ITunes Sharing on a NAS?

I have a wired home network consisting of a Mac Mini running 10.6.8, an iMac with 10.8.5, and a MacPro with 10.8.5.  All three have iTunes 11.0.4 but my main iTunes library is on the iMac.  I've been running it as a shared library so that I can access it from the other computers but there are times when the iMac isn't running so I want to network the music library.  I got a Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo NAS, installed one harddrive, set up the iTunes media server on the LinkStation, created a new shared Music folder on the drive and then copied the entire iTunes folder from the iMac to the NAS.  I then did an Option/Start iTunes on each computer and told iTunes to Choose the new library on the NAS.  On each computer, this works perfectly and I can run iTunes on any one of them individually without a problem.  However, if iTunes is running on one of the computers and I try to run it on a second computer at the same time, I get the following error message:
Does this look like an iTunes issue to anyone?  Is there some other process I need to follow to allow all three computers to have simultaneous access to the library or is this even possible?  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Dennis

Yes you can!
The way i did it was open a new iTunes account on in a folder on you NAS drive and open your itunes from there.
If you change the location of your iTunes files by preference, advance then change - your Library data base file is still on your mac, thus you cant open from anywhere on your network.
But if you create a new iTunes account on your NAS its all located on there and all you have to do is locate your iTunes library file from any computer with an iTunes program to open and use your complete iTunes account and what's stored on it. but remember for other people to open the account you have to log off yourself.
The good thing is i can open it from my iMac on my profile so when i sync my iPhone i get my ical, address book email etc and when my wife opens it from her MBP and from her profile she gets all her ical, address book mail etc and we get to shall all the music, movies and applications.
the only downside i can see is its a bit slow over NAS especially over WiFi but thats what you get for all your eggs in one basket.
any amount of people can use your account this way and as for formating you will find the software that comes with your NAS will format it in its own way usually FAT that way any computer can connect.
any problems give me a shout.

  • ITunes setup on a NAS with multiple windows users - how?

iTunes setup on a NAS with multiple windows users?
I am very confused on what is the best way to handle this setup for my friends family.  Any help would be appreciated.  Sorry in advance as I know this is a long winded post - I have a feeling this will help others faced with the same issues or questions.
    CURRENT SETUP
I have three new Windows 7 machines networked (two desktops and one laptop) that have four users on each - as busy family with children who need the computers for homework, projects, games, etc...  The goal of this setup is that any user can log onto any computer and have there documents available to them no matter computer was free to use.  I set this up using the library function in Windows 7 and seems to work pretty well.
I have put a Buffalo Linkstation NAS on the system as well.  This was going to serve two purposes 1)  run some backup software to protect the computers and 2) consolidate the iTunes content in one place for all users.  There is also an iPad in the home that I should would be better served by accessing the content on the NAS without requiring any of the computers being on.  Dave is thinking about getting some other playback devices like Apple TV so thought a NAS would be a good way to go.
CURRENT ITUNES SETUP - I have created a new iTunes library on the NAS by holding the SHIFT button down while starting iTunes and pointed to that folder on a Share on the NAS.  There was no music on the system at the time as we are planning to copy this over from an OLD machine that is now not being used.  I have also authorized all the computers and turned on the home sharing feature (although I am not sure what good that does).
This “shift” button trick seesm to also point the default directory there without point to it in the advanced setup tab of iTunes.
I then synced one of the iPods with purchased content on it and synced that to the library after asking me to do so before an update.  All the content showed up in the library and was playable - awesome.
I then logged into each user on each machine (yikes) and installed iTunes  and used the “shift” trick to connect each users iTunes to the database on the NAS.  Everything seems to work - but I have not tested it thoroughly.
    SUMMARY
3 new Windwos 7 networked machines
4 identical users on each machine
    1 TB Buffalo linkstation
iTunes setup with the folder on a SHARE
all user’s itunes connected to the iTunes folder on the NAS
all computers authorized with home sharing turned on.
one iTunes user account signed in on each machine
multiple iPods and one iPad in the system
    QUESTIONS/CONCERNS
Is there a better way to do this on a NAS?
Would home sharing be better in some way?
I understand the NAS should show up under the shared section in iTunes - I assume that would mean that would mean each user has an iTunes library on their documents?
I have read that there may be corruption issues if users on the different machines try to access iTunes at the same time.
Will there be any issues syncing that various iPods with?
Ugh - sorry for the long post and all the questions.  I am just trying to find the best way to do this.  I wish Apple would put out a best practices document for setups like this.  Thanks in advance.

