ITunes stops responding after moving library

I moved my iTunes library to an external drive because my internal drive was full. I linked to the new location via iTunes preferences. The folder is an exact replica of the old one, just in a new location. Now iTunes can not find anything, and freezes up as soon as I try to re-link to a file (and OK it when it asks if I want to search for other missing files). My library is huge, organized, with album artwork, seasons of TV shows, movies, etc. Does anyone have any tips to fix this, save having to relink one file at a time?

I linked to the new location via iTunes preferences.
That's not how you do it.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
2011 ilounge article: Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/  - An article with good background information (similar to the links above), particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick answer above. Unfortunately under the single term "transferring library" it describes two very different moves; relocating just your media (not  really transferring your library and not recommended unless you really need this configuration), and relocating media+database (really your whole "library").  Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.

Check out the article below to troubleshoot the crashing with importing the CD. Startup iTunes in Safe Mode or even try it in a new user to see if that works.

  • Problems w/ iTunes locating files after moving library to external HDD

My iTunes collection of Music has outgrown my iBook hard unfortunately, so I finally decided to switch all my music to an external hard drive. I followed this tutorial given by iLounge (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/) step by step, and the hope was that it would be a clean transition so I could make space on my laptop, however I ran into a huge glitch. After going into my preferences and changing where the Library was located (from the laptop to Ext. HD), I went ahead and consolidated my library to the Ext HD. That went okay, or so I thought, but when I tried using some of the songs, I noticed the exclamation point meaning it could find the the song. So i went try and find the song on the external hard drive and for reason, when iTunes was consolidating(copying) the music some songs didn't transfer. I've reset location to the default on the laptop HD, but I'm having to go through and manually locate files that iTunes can't "find". Is there an easier way to get the library reload the original location of the files w/o deleting everything and reimporting the whole library? And how would I do a clean transition?

about the middle of the page they suggest starting iTunes while holding option. then choose "rebuild library"
This did not work for me. I still get icon for "dead tracks" on most of my music. And when holding the option key you just get to choose the library - not rebuild. I'll look to see if there is another way to rebuild. I did find this on Doug's Apple Scripts site: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/solutions01.php#003
+• Wait a sec! I didn't delete any files, but I still see "!" next to some tracks. What gives?+
+Some users report that their files are intact, yet on occasion, some files go AWOL...they still exist, but for some reason iTunes can't see them, and the tracks they represent show the dreaded "!". To discover the facts, you can use List MIA's, mentioned above, which will create a list of these tracks; then you can go hunting for them. To re-associate these tracks, you must click on them; iTunes will ask if you want to locate the missing file, and you weave through an Open/Save dialog for each one.+
+I have read reports of people having success with 1) Repairing Permissions (see your Mac Help) and 2) ensuring that your files are set to "Open with:" iTunes—you set this in a single respresentative file's Get Info box; be sure to click "Change all". This latter solution worked for me when, mysteriously, iTunes failed to recognize older files I had ripped with SoundJam and MACast in OS 9 back in the last century.+
+I have often been asked: "But my tracks are right there! Can't you write a script that just looks for the files in the Music folder?" It's not that easy. However I did put together iTunes Track CPR. It uses the existing data from a "dead track" to try and locate its file in the Music folder. It is not perfect (except for play counts, tag data will be rescued), but it does work well under most circumstances.+
I am going to try the iTunes Track CPR and see if that helps.

  • ITunes stops responding immediately after opening

My iTunes stops responding immediately after opening and even force-quit doesn't do.
Baically it freezes between pressing it and opening the window. In my large library, I can see that it loads it and then nothing more. The menu appears and then the wheel. Force quitting doesn't shut the program, no matter how I do it. It leaves the arrow and the only way is to restart the computer and start again.
I tried using another account, and it does the same. I tried with a new library. I tried with new prefs folder both on the user and on the Mac HD. I tried reinstalling iTunes. I even tried reinstalling the whole OS X - but nothing. The only thing is that after zapping PRAM it might work once or twice, but no more.
This is with iTunes 7.0.2, QuickTime 7.1.3 and OS 10.4.8
I don't know what else to do.
    Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. It started recently - maybe about two weeks ago - and occasionally when I launch iTunes it just freezes. I can't force quit it completely - it still shows in the Dock as though it's running, though it's not present in Activity Monitor.
Curiously, I've also had a couple of kernel panics when clicking iTunes buttons in the past week. I don't recall any system update that might have affected either iTunes or QuickTime, so I'm stumped... The only way to get iTunes back is to log out or restart.

