Itunes stopped reading cds

itunes used to read cds with no problems and was also able to import music off of them. Now for whatever reason itunes stopped reading cds whenever I load them into the disc drive. I have to close the itunes window , pop in the cd into the disc drive, wait for itunes to automatically open and then I can see the contents of the cd. How do I fix it and moreover why did it start behaving in this manner?

Just recently my iTunes stopped reading blank cds, I put a blank cd in the drive and go to the playlist that I want to burn and click burn and then it says please insert a blank cd and spits it out.
Hi bigL1324,
I had this problem as well. Open the playlist first, Then insert a blank CD...it worked for me

  • Need to reboot Itunes to read CD/DVD drive

    Hi!
I've been importing CDs into Itunes - audiobooks with 7 to 11 cds in the set. Since December, when I received an Ipod Touch for Christmas and had to update Itunes to whatever version that was, I'm having a problem getting Itunes to read CDs after importing the previous CD.
    Here's what happens:
    1) I'll put a CD into my Dell Insprion laptop (running Windows 7 64 bit), Itunes opens up and imports CD information.
    2) I click "Import CD" and off it goes.
    3) When it's done, I eject the CD using the keyboard eject button and replace with the next CD.
    4) Next CD is inserted and laptop recognized the VD/CD as being loaded, but CD does not show up in Itunes - not in left hand column under "Devices" nor can I click on "Retrieve CD Names' as it's greyed out.
    5) I have to close Itunes, reopen it and the the CD is there, waiting to be ripped.
Now, sometimes I can go 3 CDs in a row before I have to restart Itunes, but often it's one at a time.
The CD drive is recognized by Windows, Winamp, Media Player - every other program I have on the laptop regonizes that there is a CD in the drive except Itunes. Today I updated to 10.6, but this didn't solve the problem. Previously I had tried repairing Itunes, but that did nothing.
I'm getting very, very frustrated, but when I check online assuming that it's an Itunes issue as everything else sees the CD, but no one seems to be having any issue like this.
My husband it telling me to live with it - he doesn't have a problem with HIS Itunes, but he has a different computer - but it's very frustrating when ripping an 11 CD audiobook!
Thank you for any help you can give.

I have the exact same problem with an HP Pavilion notebook running Windows XP.  I cannot recall when it started but for at least the past year or so I have had to restart iTunes for it to recognize a CD in the drive (not the first one because that always works OK).  I have found numerous discussions on this issue in other forums, and tried EVERY suggested fix.  Nothing has worked.  Windows sees the disk but iTunes doesn't.  Just like you, it sometimes works OK for two or three disks in a row but sooner or later I have to restart iTunes to burn another disk.  I suspect it's a permissions issue: iTunes knows what it is supposed to do but Windows keeps taking away it's permission to see a disk.  Perhaps there is some application on my PC that would rather be the default app to look at CDs and is "stealing" iTunes' permission?  Dunno.  Apple needs to fix this problem.  I say that because the folks at Microsoft are totally incapable of doing anything right.  Windows itself is a mass of fixes and patches.  I often wonder how it works at all.  When this machine craps out, I am switching to a Mac; perhaps even sooner than that.  This is my LAST Windows PC.

  • My iTunes stopped being able to import all commercial CDs! Can't read them. Please help.

My iTunes stopped being able to import all commercial CDs! I keep getting this message: The song names for this CD could not be found online. Do you still want to import the songs? These are store-bought, mainstream artists. Never had problems before. This is a new Mac Book pro. I am temporarily relocating and was transferring most of my commercial CDs to Itunes. Went through about 100 CDs, including a dozen today, and now none will read. I tried downloading new software (it was up-to-date), and quitting and restarting. It seems that everyone who had this problem that I found on Internet searches was trying to import burned discs. Please help

So far, there are three of us who've posted a similar problem, in the last hour or so.   It may be working for you now;  it has started working for some, but it's still not working for me.  It's not your Mac.  It seems to be something related to Gracenote Media Database.
Your statement says it's stopped importing the commercial CD's but I think you mean it will import them, but not recognize song titles or album titles, even though your CD's are regular commercial CDs.  If that's the case, you are experiencing the same thing I am.

  • Itunes stops working as soon as it reads first track while importing CD (APPCRASH). Need help!

Itunes stopped working error comes up as soon as it reads first track while importing CD and needs to close program (APPCRASH). I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes several times - also ran CD diagnostics in iTunes and looks OK. I'm on Vista Home Premium Edition. If it will help I saved the CD Diagnostics from ITunes and the Windows APPCRASH info. I've spend several hours trying to figure this out. Any ideas?