For reasons unknown Apple haven't chosen to allow iTunes to be suspended in one profile and active in another. My recollection is that this applies even if each profile has a different library, although it is some time since I've committed a personal test.
I'm not sure why my suggestion make less sense that your current approach?. As I understand it currently everybody is either signed into their own account when they can do something other than work with iTunes, or they sign into the special iTunes account where they can't access any of their other stuff. You don't have to disable fast user switching. Follow exactly the same steps, but make sure everyone closes iTunes before turning the computer over to another user. Disabling fast user switching helps to enforce that action.

  • Can the aTV read files from an iTunes library on my nas drive without my computer being on

I have my itunes library on a My Book Live nas drive that contains all of my digital movies and TV shows. I want to be able to watch my movies from the library without a computer running. I understand that Apple has chosen to chain you to the computer and your itunes account through Home Sharing but I can not see why they couldn't allow you to access a nas drive without a computer running because your aTV is tied to your itunes account also so why do they force you to run a computer 24/7 365 in order to access the files you have bought and paid for.
I have a love/hate for Apple because I love the quality of the products they make but I hate how they make all of the digital files you purchase only accessible through a computer running Home Sharing even though the files are not stored on the computer.
I have tried several things to get this to work without a computer but no luck. The only way I have found to be able to do this is to Jailbreak your aTV and install 3rd party software (which I don't want to do) that will allow you to by pass the computer and Home Sharing (which is dumber than ****) because that is all I want to do is eliminate the need of a computer running wasting electricity (I thought Apple was supposed to be an enviro friendly company, guess not). I am not trying to steal or give someone else my purchased movies and using the aTV and an internet connection they could still be able to tie your media to your itunes account so I just don't get there thinking, or lack of thinking I should say.
Is their a way to do this without Jailbreaking or modifying your aTV?
If not is Apple ever going to wake up and allow there customers to actually USE the media they purchase from them without Home Sharing and a computer running?

  • ITunes Server on a NAS...I don't get it...please help!

    Hello,
I currently have all my iTunes files (including the library file) on a small network drive. iTunes is set to point there for storing music and the library file, so any computer on my network can access the same library and info. All is well.
Recently, I started looking into getting a nice, big RAID 1 NAS for redundancy purposes, and I have come across some (like a D-Link and a Buffalo Linkstation Live) which claim to have a "built-in" iTunes server.
I guess I'm really confused as to what a built in server does that I haven't already set up myself with a network drive. I was just going to copy all my files on the new NAS, and set iTunes to look on that mapped drive for the library file and all the media files. So what does the "built in" server do on top of that? I can't figure out if this capability is something that should affect my decision to go with a particular NAS or not...please help!
    Thanks

I have the FD GeForce 1TB NAS set up as Raid 1. When I check the "itunes server" option, it simply showed the library in iTunes under shared libraries. I think it also made a distinct share for the library, even though I had already made one. So I turned the option off. I have all of my music on a share called "iTunes". If I have other computers in the house I'm sure they will still be able to see the music since iTunes can search for shared libraries. In other words, I'm not sure what the "iTunes server" option does that you can't do on your own. I think it just makes it easier for some.
Now after reading some posts, I suppose that other users would have trouble writing to my itunes library over the network, especially if it shows up as a shared library. Maybe that is the point of an itunes server? I'm not sure I want anybody writing to my library.
On another note, how can you point your itunes library file to another drive? I moved all the iTunes files to the NAS, but each time I open itunes it recreates the library and .xml files on the macbook HD. If other users can't find the library file, will they be able to listen? So all of the iTunes system files are on my local HD, but I have an artwork folder on the local and NAS, but I'm not sure which one it is using, do you know?

