Itunes starts itself

itunes starts all by itself playing music unbidden!

There is too much of this for it to be something any individual does. It has to be a fault with iTunes. I upgraded to Yosemite thinking that might fix it, but uh-uh. I call my blank playlist "Stupid iTunes Try And Play This".  This is not a fix though, because iTunes will still start up on its own. I also have tried everything anyone has suggested in these discussions, and none of them really seem to work. Thought it might be when a site is auto refreshing itself like a golf leaderboard. "Oh, let's play a tune while you are waiting for the latest scores." Also thought the TV remote might be activating it, so I disabled the infrared remote receiver. http://www.iclarified.com/37869/how-to-disable-your-macs-remote-control-infrared -receiver Doesn't explain why it is doing it in the middle of the night, though. If I shut iTunes down before I go to bed, when I wake up in the morning it is active again. At least the blank list maintains the silence. Safari is trying to even the score though. If I leave it open, when I check in the morning it has shut down on its own.

  • ITunes starting itself.

Every time I shut iTunes down, it restarts itself. Unless I restart my computer, it continues to do this. Why is it doing this, and how do I get it to stop?

I would suspect Foxytunes. Although I haven't seen this particular issue with it other issues have come up in relation to iTunes.
I haven't tried the application myself, I wonder if there is anything in the configuration that might help. Otherwise you could try uninstalling it temporarily to see if that stops the problem.

  • ITunes 10.5 starts itself every few minutes for some unknown reason

iTunes 10.5 installed on a Vista system to perform the iPhone 5.0 iOS upgrade.  Now iTunes starts itself every few minutes for some unknown reason.  Exiting iTunes will close it (and, of course, remove it from the Task manager list of running applications), but in a while it will restart all over again.
    Thoughts?

  • Suddenly iTunes keeps starting itself

Just today I am having to deal with not being able to shut itunes down. It shuts down but a couple of minutes later it just starts itself back up.

Check Dashboard to see if you have any iTunes-related widgets running. If so, close them and see if that makes a difference.

  • Itunes launches itself and starts playing even when my laptop is closed, but I can still hear it. I can't figure out how to keep it from doing it

itunes launches itself and starts playing even when my laptop is closed, but I can still hear it. I can't figure out how to keep it from doing that.

  • My entire iTunes music library is missing. It's like iTunes reset itself and started over. How can I get my music back?

How can I get my music library back? When I launch iTunes there's no music. It's like iTunes started over completely and I can't find any of my music anywhere.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
In the unlikely event that all the media has been inexplicably and permanently removed from your computer, see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • ITunes starts by itself and won't quit

I have researched this topic and not found an answer. My system is an imac running 10.5.6 and itunes8.
recently itunes launched for no apparent reason. we haven't used it in months. when i quit, even force quit, it immediately relaunches.
we have not installed any itunes related widgets.
on restart, itunes launched itself approximately an hour later, and will not quit.
i saw issues with a process called "genredetection" but that is not running per Activity Monitor.
Anyone else have this issue or know the cause?
    Thanks!

  • ITunes started by itself.. Started playing "Thriller" video ***

Is it possible for someone to have gained wireless access to my macbook? My macbook was sitting on the table with only me in the house.. next thing I know the Thriller video in my itunes starts playing. I'm home alone and was no where near the computer. I didn't even have itunes open. I know this sounds like a joke but I'm really serious. I don't believe in ghost or anything like that but I'm kind of worried about  security now. Any ideas??

I'm having the same problem.  It started a couple of hours ago.  I turned off the infrared receiver thinking it could be a neighbor with a new apple tv or something, but a few minutes later itunes boots up and starts playing some random music again.  I checked ical just in case, but I know i've never set up an event using itunes music as an alarm.
In fact, as I type this, after i've turned off all Sharing (including printer, screen sharing, file sharing, all of them), turned off bluetooth, itunes just booted up again and played some random music.  All I have left to turn off is wifi which i will do once I hit send to this post.  It's very annoying and i also worry about security issues.

  • ITunes starts but doesn't open

After upgrade to iTunes v7.7, whenever I start the program I see the library-loading progress bar, but then the iTunes window itself doesn't open; however, according to the Windows Task Manager, itunes.exe is nevertheless running. No error message of any kind is displayed at any point.
How can I get the blessed thing to show itself?

Although this is sounding a bit like a library file issue, other problems can cause similar symptoms. The following document provides a good structure for sifting through the alternatives:

The new iTunes 12 does not have a rent tab. I've downloaded two movies which appear in the Movies folder on my Windows Explorer but not in the actual iTunes programme itself. Completely frustrating! Where can I find these two movies to watch? It asked me once it was downloaded if I wanted to watch it but I wasn't ready to and now can't find where to play these again.

