Itunes slow start up, constant freezing/cursor spinning indefinitely...

Itunes has been freezing constantly, cursor spinning, hard restarts a part of life now. Many freezes in iMovie as well.
Have a G3 ibook - too old?
Could it be the external drive that all music is stored on? I have 60 GB of music on an external drive (through firewire).
Help!

But by the time I can get to the desktop to open Activity Monitor, the problem has passed. It's all between the chime and logging in. I've looked in Console but don't know how to interpret what I see there. Do these mean anything?

  • Satellite L300 - Very slow start up and freezes

    Hi all,
I have a Satellite L300 which has treated me well - however over the past 2 months it has got really slow and freezes quite often. I have run through anti virus, spybot etc and come up with nothing.
Last night I tried to reformat the system by pressing and holding 0 which did not work then tried with F8 which let me do a further scan but no reformat. I am now quite pleased that I failed to do the reformat as I purchased windows 7 after the original purchase of the laptop.
Any ideas anyone - or anyone with the same/simular problems?

    Hey,
That means you have Windows 7 installed at the moment and not preinstalled Windows version?!
Well, in this case the HDD recovery option is not available anymore. You can do this on preinstalled Windows only.
To format your notebook you need Toshiba recovery disk.
    Did you create it?

  • Solution to iTunes slow start up

I have been having a problem with iTunes on my Macbook Pro whenever I opened iTunes it open straight away but just hung for at least a minute. I checked on the activity monitor, it showed iTunes was using 100% CPU and then stated 'not responding' after about a minute iTunes then became active.
I found that the problem was that I had Last FM and TuneUp plug ins on my mac, I deleted this from my user folder/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins once these plug-ins were deleted iTunes instantly ran faster, iTunes now loads up and starts playing a song in under 10 seconds rather than 1 minute.
Hope this helps any Mac users out there that might be having a similar issue with iTunes

Thank you so much for this post. After updating iTunes to support iOS 4.3 my load times were in the 5-10 minute range!! Removing the iLike plug in instantly fixed the load times.
    thanks again

  • ITunes slow start up

Whenever I run itunes, it takes about 10 minutes to start up.
This has just recently been happening after I installed the new 7.6.1
I have tried defragmenting and reinstalling itunes and quicktime, but nothing works.
Does anyone know what to do?

Do you have a large library and do you have a lot of playlists?

  • Why is iTunes slow on start-up? ...color pinwheel forever...

I am also using Tune-up software. Both applications start-up together.  At first, it was only Tune-up that was slow starting up. Now, both iTunes and Tune-up take a significant amount of time before I can use either of the apps. I see the color pinwheel for up to five-minutes. Is Tune-up the culprit?

  • Latest iTunes version: extremely slow start-up

    My set-up:
    - Windows 8.1 Pro x64
    - iTunes 11.1.2 x64
    - large MP3 collection (hundreds of GBs... don't ask how)
    - Moved Music library from C: drive to D: drive
The combination of Windows 8.1 and iTunes 11.1.2 or either of them, causes iTunes
to start up very very slow.
I deleted my iTunes library and started from scratch, but no effect. My iTunes library (under Music) doesn't
contain the songs, just links to another folder on another drive (fixed harddisk).
After you start iTunes, you see the memory usage slowly crawling to 250 MB, then it starts and works.
    But it takes 3-4 minutes.
    What's new ?

    Apple just released 11.1.3
    From the release notes:
This version of iTunes resolves an issue where the equalizer may not work as expected and improves performance when switching views in large iTunes libraries. This update also includes additional minor bug fixes.
I can confirm that my issue has been solved. iTunes loads after a few seconds and switching view doesn't crash it anymore.
    Thanks Apple !!

  • Itunes constant freezing and cannot restart

Hey, I've been having a lot of issues with my itunes for the past week or so. Every few hours or so (sometimes within like 1) my itunes will freeze completely. Once it freezes I'll close it or end the process in Task Manager and it generally shuts down. Now if the constant freezing wasn't enough of an annoyance, the itunes process also hangs in Task Manager after I've shut the program down. I have tried to end the process with taskkill, but it never works. While the process hangs it continues to consume computer memory and I cannot use itunes anymore. It just won't open anymore. The only way around this is to restart the entire computer. (Which is a huge pain!) I'd rather not have to restart my computer every time I want to listen to some music.
    Some things I've tried -
Uninstalling itunes and other apple services completely; normally and by using revo uninstaller on other occassions. Then doing a fresh install.
    Installing older version of itunes.
Using CCleaner to search for errors.
Checking to see if there are any firewall conflicts.
Doing a complete virus scan with Malwarebytes and Avast.
Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening, and/or know any fixes? If so, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Here's my computer specs -
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
    System Manufacturer: Acer
    System Model: Predator G5900
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU    650  @ 3.20 GHz (4 CPUs), ~ 3.2 GHz
    Memory: 4096MB RAM
Page File: 2366MB used, 5677MB available
    DirectX Version: DirectX 11
    Itunes 10.7.0.21
    Quicktime 7.73.80.64

