ITunes showing inaccrurate number of authorized computers

I previously had 4 computers "authorized" for iTunes, 3 at home, one at work. I've "deauthroized" my work PC several times but my account still shows 4 computers as authorized. The only ones that really are are mine, my wifes and my laptop. How can I correct this?

you might want to check to see if any of the PCs have multiple authorisations on them:

  • TS5376 Does uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes affect the number of authorized computers listed for my account? When I reinstall, is iTunes considering my computer a new authorized device even though it was installed before??

    Hello,
When trying to install the recent iTunes update, I got the Error Message "Program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer."  Apple's recommended solution involves the step of uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes on my laptop.  I'm concerned that when I reinstall, iTunes will think it's a new device and use up one of the 5 device authorizations the iTunes accounts allow.  Do I need to do anything in particular to prevent that?  If yes, what should I do?
    Thank you.
    Katya

Actually, I'd use the following user tip rather than the Apple document as a guide. (At the time I'm writing this reply, the user tip is much better organised, more accurate and way more up to date that the Apple document.)
Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates
In the normal course of events, and uninstall/reinstall doesn't affect your number of authorisations on a computer. Usually, it requires a serious hardware change (like a new hard drive or motherboard), or a BIOS update, or an upgrade to a different Windows operating system to confuse your iTunes and make it think that it is now installed on a different computer before you end up using extra authorisations for the same operating system for the same computer. (So if you ever have to do things like major hardware changes, or BIOS updates on the computer, deauthorise the PC first, and then reauthorise after the change has been carried out.)

  • HT1349 help  I would like to authorize my new laptop for my itunes library  I had 5 authorized computers on my account not sure which ones they were one of the autorized computers has crashed so i want to transfer all of my account history onto my compute

my acct. shows that I have 5 authorized computers for my itunes acct.  not sure which 5 but I do know it is not my new laptop.  our main home computer that I use for managing and adding to my music library may have crashed .  so  I deauthorized all 5 computers (that was my only choice).  I was then hoping to authorize just one computer (my new lap top),  I was then hoping that my entire music library would then show up via my itunes/apple account   where is it ?
How can I transfer my entire itunes acct. history onto my new lap top?  any suggestions?    or how can I recover my music library off of a potentially crashed computer?

You can deauthorise all 5 at once, then reauthorize the one you want.

You need to log into iTunes on the computer you want to deauthorise. Otherwise, contact contact iTunes Store support to see if they can help.

  • How can I increase the number of authorized computers?*

I have itunes on my company computer.  My company gives me a new computer about every 2 years.  I have already used 4 out of my 5 available authorized computers for synching my phone.  In another year or so, I'll have exhausted my 5th computer.  How can I increase the number of authorized devices? Thanks.

  • Upgrading Computers and number of authorized computers

I have two computers at my house. I have gone from Win XP to Win Vista on both computers. I have synced my Ipod to both these computers, with both the old an new versions of windows. Then I just recently upgraded to Windows 7 on one computer. The problem is, the Ipod thinks it is authorized to 5 computers, when it is still only two. Now I want to get a new computer, and upgrade the other computer with all the old parts. The problem is that I will not have enough authorizable computer licenses for these two new computers.
Question: How do I de-authorize computers that I don't have anymore?
PLEASE HELP ME!I don't want my Ipod 2G 32GB to become a desk weight.

    Hello Pebz13,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
So are your saying that either of your machines have multiple authorizations on it? If so, I would check out this Apple support document.
[One computer using multiple iTunes Store authorizations|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1206]
Otherwise, if you have reached your limit of 5 authorized computers, you can always opt to use the *Deauthorize All" option. This doesn't actually deauthorize any machines, but instead, resets the count of the number of computers you have authorized back to 0. For instructions on this method, see this Apple support document.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
And as a side note, there is no way to deauthorize a machine you longer have access to. Sorry.

  • ITunes for Windows freezes when importing a library. I have a large but not huge library of mostly iTunes purchased music on two authorized computers and would like to sync the files, export the library as a playlist, and import it on the other computer.

