ITunes Sharing: 2 user accounts, 1 mac

I've turned on Fast Switching, I've enabled sharing in the Preferences...and I still can't get the sharing to work.
It seems to me that it's been broken since I upgraded to Tiger. Does anyone have any pointers.
I'm not trying to share 1 library amongst 2 users, I'm just trying to allow 2 user accounts on one machine to see (and listen to) each others' libraries.
Thanks

Ray:
While the article was written for iTunes 4.5, it does not imply that you can simply activate FUS to share music. It is very clear that unless your music files are in a public folder, the are not going to be accessible by other users on the computer.
To quote from the article:
To share your music with other accounts on the computer:
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Locate your iTunes Music Folder. It is stored by default:
~/Music/iTunes or ~/Documents/iTunes/.
b These folders cannot be accessed by other accounts on the computer. In order for other users to be able to access your music, you must move it to a publicly accessible location.
The Public folder in your home directory (~/Public), or to another folder outside your home directory
b that other users have access to,
such as /Users/Shared. Tip: The tilde "~" refers to your home folder. For more information see Mac OS X: Using Your Home Directory.
3. Drag the iTunes Music Folder to a publicly accessible location. Important: Do not move the iTunes folder, the iTunes 4 Music Library file or the iTunes Library.xml file.
4. Open iTunes.
5. From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
6. Click Advanced.
7. Click the Change button.
8. Navigate in the Change Music Folder Location dialog to the location of your iTunes Music folder.
9. Click Choose.
Repeat these steps for each account that is sharing music with other users.

  • ITunes sharing between accounts on same Mac

    Hello,
Is there a way to share iTunes content (music, movies, etc.) between different user accounts on the same Mac? We have a "family" iMac with different login accounts (me, my spouse and our kids). When my spouse or kids are logged on as themselves, is there a way for them to access the music on iTunes that I see when I'm logged in? Thank you in advance!
    Best,

    Hello M,
The article linked below details how to go about setting up a single iTunes Library for sharing across all user accounts on your system.

  • Sharing Itunes between user accounts

    Hi all,
I just came back to the mac and set up user accounts for myself and my wife. She tends to do most of the photo editing and I do most of the music stuff on itunes. I heard that I can set it up so that she is actually using my itunes or library even though she is on her login in. And we could do the same with the iphoto in reverse so that if I download photos it goes into the iphoto on her login. We would like to avoid having some music and pictures separated by the different logins. So my question is, is this the best way to set things up in our situation and how do I actually do it? Are there any hiccups when I sync with my iphone and she syncs with her itouch? Thanks for you help.

I've been trying to do this same thing. My wife and I share one computer and she has her own login account to check email etc. I moved all the music, movies, videos to the shared folder. We can now "share" that music without having two iTunes media libraries. However, I want to remedy the situation of adding music from different accounts, adding and deleting playlists. How do I have that type of library data automatically get updated from account to account? I've asked this question in it's own thread about a week ago and it got buried with no responses or solutions.

  • Sharing iTunes between user accounts no longer works in iTunes 10.4

I recently upgraded to iTunes 10.4 (80). Still running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I have two user accounts on my MacBook Pro and my iTunes Media folder is shared i.e. /Users/Shared/ITunes/iTunes Media
This has always worked with no problems but since upgrading to iTunes 10.4 I can no longer see my iTunes content from both accounts.
First time I opened it after the upgrade it just presented me with an empty library. I eventually managed to see my iTunes content by deleting the iTunes library and xml files and relaunching iTunes. However when I quit and switch to the other user account I can't open iTunes - it keeps telling me that the library is locked or I don't have access to the files.
I have to keep manually resetting permissions on the iTunes folder & subfolders in order to be able to launch it but even when I manage to open it from the second user account I just see an empty library again.
I always used to be able to just quit iTunes in one user account and then launch it from the other; no permissions changes required. Now it just doesn't work.
Please can someone offer advice or is this a known issue with the 10.4 release?
    Many thanks in advance.

  • Itunes preferences for shared user accounts

I moved iTunes into folder Users/Shared.  I have the iMac setup with an Administrator user account + six Managed user acounts.  iTunes in the administrator account works.  How can I get iTunes in the six managed accounts to work.  I am a new user and will need clear instructions.  Thanks.

Try reposting in the iTunes forum if no one here can give you a hand.

  • ITunes - 2 user accounts - How do I combine to get one set of Playlists ...

