ITunes sees songs, but information about songs (ratings, etc) lost

Hello,
Everything was working fine with my iTunes. Today, I opened iTunes and noticed that, although iTunes showed the songs, it had lost all the information about my songs that took me a while to organize, such as ratings and other detailed
information...
I didn't do anything with my computer... (i.e., no iTunes upgrades
or windows upgrades (well, maybe those automatic Window updates have
taken place in between times that I opened iTunes)...
Has anyone seen this problem? How could I solve it?

iTunes doesn't want to look at the song information on nearly a hundred of my songs.
Are those tracks in WAV format? iTunes does not have the capability to read tags in WAV files.

I cant restore iphone. Itunes sees device, but I cant restore. DFU mode fails as well

I cant restore iphone so i can use as an ipod touch. Itunes sees device, but I cant restore. DFU mode fails as well. It acts like it's restoring but after verification, i still am back at square one.

When restoreing There is an n/a after capacity and serial number etc. After restore it restarts and recognizes device bu has iphone in large print in the window wher Capacity and serial number were. Any help would be appreciated.

ITunes playlists, song ratings gone in 10.4 under Lion

Im in a crysis here. My iTunes Libaray is gone under 10.4 in Lion. when i first started up it just gave me the standard iTunes window when you have no music or anything. You know it tells you where you can get it. So then i just told it to search my user folder for stuff to import and it started. but then when it gets done none of my songs had ratings that i had applied and none of my playlists where there. I checked my Music folder for playlists and didnt find any. what can i do?

Your playlists, song ratings, comments, or other information you create are stored in the iTunes Library file found in /Users/username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Library. What are the iTunes library files?, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
Tip: New versions of iTunes sometimes include enhancements to the iTunes library. When you open the new version of iTunes, iTunes upgrades your existing library to the new format and places a copy of the old library in the Previous Libraries folder. If everything goes fine during your upgrade to the latest version of iTunes, you can delete the older iTunes Library files.
Look in your /Users/username/Music/iTunes folder for a folder called previous iTunes Libraries. These files are dated with the date created.

Backing Up iTunes with Song Ratings

Is there any way to backup and restore iTunes library with song ratings?

My canned response on how to back up a library to an external hard drive. You didn't specify onto what you wanted to backup.

Assuming you use the iTunes default settings where iTunes copied added items to your iTunes folder and organizes your library (meaning - everything is all self contained in the iTunes folder), then all you have to do is drag & drop your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder you find inside the iTunes folder) to the external drive and copy the entire thing.
If you want to test that it worked or would like to actually start using it from that location instead, use these instructions when you start iTunes to point it to the new location...

If you are just testing to make sure a backup copy works and still want to use the internal location, then close iTunes after you verify it works, and restart iTunes again with the same instructions and point it back to your internal drive (original) location. Otherwise you are all set to use the library from the external location.

Switching all my iTunes data (songs, apps, etc...) to a different user...

For a number of reasons too lengthy and boring to go into here, I needed to create a new user and use that instead of my main one.... aka "new-joshua" vs. "joshua"
I found that I need to move:
~/Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
~/Music/iTunes
Anything else to move my apps over etc. and make sure it works w my iphone?

Your making a new iTunes account? And you want to associate everything you currently have with the new account?
There is only one step you need to do, you don't need to move any files or anything else. Go to the iTunes store, in the top right corner it should say your email address (that is your iTunes account). Click on your email address, it goes to a page with your account information. Then near the bottom is a button that says edit account info, click that.
Now, change your email address. This creates a new iTunes account by default under that email address, everything else will remain the same. It will take ~1 day for all of Apple's systems to reflect this change. The next time you sync your iPhone it will associate the iPhone with the new iTunes account you created. Everything else should remain the same, you just now have a new AppleID and iTunes account.

Itunes sees ipod, but doesn't see songs in ipod

Hi there!
I've updated itunes, updated and reset the ipod twice. Problem is that when I plug in the ipod, itunes will come up and it sees my ipod, but it won't show any of the content. If I drag songs from my library into my ipod icon, it will make like they're copying over, but when the ipod is disconnected i find that the songs haven't transferred.
In short: itunes opens, recognizes my ipod by name, but wont' show the content, and won't allow new content to move to the ipod.
It has worked before -- in fact, I have 10 gigs of mp3's on the ipod. I just can't get any more on (it's a new 30 gig ipod).

ITunes sees iPod but no songs

The songs that you had on your original computer are saved on that computer, and your iPod. You cannot drag songs off of an iPod and place them into a new library.

