ITunes Settings...

I notice when I double click a Music file or Sound FX file that I have saved elsewhere on my computer for PREVIEW only, iTunes automatically opens. I'm okay with that. What I don't understand is that it will save the files to my iTunes library automatically. What if I don't want to save it to the library...So my question is, how can i preview songs or files without having them saved to my library if I don't want them there?

1. If you preview the files in Column View in the Finder, you can listen to them via the finer. Simply click on the file once, and you'll see the Preview in the last column.
2. The reason that iTunes is called up to preview a file is because it is set as the default app for that file type. To chage this, select a file in the finder and go File -> Get Info
At the Open With... section you can choose another app istead of iTunes, try Quicktime Player instead. Click change all to apply the change to files of the same type.

  • Moving from PC to MAc, but want to keep all the old iTunes settings! Help!

I did this just fine, from PC to MacBook. But one problem I'm having is that my new iTunes library on the Mac is completely devoid of my old iTunes settings on my pc - my song ratings, my playlists, all the songs I've had checked and unchecked, date added, etc. Is there any way to migrate (I went from pc to mac, all the music files came over no problem) but to keep your iTunes information so you don't have to sort through all the songs all over again!!! Help!
    Thanks,
    Marty

    Hi Martyputz,
This happened, because iTunes on a Windows doesn't really work like iTunes for Mac. Read this [article|http://lifehacker.com/software/itunes/geek-to-live--how-to-move-an-itu nes-library-from-a-pc-to-mac-and-back-242468.php] and follow carefully the instructions...
    Hope this helps!

  • Recovering from a crash - how to get all your iTunes settings back!

Failed hard drive? Have a backup? Can't use Time Machine? Have an iPhone and a lot of music and don't want to go through setting it all up again? If you answered yes to all those questions, this is for you!
So this isn't really a question, and I'm not trying to sell anything (but I do have questions at the end for anyone who can answer). I'm posting this possible solution here because I have just confirmed it works, and I have been looking everywhere for how to do this and couldn't find the answer. I've had my second hard drive failure in the last 6 months (another Seagate), and I'm sick of having to start over again with the iTunes settings, syncing my iPhone, authorizing the store, holding my breath to see if my iPhone will be erased, etc. (Another reason I'm posting this here is because I might need to remember what I did later!)
If you were able to do a Time Machine backup you may not need this, but in my case, both Seagate drives failed before I could complete the entire backup. (In one case that left me with a large file that I could access by right-clicking and choosing Show Contents). If you don't want to restore from Time Machine but you were able to rescue your data, or if you want to have a fresh start on everything you can still pull from your Time Machine backups.
In my case I was able to recover 75% of my files (with Disk Warrior, but the drive completely failed before I could get it all) and I had already kept a backup of my Music folder, where I manually manage all of my music.
After installing my new Hitachi drive and re-installing Leopard, running the updates, etc. I was at the same versions of OSX and iTunes and everything.
I first copied all my backed up music folder, back into my Music folder where they were before. (This included the iTunes folder inside the Music folder.)
Just in case that wasn't enough, and I don't think it was last time I tried this, I found this article on how to remove all files related to iTunes:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224
I used this article to learn what else iTunes uses, and where those files and folders are located, and I was able to copy those files and folders from the restore / backup, and copy them into the new places. Because I hadn't yet run iTunes for the first time on the fresh install, most of those files and folders hadn't yet been created yet so I knew I could just delete them again if this plan didn't work.
A summary of the relevant portions of the article, but make sure to replace "drag it to the trash" with "add it back here from your backup" (and note that a "~" symbol means it's under "Users/YourName"):
    1. In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/ and click Go.
    2. Locate the iTunes folder and then drag it to the Trash.
    3. Choose Go > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Preferences/ and click Go.
    4. Locate the preference files that have names beginning with com.apple.iTunes and move them to the Trash.
    File Names should be:
    * com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist
    * com.apple.iTunes.plist
    * com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
    5. Choose Go > Go to Folder and type in /Library and click Go.
    6. Locate the iTunes folder, and then move it to the Trash.
    7. Choose Go > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ and click Go.
    8. Locate the preference files that have names beginning with com.apple.iTunes and move them to the Trash.
So I held my breath and launched iTunes on my newly installed system for the first time, and before I turned blue in the face, I notice that I did not see the "Accept License" window, and all my songs were in, ratings and selections and all! Even the podcasts began resuming downloads.
As for my iPhone, I noticed my Applications were already in too. I held my breath again and plugged it in, re-transferred my pictures right away in iPhoto, and it asked me if I wanted to back up my Applications from my iPhone, telling me if I didn't then they would be removed from my iPhone. Twist my arm, fine, I chose the option to back them up and it synced for a long time. It was an uncomfortable 20 minutes or so. (In fact, I'm writing this as it's about to finish.)
It ended up giving me a warning about how some apps were not authorized to be transferred to my computer, and gave me a list of 28 Apps (out of well over 100 on my iPhone). They weren't removed from my iPhone though! I synced again, and the same warning, so I selected Transfer, and this time no error at the end. I synced a third time, and no error messages!!!
I'm sure there are plenty of other places that might tell you the same information, but I couldn't find anything out there. Hopefully this will help someone. If anyone else has something to add or can offer any more advice on this, that would be nice too.

