  • Fix? iTunes slow to import CD, sync iPod, freezes on credits - Page Faults

    All,
Using Windows XP on a computer with 512 M of memory (lightning fast for it's time) I found that iTunes would import CDs at 0.3x to 0.7x, way too slow. iTunes resonded slugglishly to UI commands. And the credits screen (help - about iTunes) would freeze. Other applications do not have this problem. I found that iTunes memory management is sub optimal, at best. This causes iTunes to swap portions of its active program memory to the hard disk, slowing the interface by a factor of x1000.
How to verify if this is happening:
    1. Open task manager by RIGHT clicking on the date on the windows control bar
    2. Click on the "Process" tab, then from the menu select "View" then "Select columns . . "
    3. Make sure "CPU", ("handles" (i.e. open files), "threads" (i.e. parallel processes), and "page faults" are checked. Page faults are swap of memory to the hard disk.
    4. Open iTunes, use as usual (e.g. view credits)
    5. If iTunes becomes slow (right away in my case), watch for increasing page faults (what I experience) or excessive threads or handles.
In my case I'm getting over 1000 page hits a second when viewing credits. Someone didn't use good programming skills. (Not necessarily Apple, see below)
Note: I see, and expect, the CPU to go to 100% while importing CDs.
Please note: ** I do not use a mail client on this machine. ** I use a web based mail program and do not use MS outlook, and I don't want to. I only mention this because when I used iTunes, it locked up and I also received an error saying that I needed to setup my outlook client. Turning off automatic updates seems to have solved this lockup.
Since I run Word, excel, iExlorer, games, and windows media manager without error I'm having trouble understanding why iTunes uses so much system resources. Poor development tools? Virtual machine? Bug in complier library?
    Thigs to try to fix:
Since this is a memory issue: Try one or more of the following:
Minimize the screen when importing CD (screen calls are a hog)
This is what made the most improvement for me.
    Stop all other programs
This allowed me to stop the credits screen.
Try stopping / halting your antivirus programs
Try updating your Video card driver.
Note: I have a 'business' style video card. Aboslutly no bells/whistles. I do not wish to upgrade to a directX card just to allow easy transfers to my iPod / iTouch. I am using an Intel 82810E Graphics Controller with drivers provided by Wicrosoft.
Set your performance for best performance:
+ Right click on the "My Computer" icon
+ Click on "advanced" - "Performance" - Visual
+ Click on "adjust for best performace"
Note: This changes the XP look, had no effect for me.
If you are still having trouble, close iTunes, open the Windows Media player to import your CD with the following settings: Tools - Options
Player - Deselect start player in media guide (unless you really like it)
Copy Music - Deselect Copy Protect Music (otherwise it only works in WMP)
    Root cause?
I suspect that the iTunes is calling a function that it expects the video card to do easily. I suspect that the video card doesn't have that functionality, so the video card driver tries to emulate the functionality. The slow response from the driver apparently causes iTunes to go haywire.
    If you read this far:
Please let me know if you found this helpful by writing a response.
If you can think of anything (other than buying a new computer) that would allow this applicaiton to work, let me know. BTW: A real old version of quicktime works just fine on my 486!
    Apple developers:
I would be open for a test bed if you need older HW to qualify on.
Any idea why the credits would cause the page faults?
Any way to use a bare bones video library (e.g. no scrolled fades etc.)?
For an application that essentially copies files to my iPod, it sure uses a lot of resources.

    Welcome to AD!
This is a user chat board - Apple developers won't be seeing your post. You could re-send it using
itunes menu > Help > Provide iTunes Feedback
    Hoewever, don't expect a reply.
the iTunes 8.1 system requirements page states
    +A DirectX 9.0-compatible video card with 32MB of video RAM; 64MB recommended+
It's not that surprising that itunes doesn't act right on your PC.

  • ITunes automatically imports music after re-boots (damaged .itl file)