I am running iTunes for Windows 10.2.2 on Windows 7 Home. I have my iTunes library on both this computer and another authorized machine running Windows 7 Professional. I have a large but not enormous library, as I'm one of those people who doesn't pirate, use torrents, borrow from a dozen friends, or whatever other shades of gray you might imagine. It's mostly iTunes purchases with my old CD collection imported. I have started using the following technique to sync my libraries between my two authorized computers, an ability which you can probably all agree should one day be added to iTunes -- that would be different from Home Sharing, because the music would be stored locally and thus available on the road. With the added benefit of the entire library being backed up on the other machine in real-time. Anyway, when I switch from my desktop to laptop and vice versa, I use the following technique:
Connect both machines to the home network. One machine is the "Active" machine, which has most recently been used for iTunes media, purchases, ratings, etc.
On the "Active" machine, File-->Library-->Export. Save the file as "Library.xml" on the shared drive of the other machine.
Right-click "Library.xml" where it's been saved, and open another file that has two lines in it: The root path of the iTunes library on one machine and the root path of the iTunes library on the other machine.
Do a find/replace all in Notepad to make the library XML file point to where the files will be saved on the "Inactive" machine.
Run Microsoft SyncToy to synchronize the files between both music libraries; the most recent files win. This avoids copying the entire multi-gigabyte library over the network.
Open iTunes on the "Inactive" machine.
Go to Music, Select All, Delete. Keep files.
Do the same for Movies, Music Videos.
Go down to Playlists, select the top one, hold down the delete button until they're all gone.
File-->Library-->Import Playlist. Choose the "Library.xml" file you saved.
First a status bar comes up that says, "Importing library." It has the continually-scrolling progress bar, not the one that starts on the left and steadily creeps right. Then after about 30 seconds, that clears out. Wait. Typically a few minutes. Eventually a status bar will pop up saying something like, "Evaluating gapless playback information," or something like that.
The "Inactive" computer is now the "Active" computer. I can now play my library, it has all my playlists and metadata from the other machine.
Delete all the duplicate playlists named "Music," "Genius," "Purchased," and "iTunes DJ."
Well, I just upgraded to iTunes 10.2.2 a few days ago and tried to do this again like I've done it dozens of times before. Now, iTunes just goes unresponsive after the library import. It got through the "Importing library" bar to the long wait and stopped. I can still multiprocess and use other programs, but iTunes is hovering back there not responding to clicks. Task Manager doesn't seem to think iTunes is using my CPU, and I don't see my hard drive rattling. Any thoughts on why iTunes might hang up when importing a large library?
... Also, please help lobby Apple to come up with a network sync tool built into iTunes for a user with multiple authorized computers. Something different than Home Sharing so I can pull my laptop off the network and still have the synced library with me. And all my metadata changes will sync. The technique I use seems a little kludgey, don't you think?

iTunes isn't an editor. You need an app that's intended for editing audio files, like Adobe Audition (http://www.adobe.com/products/audition.html) or Audacity (free in the App Store).

  • Number of authorized computers

    Hi,
I'm trying to authorize a new computer but iTunes says "You cannot authorize more than 5 computers. You have already authorized 5 computers ... bla bla bla...".
So I tried to go and see the list of authorized devices: three computers an one iphone.. In fact in the account page it says "4 authorized devices"...
Just to try, I've removed one of them. Now in my account it says "3 authorized devices" (one iphone and two computers).
Then I went back to iTunes to authorize the new pc. It still says that I've authorized 5 computers..
    What's going on???

iphones are not authorized at all.  Authorization applies ONLY to computers.
Try deauthorize all, then authorize the active computers.
You are probably looking at associated devices which is not the same as authorized computers.

  • Incorrect number of authorized computers

My iTunes account says I have authorized 3 computers. However, I only have 2 computers and they are they same 2 I have always had with iTunes. How can I find out what the third computer is and deauthorize it?

You probably authorized one of your computers more than once. Simply deauthorize it.

  • ITunes 7.01 Incremented Number of Authorized Computers

After installing v7.01, upon downloading my first song from the iTunes Store I got a message saying that my machine had been successfully authorized and I had used 3 of 5 of my available authorizations.
Nothing has changed on this PC this entire year, let alone since I installed v7.0 of iTunes and I did not deauthorize the PC prior to installing v7.01
Has anybody else encounter this and is there a way to set the counter back to "1", where it should be?

