ITunes Slowdown

I updated iTunes to 11.0.4 using the automatic update feature of the App Store.  (I have a MacPro 3.2 GHz quad core running OSX 10.8.4, kept updated.)  After doing this, iTunes constantly maxed out my CPU (well, at least one core...), and became very slow to respond.  As an example, under normal circumstances, if I move my mouse over the MiniPlayer window, it would immediately change from showing the name of the current song to the control buttons; after the update, it would take between two and three minutes to do so.  iTunes slowed down the rest of the computer as well (since it was a resource hog).
I couldn't find any help online; no one else seemed to be having this problem (but this is aimed at those who do!), so I tried what Tech Support usually suggests as the first fix.  I downloaded the iTunes installer from itunes.apple.com and reinstalled the program.  Believe it or not, that completely fixed the problem.  Now iTunes is working the way it's supposed to.
I hope that, if anyone else has the same problem, they have as much luck with this solution as I did.

512 MB RAM is sufficient to run OS X; while 1 GB would be ideal, the difference between 512 MB and 1 GB, while noticable, would be less than the difference between 256 Mb and 512 MB. I would keep the number of concurrently open applications to a minimum, through.
Repeatedly shutting a Mac down via he power button carries a known isk of damaging the hard drive disk directory. If a hard drive window in the Finder shows 110+ GB free space yet you're getting the warning about running out of space on the boot drive, that supports the suspicion that the directory is damaged. That could account for the kernel panics aslso. Did your mention of I did a Utility check include starting up from the OS X Install disk to run Disk Utility> Repair Disk from the Installer menu, as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck? If any repairs are reported, repeat Repair Disk until it gets a clean bill of health or it becomes obvious that Disk Utility cannot fix the drive, in which case you can try DiskWarrior.
Once the hard drive is confirmed good, you need to resolve the kernel panics. Is iTunes up to date? Download and run Memtest and run it to check if any problems are indicated with your RAM. If your software is up to date and RAM is cleared, see if the panics continue when you Start Up in Safe Mode. What peripherals (especially USB ones) do you have attached to the Mac? try disconnecting everything except keyboard/mouse and Ethernet cable and see if that helps.
The iPod Discussions would be a better place to ask about 2-hour tracks but I suspect the iPod's battery Manager thinks it would run out of battery power before reaching the end of the track and hence refuses to play it. Search the iPod Discussions for "reset battery manager" for tips on how to recalibrate the battery Manager.

  • Itunes is very slow to load and takes forever to recognize iphone

My itunes has been running VERY slow. It takes several minutes to open, then it is unuseable for another several minutes. Here it can browse my library but my iphone doesn't show up. after this it takes five to ten minutes to recognize the iphone. it was working yesterday when I updated my iphone to 4.3.5, then suddenly this happened.
Any clues? I installed the most up to date version and it has the same symptoms and eventually says iTunes was unable to load data class information from sync services. Reconnect or try again later

I haven't pinpointed exactly which service(s) were causing the iTunes slowdown, as I haven't had time to test re-enabling all of them yet.  But so far I've just disabled the services that I know I don't need anymore and iTunes has been running like a champ =)

  • ITunes Store slow down

    Hello everyone,
For about the past week the iTunes store has been very, very slow, sometimes taking five minutes to load a search query. I have not noticed slowdown with my wireless network––that is running as fast as ever––but the iTunes slowdown continues to persist. I do not want to buy songs and risk waiting hours and hours to download.
My version of iTunes is 7.0.2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    benlen

Please pardon me if the answer is right in front of my face on the screen.
When there appears to be a widespread, lots-of-people-posting issue (like a persistent slowdown of the iTunes Store or iTunes Search capability), is there a place to look around here for some sort of official Apple response?
Even Earthlink eventually posts a response when they're having a regional or system-wide problem ... and I pretty much hate their not-in-North-America customer service/support. Unless heck freezes over and I can get the gun-chewing, Jolt Cola-drinking computer guy in New Jersey who KNOWS what I'm talking about and doesn't work from a script!
So, does Apple eventually tally up a bunch of complaints/concerns and, at some point, decide to provide an explanation? Or do we just wade through a boatload of Apple Discussions posts about essentially the same thing, hoping to accidently stumble across an answer?
Sorry if I sound cranky. It may just be that my own ignorance is decidely NOT bliss.

