ITunes sharing - using AirTunes and older Mac (Firewall)

iTunes lives on my 27" iMac and I would like share the library out to home computers. I plan to have an older iMac G4 publicly accessible so visitors can control the music on the home stereo. I can access iTunes via the iMac G4, I can get to my main library without problem. However, when I try to connect to my Airport Express Air Tunes I get a firewall issue. Specifically, the G4 gives me a message to change my firewall settings. The help information for itunes with Mac OSX Firewall tells me to click sharing ->Firewall ->iTunes Music Sharing ->Advanced -> deselect "Block UDP traffic." I have done this on the G4 firewall and the 27" firewall isn't even turned on. However, I am still not having any luck. Any ideas? FWIW, all software and OS are up to date.
My wife's MacBook Pro can connect to the AE Air Tunes.

Did you ever solve your problem? I just got a macbook with airport extreme card and then got an airport express mainly to play itunes through a stereo in another room. The macbook does this with no problem. However, I wanted to use an older powerbook G4 (867Mhz) with an airport (not airport extreme) card to run airtunes. The G4 gave me the same incorrect firewall warning even after I've changed the settings. Even with the firewall off, it only plays for a few seconds, then cuts out. I'm running 10.4.11 on the G4 and 10.6.2 on the macbook. I'm beginning to think the airport card just can't handle the bandwidth, even after I narrowed the multicast to to 1mbps.

If you add another Time Capsule, you can have one or both Macs backup to that new device.
However, please note that it is not possible to have backups "carry over" seamlessly from one Time Capsule to another.
If you add a new Time Capsule, each Mac that is backing up to the new device will make a new complete backup and then backup incrementally after the master backup is completed.

  • Can't use Airtunes and iTunes Radio together since recent update.

    Hi,
I was using iTunes to listen to internet radio through my speakers connected by Airport Express.
    The gear:
Signal starts with cable modem, ethernet connected to Belkin wireless Super G Router.
Then to my great love: Pismo PB with Airport card
There I'm running iTunes and using Airtunes to send signal to Airport Express which has speakers connected.
    This worked until recently.
Now, I can either use the Express for Airtunes OR my wireless router to receive internet radio.
    HHHHHHeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllpppppppppppppppppp

First try updating to iTunes 11.1.5.5, using an installer downloaded from the Apple website:

  • Help with iTunes Shared Library (Vista and OS X)

I am trying to share my Vista-based iTunes library with my new iMac. I have an issue now that iTunes does not let me select the shared iTunes library that resides on the PC. The following is how things are set up
    1) I've moved all of my PC-based music, my iTunes Library (.itl) file and the cover art to an external HD on my Vista PC.
    2) I've set permissions on all of the Vista files (music, library, art) to be read/write for available to all connected users.
    3) I have also mounted the PC-based external drive on my iMac. Permissions seem to be ok, as when I view files via the Finder, they are visable and accessible.
    4) However, when I try to open iTunes on iMac to change the shared library (using the OPTION key), the iTunes Library.itl file on the hard drive is completely greyed out. No matter how I change permissions or sharing on the Vista machine, I cannot seem to select the shared library.
    5) Interesting that I HAVE successfully accessed the same library through another Windows-based machine (Windows XP). In that instance I can access the network drive and select the iTunes Library.itl file no problem. Music streams fine after I do that. Also, from my iMac I am able to create files in the same directory where the iTunes files reside (using program like Text Editor) so it seems I do have write access and permissions to the directory.
Any clue why this is happening? It seems like iTunes is the one program that is not picking up the permissions from the iMac, but other Mac programs are. It's driving me a little nuts at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thx

    Bump. Same issue. Help please.

  • Screen Sharing using Back to my Mac

I'm trying to use screen sharing for the first time between my 27" mid 2010 iMac and 15" MacBook Pro Retina late 2013 using both OSX 10.9.4 on a local network using Back to my Mac feature.  I enabled screen sharing and made sure Remote Management is disabled and also on firewall the screen sharing has allow incoming connections enabled.  I also have my Back to my Mac checked on my iCloud settings.
And so I opened Finder window on both computers and on the sidebars from each of the computers it showed the shared devices.  So from my Macbook or iMac, I click on the device and then click on the share screen button and a menu popup asking me how i want to connect either as a registered user or using an Apple ID.  I selected using and apple ID and it automatically provide a drop down showing my apple id and I click connect but all I get is an error message saying "Authentication failed to iMac" or vice versa.
What am I doing wrong?  Is there any other option for me to do screen sharing without using a third party app?  Please advise.  Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Thanks for your input. At home, I use a Time Capsule, with the absolute latest firmware, so it should be suitable.
However, I might have problems with the setup? If I turn off and on Back to my Mac under iCloud settings, sometimes I get a message that I should enable NAT/UnPP. Checking the setup of the Time Capsule, the router is in Bridge mode (NAT off). If I try turning on NAT, I get an error in Airport Utility about double NAT.
    Any advice on this?