Both the iPhone & touch are designed to be synced with itunes on a regular basis. Neither are storage devices & not syncing is not only foolish, but as you've found out runs the risk of complete data loss. Purchased apps can be re-downloaded for free, as long as you use the same account that was used to originally purchase them. You can view your itunes purchase history under Store>View My Account>Purchase History. Music is a one time download. Its your responsibility to backup this content. You can try contacting itunes support regarding the lost music, plead your case & hope for the best. Whether they add the lost music to her download queue is strictly up to them:

My original computer that has my itunes account on it no longer works.  I am trying to import my phones itunes settings into my new computer and it is not letting me and I don't want to loose all my photos and music, what do I do?

It does not magically appear in a new place.  It will only be where you put it.
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

How do i change my itunes settings from Australian to NZ ?

If you are getting an 'account not in this country' message then try going to the bottom of the Featured tab in the App Store app on your iPhone and tap on your account id, tap on 'View Apple ID' on the popup and log into your account, and then select the Country/Region section and select New Zealand.
If you have moved to New Zealand and want to update your details then you might be able to update your billing address by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store on your phone and logging into it, or you can do it via the Store > View Account menu option on your computer's iTunes. If you have a credit card on your account then it will need to have been issued by a New Zealand bank and be registered to your address there.

How do I change my iTunes settings to lower the resolution of movies I download to reduce the download time?

If you're buying HD movies, you can change the setting in the Store preferences in iTunes to prefer 720p. Or you can just buy SD versions.

  • Path in itune \settings\extended correct but titles not found ( ! symbol )

    Hi to everybody
I made probably a mistake somewhere trying to find a place for my 10 GB "iTunes Music" directory.
To make it short the situation is as follows:
Finally I moved back the "itunes music" dir to its original place in \ownfiles\ownmusic and indicated its place in \itune \settings\extended.
The path of "iTunes Music" is displayed in settings correctly but titles are not found: I got 3000 times "!".
If i click upon a title i am asked to indicate manually again its directory. then it works, but i would hate do have to do it 3000 times....HELP
    acer Windows 2000

The ! means that the songs have been moved out of the iTunes music folder or even deleted altogether.
Use Explorer to search for them.
On the Start menu, click Search.
    Click All Files and folders.
In the "All or part of the file name" field, type a song or album title and then click Search.
If you see the files you are looking for in the Search Results window, you can add them back into your iTunes library.

  • Reset iTunes Settings?

    Hi All,
I'm not quite sure what I did, but yesterday I downloaded and tried to save a ringtone in iTunes on my Windows laptop, that i was going to end up syncing to my iPhone. (never quite got there!)
While downloading i think i changed a setting somehow, and now when i open iTunes on my laptop, its called Ringtones ?!
Also, any music i haven't purchased using my phone has all vanished from the main iTunes library, but is still in my iPhone music library.
I want to somehow undo what i did yesterday, or reset iTunes settings?
    How can i do this?
I tried uninstalling iTunes then downloading and installing it again, but it just opened up exactly the same as before.

    Use the iTunes menus:
    Store > Sign Out
    Store > Sign In...

