ITunes stole the rights to my music

When I ripped all of my cd collection to my computer, I did it through iTunes simply because it's faster and easier than WMP.
Unfortunately, iTunes ripped all of my music as m4a AAC files.
I wouldn't mind this because it's one of the best audio codecs around, but...
I cannot load these files onto Windows Media Player. Which means I cannot use the Media Server feature to wirelessly transfer audio files to my Playstation 3.
The music I purchased is now limited in its uses because of iTunes.
Is there any way to circumvent this?

You can add the proper codec to WMP to get it to read & play AAC files.

  • HT1711 Is buying the song on iTunes buying the rights to use the song in a video

Is buying a song on iTunes buying the rights to use it in a video

No, absolutely not. You are buying only the rights for personal use only. If you want to use a track in a video, you need to 1) get the track from a CD since the iTunes Store disallows any sort of commercial use and 2) obtain a license from the content owner to use the track in a video. There are usually clearing houses for that purpose that handle licensing for the major record labels.

  • ITunes misestimates the size of my music collection, frustration ensues

So when I look at iTunes it believes that I have 295gbs of music. However, when I click properties on my music folder, which is where ALL my music is kept, it says I have 130Gb of music, and I'm pretty certain that this is the accurate estimate. Anyways the problem comes when I cannot fill up my 80gb ipod to its capacity because iTunes, and the iPod too I think, thinks every song I have is twice the size it normally is. Right now I can only fit about 14,000 songs on an 80gb ipod. Help me.

Select Music in iTunes (top left), select Songs (top right)
then at the bottom status bar will show how many you songs you have and how long it will play (in days if it a big collections) and the size (in GB) taken.

  • How to make iTunes detect the new location of music files?

Hi everyone. I moved all of my music to a different location on my hard drive, and I changed the location in iTunes preferences, but it doesn't seem to detect this, so my library is empty now. I saved an itl, xml, and temp file as well, but I don't know what to do from here.
I also tried dragging the new music folder onto the "Library" entry in iTunes, and this added everything, but I no longer have my ratings, playlists or anything like that.
Is there some other way to have iTunes detect the new location? And can I get back my ratings and playlists?
    Thanks.

iTunes doesn't use file names to determine how music appears in your library,  Rather, it uses metadata that is split between:
data elements that are embedded within the media files
data elements that are included in the entries in the iTunes database
No amount of reorganization, renaming or other manipulation at the file level will make any difference to how songs will appear in iTunes.  Using your example:
the value of the track number element is 1
the value of the artist element is "Elvis Presley"
the value of the song name element is "Blue Suede Shoes"
Depending on how you configure iTunes then the file name is either:
completely independent of iTunes (i.,e., the file containing this song could be xyz.mp3)
dependent on the metadata managed by iTunes, (i.e., when you have these two options set:
then iTunes will set the file name to be 1-01 Blue Suede Shoes.mp3 where:
the file is in a folder called "Elvis Presley" (the name of the album)
that folder is in one called "Elvis Presley" (the name of the artist) which is in iTunes Media\Music
Going back to your question "How to make iTunes read the song's name/singer from the file's name" the answer is simple - you can't, as this is not how iTunes works.  There are some third-party utilities that you can use to set some metadata element values based on parsing of file names which might be a useful first step.  However, to use iTunes effectively you should really forget about / ignore file names - manage your media using appropriate metadata and allow iTunes to look after file names behind the scenes.

  • Does Apple have the right to remove music from my HDD?

Not only are tunes I purchased missing from my library (the name, the duration, the artist, etc. are still listed) but also from my hard drive. I'd downloaded a free album and it appeared in my library for a while and then, after an recent update to iTunes, it and many other tunes are missing from my library and hard drive.