I am very new to Mac. I have 2 user accounts set-up (really would rather have only one), and the iTunes is different under each account. I would like to only have one set of iTunes Music library and Playlists. Can anyone help me out?

No, you need firewire (if your Mac has a FW port) - see some info here under setup:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html
To go back to the startup menu, you can use recovery - see info here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
You'd basically start with key commands Command + Option + R, choose Disk Utility to erase the drive and then Apple's servers will reinstall the OS. Once that is done, the setup will begin and Setup Asst will be offered in the beginning (it's only offered once - you decline and you have to use Migration Asst or start over).

  • Moving iTunes between User Accounts on home Computer

Hi all - I'd appreciate some advice please. When my son set up iTunes on our home XP computer he did so in his own user account. This cannot be accessed by my daughter in her user account or in the general family account. How do I move the base set up between user profiles on the same computer?
    Regards
    Phil

My advice is to consolidate your son's library to a shared folder.
Then everyone can access the music from their accounts, yet keep separate ratings & playcounts, etc.
If you just move things around in windows, your son will either lose ratings & playcounts, or the paths to the music. Here is how to consolidate:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
    Here is some light reading
    Multiple users, use Method 1:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
Sharing files on same PC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
This is important so you don't get duplicates files and fill up your hard drive.

  • Making and sharing user accounts

Okay-I have spent five hours trying to find a solution in Manuals, Support and similar questions but didn't find anything similar. Maybe I was searching in the wrong places but now I need direct help.
    This is my question :
I need to duplicate my admin account to a new user account( admin) that will let me access the entire volume and all the data within.
    I have tried -
    1. I have turned on File sharing from System Preferences, shared the new user account (Also everyone), added files/folders to share the entire original user folder...gave all users Read and Write permission...just about everything...
    2. I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions ( the report said some permissions can't be repaired)
    3. I have done everything the manuals here have asked me to do...
    4. Went to each folder->Get Info->checked Shared Folder. Even after that folders in the new account it says- I have no access( remember I am an admin the new account too)
    Could anyone help me please?

Hello James, Sorry about the late reply, I was otherwise occupied. Here is what I did >
    1. Make another user account, whom you want to give privileges.
    2. Open Finder (after logging in to your own username) and in the left-hand panel, below the DEVICES section, select your hard-disk. Choose your username under "users". Right-click or use the menu bar to choose the option "Get Info".
    3. In the "Get Info" box, scroll down and check the box beside "Shared Folder" but this is not enough!
    4. Scroll further down to the area "Sharing and Permissions" and click on the "lock" image on the right corner below the list and supply your admin password to unlock it.
    5. Now use the " + " symbol on the left corner below the list to add the users you want. Whether you want to give Read/Write/Both privileges can be chosen by the up-down arrow beside each user's name in the list.
    6. DO NOT forget to click on the "wheel" image in the center below the list to check "Apply to enclosed items" which will include all the sub-folders, etc . Otherwise the other user gets access that is limited to the root shared folder only!
    7. Now log in to the other user's account and verify in Finder if you can access your (admin user) files from this user account. I think this should work.
    8. If you do not want to share your entire user account, you can perform the above steps to specific folders or even just files.
    9. Its slightly more complicated if you want to share music or photos as you will have to "Add to Library" all the respective music/photo folders that can now be accessed from the new user's account too.
I hope I did not confuse you further, do let me know if anything is not clear
    -cheers-

  • Updating iTunes - 2 User accounts

I have 2 user accounts on my PC. My son and I have iPods and both are set up to manually update. For the most part we share one library located in my user account. However, he has recently installed some songs in what was an empty iTunes library in his XP account.
I have previously backed up my library to a removable HD but I am thinking that my son's songs won't be in "My Docs/My Music" folder in my account so I guess I should separately back up his library. Is this as obvious as signing on to his account and looking for the equivalent "My Music" folder and copying this folder to the removable drive (but giving it a different name)?
I presume then reinstalling the songs in each library post iTunes upgrade will be the opposite process? I want to avoid mixing his music in with mine.

You can put all hte atcual music files in one folder on the PC. Then log onto each XP account and update your iTunes libraries from that folder.

