ITunes sees remote speakers attached to airport express, but can't connect

"An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "Airport Express". The network connection failed."
iTunes 9.1(79)
Airport Extreme Base Station
Early model Airport Express connected to remote speakers
iTunes see the speakers in the drop down menu, and the airport express is connected to my network. I restored the airport express to factory defaults and started over. Same thing. Firmware shows as being current. Express has steady green light.
Any ideas? I am getting ready for my iPad, and need to get this fixed.
Thanks in advance.

Same problem for me. Ever since I upgraded to 10.6.3 and iTunes 9.1, about once per week I'll get the error message when trying to get iTunes/Airtunes to connect to my older Airport Express (running firmware 6.3) "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker <insert speaker name here>. The network connection failed." (No error codes are given.)
Airport Utility sees the offending Airport Express just fine (and there's a green light on said AE).
Curiously, a newer AE-n, elsewhere in the house (running firmware 7.4.2) does NOT exhibit this problem.
Simply restarting the offending AE does NOT clear the problem. Restarting the main router - a Time Capsule DOES clear the problem. Alternatively, toggling off the Airtunes functionality on the offending AE, restarting it, then toggling Airtunes back on, and finally restarting it DOES clear the problem (as an alternate to restarting the router). No matter how the problem is cleared, it returns within a week. It's frustrating that the problem cannot be recreated immediately.
Probably not relevant, but the computer on which I'm running iTunes (a Mac Mini) is connected to my TC via ethernet, not wirelessly.
I've tried the suggestion of disabling ipv6. No effect.
I fear the only solution will be to scrap my older Airport Express and replace it with a newer n-model. But before I resign myself to the $100 fix, any more ideas?

I have just bought an AX for the specific purpose of streaming music to a new mini hi fi.
I have added AX to my existing wireless network without problem. Firmware updated. Latest itunes and OS.
Itunes sees the speakers attached to AX but will not connect. I keep getting "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker......An unknown error occurred (-15000).
I have updated all software, reset AX and started all over again. I have given the speakers a password.
I also try and connect using my iphone 3GS - latest software. It also sees the speakers. I get no error message but nothing plays.
Help please. I have set this up as a gift for friends and I am leaving tomorrow.

    try the following:
    1) Open System Preferences

  • ITunes (and Airfoil) can see Airport Express but can't connect in Windows XP (error -15000) - firewall problems?

I am using Windows XP Professional 2002 w/ SP3 on a Dell Latitude E4300 laptop wirelessly connecting to my Airport Express 802.11n (firmware 7.5.2).
I can see my Airport Express in iTunes 10.4.1 and can select it via the Airplay button. iTunes even detects whether or not a speaker is connected to the Airport Express. But when iTunes tries to connect, it comes back after a while saying "An error occurred while connecting to the Airplay device xxx. An unknown error occurred (error -15000)."
A similar problem happens with Airfoil from Rogue Amoeba that I use to stream music from other apps such as VideoLAN to Airport Express on the same laptop. I can see that my Airport Express is available but when Airfoil tries to connect, it comes back saying "It appears that a firewall on this computer is preventing Airfoil from connecting to xxx Airport Express. Please check your firewall settings and try again."
I've set both Airplay and iTunes as exception programs in my Windows Firewall setting, and even added TCP ports 5000 to 5005 and UDP ports 6000 to 6005 to the exceptions as recommended by Airfoil. I've also disabled Symantec Endpoint Protection that Ihave installed. The only thing I can't disable is McAfee Endpoint Encryption, since I also use the laptop at work and I don't have permission to disableMcAfee.  I use this laptop to connect wirelessly with other devices such as HP wireless printers, NAS drives and other laptops on my home network and have never had any issues, so i think that this issue is specific to the Airplay software being blocked by some firewall (I am assuming Airfoil also uses Airplay).
I've tried this on different wireless networks and I have the same issue with Windows XP on my Dell Latitude E4300. I've also set up the network with no security, but the problem doesn't go away.
I also tried downgrading iTunes to 10.3.1 but won't work. I think it's an Airplay issue, not a specific iTunes issue, since I'm facing the problem with Airfoil as well.
How do I trace what is going on that is preventing iTunes and Airfoil from streaming to the AirportExpress within Windows XP?
I also have another Dell Inspiron laptop on the same network running on Windows Vista, and have no problems streaming music from iTunes or Airfoil to the Airport Express on the same network, even when the network is WPA-2 Personal (TKIP+AES) protected (I've seen other postings where WPA has been an issue, WEP has not, but in my case, this is not an issue). Ditto with my iPad2.
    Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem with Windows 7 64bit. ITune can see AE and stream Music well. Airfoil, TuneBlade (airplay soft) can also see AE but can't connect and stream music. I ' ve already tried to setup firewall Exception list, even turning off firewall off both windows and antivirus but still got the same problem with the message 'Airfoil was unable to connect to the remote speaker " ... 's Airport Express". Please check the firewall on the computer where " ...'s Airport Express" is running and try again'. Any help would be appreciated !.