  • ITunes SHaring and airport setup

What exactly do i need in order to:
Be able to stream any of my music on my NAS to my Amplifier downstairs that is basic no network connectiviy?
Am i right in saying if i get a say Intel 3 or core 2 duo Headless PC hidden away somewhere with XP or Win 7 be better then  load itunes onto this load up all my music onto this either by a network drive or i may just plug in a 1tb usb drive.
Then downstairs buy an Airport extreem plug the jack into my phono of my amp.
THen from my ipad / iphone i can then control my itunes to play to the airport extreem/amp?
Is this right or any better solutions?

iTunes Sharing will affect bandwidth just as would any other network traffic. The impact can be estimated by multiplying the bit rate of the shared music by the number of people listening to a shared library. For example, if 10 people are listening to 128 Kbps tracks from other people's workstations, that would be about 1280 Kbps of network load. That wouldn't have much impact on a 100 Mbps network, but 1000 users sharing clearly would. So whether iTunes sharing is causing your performance issues will depend on how many of your users are listening to shared music. If it's just a few, that's probably not your problem unless they're sharing tracks with very high bit rates.
To block sharing, you can either turn off Sharing and Look For Shared Music at each workstation and lock them off using the Parental option in iTunes (Preferences -> Parental) or you can just block TCP port 3689 which is the port iTunes Sharing uses.
    Hope this helps.

  • ITunes Sharing not working on all Computers

Hi, I'm looking for some help with setting up home sharing between a 21" imac OSX 10.7.4, bought early this year, and a windows vista PC.
I've scoured the web looking for solutions before finally deciding to search for help here.
ok, the situation is that at the moment, I have a windows Vista PC which i use as a media centre for all my music, which i intend to share over the network to my imac, but for some reason, vista can see my imac's playlist, but the imac can't see the window's playlist. i'm also running a Buffalo Linkstation Pro Quad with itunes server running, whIch is also only visible on vista.
I've already set up static IPs for the imac, vista and NAS, but still to no avail. I've opened ports 3689 and 5353, and allowed access through the firewall on both norton 360(vista) and imac's firewall, and disabled windows firewall.
However, i've tested the home sharing connection on an ipad, and can only receive the imac's playlist, while the vista's playlist can't be detected.
This is all very puzzling to me, as it doesnt make any sense as to why the playlists aren't turning up, and worst still, there is no set pattern to the issues. Due to this, i cant pinpoint the exact kink in the chain. But to the best of my knowledge, i have done all i can to ensure an open connection between devices.
Oddly enough, itunes on my imac did manage to detect both the NAS itunes server and the Vista's playlist on one or two occasions, but eventually vanished never to return again. on both occasions, i was doing the exact same things as i did the other times i tried to configure itunes, except those other times failed to detect. I've run out of ideas.
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME. YOUR HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED as i use the imac for video editing and need the music libraries to be accesible.
    Thank you!

Thanks for the reply. I checked and both the service and process are running.
One of the windows machines was away with my brother at college, and he informs me that iTunes sharing was working fine for him there. I can only assume that the problem is due to something with my router configuration. Any ideas?

  • ITunes sharing no longer works

When I try to connect to my shared library I only get a dialog box mentioning "iTunes not accepting connections at this time, try again later." Supposedly this message only occurs when 5 other users have connected to your library in a single day. I've been getting this every day for two weeks.
    Specifics are:
    1. Updated to iTunes 8.1.
    2. Used to work fine- iTunes library on external drive connected to Mac Mini, sharing to local network in house. Same message received on all other computers in house from Mac Mini.
    3. No other users are connected or can connect, I live in the sticks.
    4. File sharing works fine- no problems with network.
    5. Tried turning iTunes sharing off then on.
    6. Shut down and restarted all computers on network.
    7. Checked firewall- set to accept all connections. Tried setting to "specific apps" with iTunes added but still doesn't work.
    8. Trashed iTunes preferences and restarted.
    9. Tried setting a password. Didn't work, so I returned it to normal (no password).
    10. Reinstalled iTunes 8.1.
    11. Turned off iTunes DJ.
    12. Connections to ports 443 and 80 are allowed in Little Snitch. Sharing still doesn't work with Little Snitch turned off.
I'm out of ideas. Apple Genius's are out of ideas at local store. Am I alone with this problem?

