ITunes shared from OSX 10.6 to Windows 7 on Bootcamp?

Today I used bootcamp to setup Windows 7 Ultimate on my MBP 13 in' from May 2010.  It worked perfectly, installed all the drivers (even installed the patch for bootcamp for 3.1 to fix the headphones problem).  I only have one question; how do I share my iTunes library from my Mac partition with my blank iTunes on my windows 7 partition?  cheers!

If you’re thinking sharing the same library, meaning the playlists, album art, ratings, podcasts, apps etc.
it isn’t possible. This is because the iTunes Library file (that tells iTunes where everything is), is written in a Mac format, which the Windows iTunes cannot read, and vice versa.
However, I thought of a solution, but haven’t tried it. Seems logical to me:
1. Install iTunes on your PC
2. Go to the “Edit” menu, and click “Preferences"
3. Go to the “Advanced” tab, and UNCHECK “Keep iTunes Media folder organized”, and “Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. Click OK
4. Get your iTunes media (from the Mac Partition), into the Windows iTunes. I’m not sure how exactly, but I suppose you can go to the (Mac) Username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music folder, and drag all the folders into Windows iTunes
5. Enjoy your music, knowing that ratings/album art changes/podcasts/etc. will not carry over to Mac iTunes.
What I just wrote does is:
Lets Windows iTunes play your Mac iTunes files. However, Step 3 prevents Windows iTunes from duplicating your iTunes music into Windows, which would mean you have the same song on Mac and Windows. Meaning that Windows iTunes can read, but not change your media files
What it WON’T do:
You shouldn’t sync your iPod on Windows as it would create a huge booboo (just disable syncing on Windows)
Maintain ratings of your Music - all your music will not have the “Mac” ratings, and rating it in Windows doesn’t change a thing on your Mac
Subscribing to Podcasts, buying apps, getting new music (from or not from iTunes store) will only download it to Windows, and not Mac.
You will have to re-authorize purchased content, as it is like a new computer
So use Windows iTunes ONLY to play files, while Mac iTunes to CHANGE your files (rate, buy subscribe, delete, etc)
This made total sense in my head but I think I complicated it out typing it. Write back if it doesn’t work (logically it should)

i just got a new pc running windows 7 and cannot get my i tunes library from my old windows xp i have an ipad, ipod nano .ipod touch ,will any of these do it? My library is one i downloaded from cds not purchased thanks'

Iv just got a macbook pro today, and I don't know how to transfer my itunes library from my imac..
the simplest way, assuming all your media files are in the default location, would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the source to <MacintoshHD>/users/yourname/music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
My sister is having my old imac, so I also need to then clear the itunes on the imac for her.
just a create a new admin user account for her on the iMac.

    So yeah...
    I'm totally stumped now.
I feel like I've tried every method imaginable, but still no luck.
Printing from OSX 10.6.8 works just FINE.
On the server side, I'm running Windows Server 2008... there's only a local admin and a local user account.
Clients running OSX Lion 10.7.2 -- All updated.
Printer is an HP LaserJet P4010-4510 series.
Workstation is an iMac 21.5-inch, Late 2009
3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Please help!!!
    --- Richard

LPD print service is not enabled by default in Server 2008. It can be enabled via the Print Serveer role, but I am remote and cannot confirm the exact setting.
    As for SMB, the error log is showing;
    Failed to connect to "smb://<username>:<password>@utlab-prsrv-02/"
So it would suggest that there is still an issue with the account detail you are using as you show you have tried this syntax at one stage. If you want to continue to create the queue using SMB rather than LPD then I recommend using the CUPS web page (http://127.0.01:631) to create the queue. This will allow you to enter the syntax exactly as the error message shows. From previous testing I found it was okay to just use the account name rather than domain/account name on a domain bound server.