No, you cannot seperate the audio and video stream.
You can use optical audio to a sound system (I use sony sound bar) and play the audio via that.

i use itunes to play music through my airport express but sometimes the songs cut out sporatically.  a song will be playing along then all of a sudden there is intermittant music and silence. What could be causing this?

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

  • My iMac will detect Airport Express but can't read configuration? Any Suggestions?

I bought an Airport Express about 3 weeks ago.  I brought it home and set it up no problems. It was replacing an older Netgear router that gave me nothing but IP adress problems. When I bought the Express I didn't realize that DirecTV had wired a connection to my Netgear router, so now I have no way to connect my DirecTV recievers to the internet without purchasing some wifi adapter which I don't want to do.  I tried to run the cable from my modem to the Netgear router, than out from the router to the DirecTV box and another to my Aiport Express for wifi. That is where the problems started. I couldn't get anything to connect correctly, ended up switching the express to "Bridge Mode" and it seemed to work. Only I didn't have Internet, though the light was green. I tried restarting everything but to no avail.  So, I tried a reset on the Airport Express and now I have nothing.  My iMac will detect the Airport Express but when I click continue to configure it simply says "Trying to read Airport Configuration", which eventually leads to an error and nothing. Any idea what my problem could be?

Thanks. I really should have gotten back earlier. Sorry about that.
I have stopped trying to use the Airport Express. I am convinced that it just doesn't work as a device to use for Internet sharing with other computers or iPod Touches that are using Airport. I find that I can easily connect just by turning on Airport and Internet sharing on my iMac and creating a Network. When I do that my iPod connects immediately and I can use all the Internet applications.
But a Time Capsule is in my sights, and I'll use that when they finally roll out.

  • ITunes doesn't connect to remote speakers on my Airport Express?!?

Can you help me solve this technical issue? I have a Linksys wireless router with another device as a wireless repeater (to extend my wireless network). On the other end of this wireless network is my AirPort Express with the AirTunes enabled.
I can ping my AirPort Express from my iMac. But, my iTunes is not successful connecting to the speakers. Can you suggest some remedies for this? Thanks in advance.
    James

Thank you for the quick suggestions. Here are the facts:
    1) iTunes host are on the same network subnet as the AX. I can see both of them on my router. The iMac which the iTunes is running can ping the AX. In fact, the remote speaker is listed in the popup window that shows the built-in Speaker as "Computer" and the name of the AirTune on the AX.
    2) No firewalls between the host and the AX...as far as I know or can tell, all ports are opened within the home network.
    3) The AirPort Utility can see the AX and let's me update the configuration without any problem.
    4) OS X Firewall on my iMac is set to Allow all incoming connections
Again, I'm stucked and confused because my iMac can find the AX thru the AirPort Utility as well as from the iTunes by listing the AX's speaker in the Remote Speakers list.
Why then it cannot connect to it to play music is very big mystery...help! I really like to play music in my backyard.

  • I cannot set up either of my HP printers wirelessly using the AirPort Express.  Can't connect my iTouch either.

I have an HP1102 Laser Printer and an HP7520 All-In-One Printer.  I am unable to set up the wireless connection with either of them using a new AirPort Express.  My Internet Provider is Time Warner, and I am using the AirPort is connected to their modem.  I have internet access with my iMac, iPad, iPhone, and MacBook, but cannot access the internet with my iTouch [4th generation I think].  I get the message "unable to join the network" after I put in my password.  I successfully connected to the internet at my neighbor's house, so I know it's not the iTouch.  HELP!  I have been struggling with this for over a month.  First my old router went out.  I tried to additional routers before I went to the Apple Router and I am still having trouble.  Time Warner says it's not the modem.  Sorry this is so long ... but I am soooooo frustrated.

At this point I would recommend that you perform a complete power recycle of your networking hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • Itunes 10.6.1.7 (on windows 7 64 bit) recognizes airport express, but will not connect.

I've attempted disabling all firewalls (both PC and anti-virus), disabling ipv6, rebooting the airport unit itself, but no luck. I'm not prompted with an error, however, as itunes is attempting to connect the airplay icon turns blue, and when it doesn't connect the icon turns gray again. On a sidenote, my old macbook connects without issue. Any ideas?

Thx Hackintosh. All software was up to date as of this morning, but I think the issue stemmed from the IP switching in my building. I finanlly stripped the express/utility completely off the box and reinstalled from scratch after doing a factory reset of the airport unit itself... and finally, eureka. Of course, doing this required resetting my apple machines to the updated airport address. I will say that if anyone wants to run both apple and PC machines on the same airport, set up the PC first and then link the apple machine(s) second. Way easier than the other way around.

  • I'm trying to hook up my airport express, but everytime I connect it to my router the light is green but none of my apple produces can connect to it what am I doing wrong?

Do I have to hve the air port express connected to a computer or can it be used as a wireless router?