  • Itunes Shared Library between Mac and Windows isn't sharing videos properly

Hi, I'm a bit new to the mac world, but I'm the proud owner of a new macmini. I also own a Windows 7 machine.
My problem is with the Itunes Shared library. Itunes 10 on my mac is set up to share everything, including podcasts. I can see these from Itunes 10 on Windows, and I can play music (and audio podcasts), but video is hit or miss.
Videos downloaded from Itunes U tend to work, lectures and stuff.
Video podcasts (also downloaded from Itunes Store) and other videos don't work at all. Itunes just doesn't play the video, and doesn't even launch the "black screen". The timer remains at 0.00.
On the other hand, sharing videos from the PC to Mac works well, i.e. my mac can see the contents of the itunes shared library on Windows and play videos. It just doesn't work the other way around.
Thanks for reading and I hope this problem can be fixed.

  • ITunes sharing PC to Mac

The Mac shows up on the PC's iTunes sharing section, whereas the PC will not show up on the Mac's iTunes sharing section. I believe I have all the correct settings turned on and such, but I may have missed something (anything in system prefs? or anything on the windows side of things outside of iTunes?)
Using iTunes 9 (Which I love, by the way, but this problem was in iTunes 8 as well)

    Anyone?

  • How do I restrict Adobe CC to just my user account (Mac)?

Can anyone help with this please ...
I'm running Adobe CC on a 2010 iMac (OS X Yosemite).  I'm delighted with it, however ...
Several family members share the same iMac using separate user accounts.  Adobe CC seems to run for all of them which is annoying for them as they get messages about updates etc, plus it takes up unnecessary system resources (particularly as we tend to use 'switch user' and Activity Monitor shows an instance of Adobe CC running for each user).
How can I restrict Adobe CC to run just for my user account please?
    Thanks in anticipation
    Richard.

As far as I know, when you sign OUT of your Cloud account nobody will be able to use that account again until the user signs back IN
Of course... any user who does not sign out and then turns the computer off will be (I think) the "user of record" when the computer is started again

  • Transferring iTunes between user accounts

I have just moved my iTunes library from my PC to my MacBook pro via Migration Assistant, however, I did this after my initial set up. So it has created a new user profile, profile B, which my iTunes library is now in. Question: how do I now move/merge/transfer my library that is in profile B (ex-PC data) to my (initially setup) profile A?  I have looked through FAQ but have found nothing that has helped. For my benefit, please pretend you're talking with a monkey, I am not computer savvy at all. Cheers.

  • ITunes shared user vanishes when selected from left hand list

When I bring up iTunes and I get the other computers on the network and I select the "Music Server" we have (eMac G4) it just goes away. If I try from the server side to select my MBP it works just fine. All sharing is the same on all 3 of our macs. I have wireless thru airport "n" on 2 of the bases. What I don't understand is why it works server to laptop/iMac but not the other way around? Am I facing a conflict with the two bases? The main box is the newest model the other is the first giga bit model (053). I did have the eMac on hanging off the newest Airport Extreme and it worked fine. When I add the other older Extreme and hung the eMac off (the same as first iteration) I started this problem...I'm really confused?!?!?!?!?! ANY HELP?????

Restart of the eMac cleared it up. Was having problems with the two Airport Extremes working correctly. That was an amperage problem with my circuit protector - a whole nother story!

  • ITunes Sharing between Accounts

I have 2 accounts on my iBook and would like to be able to combine the libraries (so that when I'm in my account I can access music in the other account's iTunes library). Basically, I don't want to have to import all music twice and take up twice the HD space.
Is this possible? I've talked to customer support five times and no one has been able to help me. It seems that this should be simple!

The easiest way to do what you want is to place the "master" iTunes Music folder at the root of your HD and set up iTunes for all the accounts on your computer to read and write to that directory. The one thing this won't do is automatically add any new music to iTunes from the "master" folder. But that could be accomplished with an Automator Workflow, I think.

  • Deleting iTunes & System User Account on OS X 10.8.1

    Hi There,
I am trying to delete a previously created user ID and I am unable to do it. I tried on the preference, user & groups. That has been removed but the removed ID still appears in the iTunes and when I install any new application, the new application is installed into the previous ID's system folder.
How can I remove that ID from the Max System and also from the iTunes?
    Thanks.

Users on your computer are totally different from users in the iTunes Store (which are based on Apple IDs), if that's what you're talking about. And iTunes has nothing to do with installing Applications, nor is there a different System folder for different users. So your question is rather confusing.
Can you explain in more detail WHERE you're seeing this user name, how you're installing applications and exactly where they're ending up?
    Matt