  • HT1420 Error: 5 Authorized computers when I have only one.

I did not have 5 computers authorized, only 2. But the miserable pop up message kept appearing so I deauthorized all computers, rebooted and followed insturctions to authorize the one computer I have so I can sync my itouch and new iphone.
However, I am still getting the error message and cannot prevent the message from coming up, despite my account showing I have no authorized computers now.
What can I do? Apple is useless as far as any support on this.

    Authorization applies ONLY to computers.
ipads/ipods/iphones/apple tvs are NOT authorized at all.

  • How can i change my 'authorized computers'?

my iTunes says i have 4 authorized computers with one left, but i only have 1 computer ( tho it now has a new HD so maybe iTunes thinks its #2. but that still leaves 2 mysterious authorized computers)  how can i update the authorized computers or at least see WHICH ones they are??

You can deauthorize all the computers and then authorize only the ones you have or use. See iTunes Store: About authorization and deauthorization, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420

  • Itunes doesn't show Home Share words or list of other authorized computers

I have "turned on" Home Share. I have authorized a second computer. When logged in to the second computer, the Itunes screen does not show the option Home Share, or show the names of the authorized computers. So, no sharing of music is possible. What is the fix for this, please? The Help catalog does not answer the question.

I don't know if you've done this already, but you need to:
    Turn on "home sharing" turned on all of the relevant computers;
    Make sure the computers have to be on the same network;
You just turned on "Home Sharing", some people report that they had to quit iTunes and restart it before "Home Sharing" worked; and
If those previous steps failed to solve the problem, you might want to check the firewall settings on each of the computers to ensure that UDP Port 5353 (which allows the computers to see each other and appear in iTunes on the other computers) and TCP Port 3689 (which allows the actual "Home Sharing" features to work) are both enabled.
See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1601 for how to configure the default Windows firewall. If you're running a third party firewall (sometimes part of your antivirus software), the particulars of opening the appropriate ports on the firewall may differ.
If you think the problem may be a firewall issue and you're not 100% comfortable with how to "open ports", a quick test would be to temporarily disable the firewall on both machines, restart iTunes on both machines, and see if it works. This is just a test to see if the firewall is the problem, but you should promptly turn your firewall on again and if "Home Sharing" worked while the firewalls were turned off, you just need to proceed with the particulars of opening these two ports on both machines. I've also seen people open the port in their default Windows firewall, but neglect to realize that they might have two firewalls (e.g., neglect to check their antivirus software's firewall). Unfortunately, the particular instructions on how to open the firewall ports will vary from one firewall software package to another. But if you have problems, let us know what firewall software you're running and someone can probably help. (Or just check with your firewall vendor.)
    Hope this helps.

  • HT1420 Help I've hit the limit of my authorized computers to use iTunes.

Can someone help me with the following questions to help me free up some computers for my 5 computer authorized computer limit to iTunes.
Is it possible to get a list of which computers are authorized? This would be helpful so I can find the computers I want to deauthorize.
Is there any way to remote deauthorize computers? I've had a number of computers over they years which I have used iTunes on and most of them have died so I am unable to deauthorize them (I'm probably not the only one with this problem). This would so help those with stolen computers.
Does "authorized computer" include iPads and iPods? I would know the answer to this if I could get a list of authorized computers. I hope not, because between my family there are currently 2 Mac PCs, 3 Windows Laptops, 3 iPods, 2 iPads (which adds up to more than 5) all of which access my iTunes account.

    1)  No.
    2)  Deauthorize all.
    3)  No, ONLY computers.

  • Upgrade to iTunes 8.0.1 using one of 5 authorized computers

I just upgraded to iTunes 8.0.1 and it would not allow it until I used one of my 5 allowed authorized computers. This happened before to iTunes 7. Now I have 3 authorized computers left befor Apple deletes my downloaded songs. Why is this happening? Is there a phone number to call to talk to a human about how messed up this is?

Firstly Apple will not delete your purchased songs if you use up all your authorisation.
If you find you have used all 5 authorisations, but some of them are not in use, you can deauthorise all your computers in one go and then reauthorise only the ones you want. An option to do this should appear in your account at the iTunes store when you have used all 5, but you are only allowed to do it once a year.
