ITunes stalls when inserting/ejecting CDs

Whenever I insert a CD to rip (just about any CD), the iTunes interface locks up (if I'm listening to music, it continues to play, but the iTunes screen becomes unresponsive). Eventually (2-3 minutes later, sometimes more, sometimes less) the window frees up and prompts me if I want to import the CD. I click yes, and the import runs normally, and everything is fine. I can play the CD, look at the tracks that were ripped, go to the iTunes Store... anything, and all's well. Then I hit the Eject button next to the CD, the CD ejects almost immediately, and then once again, iTunes freezes for several minutes. Eventually it frees up and all's well again.
Anyone have any idea what's going on? This is a somewhat recent occurance -- I've been using iTunes for a couple of years now, first on XP, then on Vista, and now on Windows 7. iTunes has pretty much behaved for the most part (with the occasional quirks, of course) but lately it's been making CD ripping a pain. Any ideas??
History:
o I have changed nothing on my PC recently except for the monthly Windows security patches (set to Auto).
o I'm running Windows 7 (32-bit), 4G of RAM, Intel Core2Duo 1.87GHz
o My OS is running off of an 80GB Intel SSD drive. My iTunes library is on a Drobo (external NAS-like hard drive). Everything else runs fine off of this storage (I have videos on there as well, and as I said earlier, music plays fine off of it)
o I have a very fast internet connection (Verizon FiOS 25 down/15 up)
o I recently updated to iTunes 10.2.1.1 (but it was exhibiting this behavior prior to the upgrade as well -- note: I always update to the latest version when Apple Software Update prompts me to).
o Everything else on my PC runs perfectly - iTunes is the only program acting funky right now

I found that launching iPhoto hangs my system for an unacceptably long period of time. The default behavior now is to launch iPhoto automatically upon docking an iPhone, so maybe this is the real source of your beachball problem? Try using the Image Capture application--part of the default OS X installation--to disable automatic launching of iPhoto on iPhone dock. To do this, change Automatic Task to "None".

  • ITunes Problem when importing Audio CDs

Since I updated my macbook pro a fortnight ago, I have been having trouble importing audio cds into iTunes.
When I insert an audio cd into my superdrive, iTunes opens as normal. I receive a pop-up message that asks if I want to import the contents of the audio cd. I click "Yes" and the audio cd icon immediately disappears from the iTunes devices list.
I then have to eject the audio cd, re-insert into the superdrive, and I receive the same message in iTunes again. I am able to successfully import the cd the next time.
When initially importing the cd, if I select "No" when asked if I want to import the cd, I can then select all of the tracks in the Audio cd device list and then I can select "create mp3 version".
I tried the same procedure on my wife's macbook pro, and iTunes simply freezes and won't proceed. We both updated our macbook pros about the same time.
If anyone can please offer any insight into this problem, please let me know. I would be most grateful for anyone's help with this issue.
    Respectfully,
    PugetSounder

No insight I'm afraid, but I have exactly the same problem as the first one you describe. I don't think it happens every time, but most times the first insertion of the CD is as you describe - iTunes asks if I want to import, I click "Yes", and the CD disappears from the left hand column in the iTunes display. When I eject and re-insert, it always works. This must be a bug in iTunes. Can anyone explain it? This is on a MacBook using the latest software - but I don't think there has been an update in the last month (maybe I just forgot).

  • Finder and iTunes stall when attempting to access ext. firewire HD

Since I upgraded to 10.4.10, the Finder, iTunes, and other apps that are attempting to access files on the external hard drive completely beachball/stall when waking the hard drive from sleep. Additionally, the dock and menu bar bork.
The only fix is to unplug the hard drive (without properly ejecting it!), and instantly, all the apps become responsive.
Anyone have information on this. My external hard drive, which contains my iTunes music and other files, has become virtually useless.

Same thing is happening to me.. Both at home on my Powerbook G4 and work on my G5.
Was working perfectly. Both systems running 10.4.10.
    Lacie 80gig FW400 drive.
Thinking it was the drive failing I promptly cloned it.
DiskWarrior and Disk Utility show no signs of error. I've reformatted, Zeroed all data many times. The drive 'appears' to be fine. I have copied my music back on to the drive; but it Hangs finder.
I've tried to re-import the music through iTunes to the drive. Again, gets about halfway and hangs finder.
Occasionally Disk Utility will return : "error could not unmount disk" when checking it out with Repair/Verify Sometimes it's fine.