  • Moving iTunes library from an iMac to a Windows Laptop running Windows 7

    Hi All
My daughter has a problem. She is selling her iMac and has to move her music library of 3,000 tunes from her iMac to her Windows 7 laptop. She does not have either her iPhone or iPod any more. How does she do this.
    Please help.
    Regards
    Lee

+When I moved my iTune files to my Windows 7 laptop, it worked first time.+
Well, if it worked the first time, your library must have been nicely consolidated into the itunes media folder.
The file structure between Mac and WIndows is completely different. iTunes can't make sense of the Mac file paths in the itl database. However, it should revert to looking for everything in the itunes media folder location, if your daughter's PC has that itunes preference turned on.
If it's already enabled, turn it off, save the changes, and then turn it back on.
If all the items are in that itunes media folder, there shoudl be an "Organizing files" message while it looks for them again. If they are not in the media folder, it won't find them.

  • ITunes Library from Time Machine Backup to Windows 7?!

    Hi everyone,
Yeah, I'm switching over to a PC...
Does anyone know how to put an iTunes library from a Time Machine backup to a PC (running Windows 7?)
    Thanks!

When I tried to relaunch itunes holding down the option button and select my backed-up itunes folder from time machine
Is this after you restored the iTunes folder from Time Machine? Or were you trying to select the iTunes folder on the Tme Machine drive to use as the iTunes library?
    Quit iTunes.
    Open Time Machine.
    Selct \Music\iTunes\ in Time Machine.
Go back to when you want it restored from.
    Click on Restore.
    When it asks, select Replace.
After it is finsihed copying, launch iTunes.

  • Printing from OSX 10.2 to Windows HP Printer

I'm trying to set up my mac to print to my pc. I have the printer on the pc shared and I can print to it from my other pc. On my mac I have gone to the print center, option clicked add, gone to advanced, picked windows printer via samba, given the device a name (printer) and then in the device url I have put smb://192.168.1.2/printer (the name of the printer share on the windows machine). I had to leave the printer type as generic because it will not show the driver for the printer, even though I installed it.
When I try to print to this printer I get the same error, "Unable to connect to Samba host, will retry in 60 sec"
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    David

Have a look here and see if this might help you. The printer being shared is an HP, but I don't know if it's your model (you didn't mention the model name). The model shouldn't matter however.
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3003.html
If Gimp-Print does not have your driver, you might try Gutenprint which should, being as Gimp-Print/Gutenprint are almost one and the same. There should be a link on the Gimp-Print site, but if not, just do a Google search and you'll find it.
    Hope that helps.

  • OSX dissapears after booting Windows in Bootcamp

    Hi community,
I have a very odd problem that has been puzzling me for week and maybe there a guru out there that can give me a hand
    Here is the situation:
I have an iMac (mid 2011) i5 with 12 Gb RAM with 2 hard disk: 1TB HD on SATA port 1 and 128Gb SSD on port 2.
I've been running Mavericks with no issues until I decided to install Windows 7 - Ultimate 64 bits using Bootcamp on a 500Gb partition of the 1 Tb drive.
Everything worked fine and I was able to use Windows for a while, but when I booted the iMac my OSX was gone (not even pressing Alt). I mean the whole partition for OSX was gone forcing me to restore from my TimeMachine backup to be able to use OSX again.
So I thought that something went wrong in the installation and I did it again erasing the windows partition and reinstalling. Same result: OSX disappeared once a vanilla Windows boots. Ok, so I thought, there's something wrong with my OSX installation. In order to fix it, I booted the computer into UBUNTU to use gparted and delete ALL partitions including the EFI and hidden partitions (this was the only way I found to be able to do it). Then, using an USB stick, I installed a fresh installation of OSX into the SSD and did not restore from TimeMachine. I started bootcamp and installed Windows on the HD (whole drive)... and you guessed ... same result. I have no clue of what can be happening, but I'm not able to use this iMac with Windows and OSX. Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jacobo

I have no clue either (I virtualize Windows and other OS's so have no experience with Boot Camp), but since Boot Camp appears to be the culprit, I'd suggest posting your question in the Boot Camp Community forum too, since there's a better chance that someone there has also been bitten by that bug.

