  • Slow ripping speed in iTunes

I get around 4x-10x when importing CD's. Is this normal

I have noticed the same thing, but attributed it to the slower DVD-ROM drive. Perhaps that was the wrong assumption, but what I really want to address it the following comment:
    so maybe the
newer (Universal) version of iTunes is the problemr
rather than the MacBook - anybody else seen the issue
    on other machines?
I have had crashing issues with iTunes on my MBP. I believe that it is because of the Universal version of iTunes. I have a post on this issue in the iTunes discussion (look up "iTunes freezing"). Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

  • Slow ripping speed - can't figure out why....

When ripping at aac 128 or 160, I only get speeds up to 5x or 7x (depending if it's the beginning of the CD or the end). I cannot figure out why this is:
--The drive is rated at 24x read speed
--This happens with every CD I try
--The setting for both IDE contollers are DMA
--The processor is Core Duo at 1.83. When ripping only 50 to 70 percent of the processor is used.
    --7200 rpm hard drive
    --1 gig ram
    --error correction is not enabled
    --no other programs are running
Another problem is that while ripping, the computer becomes extremely slow - I can't even type! When I press a key it takes half a second for that letter to show up!
I have had other computers with much slower specs that ripped CDs to iTunes much quicker. What can this be??
Someone please help me, I have been trying for a while to get to the bottom of this, and I think I may be losing my mind.....
    Thank you....

  • Slow iTunes rip speed

Have seen previous threads on this topic, but no answers. Just got an iPod for xmas. Am trying to rip CD's and getting speeds of 1.2 to 1.5X. I'm using 6.0.1 on an iMac. I do not have the use error correction box checked. The CD's are spotless. Is this fixable? Am I doomed to slow download speeds? Are earlier versions of iTunes better?

iTunes' AAC encoder is heavily optimized for the Velocity Engine instruction set, which G3 processors cannot take advantage of, so I suppose that your slow speeds might be normal. Encoding to MP3 might be faster.

  • Win XP Pro, iTunes - V Slow Rip, WMP10 3 times as fast on same PC

    Hello All,
Well I did it - I took the plunge and went out and got me an iPod after everyone saying how great Apple are. Used to have (still do) a beasty that plays MP3 and WMA and I am in the process of converting my CD library....
    End of pre-amble.
Anyhow - I have a strange and disconcerting problem. I have so far ripped about 500 of my CD's - ripped them to WMA at 192kbs, using WMP10. The PC I use is being dedicated for this purpose. When ripping to WMA (with error checking) the thing flew by (very fast - average CD took about 5 - 8 minutes).
But now I have the iPod - decided to use iTunes, and set it to Rip my CD's to AAC (Apple's "native" format, at 128 kbs). Problem is the first CD took over 1 hour to rip - that is actually slower than playing the thing!! It was occasionally "ripping" at about 0.8x (so iTunes tells me). So decided to remove error checking - well that was an improvement now it only takes about 18-25 minutes to rip a Cd - and according to iTunes we are at a rate of about 3x.
I have the latest XP Pro updates, I have the latest iTunes (just downloaded from Apple) - but this thing is a DOG...
Has ANYONE got a clue as to how to get this thing to work faster? I cannot believe that it is SO bad (or SLOW)....at this rate I'll be 80 years old before I get my CD's done.
It is obviously NOT the PC, nor the drivers - these go at a great clip when using WMP10.
If anyone can post any light as to how to give iTunes a swift kick up the jacksy to make it do its stuff - it would be truly appreciated.
Although I like the player - so far the software has not been satisfactory.
HP Pavilion, AMD Athlon etc   Windows XP Pro   Its Fast......
      Windows XP Pro   Its Fast......

I am not re-ripping my CD's to AAC
    Huh?
Then why did you write, "decided to use iTunes, and set it to Rip my CD's to AAC"?
If possible (and for best quality) you should RIP for the CD and not convert between lossy formats (AAC/MP3/WMA).
My question was simply why does iTunes take 3 times as long to RIP a CD at 128kbs AAC then WMP10 does to rip a CD to 192kbs WMA, and what can I do to give iTunes a boost?
    In response to yoru question, Pac wrote;
"1) UPDATE FIRMWARE for the CD burner drive and get the latest updates for your system, like BIOs hardware ect ect from the PC makers site
    2) Slow the burn speed from "Max" downto 16x 8x or 4x"
The reason I would prefer to go with AAC is that for the "same" bit rate/quality as MP3 you actually end up saving some space - on my calculation about 25% - so that is preferable.
You must be calculating something incorrectly.
Using iTunes to RIP, AAC and MP3 at the same bit rate are almost identical in file size.
The quality is definitely not the same.
There are better MP3 codecs available(LAME).
if there is other software out there that will RIP to AAC - and is faster than iTunes - then let me know.
Yes, there are different apps that will RIP AAC, but I can't recall offhand.

  • How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes??????

How many thousands of Apple TV users have to scream their complaints before Apple will respond to the fury over the impossibly slow download speeds of movies bought through iTunes?

As jules says, your rate (currently at least) may be slow.
If it used to be good I wonder is your ISP is slowing ('throttling') your speed after you've used so many GB of a quota each day or month - check what they think you should be getting as a download speed.
While Apple's servers do occasionally play up, it's generally the ISP being slow not Apple.
If you're using Google's DNS servers that has caused issues for some.
Recommended speeds for near instant playback:
    SD         2.5Mbps
    720p      6 Mbps
    1080p    8 Mbps
Is your speed test from somewhere like speedtest.net?
It might be helpful to post Mbps to ensure we/you are not confusing speeds by using different units to those measured.

  • Slow ripping in newest iTunes update

I just updated to iTunes 7 for my Mac,and I find that when I try to rip CDs now, the are ripping very, very slowly, such as 1.1X. They used to RIP at 7 or 8X, so it takes nearly 45 min to rip a CD. I checked and I am ripping in mp3 format at 192 mps, same as I did before. Any ideas why ripping is taking so long now? Also, is there any way to stop the ripping process once started? I don't see any options to do this. Thanks for any help!

As in previous versions of iTunes, you can stop ripping by clicking the "x" in the right hand side of the status window at the top middle of the screen - the one that shows you ripping progress on that track.
I get the same problem - ripping speeds are 1.0x or less, compared with 10.0x or better in iTunes 6. Other threads cover this too - you're not alone.

  • Itunes rip speed

Has anyone tested ripping a CD yet? I was wondering what kind of average and max rip speed you were seeing. I have a G4 1.42 with pioneer 107 with firmware update to unlock extra burn and read speeds and I average about 18x and I have seen about 25 once in a while. Does the Mac Pro kill this or is it limited to the speed of the DVD drive? I have a Mac pro on order and was just curious about a real world test.

I have a Mac Pro 3.0 Ghz with two superdrives. I imported a cd earlier today, and on average, I was getting 25-28x.
    Hope this helps.

  • Getting slow LTE speeds on 5s

I will notice I'm getting really slow LTE speeds when streaming music on my iphone 5s because rdio, pandora, itunes radio and sirius xm will pause for long periods of time. The short remedy to this is me having to turn on/off airplane mode and it will work as normal for about 10-15 minutes before going really slow again.
Does anyone think this is the LTE on my phone having the issue? I have Verizon with unlimited data.

    Hello there dmaynard83,
It sounds like your LTE speed is lower than expected, but seems ok for a bit if you toggle Airplane mode on then off. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help resolve issues with the cellular data network:
iPhone: Troubleshooting a cellular data connection
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3780
    Restart your iPhone.
Make sure that your software is up to date:
Check for a Carrier Settings Update: Tap Settings > General > About.
Check for an iOS Software Update: Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
Note: Some updates may require a Wi-Fi connection.
Remove the SIM Card and reinsert it. Allow the iPhone to acquire the network again.
If your SIM card has SIM PIN enabled, try turning it off: Tap Settings > Phone > SIM PIN.
Try another location. If a different location works, but the original location still doesn't, contact your carrier to report the issue.
Reset network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    Restore the iPhone as new.
    Contact your carrier to:
Verify that the iPhone is properly set up on the account with the appropriate, current data plan.
Verify that there are no account-related blocks.
Find out if there are specific error messages in the carrier logs that could help determine why the issue is occurring.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, contact your carrier, make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store, or contact AppleCare to troubleshoot further.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Slow ripping: SOLUTION

Slow ripping is related to having lots of playlists.
As a workaround you can make a new library for the purposes of ripping by holding down the option key when you start iTunes (shift key on Windows). After ripping, switch back to your original library and drag the new files in.
This will be fixed in an update.