  • Re-install (fresh) Yosemite but keep emails and iTunes settings etc

OK so I upgraded to Yosemite. Prior to this my mac was getting slow as I have always just upgrade over the old OS. But things are still slow. So it's time to do a fresh install.
I know how to do this but I want to maintain my iTunes settings and my emails and accounts even apps. But I have the following questions:
    1) If i do a fresh install then use migration assistant from my Time Machine backup to bring in the old apps and settings etc. Is this still better than just upgrading as I have done ?
    2) What method allows me to keep at least keep my iTunes settings e.g. playlists and content, emails and documents etc ? I can always re-install my apps if needed.
    3) Will a fresh install have any affect on my Boot Camp install ?
My iTunes is split over 2 drives i.e. I have use TuneSpan to move my video files onto an external drive.
    Thanks
    Mark

It is exactly the same. What you can try is to restore only your user files but not apps, so you will not restore most of the rubbish you had before.
    See the answer 1.
No, it should not, always that you do not format the Boot Camp partition by mistake, so be very careful.
In this case, the best way is to copy your user files to an external drive manually, so after formatting the hard disk and reinstalling Mac OS X you do not have to restore anything from the Time Machine backup and you only have to copy back the files, but this will not keep your mails.

  • ITunes Settings for Media on External Drive via Airport Extreme...

iTunes Settings for Media on External Drive via Airport Extreme base station versus plugging directly into laptop.
My current configuration is that my iTunes Media (700gb) are all stored in an External Drive that's plugged into my Airport Extreme Base Station. This works great for me having wireless access to my iTunes external drive.
Whenever I need to back up that hard drive with Time Machine, I just plug it directly to my laptop...
But how do I let iTunes (or iTunes library) know that this is the same hard drive where all my media is stored when it's plugged directly into the laptop as opposed to trying to access it from my Airport Extreme network?

No there isnt any files call library in the folder i created I am now in the process of copying them back but I guess I will loose all my playlists and playcounts. I do have a Copy of my drive that i made with carbon copy cloner. So maybe it will be best to boot from there, restore and start again.
Chris it was just the media folder. I was following the instructions on the apple support page. Got to point 14 didn't get the warning but did seen to have a brand new itunes, so emptied the trash as they said expecting everything to be fine but it wasnt.

  • How to transfer itunes settings from iMac to PC?

    Hi,
A couple of a years ago I moved from PC to an iMac and it wasn't a problem to transfer the settings. I don't remember how I did it, but it was fairly easy.
I want to keep my contacts, notes, text messages and photos from my iPhone.

I already managed to transfer my music and my app purchases following these instructions:

  • Upgrade WinXp- WinVista: itunes settings

    Hi,
I want to pass from Xp to Vista, but I want to be sure to not lost nothing of my itunes' settings, like counters, playlist, date of last play and all about my library.
    What have I to save?
    Bye

You need to save the iTunes Library.itl file.
Article on that - but take note, it needs to be updated for Vista:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
Also you need to first make sure that the actual music files are stored in the same path. If you are using the iTunes defaults, this will be a problem! The library pats won't work and everything will have a ! next to it.
User settings are different between XP & Vista
    XP iTunes default path is
    C:\Documents and Settings\ username \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
Vista iTunes default path is different - I believe it is
    C:\Users\ username \Music\iTunes\iTunes Music

  • ITunes settings reset with every new version, and I get: "...the information on the iphone is synced with another user account"

Windows 7 64-bit with MS Outlook 2010. I've seen this now probably 10 times. When I first installed iTunes, I selected:
Preferences -> Devices -> "Prevent iPhonse, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically".
and on my iPhone, I selected:
Info -> Sync Contacts with: Outlook.
Info -> Sync Calendars with: Outlook
Info -> Other -> Sync notes with: Outlook
This works great, and the settings stick.  As soon as apple releases any new version (even minor) of iTunes and I install, I immediately receive: "...the information on the iphone is synced with another user account", and have to merge my calendar and contacts, but then once I get into iTunes, I find that ALL of the above settings (prevent syncing, sync calendar, contacts, notes) get reset and are turned off! I am running as a user account with Admin privaleges, but I don't right-click -> "Run as administrator" when I perform the iTunes update.
To reiterate, once I change the settings back, things work normally until the next iTunes update at which it gives me that sync error, and resets my sync options.
    Any idea? Thanks!
    -Brian

Is someone else using the PC and iTunes?
Create another user for the PC with your name, and try syncing that way.
This way it wont conflic with the other user.