  • Itunes stops responding for no apparent reason

I have a new iPod (7th generation) that I am using iTunes to download from.
My computer is a Dell Latitude 3540 running Windows 7 (64-bit) Professional Service Pack 1.
My iTunes is version 11.3.1.2 (just downloaded yesterday as I was informed it was a new version that corrected some problems). The first version of iTunes I had was 11.2.2.3.
The problem I am about to explain has happened with both of the above versions.
I am attempting to get my CDs into iTunes now.
When I insert a CD iTunes will read all the tracks. It then starts downloading all of them using the iTunes native format. When it downloads the last track the CD ejects but iTunes no longer responds. I can select nothing on the open window - it is dead.
When I open up the task manager it shows that iTunes is not responding. I can not end the task using from the task manager.
Other things on the computer work fine after iTunes stops responding. The only way I have found to clear this issue is to shutdown and restart the computer. When I open iTunes again I can see the CD that I loaded in iTunes. I can also download it to my iPod OK. But when I try and load another CD into iTunes the same thing occurs again.
So it "sort of works" but having to restart my computer after loading each new CD is not right and time consuming.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Updated and now Itunes stops responding

I had just finished organizing my library and I was asked if I wanted to update itunes. So I did. I got it installed, started it up, and half way through "updating itunes library" itunes freezes and stops responding. I tried multiple times to no avail. So I uninstalled itunes and redownloaded it. Now when I try to add music to my library, itunes stops responding. What is the deal? Is there anyway I can get an older version of itunes?

tried several times and found some good suggestions on these forums but still no joy
tried installing version 7.3 which got released but still the same
i reinstalled an older version of itunes (7.1) and the problem was gone so gonna stick with this for a while

iTunes stops responding when I plug in my iPod.  I have updated iTunes to latest version, still crashes.  OS is Vista. How do I fix this?

    Hm... Strange.
    I had reset the iPhone.
I tried disabling the auto-launch of iPhoto, and...
...when I plugged iPhone in, it started to freeze iTunes, but after a minute or so, the iPhone started synching. I found this odd because I had disabled auto-sync (I press Sync in iTunes when I want to have it Sync).
Now, of course, I do want auto-launch of iPhoto back on, since I like it for when I attach my digital cameras. I hope that when I set it back, it won't re-introduce the problem.
The restart I did may have helped. I resist restarting because my wife's account is often open and she frequently leaves unsaved files up, so it is a pain to respectfully close out her work and then restart.

  • Can someone help me understand why my i tunes stop working after my library comes up?

Can someone please help me understand why my i tunes stop working after my library comes up?

    Hello generousdragon,
It sounds like you are unable to use iTunes shortly after launching it. Use the following article to help troubleshoot the issue, named:
iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717
Start with this step to isolate 3rd party plugins that may be causing an issue, an use the rest of the troubleshooting if needed.
    Start iTunes in Safe Mode
Open iTunes in Safe Mode to isolate any interference from plug-ins or scripts not manufactured by Apple.
Hold down Shift–Control while opening iTunes. You should see a dialog that says "iTunes is running in safe mode" before iTunes finishes starting up.
    Click Continue.
See if the issue you're experiencing persists in Safe Mode.
If you have the same issue while iTunes is in Safe Mode, proceed to the "Create a new user account" section. If you don't experience the same issue, follow these steps to remove third-party plug-ins.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

  • ITunes stops responding when switching between stores

Since the update to 10.5.3.3, I have been experiencing a long wait-time to switch between different nations' iTunes Stores that was not evident in the previous version. Multiple times this morning, iTunes has simply stopped responding as the switch occurs. I was just shutting down the program before, but I let it sit there and it took around 5 minutes to go from one country's store to another, when it took only moments before this update. I do not know if this is only an issue because I recently updated and have not restarted, if it is only affecting Windows users, or if it is a bug that needs to be fixed. What is going on and what should fix things?

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime.
I have set Norton Personal Firewall to allow all access for Itunes and Quicktime
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Itunes.
Basically, if I do anything, Itunes stops responding. Can anyone help?

Mac book pro stops responding after Maverick OS restart. Currently have a circle with a line through it after 20+ hours. Tried to shut it down and use the Time Machine to restore but no response. How can I restore with Time Machine if it will not start?

    sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

If Photoshop crashes the should be a System crash report generated by your OS. For example Windows