No offense, but this seems like a loophole... not a solution.
It sounds like we won't get a real "solution" until a fix is available on the next update.
So, when will they send the next update?
This is a major problem with iTunes 7. Yes, I do have a ridiculously large iTunes library, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY don't want to use the loophole you suggest. I had a horrible experience on my old iMac when I upgraded from OS 9 to OS X, and my computer was never able to integrate the two libraries properly. Plus, it seems like a lot of hassle. And I'm not sure why having a lot of playlists would affect ripping. I was under the assumption that the playlists just referred to the actual songs in my library, they don't really take up much extra space inof themselves, right? See, I have almost 4000 cds and I like to rip them to my iTunes library so I can make mixes for my car or my iPod. I have dozens of playlists, but I don't want to lose any of them. Arrrggh! This is SO frustrating!!!
But, thanks Mike, I do appreciate the suggestion.
I just wish Apple would give us a real solution already. And it's a shame, really, because othere than this major annoyance, iTunes 7 is SO freakin' cool! I love the jukebox style of orgazing my music. It makes it much easier to browse through my collection to put mixes together.
    Thanks again.

  • Slow internet speed, being used by unknown websites

    Hello all,
For about a month i have been experiencing slower internet speeds than usual. Contacted the isp and went through all the processes and there was not a problem at their end. I was advised to go to network utility and check how many processes there were, found out that there was too many to count.
It seems i have internet processes coming from my macbook ip address from uknown sources such as ookla.com etc. Now i have downloaded spyware programs for mac which have failed to find any viruses or spyware at all.
Now i know the problem is coming from my macbook as the unwanted guests our appearing under the macbook ip address, my router is receiving the right speed so it can't be the isp?
Right now i am just wondering what to do to stop these processes using up my internet connection and potentially turning my router into a server.
    Any help would be grateful.
    Mark Lees

Yeah i have little snitch but it appears to not spot these websites, i can send you a screenie of the netstat screen
Then that would imply the only connections going out from your mac are from legitimate applications.
lots of things will engage outbound connections.
    safari
    firefox
    itunes
    spotify
and sites that you visit that have embedded video often host the video on other servers. So you would be suprised at how many socket connections you have at anyone time.
If you have little snitch look at the monitor window and it will show all the recent connections.
You could reset little snitch to default rules and then you will be prompted to allow or deny each new connection.

My Verizon iPhone 5 has very slow upload speeds that causes my apps to time out.  Is anyone else experiencing this?  It only happens on 4g.

Then Restore your iPhone Firmware with iTunes on computer. See if better. If not, talk to Verizon and see if they know of the problem and if there is a fix. If not, then make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple for resolution under Warranty.

  • WRT310N Playstation 3 Slow Download speed and general lag

Hey guys, I just recently bought the WRT310N and got both of my computers working with it. One is wired directly into the router, while the other is running off wireless. My Playstation 3 is able to connect to the router but I am getting an extremely slow connection speed.
Right now, both PC's get about 6.4-6.5 Mbps download speed while my Playstation is anywhere from 600 Kbs to 1.2 Mbps. I have plugged in my Playstation 3 directly into the modem and got a speed of 3.2 Mbps and was downloaded a demo very fast, but I do not recieve anywhere near those results when using it wireless.
Any advice? I have tried opening the ports, but that only seemed to slow it down. A couple of days ago I opened the ports specific to the game NHL 10 and for two days I was getting such a good speed in the game that it felt like I was playing offline, which was great! Then this morning, it just seemed do a complete 180. Now when I play the game I get an extreme amount of lag, and my other games like CoD4 get random lag spikes. Like, I'll be running and I get a lag spike which seems to happen fairly consistently every minute or so.
Any advice? Should I try opening the ports again or what?

I think you need to adjust the wireless settings of your Router, The wireless settings on your Router must have been setup to its default that's the reason you are receiving low signal strength on your PS3.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