Bumping this thread, as I still have the same very annoying problem, ever since the 8.1 update.
I have a MacBook and an iMac, the first wirelessly connected, the second by ethernet, both to a standard Actiontec router. I can see the shared library of another person on the network, but neither of my computers can share with the other, and doesn't even show up in the "Shared" section of the iTunes display.
Does anyone have any idea about this?

  • Setting up Brand New iPad 2 - iTunes Sharing and Getting Files from old iTunes Account

Greetings.  I recently purchased an iPad 2 (convert after 20 years of PC use) and have been waiting to set it up until I knew the proper way to proceed.  I have multiple questions and am hoping those of you with more Apple experience can help out a convert .
I would like to set it up with a new iTunes account so when my wife gets her iPad 2 next year we can share apps and movies we buy on iTunes.  Do you always have to sync your iPad to your PC to get your latest purchases or can you do that via the wireless connection directly on the iPad after the initial set-up?
That said, if one of us buys an app/movie, will we both have to carry it on our iPads or will they store remotely on iTunes or on our PCs?  I'm just concerned about maxing out the storage space on the iPad.  Do the purchases need to occur on your PC vs. the iPad itself for both to have the app/movie access?
I've also read about iCloud issues and syncing all calendar/contact/etc. accounts if two iPads are set-up with the same Apple ID.  What's the best way to initially configure the iPads so that you avoid this headache in the future?
Once I get all this settled and get a new iTunes shared account working, is there any way to get the movies I have in both of our old iTunes accounts into the new shared iTunes account?  Can I simply drop them on a jump drive from one PC and place them into an appropriate folder on the new PC that the iPad sync's to if it does in fact need to sync?
Again, appreciate all the help and sorry for all of the confusion and multiple thoughts.  I would just like to set this thing up once and for all the right way.
    Thanks again

1, you can (re-)download a lot of purchases directly on the iPad without having to connect to your computer - apps and ibooks can be re-downloaded (as long as they remain available), music can be re-downloaded in some countries; tv shows can currently only be re-downloaded in the US. Re-downloading
2, films are a one-time only download, so you can either download it on your computer's iTunes and sync it to your device(s), or if you download it directly on the iPad you will need to then copy it to your computer's iTunes (connect the iPad and do File > Transfer Purchases) so that you can make a backup and copy it to your other iPods, iPads etc.
3, I haven't had any problems with iCloud, but then I don't share my account so it's only my account and contacts on my iPad and iPhone.
4, you can authorise your old accounts on your computer's iTunes (Store > Authorise This Computer) and copy the films onto it : File > Add File To Library - you can't copy or transfer content to a different account (nor can you combine accounts), they will remain tied to the original account
The iPad's manual has some info about syncing and each of the built-in apps (the iBooks app is covered in the manual though it isn't pre-installed, but you can download it for free from the store) - the manual can be downloaded from here http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipad

How can I store my iTunes library on an NAS (Fritz Box)?

    1. Drag the library to the external drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and point it there.
    2. Get a second. Having the backups on the same drive as the original data won't help when that drive fails.

  • ITunes library on a NAS

Hi,  I have a windows 7 PC on a gigabit network.  I have a D-link Nas 323 with 2x 2tb drives in.  I created a new library on my PC with files on my c drive but all my music and films on the NAS.  opened it up for the first time and all wored ok.  i then added about 800gb worth of music and films and now itunes doesnt open.  Is this due to the files not being read qwuick enough on the NAS?  Could someone maybe point me in the direction.  This worked ok with a USB drive atatched to my computer but went to a NAS for larger storage and for it to be on a raid.  i also wanted it on the NAS so my apple TV and iphone and airplay would be slightly quicker.

i'm in the process of moving my iTunes library to a NAS. you might find this discussion helpful.
basically, once the NAS is set up, i will consolidate my library to the RAID volume i created for it on the NAS via file (or, i keep forgetting for windows, edit) > library > organize library > consolidate files.
point iTunes media folder location (preferences > advanced) to the volume on the NAS before you start and make sure the copy to ... and keep ... organized options are checkmarked.

  • ITunes Match on a NAS?