  • ITunes Crashes when I eject iPod

I have a problem with my iPod Classic. My iPhone 4 and iPad 2 are both fine when I eject them. It's just my iPod Classic. When I eject it iTunes crashes and in Finder my iPod is all greyed out. I have to remove my iPod from my dock, then I have to Force Quit iTunes and then relaunch Finder to get everything back to Normal.
I have tried to restore my iPod. It downloaded the software and then it seems to be thinking about restoring it, then 10 minutes later nothing's happened and iTunes has stopped responding so I have to Force quit it again!
I've seen a post about an iPod nano having the same problems on Snow Leopard, as I seem to have started to have these problems since I upgraded to OSX Lion and updated iTunes to the latest software.
If anyone can shed some light on this it would be great.

In the end I rebuilt my Mac, backed everything up using Time Machine and then reinstalled Lion. I was having so many problems with iTunes and Lion. It was the only thing left to do.
I've had no problems since. One thing I'll add is that I had Dick Useage enable on my iPod Classic. I unchecked this also. Still no issue with iTunes or Finder when I've been ejecting it.

  • ITunes crashes when importing some CDs

I am running iTunes 6.0.3 on 10.4.4. This latest version of iTunes has improved my ability to import audio CDs, but I still often see crashes of iTunes when importing into MP3 at 160 kbps (I'd imported long ago at 128kbps).
I have tried all the things recommended in other threads: removing the CD Info.cidb file, removing the com.apple.kernelcaches folder and Extensions.kextcache file. I see similar problems when running iTunes as another user, and have repaired the disk using Disk Utility when booted from my Tiger Install DVD.
As a test, I've tried importing from a particularly obstreperous CD as AAC, and it imports fine. Other MP3 bitrates also crash iTunes.
Given that importing as AAC works, but MP3 doesn't, are there any suggestions on perhaps reinstalling whatever portions of the OS that handle MP3 encoding? I have installed LAME, but the library paths in the crash logs only point to real system libraries. I did an Archive and Install when I updated to Tiger (and that was after installing LAME).

  • ITunes stalls when finding files-won't add to Library...

This started with trying to delete several duplicate files.  The cure turned out to be far worse than the disease.
So tonight I moved all copies of all my music to another hard drive.  Then I took a backup from a few weeks and (with Carbon Copy Cloner) ONLY backed up my iTunes music folders, hoping to start fresh.
When I open iTunes, I get that import, download or find music files screen.  If I go to add to Library nothing happens.  I select the link to search for files, and it works for anywhere from 3-20 minutes.  It gets to a point where it says "processing download.m4v" and then it stalls.  I waited over an hour once.  All you can do is force quit at that point.
The weirder thing is I have even gone into terminal to display hidden files and there is no file with that name anywhere on my computer.
I do have what is on my iPhone and I have it set so it won't sync.  My understanding is sync will replace my iphone with my iTunes library (which is nothing).
I thought there used to be a way to have the iPhone override the computer, or truly sync in that whatever is on one will be copied to the other.  But this is how I lost everything yesterday.
Even if i were to throw money at this problem right now, I have no idea how to get iTunes to import anything at this point.  I have gone in and deleted the preferences, and i have zapped the pRAM.
Any suggestions or reference much appreciated.

I've been having the same problem on my wife's Windows XP machine and after some experimentation determined that iTunes does not like the fact that there is a space in name of the "TV Shows" folder. Since iTunes wants to put TV Shows in this folder you can't change the name but I did find a pretty simple work around. From Windows Explorer I mapped a network drive directly to the "TV Shows" folder, so instead of selecting "...\iTunes Music\TV Shows" (or some level above that) as the folder when doing a File, Add Folder to Library..., I selected n:\ (the network drive I mapped) and it worked great.
I don't understand what the issue is with the space, especially since music stored on a network drive does have this problem, but this did the trick.

  • ITunes freezes when inserting CD

  • ITunes stalls when I am playing music and downloading a song

I have been having this problem for a while now. I play as a novice DJ so this issues has been very frustrating when I have special request. I am playing music and everyone is having a good time, someone request a song that i dont have so i go to the iTunes store and purchase it, this is where the problem happens. The music that is currently playing stalls, messing up people's groove on the dance floor. I have tried everything from closing running processes to upgrading my internet and nothing has worked. I hope someone has any advice.