Figured it out (I think). Seems to be an iTunes problem. I found some articles on this site about bugs in Version 7 so I deleted iTunes from my PC, reinstalled Version 6, drained down my iPod, hooked it back up, restored the OS from Version 6 and now, 3 days later, all seems to be working.
If you have a look over some of the discussions on this site you'll see that this is somewhat of a common occurrence, but Apple don't seem to be admitting it.

  • MacBook Pro (mid-2009) is a complete mess: constant freezing/crashing

Let me start with a bit of history: I bought my MBP in August 2009, and since then it has gotten progressively more aggravating. The hard drive failed a year ago and I had it replaced in April, and then it failed once again, and got a new one in October (2010), along with a new hard drive cable.
Unfortunately, about two weeks ago, the computer went completely on the fritz. It would freeze (beachball) for no apparent reason, other than when the hard drive was being used, such as going through iTunes, Safari, or Aperture. However, after doing a disk check, both in Disk Utility and using fsck in Single User mode, there were absolutely no errors to be found, which, unlike the two times my hard drive failed, shows that the HDD is indeed okay.
I did an archive and install and it seemed to have helped the problem for a grand total of 2 weeks. This week, my computer starting going at it again, and not even consistently. On Tuesday, it would be just about unusable, beachballing at the slightest "load" (such as opening a third tab in Safari), and that one freeze would bring down the entire system. Everything, even if it's working, is slow and laggy--things like scrolling down or clicking on something might trigger a beachball for a second or two, or just take far too long even with no beachball. After a bunch of forced restarts, my screen began flickering on the edges, most visibly at a high brightness. However, after several more restarts, it quit doing it--this also happened during the first set of crashes two weeks ago.
Yesterday, my computer was more or less fine, and I might've only restarted it once or twice. Today however, we're back to where we were two days ago--constant freezes that all but prohibit me from even going on the internet. The computer gets stuck going to sleep and has trouble waking up. It doesn't respond fully to when I plug it into my Henge Dock (the Henge Dock is not the problem, because the MacBook acts just as badly on its own), in that the display never shows up. One time today, it woke up from sleep, but the menubar icons (SystemUI Server) had crashed, and subsequently everything else as well.
The most confusing part about all this is that there is NOTHING to be seen in Console in terms of any crashes, whether an app, the kernel, or any processes. I also took my computer to the Apple Store this week, and Spotlight didn't work except for maybe a dictionary entry on the term entered (I don't use Spotlight so I never noticed this). Even when booted off an external HDD, that external OS couldn't search my hard drive either, or it was really, really slow at it. More surprising were the results of the hardware test; it came up completely clear, with no errors. The genius suggested I do a clean install of my OS, which is a ridiculous solution, as I had done this last year already and the OS I was running before had been migrated from multiple computers for years beforehand. I'm sure you all well know how big of a pain it is to do that. Otherwise, it's sending the computer over to the Apple depot.
I'm sorry for the extremely long-winded rant/problem descriptions, but I really just want to know from people with perhaps more experience in incomprehensible Mac problems what might be wrong with my computer. I really think it's a deep hardware issue, such as a bad logic board. I'd like to hear some opinions before I back everything off and ship this POS (the most unreliable Mac I've ever owned) to Apple. Thanks so much for reading and I hope somebody can help answer my question!

After opening the computer up the only evidence of where liquid has been is on the corner with hard drive / cd drive etc. There is not evidence of liquid damage to logic board on the otherside of the computer. Hard Drive and Ram have both been replaced.
Obviously there is still a chance liquid has got to the other area and I have not realised it...

