Itunes songs keep disappearing

At the top of the menu bar I click add folder to library and find the folder filled with my music. It loads all my music onto Itunes and than I go through it and delete all the songs I do not wish to have and rename all my songs to the right one and than I sync my Ipod to it and my Ipod receives all the right things. Than I close Itunes and reopen it and everything is gone. It's just a black screen with no music. I have done this about 3 times and can't figure out why all my songs get erased and I have to re-import them. If anyone can help that would be awesome!

I see you have a Sony Vaio. Your situation is probably due to a conflict between itunes & some pre-installed Sony software.

  • ITunes song keep disappearing from iTunes

    Hi,
A brief explanation. I decided to copy my 6000+ songs from iTunes to an external Smartdisk as a backup. I simply dragged the Itunes library folder from the iMac home icon and saw it copy to the smartdisk and entitled it Itunes Aug 07. Then I went to play my songs in iTunes and none were there at all. They were now all on the smartdisk.
I dragged the folder back to the iTunes library.
This took some time, but was unsuccessful as many songs were not imported back to the new iTunes library folder. I am continually confronted with the exclamation mark in the source window and the warning that the original file could not be found and would I like to locate it!
I tried consolidating all music from the Advanced menu, but this did not work. I still have to open the Aug 07 folder and manually drag songs to the new iTunes library folder. I can play the songs once i have dragged them over, but once the computer has been closed down, many of these recently dragged songs disappear again from itunes with the above explanation and I have to manually drag them back to iTunes.
The songs involve include those purchased from the Itunes store and songs imported from my Cd collection.
It is very infuriating as you can imagine and I just have run out of ideas.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance. George UK

    George-
It sounds like what you need to do is to set up iTunes to store your Music Library on the external drive instead of the main drive (I'm not sure what a SmartDisk is).
I haven't ever done this myself, but here's an article on how to do it.

  • IPhone 5S - 1 song keeps disappearing...

So, I have two playlists synced, and on song keeps disappearing from these playlists!?
I keep having to go back to the Store, buy it,(of course it tells me I already bought it and it asks if I want to download it again, i do), and then by the next morning it's gone again! This happens with 1 song. Everything else is still there.
    Thoughts?
    Thank you.

Did you restore from backup, or as a new device?  Restoring from backup just restores the same corrupt software back to the phone.  Restore as a new device and don't use any backup at all.

  • AARGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!  Songs Keep Disappearing!!!

I just lost another 450 songs. I have everything backed up, but every time I open i-Tunes, these little "!" marks randomly appear on songs, and those songs have disappeared. I have had to re-load over 1,000 songs lately becaue of this. I have re-installed i-Tunes several times, but this keeps happening. What's up?

You get exclamation marks or dead tracks because iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible.
A couple of things occur to me. Do you have any other software that might be reorganising your files? The other thing is you library somehow getting corrupted.
One thing you could do to investigate is to wait until it next happens. Then make a note of some of the tracks that can't be found.
Then open iTunes Music Library.xml with WordPad. Use "Find" to look for some missing tracks.
You should see lines that start <Location>. The contain the paths where iTunes thinks your files are located - the space character is represented by %20.
It could be a vaild path or even garbage - but it might help workout what is going on.
In case it is useful, here is a way to collect dead tracks in a playlist where they can be deleted.
Using a playlist to collect dead tracks.
Create new regular playlist – Playlist1
Select whole library and drag to Playlist1
Create new Smart Playlist with the rule: Playlist is not Playlist1
Live updating not checked –you may not be able to delete the dead tracks if it is checked
This playlist should contain all the dead tracks