  • I want to connect my ipad mini to my Apple TV. There isn't a option when I double tap on my ipad button for connecting to the tv and I also can't connect to home sharing from my iTunes settings. Can someone talk to me in simple terms. Thanks

So I have a ipad min. I want to connect it to my Apple TV. There is no option on my ipad for home sharing which my Apple TV is telling me to do.
Can somebody please just explain it to me in simple terms where I can find the home sharing and what I have to do to connect my Apple TV to the ipad or vice versa.
Everything I have bought from apple in the past month has been a complete let down its taking far to long to connect things and the people who sell the products to you lie about what the product does and can do.
    Can someone help me please
    Thanks

AirPlay isn't anything to do with homesharing. (Home sharing lets you share the iTunes libraries on computers)
Basic AirPlay: Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
Mirroring: When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2 (or better), iPad Mini, iPhone 4S (or better), double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Check AirPlay is turned on on the Apple TV (turn it off and on if it already is)
Check that both devices are on the same network (Settings > Wifi, on the mobile device and Settings > General > Network, on the Apple TV).
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router.
    Restart your mobile device.

  • IPhone Mail, Contacts, Calendars iCloud and Macbook iTunes settings what a mess!

So I have been having some trouble with my iCloud settings and my iPhone lately and tried some changes and have discovered many more issues that make no sense to me.  I have an iPhone and a Macbook Pro.  Before I set the settings for each device separately so if I made changes to my email passwords I would have to manually update this info on both devices.  Later I noticed on iTunes there was an option to sync the settings, so I selected this option and completed the sync.  I have found that this does not work at all.  When I make a change to either device it does not update on the other.  For some reason the iPhone keeps losing passwords for random accounts for no reason, the info is on the desktop and works fine on mac mail and even when entered on the phone it will ask for it again a week later.
So I decided to wipe all mail accounts from the iPhone and start fresh and transfer the settings from the Macbook to the phone.  Well this created a new problem.  I have two Apple ID's. When I go to turn on all of the on/off settings for this account through mail, contacts and calendars settings, the switch will work but they will not show the blue on icon...no problem at least the information is on the phone.  On my second Apple ID I experience the same problem but now the option to sync reminders has disappeared.  I performed another sync and still the iPhone is missing passwords for random email accounts, ones that worked before do not work now and ones that did not work work, constantly changing.
In an attempt to see if some other settings needed to be changed I opened the iCloud settings on the iPhone and found that nothing existed, which is strange because under Mail, Contacts and Calendars that account is listed.  Now when I input my primary iCloud info into the iCloud settings on the iPhone it asks me to deactivate the settings from the came iCloud account listed under Mail Contacts and Calendars????  They are the same account and should be sharing the same settings!  So now when I go into Mail Contacts and Calendars this Apple id is listed twice and naturally neither of the settings transfer to the Macbook!
All I wanted to do was to make changes to a password for an email account on one device and have that information updated on the other...sync as they say.  Now I have found out that the iCloud accounts listed under Mail Contacts and Calendars are not associated with one another...it's all a mess to me!
I am reverting back to manually entering account information for emails and iCloud accounts on both devices because the sync option seems to be faulty to me!
Oh yes I am using a Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and an iPhone 4S 64GB with iOS 6.0.1

Sorry, How to create Apple ID with @iclound.com.

  • Played Podcasts are not removed from iPhone despite iTunes settings?

    Hi,
In iTunes I have set my general Podcast settings to only sync unplayed podcasts to my iPhone. However, when synced, the played podcasts remain on my iPhone. Can anyone help?
    Many thanks

I have exactly this problem. Alongside the podcasts I subscribe to via iTunes, I download some random ones from time to time via the iPhone itself. Now I simply can't rid myself of the files - they show on the iPhone screen but not when connected to iTunes and they are restored to my library every time I reconnect to the Mac. There seems to be no way of deleting the things - I even tried de-synching all podcasts and re-synching again but this didn't work either.
This only seems to have happened since I upgraded to iOS 5. Mine is a 3gs by the way.
    Any answers anyone?