    How do fellow Apple'ers,
Quick spec on what's being used at the minute:
    -rMBP
    -iPad Mini
    -iPhone 4S
    -Time Capsule
-ATV (don't know what gen you call it - the new one..)
    -iTunes Match
    Prospectively looking to add:
    -A NAS
-Mac Pro on release (for no other reason than it will complete my life..)
    So, what I'm looking to do;
-Have a NAS set as the main and only iTunes library (most likely set up as a 3rd party iTunes Server)
-Have iTunes Match see this iTunes Library (on the NAS), and upload for all devices to use in iTunes Match mode (including the rMBP)
Most other threads I've found basically say "point your rMBP to the NAS for the iTunes Server and it'll work" - which isn't what I want. I've had a play with this, but then the rMBP is seen as the 'host' for iTunes Match - therefore can't stream/cache songs - ie, when out of internet range, it can't connect to the NAS so hasn't any music cached on it.
Hope this makes sense to someone, and they can advise?
    Much love,
    Ash x

Presumably the Mac Pro will be resident on the network alongside the NAS?
iTunes Match requires a computer based iTunes library to act as the conduit to the Cloud.
The NAS is effectively a 'local Cloud', however it is unlikely that the NAS can host iTunes.
    So the options are:
    1. Use the Mac Pro iTunes library and the main conduit to the Cloud - periodically manually backup to the NAS, so the NAS can provide a local iTunes service; or
    2.  Configure the Mac Pro to always use NAS as the location of its iTunes library - a neat solution provided the NAS is always on.
In both options, once iTunes Match has completed its 'matching' / 'upload' the iDevices and rMBP can use Match as there source.  A NAS with decent RAID configuration makes a superb local backup option.

  • Using an "iTunes Server" on a NAS drive for several users

Like many others I'm trying to make a single drive containing my iTunes media serve different iTunes users round the house.
Will the following work? Comments welcomed.
Currently my iTunes Media Folder and media live on my main PC. About 130Gb in total.
I'd like to get a NAS drive that has "iTunes Server" functionality and put this NAS drive on our home network. Then I'd like to move my iTunes media folder location into the 'iTunes Server' folder on the NAS drive. I'd also like to transfer all the data files associated with iTunes to the NAS drive. I believe with iTunes 10 that shouldn't be a problem and that I can contunue to use iTunes on my main PC as I ever did....it's just the media and data files will now all reside on the networked NAS.
Now I'd like to point all the iTunes on the other PCs in the house to the networked iTunes Media folder and the networked data files. Then presumably they will boot up and be able to access everything just like my main PC.
I understand that if more than one PC tries to edit the data files and iTunes media folder then corruption will inevitably result. I wondered if this could be prevented by using access rights management to all the networked iTunes files so that only my main PC can actually edit anything, add music, etc.
That way I hoped that I may manage the library successfully, create playlists as required and have all the other PC users enjoy my work but without screwing it up!
Maybe an iTunes data file can't be read by two instances of iTunes at the same time? Perhaps a second PC reading the data files can cause a corruption, if my main PC happens to be editing those files at the same time?
In essence I want all iTunes related files on the NAS drive. I want all PCs(with iTunes) in the house to have full read-only access to the music, playlists etc. However I would like my main PC to remain as the sole machine that administers the iTunes library and related files.
Looking forward to any help. Like others I've spent many hours trying to ascertain the best way to share a single iTunes media store around the house.
I know I could leave my main PC on and have the other PCs get at the content that way. However the power consumption of my desktop setup is not insignifcant and we will have a NAS drive running 24/7 anyway for other duties.
    Hope that all makes sense.
    Cheers
    Geoff

I now realise that if what I propose will work then "iTunes server" is not required on the NAS. However if the iTunes Media Folder was placed in the "iTunes Server" on the NAS then other media players like the ROKU could access the files?

  • ITunes sharing works for Vista but not XP on the same network

So all the basic settings are right under Edit->Preferences to share and seek shared music on the network.
    Here's the topology:
    A - Vista Laptop (wireless)
B - XP Service Pack 2 Laptop (wireless)
C - XP Service Pack 2 Desktop (wired)
    A can see C
    C can see A
    C can see B
    A can see B
    B can't see anything
Since the other machines can see B I'm lost... can you help?
Message was edited by: Ryan Buckner

After digging and reading since I posted this question, I finally found the issue. My Cisco VPN client was set to stateful firewall (always on). When I turned off this setting, all machines worked for iTunes sharing. The Vista box was coincidentally working because the Cisco VPN client 4.6 didn't work on Vista.