Yes I connected the airport to my router but when my Mac scans it does detect it neither does my iPad or iPhone but the light is green so I know it's connected and thanks for replying by the way :-)

  • ITunes no longer sees remote speakers

I went away for a day, came back, and found that iTunes could no longer see my remote speakers on my Airport Express. I've been using this setup for years without a problem, so I haven't the faintest clue as to why it decided not to work now. I searched the forums and saw that I'm not the first to have this problem, but I found no solutions. Does anyone have any ideas?
I've turned everything off and unplugged it, waited several minutes and turned it all on again (starting with the modem), and I've tried everything else I've read on these boards so far and at the Apple Support FAQ. I'm at my wit's end. It's maddening to have something that was working so well for so long just stop working for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Exact same problem here. I started a similar thread back in Sep after airtunes worked for about 13 months. It's archived now since no one had a solution.
"Airtunes missing; no Music tab in Airport Admin Utility - Help!
    Posted: Sep 2, 2006 9:01 PM
Hi. Tried to play music via airtunes to AX connected to stereo, but no speaker selections in iTunes! Been working for the past year. Went to airport admin utility (4.2) for the AEBS and when configuring it showed the Music tab for about a second then it went away. I can't select Music to setup airtunes! Where's the tab? "
Run the airport admin utility for for base station and see if the "Music" tab is still there. For some reason, when my airtunes problem started (no speaker selection in itunes) I noticed that when a I ran the airport utility the Music tab shows for a second or so until the AEBS name shows and then the tab goes away. All of the other functions of the AX works fine (green lite).
One theory is that the line out portion of the AX fails over time. Not sure, but I've reinstalled the latest SW for the AEBS, AX, itunes, etc. and I think it may be AX hardware related.
I still have Applecare with my powerbook and since I use the AX with it, it's covered. Apple is sending me a new AX so I'll try it and report back if the new AX has airtunes working again.
About the flashing yellow lite after factory reset. Like Hon. says run the utility since it's been reset to "just out of the box". When I reset mine yesterday, I couldn't find the AX in the utility running it from my PowerMac (AEBS connected via ethernet) even after multiple rescans. I went to my powerbook and found the AX as a separate network (under the airport signal arcs at the top). It had the same IP address as the AEBS. Selecting the AX network and then running the airport assistant allowed me to set it up correctly to join my current network from the AEBS. I hope that helps.

    Hello Hornet12,
Indeed, iTunes 10.2 or later will be required to utilize AirPlay.

  • I am trying to sync Go Rock TRMS03SR Bluetooth Portable 3D Surround Speakers with my Airport Express or iTunes So I can play Music in Multiple rooms. I have a WiFi network, my living room speakers are connected directly to Airport Express.

I am trying to sync Go Rock TRMS03SR Bluetooth Portable 3D Surround Speakers with my Airport Express or iTunes So I can play Music in Multiple rooms. I have a WiFi network, my living room speakers are connected directly to Airport Express, so how can I get the wireless bluetooth speakers to play at the same time in my bedroom?

Did you ever get this to work?  My guess is that the speakers are out of bluetooth range at that distance.

  • Using a PC running iTunes as remote speakers

I have two Airport Express in my house, which are great for playing music in different rooms remotely, powered by my primary PC in my office. However, I also am buying a PC for my living room to put above the fireplace. There is no room for another set of speakers for another Airport Express there, and I don't want to buy another one. What'd I'd like to do is use this new PC running iTunes as a set of remote speakers, recognized in iTunes like the Airport Express speakers. That way I could play the same music at the same time in many rooms of my house.
Does anyone know how to do this?
If not, consider this is a feature request, i hope Apple will give it consideration.

    Hello.
Any feature requests can be submitted to the following links below
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/airportexpress.html
*With Airtunes you are able to stream music to multiple speakers meaning
    1. Multiple Airport Expresses connected to Multiple speakers
    2. Multiple Expresses connected to Speakers & also hearing the audio from the computer it is broadcasting from.
Now the bigger question I believe you are asking is can other computers pickup on this broadcast of sound?
Never tried it myself. I am not aware of iTunes being able to pickup the broadcast from the speaker selection in the bottom right hand corner. I am aware of it being able to broadcast it's sound to other speakers on the network though.
Hopefully other users can post their thoughts and how they got this to work. At this current time I know you can connect multiple expresses, and have it broadcast throughout the house based on where each express it is and the speakers they are connected to.

  • ITunes loses Remote Speakers After sleep mode

Whenever I leave my PC unattended for an extended period of time iTunes can no longer find my remote speakers. The only solution is rebooting. The AE light remains green at all times but iTunes just can't connect.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 using AE and iTunes 5.0.1.4 and had this problem even with 4.7. My desktop has an intenet connection no problem so it is re-established when it is woken-up but iTunes does not. This happens whether I leave iTunes open or closed while I leave the PC unattended. Note that I'm not using AE for intenet connectivity. I'm using a d-ling hub/router and a wireless dlink PC card on my desktop. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    -Peter

I also have the very same issue. My Airport Express is working as expected, but If I put my laptop to sleep and then wake it up again, and then I try to re-connect to the Airport Express, it is not connected. I have to either restart the laptop or Airport Express device to get it working again.