ITunes updates songs, playlists, etc., but will not update iPod options

When I plug in my iPod (4G, 40GB), everything syncs as it should --songs, playlists, podcasts, etc. The same is true when I manually choose to update the pod. (i.e. from a context menu or somewhere else in the UI) However, I am unable to change any of the options for the iPod. This includes renaming, choosing disk access, etc.
When I attempt to make these changes from the "Preferences" dialog, iTunes will say "Updating iPod," etc. but while the changes appear in iTunes, they are not actually made on the iPod itself.
A similar situation occurs when renaming the iPod. Same as before, iTunes "goes through the motions" but doesn't actually change. The difference is that after the iPod is renamed, it will no longer update until the iPod is ejected and reconnected. iTunes gives an error message saying: "The iPod '[New Name]' cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to." The name listed in the iPod's About menu is still the old name.

iPod freezing up can sometimes indicate a hard drive failure. To determine this, follow these steps:
Press menu + select until the apple logo appears.
With the apple logo still on the screen, press and hold select + rewind. You will soon see a screen that says "IRAM PASS HIT PLAY CONTINUE".
Press play/pause.
Using the forward button, navigate to "HDD SCAN" and select it.
Connect your iPod to the wall adapter.
Allow sufficient time for the scan to complete, it can take a couple of hours. Results such as a "HDD PASS" that appears in seconds or a minute or two, "SCAN NG" or "RD FAIL" indicate the iPod's hard drive is pooched and the unit will have to be replaced.
Freezing during sync can also happen if the ports are not high powered USB 2.0.

Transferring albumn artwork/song ratings etc to new itunes install

I have windows XP installed on one HD and Vista installed on another HD on the same PC. I have spent a lot of time getting the album artwork, rating the songs etc on the XP iTunes install. I recently upgraded my ram and can now use Vista w/o Lag and I want to find a way to transfer all the settings to my new iTunes install on Vista.
All the music is stored locally on a 3rd HD on my pc so I don't need help transferring my library (I saw a LOT of posts about that topic, so I'm just being clear that I don't need help with that).
Also my iPhone is synched with the iTunes/XP and I don't want it to erase everything off the phone if I synch it with the Vista/iTunes.. I have authorized the new iTunes.. just wondering if that is good enough or if there's anything else I need to do to ensure I can synch to both versions of iTunes w/o a problem.

You need to put your iPod in automatic sync mode and they will transfer automatically.
You can't do it if you are in manual update mode.

All music on external hard drive - ITunes 'sees it' but can't find it

a while back i moved all of my music to an external hard drive - i was unaware of all the steps that had to be taken to preserve the ITunes library. Now I've gotten back on ITunes and there's an "!" next to every single song i burned from all of my CDs. Can somebody, please, please tell me 'simply' how to fix this and not refer me to articles. i thought i was computer literate - but I'm just getting fed up now! thanks for your help!

You have several options:
#1 Find all the files one-by-one by clicking on them and saying yes, you want to find the file, and browsing to it.
Plus: All metadata is retained.
Minus: Takes freaking forever and requires patience that can soon wear thin.
#2 Edit the iTunesLibrary.XML file using WordPad to point to the new paths, and then use the XML file to recreate the ITL.
Plus: Is a LOT faster than option #1.
Minus: Requires careful editing and loses the Date Added metadata.
#3 Something I tried and it worked, but you could seriously hork things up even worse if you answer hteitunes questions wrong, so I hesitate to mention it - change the itunes folder back to the original place and answer NO you don't want to move the library to the new settings. THen change it back to the exHD location and say yes,but don't have copy file turned on or you'll get duplicates.
Plus: On a 160GB library, it takes about 1 hour to fix all the links
Minus: Potential to mess things up even worse
#4 Start with a blank library and drag everything back in.
Plus: All your music can be played by itunes.
Minus: Lose all metatdata.
Best of luck, whatever you go with.

Adobe "Shapes" destroyed my display. No reset, no reboot. iTunes sees phone but no display. Off to Apple store.

I attempted using the new Adobe "Shapes" app and my screen went white. I tried shutting app with home button. Screen went black. Siri worked but no display. Tried reset with both buttons - screen totally dead and iTunes reload firmware, sees phone, still no display.

ItUnes purchased songs that were lost or won't play on my computer

On my iTunes purchased list it shows some songswith an exclamation point on the left. When I click to play it states the song could not be used because the original file could not be located. My ITunes sore sho i purchased the song on this computer. How can I get the songs back?

Try re-download from your Device:
To download previously purchased music to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Open the iTunes Store on your device.
Make sure you are signed in with the same account used for the original purchase.
Tap Purchased from the bottom navigation bar.
On iPad, tap the media button in the upper-left corner.
Tap Music.
Once you've located the music you are looking for, tap the download button.
Note: To download all songs from a purchased album, tap on the Album's toggle button to switch to Album view.

Reinstalling itunes and not losing information about my music

I getting ready to reformat my hard drive and all of my music is backed up on an external hard drive. I am concerned that when i reinstall itunes on my "clean" hard drive and import all of my music, i will lose data- specifically "date added" . Is there any way to insure that I will not lose this information when i reload??

Copy the iTunes folder from where it is now and replace it/put it back where it is now after you reformat.

Itunes sees aTV but aTV does not sees iTunes

Hi, my appleTV is not seeing the itunes that is configured to sync with. When I go to iTunes, I can see the aTV and also sync files to it. I have re-booted the computer (running Windows) and no luck of aTV seeing it.
Any suggestions ? To fix it I need to configure the aTV to sync with iTunes, but then I have to reload all the content to it. It is getting annoying.

If you think this may have occured after an itunes upgrade try the following:
From the sources menu on the tv choose syncing and then select 'change itunes library', type the pass code you are given into itunes.