Just did. Is this known to resolve the issue?

  • Lost Previous Itunes Music when I imported CDs

I just cleaned out and organized my itunes which I store on an external harddrive.  I imported a few cds this morning (without the harddrive plugged in) and now I only have the cd's in my intunes.  How do I get back the 2,000+ other songs...
Also, I moved all the CD imports into the Itunes on my external and I even clicked on a previous Itunes song and it sends it into Itunes like It's the first time It's being added! Argh.  I really don't want to have to resubmit all the metadata I fixed/added to those songs.
If anyone can understand my confusing request and help me I would greatly appreciate it!  Thanks

    Hello pippenmcgee,
when you imported the CD this morning without the external drive plugged in, iTunes probably created a brandnew iTunes Library.
So what you need to do is to reconnect your external drive and
If iTunes is open, quit it.
Hold down the Option key while you open iTunes.
In the window that appears, click "Choose Library" and select your old library.
Then import your CD again and delete the library you accidentally created this morning. It will probably be located in your Music Folder.

  • ITunes stalls when trying to update my photos - can it be fixed?

From what I've seen of 7.0, there are a lot of problems, and I've searched these posts but haven't found anything on my specific problem.
Basically, when I try to update my iPod and I have the "sync photos from folder" checked, iTunes never finished updating the iPod. It simply says "Updating iPod", but never shows a status bar, and sits like this for a long time. My iPod says "do not disconnect"
Is there any solution, besides returning to 6.0?
Update: I've gotten it to work, now, by checking the "enable disk use", then it updates, then it sets enable disk use to unchecked... I'm still confused. And the "Update iPod" button never is activated. I have to unplug it every time...
I thought even though I've found a semi-fix, I might as well post so this hopefully will be fixed next time. Has anyone else had the same problem?
    Thanks for any help,

  • ITunes stalls when syncing calendars to iPhone

My iPhone works wonderfully, except for one very big problem:
I plug my iPhone into my MacBook's USB port... I start iTunes, then click the checkbox next to the "Sync iCal Calendars" option. I choose "All Calendars," and then press "Apply."
The sync process begins, and then when it gets to "Syncing calendars...." it just sits there. I can let it sit for hours, and it will not move past this point.
Any one else have this problem? Is there a fix?

Every time it crashes, it adds to 'other' which is why I had to restore it to begin with.

  • Itunes Freezing when inserting a CD

Everytime i insert a CD into my disk drive, itunes freezes. Even if i kill the process under task manager, itunes closes but i am unable to re-open. The only way i can fix it is to reboot (logoff doest work either).

Browsing these discussions will probably give you some hints.
More Powerbook and iBook users have the same problem.
Many of them could solve it by letting the CD 'spin down' (could take a minute or 2) and then running iTunes.

  • Screen animation sequence when inserting CD/DVD ?

    Hi,
I can't remember where (and even if) I saw that before...
When inserting/ejecting a disc a graphic of a CD in original size would appear on screen. Might that just been a demo effect or does this really work. Can't seem to find anything to do this on my new iMac.
    Thanks !

The only image I know of is associated with ejecting a disk. For a couple of seconds a large semitransparent Eject symbol appears onscreen.

I was loading some CDs into my iTunes library when the disk drive refused to "suck in" the next CD.  Does anyone have a suggest on how I might proceed?

Yes, that is a Catch 22.  If you have another Mac you can connect your Mac to it in the Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire, and use Disk Utility on the second Mac to try to run the Hardware Test from there.  Not sure if it's possible to a connected Mac though.
You can try this several times in the Terminal app and then see if a disk can be fully inserted:
Enter the following command followed by the Enter or Return key:
    drutil eject
Do it several times and then try another disk.  (A long shot).

  • HT1567 Itunes 10.6.1.7 is not recognising an Audio CD when inserted in the drive. This means I connot import any CD's. What could be wrong?

iTunes 10.6.1.7 is not recognising an audio CD when inserted in the drive. This means that I cannot import CD's. It used to work but since installing other software iTunes does not see the audio CD and will not open the drive when "eject disc" is selected from the controls menu.

Check the drive letter of your CD drive.  iTunes doesn't seem to work properly with CD drives if they are mapped to the letters A or B.  Use Disk Management tool in windows to change to a different letter and this will fix it (if this is the cause!).