Problem solved! I had my pc plugged into a port replicator to use a bigger screen, etc. When I unplugged it and tried to import the CDs it worked fine. Not sure why I got the error but whenever I get unexpected errors in the future, I will take it off the replicator to eliminate that possibility. Thanks to all who reviewed.

  • Help please! can't import CDs, Itunes stops working and shuts down:(

Hi All, Itunes worked fine up until couple of days ago and now when I insert a CD to import it recognises the CD but when it starts importing, itunes stops working and shuts down immediately. What do I need to do? I read the discussions but couldn't find an answer, most questions were about burning a CD so your help will be highly appreciated...many thanks indeed

Itunes worked fine up until couple of days ago and now when I insert a CD to import it recognises the CD but when it starts importing, itunes stops working and shuts down immediately.
First we need to check your precise version number, elektra. In iTunes go "Help > About iTunes" and wait for the version number to scroll up from the bottom of the screen.
Do you see *iTunes 10.1.0.54* ? If so, we need to update you to version 10.1.0.56 . It probably wont appear for you in Apple Software Update if you already have a 10.1.0.54 already installed, so you'll need to download the installer from the Apple Website, as per the following document:
[iTunes 10.1 for Windows: iTunes may stop working and need to quit while importing or syncing audio|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3591]

  • How can i get itunes to read my CDs again

I cannot get iTunes to read my CDs. It keeps telling me to reinstall iTunes, and I did, but it still will not read my CDs

    Hey there wesley254,
It sounds like your audio cds are not being seen in iTunes when you insert them into your drive. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article about that very subject:
iTunes for Windows doesn't recognize my audio CDs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1584
Verify Windows recognizes your optical drive
If Microsoft Windows recognized your optical drive, but doesn't recognize it now, follow the instructions in iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install.
    Check for software updates
Microsoft or your computer's manufacturer may have released updated software. Check to see if there are updates to Windows or to the software that controls the drive. Check your computer manufacturer's website for updates, particularly for updates to the CD or DVD drive. If you bought the drive separately from the computer, check the drive manufacturer's website. In some cases, software drivers for other devices (such as video and sound cards) could affect how the CD or DVD drive works. Make sure your video and sound cards have the most current drivers.
    Check for firmware updates
From time to time manufacturers publish updates to a CD or DVD drive's internal software (known as firmware). Check your computer manufacturer's website for firmware updates first. This is important because the internal drives used by some companies (including Dell) require special firmware. If an update is not available from the computer manufacturer, check with the company that made the drive. In some cases, firmware for other devices (such as video and sound cards) could affect how the CD or DVD drive works. Make sure your video and sound cards have the latest firmware as well.
Important: Use special care when installing firmware updates. Incorrectly installing a firmware update could damage the drive and make it unusable. Always check with the computer manufacturer first before checking with the drive manufacturer.
    Additional steps
If you have more than one optical drive, try using iTunes with each drive.
    Burner software conflicts
If iTunes had previously been working and you recently installed some software that also includes CD burning capabilities (including Napster, Audible, or other online music store software), you may need to do a Repair installation of iTunes.
If iTunes still does not recognize audio CDs after you try these steps, it is possible that third-party software has installed device filters on your computer that are contributing to this issue. Learn more about device filters and how to resolve issues they cause.

  • Itunes won't read cds

I just installed Itunes on my Dell Latitude (Xp). When I place a CD in, Itunes opens up, but it doesn't inport the songs. I read through the help section in the software and updated all of the drivers and still NOTHING. Any ideas on why this is happening? Any help would be appreciated folks.

I'm having a similar problem on my Dell Dimension 8200. Itunes won't recognize my CDs though Windows media player reads and plays no problem. Went to Apple site, watched "how to" video on topic, upgraded to version 6 itunes, upgraded firmware for my cd player. CD diagnostics in Itunes sees the cds noting that "Audio CD reading succeeded". Go figure. It WON'T show the tracks and when I go to File - Import a dialog box opens for my drive but no content shows. HELP - I just got three of these for my family but it won't work!

  • I have iphone 3gs. I upgraded its software through itunes but it stopped reading sim. Then I restored but since then iphone is locked with message to insert a carrier compatible sim. I've checked my sim is ok. How to restore the iphone?

I have iphone 3gs. I upgraded its software through itunes but it stopped reading sim. Then I restored but since then iphone is locked with message to insert a carrier compatible sim. I've checked my sim, it is ok. How to restore the iphone?