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro: freezing and spinning wheel

    Hi there,
I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro (I know, old) that's been in very good condition. I upgraded my OS to Mavericks in May, which is when it started being slow and crashing/freezing around twice a week. For example, just doing normal things like surfing the web or checking the Airport or battery life will suddenly freeze the cursor which will then turn into the spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I can wait it out if it's a few minutes but sometimes I have to manually turn off the computer and then turn it back on when it's been hours of no change or improvement. I know it's probably best to downgrade back to Snow Leopard but I'd really like to keep my OS. Are there other things I can do to optimize my Mac? I've tried keeping fewer files on the desktop and emptying out the trash often and it seemed to help for a while. Other suggestions?
    Thanks for reading!

Wow, that post looks like a mess...I will try to make it more readable.
Thanks for your reply. I had to wait a few days for the problem to crop up again. I followed your instructions to the best of my ability. The thing is that the problem (i.e. freezing and spinning wheel) happened at 8:19 and the closest messages in the Console were are time stamped 8:17 and 8:25. So I will put them here for you to look at if you don't mind:

  • Cannot get iTunes to start, no matter what fixes I try

    Hi all!
I was running iTunes 12 on Windows 64x computer. My iTunes started crashing a few days ago and now won't open AT ALL. Not in Safe Mode or anything. Won't create a new library either. I get no error message either.
Please don't tell me to uninstall/reinstall iTunes or Quicktime, I have scoured the internet and Apple support community forums and I've just about tried every single fix I could possibly find.
This is the first thing I tried: http://support.apple.com/en-za/HT1923
so please don't suggest that one again. I've even tried unistalling quicktime and also reinstalling the latest version. I have downgraded my iTunes to a previous version. I have tried using an older library file. I have tried the msconfig fix. I have tried the sfc /scannow in command prompt too. It won't even open in safe mode. It won't let me create a new library. NOTHING.
Some of the articles I read:
Sometimes (usually late at night when I need to get to bed) itunes will not respond once it opens on my windows laptop.  Get twirly spin and if that ever stops, itunes freezes and I cannot do anything with it.
Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates
iTunes for Windows doesn't open after upgrading in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 - Apple Support
Issues installing iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
itunes will not open --windows 7 64bit
And NONE of those solutions have worked!!!!
I thought it might be a problem with IOBit software which I installed recently, so I uninstalled that, but it didn't make any difference.
I have enabled iTunes and Bonjour on the Firewall too like it says here: How to enable iTunes in Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 firewall - Apple Support
I have even looked at msvcr80.dll and QTMovieWin.dll. I must say, copying QTMovieWin.dll has kept iTunes running longer in Task manager than anything else, a whole 45 sec. But it still didn't open!!
Please if anyone has help it would be appreciated!!
    Thanks a lot!

    Actually my iTunes just started!!!!
So if anyone else is having this problem, the last thing I tried was copying the QTMovieWin.dll from my C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support folder to my C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes folder and started my iTunes Helper.exe
    Hope that can help someone!

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

When I say the freezing happened suddenly, I can recount to a few occasions over the past couple of weeks where I have been watching netflix and around halfway through the program I was watching, I'd get the SPWOD and need to do a hard reboot. The major issues started this morning which I can't link to the installation or update of any programs. I have managed to update to Yosemite today - however that hasn't fixed the problem. In saying this though, the system has been stable for around the last hour, but I've only opened Safari and no other programs.

Well, as I read on the subject, a lot of people are experiencing this issue so I don't expect to hear a quick recommendations, still ... Mine is that I upgraded to the last version of iTunes yesterday. Till that moment both Quicktime and iTunes worked fine. Today I tried to launch Quicktime several times to play my mp3 CD but failed, at the same time it start freezing. And if the first two times I was able to extract the CD, then the last time it was impossible and it still is inside my Mac, meanwhile I even't can't  shut down or restart the system, despite two attempts to  end all working programs  in a forced mode. iTunes won't launch as well. What's going on and have you some ideas what to do? Any your suggestion appreciated greatly.Thanks.
P.S. Forgot to mention I tried to access MP3 playlists through Finder. It doen't respond.

