ITunes sorting tv shows
I am setting up a new iTunes library on a macmini, but iTunes isn't consolidating files as expected.
I have copied my main library folders to an external and am now in the process of setting up the new video library, but when I consolidate my files (which retain my iMac iTunes Media Library format) to the new iTunes Media folder, the TV Shows copy over all in one folder per show, bypassing the creation of and sorting into season folders. Where did all my meticulous organization go?
So, I determined that I'd start over and add these files just like I would new media to an entirely new library. Drag and Drop gets me the same result. I can drag an entire season of Dexter into the TV Shows window and be happy with the result, only to find that when I go to visit the final resting place of these files, they're mingling with episodes from previous seasons. When I add the media into iTunes from iFlicks, which rewrites the metadata—just in case that is the culprit, I still have this problem. Where have Season subfolders gone? Am I losing my mind?
How can I get iTunes to create season folders in the new directory and sort my episodes into the proper folder? I'm staring at 4 episodes of Dexter, all beginning "01," I don't know which belongs to what season, and it's driving me crazy!
As a caveat it looks like you can't be at the root level of the external drive.
I was having this same problem after having set my iTunes default to be /Volumes/[external drive]. It created the folders, but lumped them all together. Tried the above trick, and no joy.
I created a new folder and made that the default (/Volumes/[external drive]/iTunes) and then it would divide the TV shows into seasons.

ITunes purchases not showing in iTunes and not transferring to iPod shuffle
I Have been using ipod shuffles for several years as they are small and convenient for running. I have purchased 175 songs on iTunes and been forced to purchase FIVE iPod shuffle devices because the battery life in all five devices degrades after approximately 40 re-charges to the point that I only get 15 minutes battery time after a full charge. This is occurring on every iPod shuffle I have bought inclusing the latest one which is only two months old. A couple of weeks ago, I purchased several applications for my iPad and several new songs. I receive emails after each purchase. However, when I looked at my iTunes account, it showed all the items as a single item purchase and the songs were not even showing up as purchased or in my play list. This tells me that someone at Apple accounting is manually adjusting purchases and not itemizing them and the songs were not even given to me. I had to reinstall my entire iTunes program and they had to reinsert the new songs into my purchased playlist. That is why I couldn't transfer my songs onto my iPod shuffle. Now, with the latest IOS 8.3 update, I am getting all sorts of service problems like it says each time I turn on my laptop that I have inserted a CD or DVD, select the times I want to burn. It was never doing that before. It is also giving me all these warnings too:

I purchased four new iTunes songs yesterday and only one of them transferred into my iPod shuffle. ITunes Sorts Correctly, iPad Doesn't?
Short Version: In iTunes, my albums show up in proper alphabetical order when I'm using custom Sort Album tags, but in my iPad, a few of the albums show up out of order. Anyone have any ideas?
The Long Version: I listen to my music almost exclusively by genre--when I sit down to listen, I don't usually know exactly who or what album I want to hear, but I know the kind of music I'm in the mood for. Since my iPad doesn't give me any decent way to sort by genre (I know it's in the Music app, but it doesn't fit the bill for me), I went through my iTunes library and changed the "Sort Album" tag for each track to be the genre, followed by the album name. So, all the tracks from the "Superman" soundtrack have a Sort Album tag of "Film Score - Superman 1"; the tracks from "The Right Stuff" have a Sort Album tag of "Film Score - Right Stuff, The", and so on. I used a script from Doug's AppleScripts to automate the retagging (though in my troubleshooting, I've redone these by hand as well.)
And this all works just fine in iTunes--albums show up in alphabetical order by the Sort Album tag. But when I put all of these tracks on my iPad (3rd gen 64GB Wi-Fi only, just updated to 6.0.1 but the problem was present in 6.0), I find that a few albums--"The Abyss", the three "Back to the Future" scores, "Rudy", "SpaceCamp", and "WarGames"--all sort alphabetically at the end of the F's. They've all got the same tag structure ("Film Score", space-hyphen-space, album title) as the other albums tagged as "Film Score" in Sort Album. I've tried blowing out all of the tags and redoing them by hand with no luck. Changed the cover art, renamed them, everything I could think of. If I change the tag from "Film Score - Abyss" to "Falm Score - Abyss", the "Abyss" title does move to the head of the list in my iPad, but once I change it back, it drops back down to the end of the list, and to the exact same location it'd been in before. I even tried exporting one of the albums, saving all of the tracks as new files through my sound editor, then reimporting them as a "new" title; when I added the Sort Album tag, it still sorted wrong.
I've checked this in the iPad Music app, as well as my primary music player, Track 8; both show the same sorting problem. I've changed every single tag I could find on these tracks, with no luck. Again, these titles do indeed sort correctly in iTunes; "The Abyss" shows up at the top of my Film Score list, but in iPad, it's at the very bottom. Anyone have any ideas as to why iPad would sort "Film Score - Abyss" after "Film Score - Willow"?
(For the record, each time I've changed tags in an attempt to fix this, I have been making sure to remove the tracks from my iPad, then restore the new versions; I have iTunes set to only sync checked items, so when I change tags, I uncheck the tracks I've modified, sync my iPad and watch the tracks disappear from it, then recheck the tracks and resync and watch the files copy back over.)

I myself think that (for instance) "A tribe called Quest" should be sorted under "A", not "T".
Now I can edit the sort options manually per track and/or per selection, but I would really like to just kill this "iTunes-knows-how-you-should-sort"-feature in iTunes.

ThanksHere is a modified version of one of Doug's Scripts. My modification was to add Sort Name to the list of tags that could be changed. I tried it on a single track and it worked. I recommend backing up your library first. Select the tracks you want to change (or all tracks) and run the script from the Applescript Editor. If it works as intended, save it so you can apply it to newly imported tracks. And, yes, I know this isn't the exact answer to your question, you want to change a preference setting in iTunes (if there is such a setting).

Sorting TV shows by Episode number instead of alphabetically.
I have an 80GB classic. I have loaded 3 seasons of the office onto it, and each season is seperated, which is great, but inside of each season the episodes are sorted aphabetically and not in order of the episodes. After I uploaded them I went into the info section and set the season and episode number for each one. Any help would be appreciated.
I am having the same exact problem after a recent iTunes update (10.5.x). My episodes used to be sorted by episode #, but all of a sudden they were sorting by episode ID.
No problem, I went through and changed the episode ID to match episode #.
This fixed about 75% of my shows, mostly those I ripped from DVD's myself.
What is still screwed up is my iTunes store purchased shows. I have tried every sorting tab and tag combination I can think of, and they still remain firmly sorted by some unknown factor (it is NOT episode id, # or release date or alphabetically by name even).
The shows appear sorted perfectly in iTunes. It is only on my iPod classic 120GB that this is showing up. I have also tried removing and reloading the problem shows on my iPod.
I am thinking of resetting my iPod to factory then reloading my entire library, but what a pain...

i have an iphone 4 and i have upgraded to ios 5. but after upgrading all my apps disappeared and in the summary tab in itunes it jus shows as other data..! please help
When I went to reload my phone it gave the option of restoring with icloud or itunes so i chose itunes (assuming icloud would have many more bugs). Afterwards, I had no music and 6.6g of other.
What I did was go into itunes, clicked my iphone 4, and clicked on each of the top tabs (summery, info, apps, ringtones, music, etc.) and ensured I had them all clicked onto sync/selected playlist etc.As my phone restored, the 6.6g of other dropped to .99g of other.
Unfortunately, all my songs are gone but everything else seems to be in tact. I don't think there is any way around this issue for now with the new ios 5 update when syncing either an ipad or iphone. I have an ipad 2 but am going to hold off on updating it until apple gets the bugs sorted out because, I'm sure you will agree, getting the music back to where you want it to be is a total nightmare and takes ages to not only pick the right songs and artists to put on it, but also the ones that will fit correctly with the space, depending on the size you have.

iTunes will not show my purchases before October 18, when I had a different username. How do I get the older purchases (more than 5,000) listed when my password is rejected and it won't issue a new one for that username?
Wow that was really quick, thank you so much. Im not sure at all which version it was because i said it was around 4 years ago he bought it. I know it isn't under his username, since he's a PC person (ugh) so i know its probably registered to one of our actual names. isn't there some way to look it up since we did register it, because I'm not even sure where the disks are from when we bought it (we've moved a lot and also have two storage lockers, i know i would have kept it with other disks) but my cd rom drive is actually broken on my computer as well ( i think it got stepped on and is now squished and won't eject or run disks.)
So is there anyway they can look up that its registered to one of our names since we did register it when we bought and installed it, or do i really have to find the disk with some sort of proof of purchase (i know there would be no receipt after all this time)