  • Any way to video chat between Messages and older Mac via iChat?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion yesterday and am beginning to regret it - I discovered that I will no longer be able to help my parents troubleshoot their MacBook as they have an older MacBook with Leopard 10.5.8, and their MacBook is not upgradeable to Mountain Lion given its heritage (too old). Prior to my upgrade to Mountain Lion, when they needed help we would both launch iChat and I would ask to take control of their screen.  Their account setup on iChat was through an AOL AIM username.
I looked into whether I could still launch a video sharing session with them using Messages from my end and they using iChat from their end (still with their AOL AIM username) but can find no evidence that that will work.
I am hoping that someone has figured out how to make all this work.  I researched FaceTime and it doesn't appear that it supports video chatting/screen sharing.
My last ditch option will be to see if I can gain access to their machine via internet remote access - but I'd rather steer clear of that.
Anybody know how to make this work - video chat and remote screen control between my Mac running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and remote Mac running Leopard 10.5.8?

Apologies if this is what you linked to... I cannot open the link on my office PC.
Have you tried the ReelPortal app?  This should be able to cover both of your needs: it allows video chat between Playbook and PC, and essentially broadcasts the video chat to a site.  (I have not attempted to capture the broadcast).  It's not the prettiest app out there, but does what you're looking for.

  • 27 LED monitor and older Mac Pro compatability

Will the new monitor work with older Mac Pro's?

Why does the Apple store list the ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro as only the Early 2008 & Early 2009 models?
Only Apple knows, but the comments section, and many posts here, show it works in any Mac Pro/
I'd like to use the new 27" LED with my original 2006 Mac Pro 1,1. I currently have the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.
You can use it with the dual-link DVI port (only one port is dual-link) on the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT with a converter
    <http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-Dual-Link-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-USB-Po wered.html>
The ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit says it's only compatible with the Mid 2010 version.
There are reports that it also will work in any Mac Pro.

For three DVI displays, you need dual-link adapters

  • AirPort Time Capsule and older Mac?

I got an Airport Time Capsule as a gift. It will not connect with my older MAC with an operating sytem of 10.5.8.  Is it the operating sytem or is it the TW cable high speed connect that needs adjusting or is this even a possibility to ever run?  Need to know for possible return of equipment.

You need to use the airport utility v6 which requires at least Lion OS.
Or you can use the airport utility in latest iOS.
What modem is your TW cable using? Is it a full router with wireless?
I also tried to connect through my iphone, which has the latest software update and it wiped out the wi-fi on the phone.
When you try and setup the TC it will need to change to the wireless on the TC..
You need to have an ethernet cable from the TW modem to the WAN port of the TC.
And you then put the TC into bridge mode.. of late Apple seem to be trying to force the TC to take over as the main router which can be problem.

  • Video iPods, USB2, Firewire and older macs - a different approach

I've been trolling the discussion boards here because I find myself with the same problem many others have noted here: I just bought a family member a Video iPod (5G) for Christmas, I realize they no longer support firewire, only USB2 and I only own an older eMac that has firewire but NOT USB2 and no PCI slots for USB2 cards. I await Christmas with dread when, after opening their gift, they'll want to put content on their new 5G iPod and we'll sit around all day while that happens.
I'll not get into why Apple dropped firewire from the 5G iPods.
My different approach is that what is needed is a bridge connector or hub that will bridge a USB2 cable to a firewire port.
There are a number of combo hubs but these are just 2 hubs in one with each bus (USB2 and firewire) having it's own separate connection back to the host computer. And if you connect the USB cacle back to a host with USB1, System Profiler will tell you rthat your USB2 ports areoperating at "Up to 12 Mb/sec"
Even the Universal Dock will will not get USB2 speeds out of a mac with USB1 ports. It clearly states, :...allows you to connect your iPod with the cable that came with it."
I've done a lot of searching and the closest I've come up with is this:
    http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/pixela-pixuvcdu1w-firewire-to-usb-20-bridge-cabl e-016285.php
but that goes the wrong way. Plus it's expensive ($80 - $90).
It's designed to connect a firewire equiped DV camcorder to a PC that only has USB2 ports.
To me this sounds like an opportunity for some of the 3rd party vendors playing in the Apple world (Griffin Technology, Belkin, XtremeMac etc) to fill what is obviously a a major need here. Reading these forums there seem to be many many people that have older Macs without USB2 and 5G iPods.
We need a USB2 to Firewire bridge connector for all of people with older macs and 5G iPods.
    Someone please help us.
    Bob Jakuc

Thank you for your response. I mention this in my original post. In fact, I bought one of these thinking it might solve my problem. It doesn't. In effect the D-Link DFB-H7 is 2 hubs in one enclosure. To use the firewire ports you have to attach the D-Link to your computer via a firewire cable. To use the USB2 ports, you have to attach the D-Link to your computer via a USB cable. You can't have a single, unified host connection AND use all the ports on the D-Link. The USB ports on the D-Link aren't even active if you don't connect to your computer via USB.
I'm upset for two reasons: 1) the D-Link hub advertising isn't explicit about the need to have separate hub to host connections for each bus you want to use and 2) since my eMac only has USB 1.1 ports, the USB2 ports in the D-Link are 'stepped down' to USB 1.1 speeds (12 Mbps).
I'm also frustrated because I'd add a USB2 cardbus card to my eMac but it looks like the slot over the CD-ROM drive is only for Airport/Airport Extreme cards.
Does anyone have any info on that? Is the slot over the CD-ROM drive in a 1 GHz eMac a general purpose cardbus/PCMCIA type II slot or is it just for Airport cards?
Maybe I'll ask over on the discussions for the eMac.
    Thanks again.

  • HT201343 If i can mirror from and older mac in iTunes why not from the mac itself?

I have a 2010 macboook pro, the forum states that I should not be able to use mirroring with apple t.v. however, I can mirror things from Itunes, if itunes can my computer should be able to as well, right?

That's not mirroring, that's basic airplay. Mirroring is showing exactly what is on your computer via the Apple TV.
Airplay mirroring requires the newer processor to encode the video.

  • Follow up question: Is there a way to wirelessly use Airtunes and internet

I had marked this post as resolved, but things have subsequently become quite 'unresolved.'
This is my original thread where I explain the problem and Tesserax provides an answer:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1702063&tstart=0
Here is where I am now:
I made the changes that Tesserax suggested, and everything worked fine for about an hour. Internet and airtunes worked simultaneously. Then, for no reason that I can discern, airtunes stopped working. It would no longer connect to remote speakers, giving me instead a -3256 error message. I scanned the forum for a fix, found that there have been firmware updates. I found that I had 6.3 installed on the AX, but I re-downloaded it just to be sure. No dice. I also made sure that the UDP was not being blocked in the Pref/Sharing/Firewall window. It wasn't. In fact there was no UDP button at all. Finally, when I try to use the Airport utility, both the base station and AX turn off and disappear altogether during the utility scan. They don't reappear until I close iTunes and utilities, and only then after rebooting themselves.
Any ideas about what might be causing all of this?
    Thank you,
    Peter

Yes, you can do both at the same time, by reconfiguring the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a "wireless client."
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing AEBS's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Home Sharing on Itunes, Shared network loads and then closes

When trying to share two librarys from my pc and mac, I will try to open my shared network and it will begin to load but before anything shows up it closes and goes back to my music library. Please help!

Thanks for the link, Alix.  Yes, firewall is disabled for iTunes and the specific ports are open.  Thanks for the link.
I also checked my power settings and confirmed that my computer is not going to sleep, hibernating, or powering off..
On last use this afternoon, home sharing cut out after just 10 minutes of connectivity and needed to be reset.
Then, I left ATV running and trying to connect to iTunes.  After 25 minutes of the 'wait' icon, it suddenly reconnected itself.  This is getting more and more puzzling!

  • ITunes Sharing: 2 user accounts, 1 mac

I've turned on Fast Switching, I've enabled sharing in the Preferences...and I still can't get the sharing to work.
It seems to me that it's been broken since I upgraded to Tiger. Does anyone have any pointers.
I'm not trying to share 1 library amongst 2 users, I'm just trying to allow 2 user accounts on one machine to see (and listen to) each others' libraries.
    Thanks

    Ray:
While the article was written for iTunes 4.5, it does not imply that you can simply activate FUS to share music. It is very clear that unless your music files are in a public folder, the are not going to be accessible by other users on the computer.
    To quote from the article:
To share your music with other accounts on the computer:
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Locate your iTunes Music Folder. It is stored by default:
    ~/Music/iTunes or ~/Documents/iTunes/.
b These folders cannot be accessed by other accounts on the computer. In order for other users to be able to access your music, you must move it to a publicly accessible location.
The Public folder in your home directory (~/Public), or to another folder outside your home directory
b that other users have access to,
such as /Users/Shared. Tip: The tilde "~" refers to your home folder. For more information see Mac OS X: Using Your Home Directory.
    3. Drag the iTunes Music Folder to a publicly accessible location. Important: Do not move the iTunes folder, the iTunes 4 Music Library file or the iTunes Library.xml file.
    4. Open iTunes.
    5. From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
    6. Click Advanced.
    7. Click the Change button.
    8. Navigate in the Change Music Folder Location dialog to the location of your iTunes Music folder.
    9. Click Choose.
Repeat these steps for each account that is sharing music with other users.
