Itunes sees my ipod but won't allow me to manage its contents

my fully-charged ipod is connected and itunes sees it, but everything on it is grayed out and can't be touched. i can even sync and have a new podcast move over to the ipod, but once it gets there it's grayed out and can't be touched. i can't play it. i can't delete it.
by the way, i may be able to sync podcasts, but i can't manually move anything.
i ran one of the itunes diagnostics and it said everything was fine between itunes and my ipod. no problems.
i thought it might be a memory problem on my computer because of a number of things open at once, but i've rebooted and it's not that.
like so many problems, this just showed up out of the blue, after months of no problems at all.
one last thing. the ipod works fine if i just listen to it, or have it docked in one of my players.
any ideas. i'll be grateful until next tuesday,

Check the manual for whatever backup program you used, or, if you just copied the files over, copy them that.

Ok so i bought a fifth generation ipod yesterday. it wouldnt work with my version of itunes so i downloaded 7.3. anyway when i plug it in it just blinks "do not disconnect" for hours at a time. itunes sees the ipod but wont sync with it. please help

While it is connected in iTunes, click on your iPod in the Source Frame under devices and then check the Summary tab in the frame to your right. At the bottom, under options, do you have it set to Manually Manage your music?

The simplest way to transfer everything is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.

The Mac App Store prices do not include local sales taxes. The tax is added to the total before your sale is complete. Your gift card credit total is not enough to complete the sale, so you are being given the opportunity to add a bank card that will be charged the remainder of the amount. Your other option is to get another gift card and bump up the credit balance in your account.

Playlist just scrolls through tunes at top of screen but won't allow me to play them

my playist just scrolls through each title in the list but won't allow me to stop it nor will it play anything from playlists. installed iOS6 and it worked fine until today (about a week). I haven't ever seen this happen, but if quitting apps and hard resets don't do it you might want to start clean. Are you able to run a backup of your iPad mini? If I was in your shoes, I would back up the iPad, erase the iPad and then restore the data to see if that fixes it.
Step 1 would be to back up the data (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766).
Step 2 would be to restore the iPad to factory settings (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414).
Step 3 would be to restore the backup (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766).

I rented a movie through iTunes and it downloaded but won't play. It is present in the videos app but doesn't load the picture for the movie. When I go to play it, it just opens and then closes. There is an iCloud icon that suggests the movie has not Been downloaded and when I click it it says that the movie has already been rented but not downloaded and that I need to go to downloads to manage it. It is not present in my iTunes download page however. And when I go to rent it again all I get is a watch button that directs me back to the videos app with no way to watch it.

If you are not able to play or download a movie rental on your iPad, first restart your device:
Restarting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: Reset your device only if you are unable to restart it.
Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I suspect that you are saying that you can't download/install the latest version of iTunes.
All I can say is try removing and reinstalling the Apple software using the following:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
If you have further problems with installing Itunes I suggest you post in the iTunes forum since you have an iTunes problem, not an iPod problem. Also report the wording of any error messages. What they say is importent on resolving them.

Sync works the same way it always has, connect the device, select the content desired to sync and sync.
All the media should be in iTunes already, iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
If this is a new computer, move the content from the old computer to the new computer.

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it. It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world. In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully. So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire. If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time. Must be a better way.

There are a number of other threads from people reporting a problem with a blank Updates tab in the App Store app - it looks like there is a problem at Apple's end which they need to fix.
Some posts are suggesting that you if you go into the Purchased tab in the App Store app you might be able to update the apps from there, though you will need to scroll through the list to find those with updates and individually update them.