  • Problems with freezing, error msg, etc.

Less than one yr. old, Mac mini OS X  10.8.5  -  First problem started a few days ago when I was suddenly disconnected while viewing YouTube, (black screen with "error msg) waited awhile and was able to connect again only to have it disconnect again. This went on intermittently for a day until I called my internet provider, they rebooted my modem and everything seemed to get back to normal…. still get disconnected but not nearly as much.  Since then, I am also randomly getting the little colored pinwheel, and in iTunes "Store" I get the "rebuffering msg" box while trying to listen to songs for potential purchase etc.  Don't know if this is all related or separate issues.  I am extremely NOT tech savvy, I bought this Mac mini mostly for music (iTunes, slowdown, youtube etc.) & for general use. I have no games etc., hardly no videos or pictures.  Any help that I can understand would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • YouTube once accessed, then gradual iTunes shutdown & iPad slowdown

Seems to be a popular issue lately, so I assume apple is working on it.
    My account:
First noticeable issue was when accessing YouTube to watch a clip from the DNC, & it took forever to play. One month ago I downloaded the first GOT season to see if it was anything like the books, & the downloads kept slowing down a bit. The blue track bar during video would halt, stop downloading, or not play through once download complete. So then I decided to be patient & wait for my downloads to finish before viewing. Well, the DNC clip wouldn't even load. 30 seconds (+/-) of pay and refused after that. That was 2 days ago.
So within 2 days it kind of manifested like a bad illness. As in, no issues for the last month since overdosing on Game of Thrones downloads, then I stop by YouTube for the DNC & here's the order of frustrating failures:
Pending iTunes purchases just aren't downloading.....last night I even "watched" as it loaded 1 megabyte every 5 minutes. I can't get through to YouTube at all. Emails are crawling in. "you do not have permission to access the requested resource" pops up when I try to play a video that I bought from iTunes that was fully downloaded, an episode of top gear. I was able to watch the half downloaded episode last night, until the download started crawling, but not today. I can't even update any apps or download them either now. I tried to download the USAA app, and it just sat in waiting status for a day. Then I thought to try an update on an app that won't break my heart to lose, & thus eBay was my lab rat, & it just refused to download.
My response was to shut down & restart, I can't say how many times. Each time, varying the length of time it was shut down, up to an hour. Then I started deleting videos & apps like crazy, clearing another 10 GB of space, since I put MSCL in the cloud then I can pull it out later, like all of these iTunes purchases that I previously backed up.i even cleared out my bulk & trash folders in mail. Then I went to settings, cleared safari history & cookies if that was involved, then went to diagnostics........the iPad has sent more reports in the last 2 days than it has in the last 6 months when I bought it (3rd gen). The only diagnostics, actually (I just pulled it up to review) prior to the last were a couple of "low battery" reports. Within the last week (per the date stamp in the header) the reports have been: a long series of "awdd_2012-09-0X........" and the time stamp & the rest of its own code; about 20 app crashes headed by "Latest Crash-iBooks....." or Facebook or anything; FaceTime; "hog_2012-09-06......."; "mobile mail & date etc...."; and "log-aggregated-2012-09-06......".
Randomly the apple Id login would pop up, usually delayed after I started a download. Came up 3-4 times, I rejected the first few times but by the time I actually consented it was already really obvious that the iPad was having an issue with data moving slower than cosmic development, & it was likely to complete something I initiated. Knowingly at least.
No issues with latest version of iPod touch, but that doesn't get as much action as the iPad.
To be fair, I don't access questionable sites or open questionable emails, I'm a pretty safe consumer & not too curious about what's on the web, but it's just something I think you can't ever be too secure with. Top corporations with big deal security still get hacked, I'm not a remarkable target like that but for sure an easy victim. Either way, I don't think it was anything out of the ordinary that I did to bring this on. I really think it was when I accessed YouTube, & a lot of posts say the same thing. MY reason for writing so much specifically was because it went beyond that & even beyond the iTunes issues to the point where it's slowing everything down. Yesterday was the first time Ive ever seen a sending status bar for an email, a one sentence email. At least in the last 15 years, for sure.

Yes, I'm out of warranty period.
No, i wasn't practiced a regular shutdowns. I'm exactly like you was able to go months without restarting or shutting down my pad. Except of occasional miss of battery recharge.
No, i am usually do not restart my device if apps do not ask for it (and they usually won't).
First time at all i noticed the problem when forgot to put iPad on recharge and found it powered off.
I thought i was unable to start it because of empty battery, but then, issue repeated when i was aware that iPad still had more than half of battery charge.
Later i noticed that iPad did random shutdowns by itself. By that time the only way to power back my iPad to home screen was [home]+[power] combination.
Now it even after a fresh restore being empty factory reset, iPan fails to start to home screen starting to restore mode.

  • How to slowdown playback in iTunes?

I have an audio book in iTunes (v10.2.2), the audio book is in over 300 MP3 segments. All is fine except the person who is reading the book is talking extremely fast, the person's voice has a hint of a "Chipmunks" sound so I'm thinking the audio was sped up. Is it possible to choose a setting in iTunes that will slow down the audio, such as on an iPhone you're able to choose 1x 2x and 1/2x speeds?
    Thanks!,

Need help too, it's happening with my music in Itunes as well...does anyone know how to fix it?

  • Slowdown with iTunes

In the past I have often had a kernel panic while using iTunes, forcing me to shut off the power to my eMac. More recently, I started recording streaming radio and started getting messages saying, "your startup disk is nearly full, you need to create more space by deleting files, etc." However, of 160 Gb of disk, I have 112 Gb or more available. Also, on running Terminal, it tells me only about half my 512 Mb of RAM is in use. I did a Utility check, and also a MacJanitor cleanup. However, the spinning beachball still appears. Is all this happening because of the audio recording? My iTunes is currently using 10.48 Gb. Do I need more RAM to banish the deadly spinning beachball? One more question, when I put recorded audio on my iPod, most can be played back, but there is one that is more than 2 hours long, and it appears on the iPod screen, then won't play, the screen goes back to the main menu. However, the same recording can be played from iPod when it is plugged into the computer, through iTunes.

  • My itunes keeps pausing randomly + general MBP slowdown

Since a couple of days ago my MBP Intel (2010) has been playing around. iTunes keeps pausing songs then resuming them after a couple of seconds. Also, everything (Chrome, etc) seems to be slower. I can't exactly remember when it started, it seemed to be after I updated something (though i can't remember what). I've already verified/repaired permissions on disc manager. Any ideas?

I've been having the same problem for a few weeks now on my Intel iMac (late 2006 edition). In fact, my whole system is running ridiculously slow and keeps getting hung up (both in iTunes and pretty much every other function). I've upgraded to 2GB of RAM and I've run a disk utility repair, which has made some things run faster (finder and a few low profile programs like iCal), but my internet is still crazy slow (though fast on my iphone and my MacBook Pro), and all of my really useful programs (photo software, screenwriting software, internet on every platform I have, and iTunes) is still glacially slow.
And of course, the cursed iTunes pausing. It's so ridiculous I can't even sync my iPod. It just stalls and gives the wheel of death. I can't listen to newly dowloaded music through my computer and I can't put it on my iPod.
    Ridiculous.

  • Upgrade to 10.4 caused noticeable slowdown of iTunes import speed?

Just upgraded my Mini to 10.4 and saw an immediate negative impact on import speed in iTunes. What was average 8.0-10.0X import speed has dropped to 5.0-8.0X average. If I'm REALLLLY lucky it jumps to 9.5X. I'm not the smartest tech-type person out there, but I can recognize cause & affect. Any suggestions or ideas?

