ITunes starts to update the iPod then locks up

I have a 15GB iPod which was suffering with the chkdsk error, i updated the iTunes software, the iPod software and eventually restored the iPod to its factory settings. When connected I can see the iPod in my computer, in the device manager and in iTunes. Yet when I try and update any songs from iTunes it starts then locks the computer.
Sometimes an error message about the drive being open and a disk needs inserting will appear but eveything has locked up by this stage.
I cannot understand why all the drives and messages in device manager look okay but as soon as i try and use them they lock up.
I have tried changing the drive letter for the iPod to no avail.
Any ideas anybody

Hi there David,
You might like to refer to some of the latter more advanced troubleshooting steps in my Chkdsk Compendium:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=361771
in particular - you say you've already tried changing the drive letter - how about modifying the hardware policies perhaps - details close to the end of my thread.
Do let us know how you get on...
Kind regards,
Gopha.

My ipod and itunes both are skipping to another song about in the middle of the song. It doesn't happen on all songs...only some songs. I have reset the ipod, I have done a restore, I have reloaded itunes, I have updated the ipod but still am unable to figure out why. It did not used to do this. I can't figure out any pattern to the songs it does it on versus that it doesn't do it on. Some of the songs are purchased, some are imported, etc. We are running Windows 7.

  • When attempting to install ios5 iTunes starts to backup the iPod but the back doesn't finish and the progress bar keeps moving left to right, any ideas why please?

When attempting to install ios5 on my iPod touch , iTunes starts to backup but doesn't get anywhere and the progress bar just keeps going from left to right, any ideas please as to what I can do? Thanks

Try resetting the iPod while it is connected to your computer.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Then try again.
If that didn't help, try restarting the AMDS > iPod touch: How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows

What iPhone do you have? You can check in settings>>general>> about.
If you have a 3G you cannot update beyond iOS 4.2.1. The 3G is over 4 years old an was discontinued over 2 1/2 years ago. You need the latest ios to run the latest versions of some apps. If you have a 3GS you can update.
If your phone is not responding, reset it by pressing and holding down both the home button ad lock/ sleep button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.

If You Are Locked Out Or Have Forgotten Your Passcode or Just Need to Restore Your Device
      1. iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
      2. iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
      3. iOS- Understanding passcodes
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
backup to restore, then restore as New.
If you are restoring to fix a forgotten Restrictions Code or as a New device, then skip Step 9 and restore as New.

  • ITunes won't update the songs on my iPod

I have a 20G iPod, purchased in Nov. 2004. For the last several months, the iTunes software has been slow to recognize the iPod and start automatically updating songs (it often took several minutes), but until recently it eventually recognized the iPod and went ahead with the update. Around October, the iPod started to freeze frequently when connected to iTunes, but I was able to solve the problem by resetting it. After resetting, the songs on the iPod would update successfully.
But when I tried to update the iPod after letting it sit unused from mid-December to mid-January, the real trouble started. I tried to do an automatic update and the iPod froze. I reset it and tried again, but the same thing happened. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and updated the iPod software, but the problem didn't go away. So, I restored the iPod.
At first, this seemed to make things worse. The iPod wasn't recognized by Windows. I solved this problem, but I don't remember exactly how...I managed to get Windows to recognize the iPod somehow, then had to follow the instructions in the Apple website's article entitled "iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes" in order to get iTunes to recognize the iPod.
I thought this had solved the problem -- the iPod connected to iTunes and appeared to be updating normally. But when it said that it was finished updating, only a couple of Podcasts had been transferred to the iPod. None of my songs were there, and most of of the Podcasts weren't either. I tried updating again and noticed that although it said it was updating, the songs just went from being qued (with the little grey round waiting-to-be-transferred symbol to the left of the song title) straight to supposedly being on the iPod. None of the songs ever had the little orange round in-the-process-of-transferring symbol next to them.
I tried clearing all of the songs in iTunes and then adding them into the library again, but that didn't do anything. I don't know what else to try. I'm very, very frustrated at this point. Does anyone else have some experience with a problem like this?

Thank you both for the suggestions.
I plugged the iPod into my computer this afternoon and opened iTunes. iTunes gave me an error that I haven’t seen before – it said “iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod “Kathleen’s”. Use the iPod software updater application to restore the iPod to factory settings.” I ignored the advice, closed iTunes, and tried the fix suggested in the page linked to by b noir (that is, reassigning the drive letter). I then opened iTunes again, and I got the same message. I then tried resetting the iPod, which was saying “Do Not Disconnect” continuously, unplugging it, and restarting the computer.
When the computer started up again, I plugged in the iPod, then opened iTunes. I then let it sit there and “think” for a few minutes. The iPod said “Do Not Disconnect”, and after a while iTunes came up with an error message. The window was called “Device Timeout”, and it said “The requested operation on \Device\Harddisk1\DR3 was not completed before the time-out period expired.” Cancel, try again, and continue were my options. I chose cancel. Then iTunes gave me the “iTunes cannot read the contents...restore the iPod” message again. So, I restored the iPod, figuring the combination of reassigning the drive letter and restoring the unit might do the trick. After restoration, iTunes recognized the iPod again (that is, it didn’t give me an error message), and started pretending to update the songs on it, but none of the songs actually went onto the unit (i.e., I had the same problem as before).
I’m not sure how to try Mary Beth’s suggested fix, as I haven’t got any playlists except the ones automatically generated by iTunes (90s music, Top 25 played, etc). Is there anything else I can try?

  • ITunes 7 for Windows: iTunes could not contact the iPod software update...

Please help: Cannot update iPod though it says one is available.
I receive the following alert message:
iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the Internet. Make sure your Internet connection is active and try again.
I am connected and am even able to purchase songs on through iTunes.

    * iTunes 7 or later for Windows

    Solution
    1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
    2. Open the Internet Options control panel.
    3. Click the Connections tab.
    4. Click the LAN Settings button.
    5. Select the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
    6. Click OK in both windows.
    7. Reopen iTunes and connect your iPod.
    8. Update or Restore your iPod.
THIS DOESN'T WORK. Any other ideas as to what I can do to solve this? Thank you for any & all help in this matter.

I had a similar problem and your link helped me to solve the problem. Recently I changed my ethernet network card and since then my itunes worked strangely: itunes store worked, podcasts worked, mini-store doesn't, ipod update doesn't and diagnostics says that I had no Internet connection. Attached you can see the report.
It's weired that itunes is based in LAN Connections for sometinhgs and not for the others. Crazy!
Thanks and good luck with your problem.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. • Itunes does not recognise the ipod after update to itunes 8.2.0.23

Hi, Now find, after putting new songs in my play list, that when I plug in ipod to update songs on ipod itunes does not recognise the ipod.
The version of iTunes I updated to was 8.2.0.23 - everything worked fine until then. I see there is a newer version 8.2.1 now available - do you think by installing this the "unable to recognise" problem would be fixed???
    Thanks for your thoughts!

I have a similar problem with the iPhone. Tried everything you can think of and then some. There is apparently some devastating bug 7.6 introduced into normal USB device recognition. I've been able to force the phone into recovery mode; the boot recovery USB driver does still work. Restoring the phone every time I need to sync is both scary and time-consuming.