    Hey scrutinizer82,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with iTunes after updating. Let’s see if we can isolate this issue by starting iTunes in safe mode:
iTunes: Troubleshooting issues with third-party iTunes plug-ins
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3430
There are several ways in which an add-on can cause iTunes to act erratically, such as those listed below:
    - Loss of iTunes functionality, such as the Visualizer.
    - Distortion or irregularity in the iTunes interface.
    - Slow performance.
    - iTunes won't open or quits unexpectedly.
    - You see an alert while syncing stating "... cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified."
If you notice any of the above symptoms or other unusual behavior, you can disable any plug-ins not manufactured by Apple by opening iTunes in Safe Mode. This is done by holding down the Option and Command keys (on Mac OS X) or holding down the Shift and Control keys (on Windows) while opening iTunes. If performed correctly, you should see the following dialog before iTunes finishes starting up:
"iTunes is running in Safe Mode. Visual plug-ins you have installed have been temporarily disabled."
If the above does not resolve your issue, I’d like to isolate further by testing in another user account:
Isolating an issue by using another user account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4053
    Symptoms
When isolating issues and/or troubleshooting software issues in OS X, you might want to use a different user account. Learn how to use this technique to narrow down the cause of an issue.
    Resolution
The issue at hand may simply be caused by a bad preference setting or user-specific data file. With proper isolation, you can avoid time-consuming and inappropriate troubleshooting methods.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Slow start up / "ghost programs"

I had some trouble with my harddisk when it filled up and became slow, so I made a clean install and copied back my things from Time Machine. But, and this problem happened before that too, my iMac takes forever to startup (about 5 minutes).
And every now and then a program (mostly iTunes) will become non-responsive, but apparently shuts down in a normal fashion when I close it. But the symbol in the dock will say it's still running, and in a mystical way... it is. Because force shut down doesn't work, neither with any program or a restart of the finder, and the only thing working is to do a cold restart of the machine. Interestingly, the activity monitor doesn't find the programs that hangs either, even if they are running.
    I don't understand a thing right now...

    1. Check your Startup Disk. Go to System Preferences/Startup Disk and make sure that your Mac OS X system drive/folder is selected as your startup disk. Otherwise the system could take longer searching for it every time you boot.
    CHECK
    2. Repair Permissions. Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select your hard drive on the left and under the First Aid tab click Repair Disk Permissions.
    CHECK
    3. Verify Disk. While you are in Disk Utility after you Repair the Permissions click Verify Disk. This will check the integrity of your volume directory. If there are any errors that need to be addressed you will have to boot up to your install disk in order to run Repair Disk.
    CHECK
    4. Check your login items list. Go to System Preferences/Accounts/Login items. If there are any Applications there that should not be simply remove it from the list.
    CHECK
    5. Disconnect any external devices for testing purposes. External hard drives, ipods, scanners, printers, have been known at times to cause startup/shutdown issues.
    NOT DONE YET
I've bought a new 1 TB MyBook today so I can remove a Maxtor-disk I have who's been difficult to read from (it doesn't always appear in the Finder), so I'm moving my music and different stuff right now and I'll have to wait some time to do a startup without external disks. In addition I have a 500 GB LaCie with two partions (250 on each, one for Time Machine) who seems to work fine.
It's the actual start up which is the problem, not the login process.
I can live with the slow start up for now, but my main problem is when iTunes and Xtorrent freezes and starts acting like a ghost. Any ideas there? It just happened with Xtorrent again now. It's shut down, but the dock indicates that it's still running...

  • Constant freezes, now cannot install 10.4 without problems

Well, my computer recently started having problems. Constant freezes, the grey screen that comes up and tells me to restart. Application crashes. I could not figure out what the problem was, the only think I have done to the machine recently is add the superdrive from another G4 and put it in mine, that would not cause a problem, would it? Luckly I have a backup drive, so I have not lost everything.
So I thought I would reinstall 10.4, which seemed ok, what the system was install, I tried to do all the updates, but the system update failed, and it could not install the OS X updates. So, I restarted and got a kernal error, and could no longer boot into my new fresh system, strange. So, I tried again, did a complete reinstall, and tried to do a manual upgrade of OS X. I got the dmg file from apple's site, and tried again, at the end of the install, it told me to try again, that there was an error. Restart again, no kernal error, but all I got was the grey apple screen, with the spinning indicator, and it never booted. So I am stumped. What could be causing this on a new install? I am thinking maybe it could be the hard drive. My backup drive that I boot off of is working fine, so I don't think it is any other hardware. Any ideas why a fresh install would start off this way, and continue to cause problems?

Yes, bad RAM can cause all sorts of issues. Replace it and see how it goes. Most good suppliers have lifetime warranties these days. If you can't get it replaced, try a Mac friendly brand such as Crucial. I have had trouble free operation with mine.
    Cheers!