When iTunes/iPod sync process failed due to timeout, the iPod, has only the initilaised  filesytem structure at the start of the Sync.
The timeout failure could be due to
Bad hardisk - do the iPod disk diagnostic, refer to this excellent post by tt2
Slow USB port or resource - Dont use any USB hub, disconnect all other USB devices while syncing
Timeout due to Antivirus or other plugins - disconnect from Internet and stop the Antivirus or monitoribng software if you are syncing.
Preferably stop doing other things while syncing this ancient device, which the latest iTunes designer, think will soon be extinct.
    Have a nice day!

  • ITunes starts automatically all the time

I have a new Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium running iTunes version 8.0.2.20. My problem is that iTunes starts up by itself constantly. I have turned it off in msconfig, unchecked it on all my iPods, but it still opens anytime I put in a cd or dvd or connect an external hard drive. Can anyone help? It's getting VERY annoying.

i think you will lose your settings but you will lose your music (unless you know all of it is located in *another folder on your computer* (i.e my music)).
I think, if all your music is saved in a folder (that is created when itunes is installed) it might delete the folder ( *and all your music* ) if you uninstall itunes. ( *but double check this* (im sure someone will confirm)). Oh and you will almost certainly lose your settings, but again it depends where itunes saves them, and if they are automatically deleted when you uninstall itunes (From Apple's point of view if you want to uninstall itunes whats the use for kepping the settings ,if you don't have the program)
Are most of the CD's and DVD's Blank when you put them in? Or are they CDs or DVDs you havn't installed yet on itunes?

  • ITunes restarting itself

Has anyone else experienced problems with iTunes restarting itself everytime I exit the program.  Don't remember when it started.  Running Windows 7 and iTunes 10.1.4.10, but it has been happening for several versions.

I have had this happening on my Windows desktop and laptop also since version 8.x and it still continues on 10.x.
I have no external speakers and no widgets plugged in.
I found one archive thread here that suggests it's a genre-detection thread running in iTunes, but AFAICT you can't turn that off in the Windows version of iTunes.

  • ITunes starting, unprompted

Re:  iTunes starting automatically--I'm using earbuds from my Blackberry Torch, and found that if I have the earbuds switch in the "on" position, then iTunes keeps opening.  If I switch it off, then iTunes stays off.  I don't have any external devices synced, and in iTunes, I have the automatic sync option in the preferences turned off, so I think it is the headphones port with the ear buds that is causing the problem.   (For those who have not yet resolved the problem of iTunes starting, consider whether this could be your problem.)

    Thank you!
My Mac Mini runs iTunes all the time, so the Apple TV's in the LAN can play music stored on the Mini.  Normally, I don't play music directly from iTunes on the Mini, but many times I have logged in to the Mini only to find music playing when it should not be.  I pause the music, and then sometime later it starts playing again on the Mini, seemingly all by itself.  This has been going on for some time, and a real puzzle.  I've tried various remedies, including making an empty playlist and opening it on the Mini in iTunes.  Nothing I tried had worked, so I just turned the iTunes volume completely down, and lived with this "ghost in the machine."
It so happens my Mini lives in a media closet where one of the ATV's also lives (on the same shelf).  My devices in the media closet are controlled via infrared transmitters inside the closet which, in turn, are controlled by RF via the Logitech Harmony 900 in another room.
It never occurred to me that the infrared signals sent to the ATV were also being picked up by the IR receiver in the Mac Mini (which I never realized existed and was turned on by default).  I disabled the IR receiver on the Mini, and hallelujah!  No more iTunes music mysteriously playing on the Mini itself inside the media closet!

  • Itunes reset itself- authorized songs now unauth and says 5 of 5. why?

i bought music from itunes store w/ a gift card from xmas. my power cord got accidentally unplugged and my laptop died. when i rebooted, my itunes had reset. i had to reimport the whole library, and now songs that were once authorized on my machine are now coming up that all 5 of 5 are authorized- even tho this machine is one of the 5!
somehow, in the mix, the first album i bought seems to have dissapeared (i have over 150 gigs of music, not sure what happened. just recently noticed it was gone). When i go to 'purchased music' it only remembers what i've bought since i had itunes crap itself and reset.
    what gives?
itunes music purchasing really *** sometimes.

When you reach the limit of 5 authorisations you have the option once a year to deauthorise them all in one go and start over:
About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93014
You can delete your "Purchased" playlist and create a new Smart Playlist and set as rule:
    Kind - contains - protected
This playlist then will contain all your purchases and always will be up-to-date.
When you make a new purchase, your 'Purchased' playlist appears again, you can then add your previous purchased music to it.
Although the 'Purchased' playlist is a special one, it behaves like a normal playlist and you can in fact add and remove anything.

  • ITunes starting up and connecting to iStore on its own...?

As subject describes, iTunes is starting up on its own.
I was offline just now and got the message 'iTunes cannot connect to iStore..'. I wasn't even using the computer at the time.
I have no auto updates enabled, or anything else that might require iTunes to start itself and get online automatically. Ping is set to OFF on my iTunes account.
Can anyone advise what is going on here please??
    cheers,