  • Itunes 7 wheel of death slowdown

i opened up itunes today ( yesterday every thing worked fine )
first my lib was corrupt so i had to import every thing again now it is running slow as dirt when i try switching songs or subjects the app hangs for about
30sec to 90sec every time no matter what i try it keeps hanging on me. any clue why!
this happens on my dual g5 since that is the one i use for music.

Yeah, I'm getting the color wheel of death as well, but only when I open certain songs. The weird thing is that it is usually around the same numbered track on each album. (ie. it doesn't ever happen with tracks 1-3, but almost always does on certain tracks. I can also listen to later tracks as well. It's just these middle tracks on albums that the color wheel seems especially attracted to. Any answers yet?

  • Since updating to iOS 6 on my ipad i am unable to connect to the internet, itunes or the app store. I have tried many suggestions about changing the dat, logging in/out of itunes etc but nothing has worked! Please help :)

Since updating my ipad to iOS 6 a few days ago i can't seem to get onto the internet, the app store or itunes, nor can i update to iOS7!! I sent an email to apple support and they said we don't handle these issues and redirected me back to the help forums which i have already seen and tried everything other people have suggested and nothing has worked (changing date, signing in/out of itunes etc). When i go to app store the screen is blank, in itunes it just keeps saying loading but never gets anywhere and same with the internet! When i go to settings to update to iOS 7.0.4 it says software update unavailable, try again later. Not sure what to do now. Nothing works, can't use my apps, facebook, music etc. Will contact apple again and try get some answers. But thanks for any info

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • IPod mounting issues with iTunes 7.0.2

My computer is having trouble mounting my iPod. Initially, I thought the problem lied with the iPod since files appeared corrupted. But the files returned and iPod diagnostics gave it a healthy status. Today, my external firewire drive did not mount; yet the attached iPod appeared in Windows Explorer. In other words, the iPod attached to the external drive appeared while the drive was MIA. Weird!
After dis/reconnect the firewire cable, the external drive appeared, but the iPod faltered. Then I dis/reconnect the iPod and it appeared.
My music is on the external hard drive, which creates a problem for iTunes when the drive disappears. Basically, the iPod and the external drive need to be visible and accessible; or iTunes eats into CPU usage and resources. It’s even causing random blue screen of deaths, which do not occur with a disconnected iPod and external drive. These scenarios were apparent after upgrading to iTunes version 7.
Update: I have deleted all temp files; stopped the iPod service; uninstalled iTunes 7.0.2; deleted the iTunes folders; ran defrag and chkdsk several times; reinstall iTunes 7.0.2; and tried multiple cables and firewire/USB ports.
With iTunes removed, Windows XP instantly recognizes the iPod and external drive with no problem. After the iTunes 7.0.2 installation, the iPod goes on the brink. The situation has me frustrated beyond belief. Right now, I cannot recommend upgrading to iTunes 7.0.2 on Windows XP.
Please advice on these scenarios before I roll back to iTunes version 6.

I finally gave up on iTunes 7. After uninstalling iTunes 7 and reinstalling iTunes 6, my iPod became more reliable and Windows XP would consistently mount it. Even though iTunes 7 is well conceived, I founded considerably slower than version 6. The slowdown becomes apparent when iTunes automatically starts with connecting an iPod. Syncing the iPod with a large music database will cause a slowdown; even a crash.
I do not believe that iTunes is multi-threading well on Windows XP. My other syncing applications do not put a strain on my computer’s resources. My computer handles Photoshop 10 megapixel processing and a 2 gigs bi-directional sync over my network without a hiccup. iTune grinds my computer to a halt with just a 2 gigs syncing to the iPod. In addition, all startup items were disabled in the troubleshooting process.
Even though features like the Summary tabs and view by album art appeal to me, I will hold off on the iTunes 7 upgrade in place of speed and reliability. I have a couple recommendations as well. These suggestions are for people with large music databases and a large number of hard drive and firewire devices.