I'm not sure that's the right question. For instance, when you sync an iPod, iTunes will be adding and removing files from the iPod's hard drive as a normal part of the operation. I'm fairly certain however, that the Software License Agreement that you acknowlegded when you installed iTunes will absolve Apple of liability for any loss of data that may occur directly or indirectly through the use of their software. It is your responsibiliity to back up any and all data that matters to you.
When you say the files are missing, do you mean that there are entries in the library that come up with the exclamation symbol or that the entries themselves have been removed? Have you actually tried searching your hard drive in case these files not been migrated properly and are simply not where iTunes now expects them to be?
    *Adding new items/removing orphans*
Try iTunes Folder Watch or iTunes Library Updater. Folder Watch is much faster on the adding files front, can be set to run in the background and includes a useful exclusion feature, however it’s really slow at removing orphans. iTLU is better for this although doing it manually after looking at a list of proposed removals generated by Folder Watch is probably faster still. iTLU can also be set to update iTunes when you've used 3rd party tools to change tag info.
These tools can either be used directly or to guide you in the process of moving data to where iTunes expects to find it.

  • Moved audio folder, how I do I point itunes in the right direction?

...without having to manually go through every single song and point it to the new location?
Please tell me there's a way to do this.
    Thanks!

    A question to ask:
Do you have iTunes 'managing' the music folder within your User/Music/iTUnes folder currently? If so, then the previous suggestion of letting iTunes Preferences move it for you is valid.
If however, you have your music in another location (different partition, external harddrive, etc), then the previous comment does not apply.
I have mine on a different HD partition, as I do not want GB of music in my user folder. And have successfully changed location of it (though not something to do lightly or often). I will have to dig up the notes I made on that.

Now that I subscribe to iTunes in the Cloud, could I exclude the backup of my music to save space on my external drive? Should I?

  • CDs will not appear in iTunes in the right order

I have got a set of discs of somebody reading a story over six CDs. When I put them in my Mac and ask iTunes to copy them (so that I can transfer them to my Fourth Generation iPod) it cannot put the discs in the right order. Some of the disc tracks have chapter names, some of the disc tracks are merely labelled 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on. How can I get the discs into the right order so that I can hear from disc 1 to disc 6 on my iPod? Any help gratefully received. Thanks.

This happened to me. Check and make sure that you don't have "shuffle" on. You'll need to check on your "settings".
Also, did you download them in the order you wanted?

  • HT2589 after my last update my iphone and ipad has an old apple id email address which I cannot change, but itunes has the right id.  How do I fix this problem

After my last update mu iphone and ipad has an deleted apple id, but my itunes have the new on and I cannot change it on my devices.  Any help would be appreciated.

If it's an old account which you'd updated with a new email address then try logging out of it on the iPad (and iPhone) by tapping on the id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the iPad (and iPhone). If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can download updates to its apps.

  • ITunes ignores the "stop time" for music videos since 10.6.7 osx update.  Tried with iTunes 10.2.1, 10.2.2, 10.3.  Only way to make it work is to back out to 10.6.6 (time consuming).  Has nobody else noticed this?

Only a problem with music videos. Normal audio tracks work fine.  Introduced with 10.6.7.  10.6.8 failed to fix it.
Set the "stop time" of a music video to 10 seconds shorter than the full length and iTunes will still play it to the end.  Very annoying, especially if there's a bunch of noise at the end of a song.

More info: After I upgraded to 10.6.7, I first noticed the problem.  Downgraded to 10.6.6 and it worked again.  Upgraded to 10.6.8 when it was released to see if this had the issue fixed - but it didn't, iTunes failed to stop on time again (only music videos).
Just downgraded to 10.6.6 and it still doesn't work!!!  Now I'm really screwed and confused.  HELP!

  • I have music on my ipod that i cant move onto my itunes on the mac, I have music on my ipod that i cant move onto my itunes on the mac

I have a new mac, have downloaded my itunes on to it pluged in my devices and half the music on my Ipod has not transfered. How can i get it into my itune library ?

Plug in your device and wait for it to show up in iTunes. After it does click on it, then go to "Music." Shift+click to select the desired audio files, and manually drag them up to the "music" folder at the top left within iTunes. If that doesn't work we can try something else.