  • Share iTunes Library between OSX and Win7 Bootcamp

I've done quite a bit of research on this but I still haven't found a solution that does what I require.
Basically my setup is a SSD & HDD in my MBP. I have OSX and Win7 (Bootcamp) on the SSD and the NTFS HDD is a shared file storage drive for both Windows and OS. I have my iTunes library located on this drive and I want to be able to share the library between the OSs. I also want changes e.g. additions deletions made in windows to be reflected in OSX and vice versa.
Technically this is possible and does in fact work if I point iTunes to the .itl file but the problem is that when I open iTunes after switching OSs it must go through a very lengthy library update which can take 30-60mins in some cases before I can use it. Obviously this is not a good solution so I'm wondering if there are any workarounds to accomplishing this?
For example can I duplicate the .itl file and have one for win and one for OSX and still have the libraries stay in sync?

Just for your info, Vista ***** whatever you try to do. I'm stuck with Vista on a pre-installed laptop. All experience I have from Vista is bad, don't buy Vista or a computer with preinstalled Vista if you can avoid it.
We have three computers in a home network, one Macbook Pro, one PC with Windows XP, and the Vista laptop. All are using iTunes-8, downloaded and installed last week.
Sharing iTunes libraries using the option to share libraries on a local network works fine between Mac and Windows-XP. The sharing also works fine between the XP and the Vista PC.
But the Vista PC can't access the Mac iTunes library. When trying to open the Mac library, iTunes on the Vista computer says something like "Fetching library info from...". It's the same problem when trying to access the Vista library from the Mac.
We had a similar problem when trying to access shared folders on the local network. Thanks to a tip on this forum how to tweak the Vista registry, the shared folder problem was solved.
I'm think some registry setting in Vista might solve iTunes shared library problems. Maybe some Windows freak knows how to patch the registry to solve this issue.
Otherwise the solution is to trash Vista, and install Windows-XP.

  • ITunes Sharing with Vista, Handbrake movies

I have two machines, a 10.5.7 Leopard, a fully updated Vista, and fully updated iTunes on each.
I am sharing music and videos via iTunes sharing from the Mac to the PC. The music works, the video does not, except for one. That single video was exported from Final Cut Pro as I recall, the rest were ripped with Handbrake. I suspect an issue with atoms. I don't want to copy any media to the Vista PC, I want sharing to work flawlessly.
    Can anyone help?

Well, I think that's ridiculous, especially since I have a legitimate use for this app. I have unencrypted student films that I made with other film students and have every legal right to possess as per the agreement the University of North Texas has with its students. Each member of my class was given a DVD, I watch everything on my Apple TV and computers, so what did I do, I ripped each of these 10 minutes shorts with Handbrake, because I love the H.264 codec. We shot our five films on 16mm and it is glorious on my Apple TV.
Commercials I was paid to make and had the original files to in Final Cut Pro were exported with Compressor, Apple TV preset. These play in Vista just fine.
Apple clearly thinks we have the right to use OUR OWN FILMS with iTunes, iMovie and Final Cut Pro both have export options for iTunes/iPhone/ATV.
So again, I implore the help of the forum. Can anyone help me get this junky Vista machine to play my films?

  • File and iTunes sharing doesn't work

    Hello,
I have am trying to share files and an iTunes library from my Macbook Pro (Early 2008 model.)  Since upgrading to Mac OS X Mountain Lion, sharing of all kinds has been acting strange.  In other words, file and iTunes sharing from my computer can't be seen by other computers, but the reverse is not true.
-- 1. iPhone remote app can't see my library:
While I can pair my iPhone with my iTunes library (iTunes 11) in the remote application, the Remote app simply says "Looking for..." without no name given for the library (on the remote app, the library shows up as a deactivated itunes logo with no name,) and then "Couldn't find ..."  i.e., it fails to find the library.
-- 2. iTunes library can't be seen on other macs:
I activated home sharing on my mac and another mac (Macbook Air 2011 with Mountain Lion and iTunes 11), I also set my iTunes preferences to "Share music over local network."     While I can see the Air's library on the MBP, I can't see the MBP's library on the Air.
-- 3. Shared folders can't be seen on other macs:
I can see shared folders from the Air on my MBP.  But to connect to shared folders on the MBP from the Air, I must enter the exact address, since browsing for my MBP on the network shows nothing.
I have confirmed that TCP port 3689 is open on the MBP.   Firewall is off.  The local network in question is my cable modem connection (no router) which I am sharing from my MBP by WiFi .  I am running OS X 10.8.2, iTunes 11.0.1.
I would appreciate any help anyone could give.
    Thanks