  • ITunes library keeps disappearing with network home directories&MacBookPro

I've been using iTunes with network home directories for years. My wife & I have network home directories on our Macs and we can log into any of our Macs with our network home directories. The actual iTunes Music folder is also on the network server and shared between our user accounts.
This has always worked fine with my G4 cube, my PowerMac G5 and my PowerBook. As long as I only open iTunes on one machine at a time, I can open it on any of my machines and everything works great.
However, with my new MacBook Pro, my library keeps disappearing and I have to reimport it from the XML file every couple of days. Seems to erase my iPod Shuffle too at the same time (maybe it's triggered by plugging in my iPod).
Any ideas? Is there an endian issue with the library?
I can't figure out how to get any feedback on what's happening. Is there a debug log file I can enable?
PowerMac G5, PowerBook, MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I've got one better...I imported all my CDs onto iTunes. Then I upgraded. Here is what happened...All songs remained listed, however when I would click onto a song, a ! mark appears in front of the check mark and a window pops up saying "song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Well this occurred on 75% of my songs. Apple info led me to believe I could use my iPod as a hard drive. So I tried hooking up the pod to my computer. Well, from 3688 songs, I was down to just over 200, so I guess that is an even higher percentage.
What iTunes did was made a folder in "my music" with years 1955 to 2007. In those different years folders are the CDs that were released in that year. They have to be opened, each individual song, and re entered to itunes. All this I discovered on my own. No help from Apple. Not to mention what a royal pain in the *** process, which I am still in the process of doing. And don't even get me started with Artwork

  • Vertical Scroll in iTunes 11 Keeps Disappearing

I'm having a problem with the vertical scroll feature on the righthand side of iTunes 11. It keeps disappearing on me. If I adjust the size of the Itunes window, it'll show up, but only momentarily. Eventually it disappears. I have to re-adjust iTunes's window when I want to use it again.  Also, in the new Expanded View, if an album has more tracks than can be seen in the window at one time, I need the vertical scroll, only it's not there!  Until I re-size the window. But as soon as I click on a track, the vertical scroll disappears. I wouldn't mind it fading away when I'm not using it, but I'd like for it reappear when I need it.
Is there any way to lock the scroll bar on the right hand side?

After playing around with iTunes a little, I've figured out a solution. I didn't mention it in my previous post, but I am using iTunes 11 on a MacBook Pro.
The quickest way to temporarily bring back the vertical scroll bar on MacBook Pro:
Use the two finger scroll technique on your multi-touch track pad. Do a two-finger tap and the scroll bar will briefly reappear.
It's funny, your brain gets so used to using iTunes one way that you don't think to use the techniques you use with different programs. My solution almost seems self-evident.
The scroll bar is everpresent in the PC version iTunes 11 on a PC. I just wish this was the case for Macs. It seems like it scrolls more slowly too.

  • ITunes movies keep disappearing

I have a large collection of movies in iTunes and some keep disappearing.  I haven't looked for music and apps, but I'll redownload the movie from iCloud and I'll quite iTunes, reopen it, and the movie is gone again!  I went into the actual iTunes folder and the first thing I noticed was that there 4 or 5 .tmp files, exec files (iTunes Files is what it says in the quick preview), .itdb files, and .xml files.  The normal iTunes Music and Mobile Applications are in there along some others.  So I went into iTunes Music>Movies and all the movies that were missing were there and some duplicates that I redownloaded.  I would prefer not having to start a whole new iTunes folder and drag my content back in.  Is there a file that I can delete or alter that will fix it?  Please help.

    Hello Rpc30,
There are a couple of options I have that should remedy your situation.
The first would be to delete and re-download the items that have an exclamation mark, then redownload them from the iTunes store.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
The other option would be to search for the missing movies manually.

  • My entire iTunes library keeps disappearing from my brand new iMac. All info transferred from external hard drive. Anybody have a clue? Thanks.

My wife copied our entire iTunes library from the old imac to the new using an external hard drive. Now, every so often, the whole library, music, apps and all, just keep disappearing from the new computer. When I turn on home sharing it all shows up, because we still have the old imac working. Really weird. Can anyone give me some insight? Much appreciated.

Through home sharing I have now copied the entire library to the new iMac. My problem now is with the individual music tracks doubling themselves. I delete them all and then a few days later all the doubles are back. Random tracks at random times, but they all come back!

  • My songs keep disappearing

A large # of songs I used to enjoy regularly in Itunes show as not in my library anymore (with a big ! symbol). I go to locate the file and it is literally gone from the Itunes library, even though several subdirectories of folders dedicated to this one song (artist/album) are there.
I noticed that has happened after upgrades to newer versions of Itunes, and its often an old mp3 file (though not always). Here's the most curious thing:
When I go back to an external HD and find another copy of the file, I cannot seem to copy it (drag it) into my Itunes folder -- it says I do not have "permissions" to do this -- which is odd. I can add it directly to the library through Itunes, but this defeats the purposes of having on my laptop -- now it seems I have to keep the external HD attached at all times to play and retrieve the old songs. What has happened ?