  • Lack of vison or lack of time - on iTunes sharing

It has come to my attention that there are some serious gaps in Apple's apparent vision for iTunes, but is it just because they just haven't had time to implement it yet?
In this context any iTunes that is 'sharing' its Library is a SERVER and any other iTunes or TV that accesses this shared music Library is a CLIENT.
There is currently no way to satisfactorily share music across a network (to other Macs, PCs). Yes you can share, but it is seriously deficient. Let me explain.
If you 'Share' a library, other client devices cannot use the 'Sort' tag data you may have meticulously added to the main Library on the server. Neither other Macs, PCs nor even an TV (when streaming, don't know about when sync'd) can make use of this data. Sorting reverts to the old iTunes method, e.g. Sort Artist tag is ignored and the artists will be sorted alphabetically by the Artist tag (excluding 'The' 'A' etc).
Since this applies to all devices using iTunes sharing protocol (Roku Soundbridge also suffers) it occurs to me that this is a deficiency in the sharing protocol itself rather than the individual client devices.
It is also quite apparent that an iTunes client cannot use any Album Artwork that exists within the iTunes server Library. Is this again a lack of functionality in the sharing protocol? In this case I think not as an TV quite happily gets the Album Artwork from an iTunes server that is streaming the music (and also via AirTunes which is seriously cool:-).
So there are several problems that need fixing. Whether or not the problem is with the sharing protocol or just the client devices, iTunes sharing MUST be enhanced to include Album Artwork and the use of Sort data for ALL Apple's client devices.
Then there is the different problem of sharing the music data directly, i.e. not via iTunes 'sharing'. It is relatively simple to share the music and Album Artwork files across a network, but there are problems with this approach. Most notably that any music added via iTunes on one machine never becomes available on any other iTunes sharing this music data. They have to be manually forced to 'Add to Library' in order to pick up any new additions. You can choose to limit where to re-scan, but that requires knowledge of where the importing iTunes has actually added the files so re-scanning the entire music folder may be required.
OK, so it's not impossible, but having done this, any Album Artwork (i.e. iTunes downloaded) that was added by that first iTunes also fails to appear on any other iTunes, even after the new music has been 'Added to Library', so this has to be added manually at every other iTunes that shares this music. But how is this additional artwork stored? Is iTunes clever enough to see that the file already exists (in the shared Album Artwork folder) and so simply link the tracks to that, or does it download and store all over again and link to that. In the latter case that means every copy of iTunes sharing over this network will actually have its own copy of all the Album Artwork, even though they share the same main folder location. So 5 machines with iTunes sharing the same music, but 5 copies of all the Album Artwork:-(
Currently I get around this by simply copying the Library file from the machine on which iTunes imported the new music to the other machines and so they then get all the new music AND the associated Album Artwork. But, this takes careful preparation at each machine to ensure that the Library can be freely copied in this way (and actually work) and also it means that every machine has to use the same playlists because the Library file gets copied each time.
All in all, it's a mess.
Seems to me we should drop the whole idea of sharing the actual music (and Album Artwork) files and be able to rely entirely on iTunes in-built sharing protocol. But for this to be acceptable, the following needs to be addressed.
What we need is for iTunes sharing protocol clients to have access to (and make use of) ALL the data that exists on the server, in particular the Sort tags and Album Artwork.
Also, there needs to be the ability for different clients to be able to setup and maintain their own playlists, based on music in the server's shared Library. This is currently not allowed in iTunes, but why not? In a household with all the legitimate music stored centrally, why should individual users not be allowed to do this? iTunes can no longer share a Library outside its own local network, so I see no reason why this should not be allowed.
iTunes has such huge potential, it's frustrating for it not to be realised.
I guess I'm just sounding off here and not really looking for answers, although if I'm wrong about any of the above and it's already possible, chip in and let the rest of us know. Otherwise, we just have to wait for Apple to get its iTunes act together - but keep breathing in the meantime.