And you are quite persistent, Menu Boy, in offering pernickety and pointless prattle, in response to a "support page" on iPad's buggy Pages App.
Let's summarise, for those reviewing this threadless thread for app support..
Mobile pages works reliably for simple docs, especially creating letters and Menus for Microsoft's Kindy canteen (even on special days with nice big pictures).
When importing more complex docs and/or working with larger creations, it is prone to randomly corrupting files upon re-opening, along similar lines as Word (running on a PC).
So, Menu Boy, do they let you sneak into classes every now and then? What is the secret to their training? "Say after me, if any I.T. product works just some of the time, that's a job well done, and if something randomly stops working, we call that the user's fault... And if they complain, we call them names."

  • ITunes Sharing Libraries Issue

I have been having a serious issue sharing my main computers iTunes library over my network and have exhausted my limited networking/computer knowledge trying to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    *My Setup:*
My music is stored on an EHDD that is connected to a PC Desktop. I have 2 laptops and an iPhone (use as remote) that I want to share the library with. The laptops are an HP and a Macbook.
    *The Issue:*
I have set all iTunes on all computers up to share libraries. I have named them all the computers (work laptop, macbook, desktop). All libraries show up on all other computers shared drives in iTunes. However, the sharing works bidirectionally between the HP laptop and Macbook, but nothing works bidirectionally with the Desktop. The Desktop PC can read the music on the laptops and play the songs, but the laptops can not connect to the Desktop PC.
Secondly, this bodes true for my iPhone's remote app. It is recognized by all computers, but only works with the laptops.
I get an error message when trying to connect any device/laptop to the PC Desktop. It seems like something is blocking the intrusion.
    *My Troubleshooting:*
I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes once.
I have reinstalled Bonjour only as well.
I have forward the port 3689 (or whichever it is) on my router.
    I have disabled my firewalls.
I have even connected the Desktop PC wirelessly to the network to make sure that the router isn't the issue and it didn't work.
To no avail, I still can't connect to the Desktop PC iTunes library where all of my music is stored. It's driving me insane!! Please help me if you can.

When I set up my home network for sharing, for some reason even though I had Windows sharing and Mac sharing all comfigured correctly, I couldn't get iTunes sharing to work everywhere until I disabled the Windows firewall on my Xp desktop and XP laptop.
Then once itunes sharing was OK, I re-enabled Windows firewall on both XP machines, and itunes sharing still worked.

To downgrade, you'll need to download the previous software version here: ATV3 http://appldnld.apple.com/AppleTV/041-4361.20120605.grjot/AppleTV3,1_5.0.2_9B830 _Restore.ipsw
    ATV2: http://appldnld.apple.com/AppleTV/041-4362.20120605.t8i4U/AppleTV2,1_5.0.2_9B830 _Restore.ipsw
Next, plug the Apple TV into your computer with a micro-usb cable (most phones today use these) and start up Itunes. It should detect the Apple TV in recovery.
After that, hold down Option on Apple or Alt on Windows and click Restore. This should open a window that allows you to select the software update you want to apply. Select the one you downloaded earlier.
It will then go through the restore process, which takes only a few minutes, and then you will be able to plug the Apple TV back in to your display and set it up again.
I recently ran into a similar issue with a bunch of these things and after restoring them all to the previous software version they are working again.