Every time I start ITunes after my computer has been re-booted, ITunes starts importing my music library and says I have a damaged Music Library file (itl). If I allow ITunes to import my music files then it works fine (all playlists and ratings intact) even if I exit & re-enter the Itunes Application. However, as soon as I reboot the system I get the same damaged file dialog box. Also, I've tried waiting after I have booted the system for a long time to make sure it isn't conflicting with startup processes.
I have a lot of songs and it takes ITunes a long time to import each time, and it is really frustrating. A temporary work-around is that I make a backup copy of the "itl" and "xml" files each time after I exit Itunes when I have made changes. Then after a reboot when I start Itunes, I stop it from importing the library, finding artwork, gapless scan, etc... I copy the previously saved "itl" & "xml" files into the ITunes folder and the ITunes program will then start up correctly with all my music files, ratings & playlists.
    _*A. COMMENTS*_
    1. Since the "itl" file I copy into itunes folder (as per my work-around)is an exact copy of the "itl" file that was originally in the ITunes folder after a reboot, I don't think the ITunes file is actually damaged, since ITunes will boot from this file after Itunes is started a 2nd time. This also shows me that it is not a path issue.
    _*B. SETUP*_
    1. Dell 3.4Ghz Pentium 4
    2. MS Windows XP Home Edition (service pack 3)
    3. Recently upgraded to ITunes 9.0.3.15 (did not resolve problem)
    4. McAfee Security Center virus/firewall software
    5. Ad-Aware spyware checker(resident)
    6. Spy-bot Search and Destroy spyware checker(resident)
    5. My Music files are located in C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\My Documents\My Music\ (itunes folder is also in same folder)
    6. My Itunes Library .itl file is 2,842 KB
    7. My Itunes Music Library .xml file is 16,580 KB
_*C. WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR*_
    1. I have re-installed ITunes
    2. I ran scan disk (fixed errors & checked physical disk). It did say it repaired something with an "XML" extension, but I didn't write it down because I thought it fixed the issue, but I don't think it was the itunes xml file
    3. I cleaned a bunch of junk files (internet cache, etc) and defragged
    4. I completely un-installed ITunes and ran a registry cleaner to remove all references to Itunes, Then I installed ITunes. ITunes imported my library and lost all my ratings & playlists however it found all of my artwork (not just automatically created from internet) I re-used an old .itl file for ratings/playlists. However I did try with the newly imported "itl" file and the same problem was persistent
    5. I tried restoring my computer to month ago when everything was working correctly
    6. I tried for hours looking through multiple forums and the ones that I found that have the same problem (only after reboots) were never resolved. Most of the others just tell people how to get their library back
    7. I tried to call Apple Itunes tech support on the phone and was told that Apple does not provide Itunes phone support for PC's. I did pay good money for 30Gb & 16Gb Iphones, so I am giving Apple Money. I would own a Mac however my profession uses software not supported by Apple.
    _*D. QUESTIONS*_
    1. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I'm going to try to figure out how to start in some sort of safe mode and log the processes to see if there are any conflicts, but I'm running out of options.
    2. I did copy rather large 1200x12000 artwork from the internet into some of the CD's because I was printing them, however I later removed the artwork and replaced it with 300x300. I noticed the Album artwork Cache & Download folders seems rather large and convoluted. I was thinking about possibly deleting all artwork from my library and deleting these folders to see if there is something in there.
Please Help, I've spent far too many hours trying to resolve this issue. I just don't understand that after uninstalling, and cleaning registry that re-installing didn't fix this issue.

    Followup:
The link you posted wasn't really any help, but I believe I have finally resolved the issue (after 2 consecutive reboots without problems -- knocks on wood). I wish I could single out exactly what resolved the issue, but I went crazy and did a lot of things last night/this morning (and didn't have the patience to reboot after each single change).
Here's a list of a few things I remember doing
    1. Installed updated hardware drivers using Uniblue driver update software (a couple were bundles that affected quite a few things). I booted up this morning only to get a repeated "REFMONINITIALIZATIONFAILED" dialog with the blue screen of death. I wasn't worried as I did a complete backup of all my personal files last night, anticipating a full rebuild today. So the next time I rebooted I used the "last known good configuration".
    2. I don't have any indexing programs (that I'm aware of), but I clicked the library file, xml files and all other files in the itunes library root directory and unchecked the "For fast searching, allow Indexing Service to index this file" box after right clicking and selecting "properties" and then "advanced"
    3. I rolled back ALL Uniblue SpeedUPMYPC2009 system tweaks (except internet) that were automatically done when I ran the program on 1/10/10.
I have a strong inclination that one (or more) of the Uniblue system tweaks did something that prevented my library file from being accessed the first time after after a boot that I started ITunes. I apparently hadn't accessed ITunes for a couple weeks after I ran the Uniblue program, so it didn't register that it could have caused the issue. At some point in the future I'll try to pin down which tweak caused the problem, but for now I've wasted far too much dealing with this and don't care if my computer runs a few milliseconds slower.
    Thank you for responding

  • Mysteriously slow import

    Hey,
I started to import two double CDs. I last imported a CD a couple days ago, and only new thing on computer (which does interact with iTunes) is Ask The DJ. Checked/repaired permissions from HD Utility before and after.
Three CD's and all but the last two tracks go like clockwork, before I suddenly notice the fourth disk has not ejected 10 minutes after insertion. Cancelling and importing last two again leads iTunes to indicate they will take 25 & 30 minutes to import...and and a few ours hour later the first is still importing. The tracks are 4 and five minutes in length.
Have ejected disk, quit iTunes, re-impoted and really slow import drags on.
In the dock clicking on the iTunes icon offers "force quit" at bottom and "iTunes not responding" at the top of menu. Does this indicate the import has already failed. Actually the first of these problem tracks arrived in the library, after 30 minutes, but with some 'scratch like' interruptions.
What do you think is going on?

Hi Winston, well, I've examined the disk which has a minisule scratch but is basically spotless...I keep my CDs in their cases. I've given it a wipe with some soft cloth.
Last week my brand new Superdrive imported from a CD with scratches on like it was a cats plaything.