I'm going to make some guesses here. You bought your phone second hand. In other words, not from Apple and not from your carrier. What you got is a hacked phone that was originally carrier locked, most likely to AT&T in the US. You are NOT in the US. (If I get any of this wrong, please tell me).
What has happened is when you updated the software, it was re-locked to the original carrier.  ONLY the carrier can authorize an unlock. If it is locked to AT&T, you're out of luck as they WILL NOT unlock an iPhone for any reason.
If it's locked to another carrier, you will have to find out what carrier that is (you can NOT tell by looking at the model number) and find out if they unlock iPhones. If you can't find out, or if they do not, then your only real option is to sell the phone and purchase one from a LEGITIMATE source.
You can find out who the supported carriers are here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937

  • Itunes stops responding for no apparent reason

I have a new iPod (7th generation) that I am using iTunes to download from.
My computer is a Dell Latitude 3540 running Windows 7 (64-bit) Professional Service Pack 1.
My iTunes is version 11.3.1.2 (just downloaded yesterday as I was informed it was a new version that corrected some problems). The first version of iTunes I had was 11.2.2.3.
The problem I am about to explain has happened with both of the above versions.
I am attempting to get my CDs into iTunes now.
When I insert a CD iTunes will read all the tracks. It then starts downloading all of them using the iTunes native format. When it downloads the last track the CD ejects but iTunes no longer responds. I can select nothing on the open window - it is dead.
When I open up the task manager it shows that iTunes is not responding. I can not end the task using from the task manager.
Other things on the computer work fine after iTunes stops responding. The only way I have found to clear this issue is to shutdown and restart the computer. When I open iTunes again I can see the CD that I loaded in iTunes. I can also download it to my iPod OK. But when I try and load another CD into iTunes the same thing occurs again.
So it "sort of works" but having to restart my computer after loading each new CD is not right and time consuming.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • ITunes stops working when labelling CD's, iTunes stops working when labelling CD's

I am using iTunes version 10.5.0.142 with Windows7. I recently attempted to load some audio CDs into iTunes, unsurprisingly 'gracenotes' could not find the track titles and so I went to label the tracks myself. I right-clicked on the device (audio CD) shown on the listing on the left and right-clicked, and selected 'Get Info' from the pop-up box - this invites you to label all the tracks with the artist, book-title etc. As soon as I attempted to input the artist name  - the screen froze and iTunes stopped working, a box instructs you to cancel and you are kicked out!
Curiously if you click on each track and select 'Get Info' it allows you to enter all the information track by track and I can successfully import the CD. But what a tedious process with 25 tracks per CD!
I think this is a software error - hopefully fixed with the next version, but has anybody else experienced this problem?

    Thanks for responding.
I have found a way around the problem. Import the CD without the information, then find the tracks in the 'music' Library folder and label them 'en bloc' there  (click on the first and last track with the 'shift' key depressed) It will ask you if you want to label multiple tracks say yes.
Hope it works for you too!

  • Optical drive suddenly stopped reading

I was in the middle of ripping a series of CDs in iTunes when the drive suddenly stopped reading the CDs' contents - I have tried several CDs, including re-trying ones I had already ripped. It does not get beyond track list. Do I need a new drive or can I solve it? I have also tried using a CD cleaning disc. 3 years old iMac with Mavericks installed, no previous problems. It still reads disc title and content list and loads / ejects correctly.

Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Itunes stop working when importing cd

Every time I try to import a cd, itunes stops working and closes down. What do I do? Please Help! And where did gracenote come from. That never showed up before. Anyone know how to disable gracenote?
    Thanks, Amanda

There's a bug with 10.1.0.54, Amanda, that is causing "iTunes has stopped working messages" (citing CoreAudioToolbox.dll in the Problem Reports for the error) for some folks when importing CDs with the AAC encoding, adding/converting files to AAC, and in some cases syncing devices (when the convert to 128 kbps AAC option is enabled).
Short of rolling back your iTunes to 10.0.1.22 and your Apple Application Support to 1.3.2 (CoreAudioToolbox.dll is kept in the Apple Application Support program files), there's a few possible workarounds.
    (1) Change your importing prefs to use a different encoding (won't help with the device syncing variation though), and/or disable the convert to 128 kbps AAC when syncing option.
    (2) Replace your CoreAudioToolbox.dll version 7.9.4.0 with a 7.9.3.0 as per:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12576816#12576816
    (3) Or, replace your CoreAudioToolbox.dll version 7.9.4.0 with a shadow copy of a 7.9.3.0 as per:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12583499&#12583499
    (4) Or, if no known-good copy of 7.9.3.0 is available and your PC doesn't have a shadow copy of the 7.9.3.0, you can replace your CoreAudioToolbox.dll version 7.9.4.0 with a 7.9.3.0 by performing some installation gymnastics with the current (11 am 18 Nov NZ time) version of the Safari 5.0.2 installer, as per:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12598386&#12598386
*NB with (4) if you have a 64-bit version of Vista or 7* ... the Apple Application Support program files are instead located at:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\
(2, 3 and 4 do help with the device-syncing variation.)