When updating/upgrading iTunes it is best to repair permissions before and after the update. Use Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Have you searched you HD with Spotlight to see if the tunes are there?

  • Old Podcasts on iTunes 12 Keep Disappearing!

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can help me with this reoccurring issue i've been dealing with. I like to keep old podcasts, so I can occasionally go back and listen to them. I just bought a 13 inch Macbook Pro, and I transferred all my stuff including my podcasts over to the new Laptop. The first thing I did was disable the "Delete When Played" option, to make sure I didn't loose anything. After a few days, I starting noticing that one podcast in particular kept deleting everything on it's podcast list. It showed Podcasts, but they hadn't been downloaded (The ones with the little cloud with down arrow icon). To my relief I found the Podcast folder, and all the files were still there. So I deleted the Podcast from my Itunes Library and imported the podcast again. It seemed to work for a while, but after a few days the same dowloaded podcasts disappeared again. This has happened three, maybe four times over the past couple weeks, and for the life of me, I can't figure out what the problem is, and why it only seems to be effecting this one Podcast, and not the others.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Josh
BTW: Sorry my thread is under the subject "Using Iphone," and not under iTunes. I simply clicked New and then Discussion, and it put me here.

Thanks for the input! I right clicked one of the disappearing episodes, but there was no "Save Episode" on the drop down menu. There was "Remove From Saved Episodes" option.

  • ITunes Library Keeps Disappearing into my Recycle Bin

    Hi,
Wondering if anyone is having this problem recently. I recently got help from support and requested a re download of all my purchases. They were able to put them all in my account again. However, now my currenly library of 2000+ songs (copies from cd's) are gone. I found them in my recycle bin and restored them all yesterday. Then I proceeded to download the 700 downloads they posted for me again. This morning I had 1700+ songs. No I reopen my library again and I'm down to 103 songs and it's downlaoading another 60. What is going on? This all happened before I had a chance to do a backup. Why is my library disappearing? I've had this HP desktop for about 7 years and iTunes for about 5. It's never happened before. I've read some forums with Sony Viao's having this problem, but I've not seen anyone with HP. I appreciate all help I can get.
    Thanks

    B noir,
Sony people helped with the steps outlined in the document.
I'm happy to say that, for now, the itunes library is not getting dumped.
It's been a big hassle for me for several months. No one knew anything about it. Thank you very much!! Now I can finally change my workout play list!

  • My iTunes library keeps disappearing!

First time I noticed my music was missing I searched everywhere and then found the library in the trash. I made a desktop folder and copied all the music and then added it back to my library. Exactly a week later I go back to my iTunes library and everything is gone again. This time the music is not in the trash. I didn't delete the folder from my desktop so the music is still there. I need to know what to do to keep my music in iTunes. Anyone having the same issue?

My library keeps disapperaing too. I read on a previous thread how to rename a recent temp file to 'iTunes Library.itl' and label the old library corrupt to solve the issue, which it did. It has now happened for the fourth time and when I try the same solution my iTunes Library.itl file doesn't show up. I shouldn't have to be doing this and want to know why it's happening?! It's so frustrating!

  • All of my Itunes songs keeps going in and out for a split second

Every time I am using Itunes lately on my Imac the songs go in and out or pause for a split second.  I do not understand why this is happening - it happens on old songs and new songs that I have purchased.
    PLEASE HELP!!!

The linki LéonieDF gave for the rebuild workflow was for iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier.  For iPhoto 11 this is the workflow to follow:
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • ITunes Library Keeps Disappearing (database files get deleted)

    Hello Everyone,
I have seen quite a few discussions regarding this problem, but the majority of the threads are resolved as the source of the error was a program loaded on a Sony Vaio computer.  However, I have an HP, so that doesn't apply to me.
My problem is: everytime I close iTunes and reopen it, I loose my library and playlists.  I've noticed that, when this happens, two files show-up in my recycle bin: iTunes Library Extras.itdb and iTunes Library Genius.itdb.  I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (in addition to Quicktime and all of the other Apple programs).  I even ran Norton Utilities to check for registry problems and to clean-up uneeded files.  After doing all of this, I'm still having my problem.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance!