  • Slow importing times from cd

Can anyone help me. i am running windows xp with service pack 3 and i am running itunes 9. i have no problems importing songs from the itunes store when i am online . however when i want to import a cd into itunes, the import times are extremely slow. importing around .06x not like i use to 2-3x .im not sure which settings need to be changed. seems like this happened after updating windows.any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi sadielexus1,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. If your imported music never syncs to your iPhone, you may want to try un-checking and then re-checking the "Sync music" checkbox in iTunes by following the steps in the article below:

  • Itunes 10 imports cd tracks in alphabetical order only.  What setting do I change so it imports the same order as the cd?

itunes 10 imports cd tracks in alphabetical order only.  What setting can I change so that it will import cd tracks in the same order as on the cd?  Any help would be appreciated!  I have this issue on only 1 of my 2 macbook pro computers, so I'm guessing it is a setting issue--but I don't know where to find it.

The apparent order of a burned CD may depend upon how you have iTunes display it - https://discussions.apple.com/message/17827921

  • ITunes only imports part of a song

I've tried uploading two cd's today and it begins to import all songs fine.
Then when approx. half the songs are imported, iTunes only imports a few seconds of each remaining song. I can end up with anything from1 second of a song to 2 minutes of a song that should be 4 minutes long.
I've run diagnostics and it passed all the tests, so I don't know what to do now?
ps I have the latest version of iTunes.

It is a bug. Some folks have found that putting the import settings on WAV corrects the problem. After you verify the WAV files are complete, you can convert to your preferred format.
If that does not help and you are tired of fussing with it, rip your CDs in another program, e.g. Windows Media Player, and add the resulting MP3s to your iTunes library.

  • Aperture 3.1.3 Very slow importing raw files

Aperture 3.1.3 Very slow importing raw files please help
Pro Photographer. I have a Mac Pro Quad core 1 yr old with 12GB Ram. I import via 2 Firewire 800 card readers - A Lexar & a UDMR Reader.Only using them singly. System has 4 1TB hard drives 1. Applications, 2. Aperture Library, 3. Aperture Vault, 4 Time Machine
On a photo shoot, first CF card may download and complete in less than a minute but the next card with a similar number of images may take 10 minutes.
Sometimes if I swap card readers, this can speed up download but then everything slowly grinds to a halt.
I have closed down all other programmes, switched off Faces and Enable Gestures - switched off  Look up places.
Situation driving me nuts as we shoot and view images with customers immediately after the session and download time effecting the amount of time we have to do this. Nothing seems logical as such a high spec machine should theoretically fly through this.

Have you upgraded your OS ans all your Apps to the latest Versions and also rebooted the system?
Turn on the Activity Viewer (Windows ->Show Activity) while importing, to see how Aperture is spending its time.
Also launch some tools from the Application -> Utilities folder:
launch the Console window, to check for diagnostics /error messages
launch the Activity Viewer, to see how much RAM and CPU time Aperture and other processes are using.
How much space is free on your system drive? And on the drive you are importing to?
If you find in the Activity Viewer, that Aperture is slow, but de facto using not much CPU time, then the problem may be a corrupted Aperture Library or corrupted preference files.
Try to import into a new, empty Aperture library and see if the problem persists.
If you have no problems with a new Library, try the Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
Start with repairing permissions and repairing the library.
If none of the measures outlined there, or you need further help, please report back.

  • Aperture sometimes slow import slow reaction on highligts and shadows

    1. Aperture sometimes, one out of three times perform a slow import from a compactflash card. Normally 10 images (nikon d-200 10 mb) in less than a minute. Sometimes the same ammount takes more than 5 minutes. Reconnecting the cardreader on the front usb connection solves the problem.
    2. Using the sliders on highlights and shadows, the adjustment of image takes a little time, no instant reaction.
    3. Aperture is installed on a 250 gb hd (first) (standard installation version 1.5.2). The data is installed on a second 500 gb internal drive. Drives never go to sleep. 4GB internal ram. Video card 7300 GT.
I have talked to different people about this performance issue and got different answers, which range from:
    a. This is the best performance with aperture with the current system. If you want more buy a better video card.
    b. Your video card is bad, mainly the vram. Replace the video card (warrenty still applicable).

Mac OS X 10.4.9 to boost image import speeds
    By Prince McLean
    Published: 09:35 AM EST
Apple this week dropped yet another pair of pre-release Mac OS X 10.4.9 builds on its developer crowd, inching the software closer to a public release.
The diligence with which the Cupertino-based company has been refining the software may signal that Mac OS X 10.4.9 will be the final maintenance update to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger before attention is drawn solely to Leopard.
As was the case with prior seeds, developer notes accompanying the latest builds -- 8P2132 (Intel) and 8P132 (PowerPC) -- are said to reflect no known issues with the software.
People familiar with the latest pre-release say Apple notes just one significant change since builds 8P2130 and 8P130 were issued last week, specifically a bug fix to ImageIO that was affecting image import speeds.
    This is from Apple Insider.

    Try this,
    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

I tried to copy & paste to show the advice I found because the post would not allow me to reply. Tha'ts why it looks wierd.