Does the iPod follow the iTunes "sort filters" in Cover Flow?
Two quick questions:
1) Is it now generally agreed upon how Cover Flow is sorted on the iPod? (i.e. Is it by +album title+, by artist, or by +album artist+?) Can you change how it's sorted?
2) If you have used the "sorting" tab feature in iTunes when editing song info, (for example, I have "album artist=Foo Fighters" in song info, but I also have album artist Foo Fighters sorting as "A1 Foo Fighters" for various listing reasons to keep it ahead of other album artists), will the iPod know to follow these sorting decisions?
The main reason I ask, is that I am digitizing my collection of 400+ cds, 100 of which are classical, 100 are musicals, 100 are rock, and 100 are other genres. I've had a lot of fun in iTunes with the Sorting tab in the song info box, which has allowed me to really sort my albums the way I want. For a classical album, like Bach's St. Matthew Passion, I leave the actual album title "as is," but then I have the Sorting album box sort this as "Classical, Bach's St. Matthew Passion," so that when I sort by album, all my classical cds show up together, in alphabetical order by album title, then my rock cds, etc. I do the same thing for album artist...I'll insert my own prefix, like "A1" or "Classical" or "Musicals" before the album artist name to make sure the genres stay together, even when I sort by album artist.
I'd like to use the iPod's Cover Flow, so I NEED to know the way the iPod Cover Flow will sort...If it sorts by Album Artist, I'll be much more careful with how I apply Album Artist "sorting" filters to my song info in iTunes. And I need to make REALLY sure that the iPod will actually abide by the iTunes Sorting tab, because otherwise all this tagging work I'm doing is for nothing.As far as I can tall the tracks are initially sorted by the *Sort Artist* field. If this field doesn't exist it takes the value of the Artist field, with the provio that a leading "The " is ignored. Once grouped by artist the albums are sorted by the *Sort Album* field. Again, if this field doesn't exist it takes the value of the Album field with a leading "The " ignored. In iTunes artist names begining with numerals are listed first but on the iPod they are listed after those starting with A-Z and before the compilations.
When displaying the covers the iPod displays a new cover every time the album name and/or album artist changes. If you have one album by a given artist it should show once, even if there are guest artists listed in the artist field. If you have two albums however you may end up with four covers shown. This can be fixed by setting the *Sort Artist* to the main artist for each track with guests.
When the album is selected every track with the same album name is listed, most obvious if you flip over *Greatest Hits* and find 100+ tracks listed. To fix this you need to give every album a unique name. e.g. append ", Artist" to affected album titles. You can do this invisibly by making this change to the *Sort Album* field but it's worth noting this bug exists in iTunes too and it's probably better done visibly when using other views. The *Sort Album* field comes into it's own however when you want a group of albums displayed in a specific, non-alphabetical order. I have the Hitchhikers Guide radio series which I have reoganised to appear as single albums and set the fields as *Hitchhikers Guide 1*, *Hitchikers Guide 2* etc. to list them in the right order while still displaying the full album title.
Lastly the albums are displayed with the Artist field of the first track rather than the album artist. Looks odd on compilations and where the first track has a guest artist. No fix or workaround that I know of...
It took a while, but every one of my albums is listed in Cover Flow exactly once.

Sorting TV shows on the iPad air does so by season
I've been on the internet for days and I know there has been all sorts of talk on different sites about the ipad video app and how it sorts TV shows not purchased from iTunes. All the talk I see deals mainly with episodes not being sorted in order which I am not as concerned about.
My issue is that when I am in the video app, my movies and music videos show up just as I would think they would.
When I click on TV shows, I have one folder/block showing the total number of files.
When I click that, I have multiple folders showing Season X (different Season #s). When I click on a Season, all the TV shows of a particular season are in that folder. It's annoying.
I just want the name of the show to be there, go in and see all the seasons.
I've tagged all these things to show the episode name, season and number correctly. I don't know what else to do.
Is this how they show up or do I have some setting incorrect?

I know you said that the shows don't appear in iTunes on your computer - but If the shows appear on the iPad - You can delete TV shows directly from the iPad. Launch the Videos App - tap and hold down on the TV show icon and then tap the X to delete the show. Did you try to remove the shows this way?
If you want to redownload the shows at a later date, you can do so for free in the iTunes Store on the iPad - or in iTunes on your computer - if you live in the U.S.
The other thing that puzzles me is why the TV Shows did not transfer from the iPad into iTunes when you tried to manually transfer the purchases.
You don't have two different iTunes accounts in iTunes on your computer do you? Or does someone else that you live with use a different iTunes account on your PC? -

You would need to make sure you're accessing the Computers icon. If you are under the Music icon, that will be accessing the cloud and only show iTunes purchases (unless you subscribe to iTunes Match)

Please read the title; itunes match has removed my playlists on itunes and iphone and the songs that are supposedly 'matched' on itunes are not showing up on my iphone.
Any Really annoyed about thisiTunes Match does not have the ability to remove local files.
The service operates by comparing the selected iTunes Library with the iTunes Store content and 'matching' or 'uploading' - it is very straightforward a 'match' provides equivalent access to iTunes Store content as a recognised 'purchase'; upload simply copies a 256k AAC variant into the cloud. There are no elements of this activity that can erase the local library content.
Would suggest you explore possible alternative causes of file loss. Given the pattern described of selective deletion, leaving many Songs intact - would suggest making at least 2 secure offline Song file backups and starting the library again from a fresh install of iTunes once a thorough sweep of the system has been completed for virus. It is also worth assessing the physical security of the system - who has access & with what privileges.
To access Songs from the cloud, you would have to manually delete the Song from the library or open an empty library - so even when accessing content, iTunes Match provides no local deletion capability. -
Movies in my iMac's iTunes do not show up Apple TV(1st Gen)
So frustrated. Movies in my iMac's iTunes do not show up on my Apple TV(1st Gen) in the Shared Movie area. I've done the Media Type fix to "movie." I've re-started and re-booted and changed the Apple TV from ethernet to wireless and re-connected iTunes. Renamed the library. Everything's up to date. Grrr.
I have now restored Factory Settings on the Apple TV. Looked promising until iTunes hangs everytime I tried to enter the podcast page of the sync options. And I get errors that my newest movies, created in Final Cut Pro X with the Share with 720p Apple Devices export settings are not compatible with Apple TV.

I want to delete a lot of things childrens stories, albums which are not used which that are on my ipad. However when I go through Itunes it wont show me most of the stuff in my library. it takes ages to delete one at a time.
