music was salvaged (thankfully). All of it loaded right back into iTunes. However, when I plug in my iPod, it will charge, but will not sync. I have Windows 7 on my computer and it was working fine before.
At this point I'm frustrated and have considered using the "Sync with this iTunes Library" feature, which warns that it will erase what's on my iPod, but will presumably upload the library that exists on my computer now, right? If I do that, I shouldn't lose anything because both are the same, but maybe it will now recognize my iPod? Any suggestions?

    Hi Amy2250,
Have you tried to sync music to the iPod via the iPod subdirectory of iTunes? To do this, plug your iPod into your computer, go into iTunes, click on the iPod tab, click on 'Music' in the iPod subdirectory and select whether you want to sync your whole iTunes library or just selected songs and press sync.
Alternatively, have you tried manually transferring music onto the iPod using the 'drag and drop' method? To do that, go into iTunes with your iPod connected, click on the iPod tab, in the iTunes iPod Classic subdirectory click on the 'Summary' tab, then tick the box saying 'Manually manage music' and click save. Then, in the same subdirectory click on the 'On this iPod' tab and click on Music. Then, select the songs you want to transfer either in Finder or Windows Explorer, select the songs you want to copy to the iPod and drag them to the blank list in the 'On this iPod' area of iTunes you just opened.
    Good luck,

  • Itunes 11 for 64bit Win7 does not sync iPodTouch properly

Installed ITunes11 for 64 bit Win7 yesterday (8Dec12).  The update seemed to go well altho I saw some odd behavior and do NOT like the changes that have been made to the interface at all btw -- the new format for browsing the contents of the music library is awful.  What I discovered later was MUCH worse and that is when I discovered that my IpodTouch 4G which I had synced after updating to iTunes did not contain ANY of my videos and a mere fraction of my music and no playlists whatsoever. I did manage to get my videos back on by playing the game of checking "don't sync my videos" -- syncing (which ostensibly removed that which was already not there) -- rechecked "sync my videos" -- and then synced -- which DID restore them. I tried various strategems to get iTunes to copy over my entire music library .. managed to get part of it restored .. but no matter what I did .. not all of it.  It seems to be stuck on a few tracks that it thinks need to be copied and ignores everything else altho it DOES recognized the existence of the rest of my music library. It just won't restore it to my Ipod .. after it so rudely .. IMHO .. removed them.  This applies not just to music but playlists as well. There is something seriously wrong with this major 11.x update. One thing I'm considering doing .. after I return from a week long business trip (where I am no) is to trick ITunes into doing what it needs to do by removing all my music from the iTunes library (not the files -- just the index) -- sync to the iPod -- restore all the music to the iTunes library -- and sync again.  THAT -- or Apple produces a big fix to Itunes11.
Based on what I've seen elsewhere in the Forum .. my despair and disgust with iTunes11 is shared by others.  Hopefully, Apple tracks these forums given that there seems to be NO true mechanism for getting technical support with iTunes, except in association with an Apple device like iPod, iPodTouch etc.
Btw -- given the hideous experience with the iTunes11 update on my home machine, I will NOT permit the Itunes11 update on my office laptop -- I'll uninstall it if need be..

by the way -- wouldn't mind if people read the post I gave the link to and to confirm whether the issue really IS that the library index got corrupted during the upgrade to 11.  If that's NOT it, I don't want to waste what could be hours executing my plan:  remove all music and videos from library, sync IpodTouch4G with no music, restore music to library, restore playlists using iPodClassic that has NOT been synced to iTunes11 as reference, and then resync iPodTouch4G.  Appreciate feedback.  Thanks!
I think you are hoping to use an iPod Classic that has not been synced with iTunes 11 to restore the playlists? Frankly that sounds like it could fail (I hope I am wrong). iTunes is very picky about what will sync, in my experience (on a Mac) it doesn't want to bring playlists from devices that haven't ever been synced to that library before.
If you had synced the iPod Classic before the iTunes 11 update it may work, but I wouldn't rely on that to get all your playlists back into the desktop iTunes. You would be better off using the built in 'File > Library > Export library' feature to create a Library.xml file that contains the playlists as they exist in iTunes (I have no idea if this is the same on Windows or iTunes 11, it should still exist). You can do the same for each of the 'Movies', 'TV Shows', 'Podcasts'… sections if you are worried about keeping them intact.
It also sounds like you are contemplating deleting your files from iTunes on the PC, syncing the iPod Touch, replacing the iTunes media files & then resyncing? That also seems like overkill. You should just be able to wipe the iPod Touch & restore the files you want on there by re-syncing from the device backup (or avoiding the backup & starting afresh). The 'restore' feature of iTunes will erase & reset the device back to a clean state. If the device still fails to sync everything you know that the iTunes library is likely to be the problem.
iTunes should also allow you to create a new library (in a location you specify).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
It would make sense to create a clean library, import the Library.xml & see if that syncs correctly. You can switch back to the old library to compare if the files & playlists have been imported.
I'd suggest making a full system backup before you start to change things, and maybe contact a genius bar if you have one near. I really don't know enough about iTunes on Windows, there must also be other threads about how to recover from syncing issues on Windows.
The general rule is if the device isn't syncing correctly reset it to a clean state & start over, then move onto 'fixing' the library.
iTunes keeps backups of the library between updates, so you can revert to an older version of the library (but obviously files may have moved so the links for some tracks may be broken).

  • Itouch charges but does not sync?

I have had my ipod touch for about a year and a half. Before this, my itouch was working perfectly and syncing fine. However, I put some files from a USB stick on my itunes, and ever since then there has been problems. It did an initial sync however now, itunes does not recognise my itouch as an ipod and only charges when plugged in. When i plug my itouch in, it is registered as a camera and asks whether I would like to see photo files.
I have plugged in an old ipod and it sync's just fine. I have also gone into an Apple Store and they only suggested to close down all running apps. I have also restarted my computer and ipod. I cannot reset my itouch as it is not even recognised and does not show up on the side as a tab!
Please Help?! I am unsure whether to reinstall itunes. Also, my computer ( a dell inspiron 1520) will not download the latest version of itunes, so I think this may be the issue.

Got it to work! Here's what I did:
    -Turned off iTunes
-Disconnected the iTouch and then held both buttons to turn it off
    -Plugged in the iTouch
-Turned on the iTouch, when iTunes activated it properly sync'd all my changes.
    Hope this works for you!

  • ITunes sees the music but will not play anything

First I would like to thank anyone who addresses this issue in advance! I have been trying to figure out the problem for some time and obviously have been unsuccessful. I also apologize if it is an easy fix and I was too dimwitted to figure it out on my own.
I can open iTunes and see all of my music. I can see my playlists, purchased music and all of the music in my library. However, when I try and double-click or select play from the drop-down menu nothing happens. I even tried to purchase a new song and listen to it, but still nothing. I checked the deauthorize feature, but it is not set.
Any advise, tips or replies are appreciated!
    Thanks

you're not dimwitted. I wonder sometimes! lol
just checking on something first. when you try to
play a song in itunes, does that little
diamond-shaped thingy stay firmly stuck to the left? Yes
if so, next let's explicitly doublecheck your precise
itunes version number. in itunes, go "help > about
itunes" and wait for the version number to scroll up
from the bottom of the screen. (for example, mine
    says "itunes 6.0.5.20") 6.0.5.2
if you've got an itunes version 5.0.0.35, 5.0.1.4,
    6.0.0.18 or 6.0.1.3
... first let's check on this possibility:
iTunes for Windows: Audio files do not play in
    iTunes 5 or 6
if you've got an itunes version 6.0.2.23 or
higher, or the compatibility settings thing wasn't a
    factor for you
... then first we'll try a careful standalone QT 7.1
    reinstall.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone
installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install
from there rather than online.) switch off
antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the
    install.
    Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer
if that install goes through okay, does your itunes
play audio properly again? Yes, this did the trick!
(if you get an error message on the QT standalone
reinstall, let us know what it says. include error
message numbers if you're getting any.)
b noir I thank you so very much for being willing to share your knowledge and lending a helping hand! I am indebted to you!

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router

  • Icloud works great on ipad (2) and iphone 5, but does not sync using icloud panel on PC

I have a iPad 2 and iPhone 5, which sync perfectly with iCloud.  Recently, my iCloud on my PC quit working and I've tried re-installing, etc, but nothing seems to work.  If I enter a new contact or meeting, it will not sync with my other devices.  Help?

If photostream is not working you can
Use Explorer to open the Photo Stream Folder.
The default location normally in C:\Users\Juz\Pictures\Photo Stream\My Photo Stream
I’ve changed mine to F:\Photo\Photo Stream Download
Right click the folder, and click Propeties
You can see the Read-Only has been checked.
So, you just need to Un-Check the Read Only, and click OK.
Your photos from iPhone / iPad will transfer to your PC automatically again.

  • ITunes freezes on exit and does not sync photos to Apple TV 2

Is anyone experiencing the following problem: as of recently i have to use Ctrl-Alt-Del every time to exit from iTunes as the software always freezes on exit? Also, around the same time it no longer syncs my pictures to my Apple TV2.
Any suggestions how I can fix this? I've re-installed iTunes from scratch several times.

I am only running Windows 7 Firewall.
Okay ... let's try making sure that iTunes is listed as an exception in your firewall, as per:
[How to enable iTunes in the Windows Vista and Windows 7 Firewall|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2553]
While in there, make sure also that BonJour is being allowed full access to your network.
If they are already both listed there, try removing the current exception and then replace them with new exceptions.
(Sometimes, especially after an update of the software in question, firewall rules can "go off," so we're just trying to make sure that that hasn't happened to you.)

  • Ipod Classic - recognised but does not sync

I have a Windows 7 laptop and an iPod Classic.
I am hoping to upgrade my laptop hard drive soon - most of one partition is iTunes.
I had a problem the other day which meant that I had to move iTunes to a different drive.
iTunes then failed to pick up most of the music I have loaded.
So I manually re-pointed iTunes, artist-by-artist to the new drive.
Since then, although iTunes recognises the iPod, it won't sync.
This could be because I didn't copy over all the artists - so that there are items on the iPod that aren't on the laptop.
I have tried to sync and nothing is happening - it's like the last update before re-direct Day

I had the same problem and ended up solving it by moving my plug from a hub directly to a mb usb header which allowed itunes to see my ipod.
