ITunes songs when reformatting

Hey guys and gals,
what happens the songs I bought on iTunes Music Store if I have to reformat my computer? I guess I can't transfer them from my iPod Touch to my computer. I don't want to lose my 100$ worth of iTS music because of a virus or something (yeah, virus, I'm on Windows lol)

Hi ced fd,
If you haven't formated it yet, i would recommend you to backup your library before doing so. Use a portable Hard Drive or something like. If you want to use your iPod, read this:
If you have purchased songs from the iTunes Music Store, then those are pretty easy to transfer to your computer. You'll just need to follow [this instructions|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305465].
All your other songs (for example, those ripped from your CD's), you'll need to use any 3rd party program to transfer them to your iTunes library!
Some can also transfer your playlists, videos, ratings, podcast...

  • What steps to take to preserve iTunes data when reformatting computer?

I have iTunes for my iPhone and connected to an Apple TV and an AirPlay speaker. My computer, a Windows 7 machine, is getting glitchy and I want to reformat and reinstall the operating system.
I want to know what I should do to back up my Apple data before I reformat.
I don't have any itunes music purchases
    I have some podcasts
I have some paid apps on the phone
My entire mp3 collection is stored on a separate drive, just linked to iTunes
    What should I do to
Ensure that I have all of my apps and podcasts when I reinstall iTunes on my computer?
Preserve my phone backups that iTunes does?
Is there anything else I need to think about before reformatting?
    Thanks!

Do the same thing you would do with any other data you wish to preserve on the computer, back it up..
What works best for me is creating a complete image of the drive as it exists currently to an external drive.  Then once the computer has been formated and reloaded I can put the content I want and need back on the new drive from the backup.  The advantage is I know exactly where the data belongs based off that backup image.

  • ITunes songs when loaded to Sansa Clip results in an artist "Unknown"

I needed to convert some songs (none were purchased) in my iTunes library from AAC to MP3 to load to a brand new Sansa Clip. Rather then destroying the integrity of that library, I created a new library and opened it. I did an import (FILE|IMPORT) of some songs (only one artist). I selected all the songs and converted (ADVANCED|Convert) the selection to MP3. My library contained both AAC Audio files and MPEG audio files. I deleted the AAC files thus leaving the library with songs with MP3 extensions.
[Chris suggested I do the following: To save time, instead of File -> Import then import, then convert, then delete, do this...In the new library, hold Option then menu Advanced -> *Convert selection to MP3* {or whatever is in iTunes prefs - Advanced - Importing}. This will convert the songs on importing and only the new format will be in the new library.]
I connected my Sansa. I copied all the songs to the Sansa's Music folder. After I ejected the Sansa, I opened the Artist selection. My artist and songs were there and I could listen to the songs. I did notice in the Artist list a name of Unknown. It contained only the song titles without audio content. When I called SanDisk technical support I had to escalate my problem to a senior technician. He is now researching it. He is thinking it might be a bit rate. Anyone have a fix for this?

    Duh. Hit enter.
You use to not have to do that.

  • HT1727 How do I transfer iTunes songs when old computer died?

Old computer died so cannot deauthorize. So how do you move contents? Yes I do have a backup.

It should be a matter of restoring the ITunes folder from the backup of \Users\<User>\Music into your current user's music folder.
Should your restored backup not contain the complete library see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Purchasing iTunes songs when on Linux

I installed Linux on my sister's computer in order to save her from having to go fork out $300+ for MSWin. However, she's gone out and purchased an iPod Nano as well as a $20 voucher the "friendly" apple staff convinced her to buy. Now she's asking me how she gets iTunes installed on her computer so she can purchase some music. Is this possible? For example can she purchase them straight for the iTunes site?
You'll have to excuse my username but this is really annoying me. I already know there are a number of iPod players available (amarok, gtkpod, banshee) but all she needs is a way to purchase iTunes music without the need for the app and I'm finding it incredibly frustrating having to deal with these closed source products.

Sorry, but purchasing and playing material from the iTunes Store requires iTunes and QuickTime; it's not possible to purchase directly and wouldn't be helpful anyway since the copy-protection on the material requires Apple's software to decode for playback. You might be able to get iTunes working with Crossover for Linux, but I've not seen any reports of success with the current version of iTunes and there are apparently issues with connecting to an iPod.
Such restrictions are present on all download music stores carrying major-label content. The other stores use Microsoft's copy protection, so those require Windows Media Player which also doesn't exist natively for Linux.
I think she's going to have a lot fewer issues in the long run if she just forks out for a copy of Windows. XP Home Edition goes for under $200.00 (US).

  • Trouble adding iTunes songs to slide show displays

When displaying a group of photos in a slide show (view photos in full screen), I am unable to use my iTunes songs. I know how to "browse" and add the sample music from my music files (and that works fine), but it won't work w/my iTunes songs. I click on the iTunes file and it shows me the artists. I can then click on the folder and choose one of the songs. However, when I try to "Select" or "Open" the song, the title of the song disappears and it reads "No items match your search".
I am able to open and listen to my iTunes songs when I am not in PSE. I have PSE 7, and am new to PSE.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My guess is that your songs in iTunes are not in a file format that PSE can use - what format are they? And they might also have DRM (digital rights) restrictions.
I suggest that you try using iTunes to burn an mp3 file of one of the songs that you wish to use and then try that mp3 file in the PSE slide show.

  • Lost all my ipod song when i plug in my new laptop

i lost all my payed itune song when i plug in my new laptop is there anyway to get them back and how thank you

If you're in the US, you might download them again for free: Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • TS2818 I have purchased songs from iTunes and when I sync with my Ipad only some are imported....then it says contact Itunes as to why your songs are not being synced.

I have purchased many songs on Itunes and then I sync to my Ipad. Then it tells me so many songs cannot be synced.  Why? I also attach my connection and it is now saying this iphone is not connected when it is an Ipad connected to my MacBook Air.  I also think that when you have an account with Apple they should honour your email to all your music and not just your laptop as I now have to use my old laptop which is about to die so what happens then.

What is the exact wording of the error message?
Were all songs purchased by the same iTunes account?
What did iTunes say when you contacted them?

I put songs onto my IPhone 4, and they show up under the "On This Phone" section in itunes, but when I go to play the songs on my phone, they aren't there. How can I fix this?

When you look at your iPhone, are you looking in the Music app or in the iTunes app?  Be sure you are looking in the Music app, and look in the Songs category.  If your songs are not here, you may want to try syncing your information again through iTunes.  To do this, uncheck "Sync Music" and then click apply or sync in the bottom right corner of iTunes, and then recheck "Sync Music" and then click apply or sync again.
    I hope this helps!

  • I have missing songs that i purchased on my old iphone. they are not in my purchased folder. but in itunes store when i look the song up, it has the purchased logo next to it.... but no way to download it

i have missing songs that i purchased on my old iphone. they are not in my purchased folder. but in itunes store when i look the song up, it has the purchased logo next to it.... but no way to download it

If the songs are still on your ipod, make sure autosync is disabled in iTunes on your computer, connect and right click on it in the device list, then choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought media and apps from your ipod to your computer.
If the songs are not on your computer and got deleted from your ipod as well, you can't get them back, unless you have a backup of your iTunes library as part of your computer backup.

Whether you can redownload music depends upon what country that you in. If you are using your computer's iTunes then does music show in the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (on your phone you might be able to redownload media via the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app) ? If music shows there, but not that album, then check to see if it's hidden : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919
If you aren't in a country when you can redownload music and it's still on your phone then you should be able to copy it over from the phone via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If you have failed to bakup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases
