ITunes store movies & chapters

I purchased a movie from the iTMS the other day to see what kind of compression settings it used. Of course it was H.264, but the data rate was a little slower than I expected (about 1600kbps), and I can't see what the audio data rate is. I'm going to assume 128kbps. I also noticed that the movie had chapter markers! Cool!
So, a few questions.
1. Does anybody know what the audio data rate is? How can I tell (I have QT Pro).
2. The movie is 640x480. Wouldn't they want to use a higher data rate? Like 2000-2500 kbps?
3. I'm backing up all of my DVDs using mactheripper and handbrake. But neither one (afaik) let's me save the DVD chapters. Is there a way to automatically keep them in my compressed movie?
Thanks!

I tried MetadataHootenanny114 today explicitly for the chapter markets, but wasn't too impressed for 2 reasons:
I was generally satisfied with a small limited number of chapters on short clips but was disappointed when I tests them in a complete movie containing 20 markers. Source movie was roughly 6 seconds shorter than the converted movie so there was some "slippage" of markers as the movie progressed. (Can probably live with manually adjusting these if I cannot come up with a better conversion workflow.)
The chapters were listed as 'chapter1', 'chapter2', etc.
This is the default for manual insertions and the default found on DVDs from which markers are extracted. If you prefer a more meaningful "description," simply replace the default or extracted text with your own entries.
The .mov file I saved it as had a choppy playback in iTunes (not metahoot's fault) when the controller was displayed. This was a 720x304 movie playing at 2600kbps. Somewhere around 1.7GB. However, the original .mp4 movie without the chapters played back just fine.
Have not noted this problem but then, I stayed within the specifications stated by Apple. While the number of macroblocks contained in a 720 x 304 matrix block is less than 1200 (i.e., only 855), the 720 width exceeds the stated maximum of 640 pixels for the H.264 "low-complexity" profile and exceeds the specified maximum of 1.5 Mbps. In addition, the same is true for an MPEG-4 conversion if that was used here. Of course, iPod compatibility may not be of primary importance here. Have noted however, that plyback in iTunes appears to change depending on whether or not an imported clip meets the "low-complexity" specification -- a somewhat puzzeling development.
From my understanding, .mp4 won't play with chapters, so I saved the compressed .mp4 as a self-contained .mov file from QT Player Pro.
Have managed to get H.264 "low-complexity" 480 x XXX and 640 x XXX aspect ratio clips to play in iTunes but not when sync'd to the iPod. Have been unable to get 320 x XXX aspect ratio "low-complexity" (have to check whetherthese were actually "low-complexity Movie to iPod" files), H.264 "baseline," or MPEG-4 encoded files to play chaptered in either iTunes or on the iPod.
The other difference was that the chapters in iTMS .m4v movies had thumbnails!
Interesting. Have yet to see/analyze an ITMS file. (Was waiting for a "freebie" to be offered.) Will have to see if "enhanced" chaptering options are applicable here.
What is Apple using to compress their movies?
A good question. Was disappointed that they still haven't fixed the H.264 "latency" problem. Most of my longer test clips created by the QT "Movie to iPod" option yesterday had data rates in excess of that allowed by iTunes for syncing to the iPod or chapter playback in iTunes. Process seemed hit or miss depending on content. (Will have to drag out more source files and see if that will improve things.) Have already requested access to "low-complexity" profile be added to the "Movie to MPEG-4" export option in a manner similar to the current "baseline" profile alternative.

  • Navigating iTunes store movies in iPad

OK, I hope I am missing something, but this is driving me a bit mad.
Is it possible to navigate the iTunes Store movies and TV collection by genre, on your iPad? It is possible within iTunes on the Mac, but I cannot for the life of me find a way to do it on the iPad.
All I can do is see the top charts, or a Genius list, or Featured ... but there seems to be no way to choose to browse, for example, all movies in the Family genre.
Can anyone help? Am I just being particularly dense today?
    Kip

I know that content differs from country to country depending upon laws and restrictions of the country and the content being licensed in that country, but it seems that the button should be there if you have the Movies tab in iTunes in the music section. Typically, if content is not available, the tab will not show up at all.
Try doing a search for anything in the movies section and then cancel the search. See if the button shows up. Try quitting iTunes completely as well and then try again. This is a copy and paste that I keep handy for quick "generic" fixes. You can try these as well.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quitting iTunes - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • ATV iTunes store movie downloads vanished

Having searched for related topics and come up empty, I am posting a new thread concerning iTunes store movies purchased directly to and lost from my ATV (disclaimer: in searching for related topics, almost all of my key words showed up results of "0", so I am suspicious that the support site is wonky ... I had to scan for related topics and tired of it before finding anything close). I have the iTunes receipts, so I am sure that I "purchased" the movies and did not "rent" by accident. Both movies have vanished from my ATV, without having been watched. They also do not appear on any of my other computers iTunes libraries. I did verify that they were purchased and were listed with a movie downloaded from my desktop computer to ATV, which is still present on my ATV. Just the two movies purchased through iTunes directly to my ATV are lost.
Having read Winston Churchill's post on ATV not being a back up device, I am wondering if the ATV has problems with retaining content. If it is not able to reliably store files, is it in fact just an expensive "chord" linking my computer to a tv? (Winston Churchill refers to the ATV as an "iTunes extender", not a stand alone device ... could have sworn my ATV is "standing alone").
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
ATV and computers running latest iTunes and ATV software.

    Hey Chris,
just wondering where you got this information from (how the iTunes movies are formatted/encoded)? is there an apple technical document that gives the specs for the iTunes movies? has Apple released this information? if so where (could you possibly include a link?), and if not, how do you know it? i'm encoding some of the DVDs that i own to put on my ipod using handbrake. Does this mean that if i set my handbrake average bitrate to 1500 kbps (and the format to MPEG-4) that i will be importing them at the same quality as the movies on iTunes? thanx very much!

  • Will the Hong Kong iTunes store movie selection be expanded and will TV shows be made available?

Will the Hong Kong iTunes store movie selection be expanded and will TV shows be made available?
This is a determining factor as to whether I will buy an Apple TV.
So far the movie selection is around 150 only with no TV shows available. Having said that the HD playback is flawless!

We're all just fellow users here and as such have no information as to where Apple's negotiations with the HK movie and TV show owners might stand. It's totally up to those owners, and even in the US, the content owners have been reluctant. We'll all just have to wait and see.

  • My MacBook Pro iTunes movie purchase is not showing in iTunes store movie purchases nor does it show on my iPad or Apple TV.  Can someone please help me with a solution?  Thanks.

First of all, I live in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Sometimes, I use a VPN to search on the web here. I purchased Toy Story 3 on my MacBook Pro 2011 OS/X - Lion through iTunes.  I initially had trouble downloading it which may be due to being on and off the VPN but after a while it finally downloaded and shows up in my iTunes library on my MacBook.
Under my Apple ID account (which is the only Apple ID account I have), I look under purchase history and it shows that I paid for Toy Story which is where I got my Order # from.  But if you go to the iTunes Store then to the Quick Links then click on Purchased, under all my Movies, it does NOT show Toy Story 3 as one of my movies.
Now when I go to my iPad (3rd gen.), Toy Story 3 does not show up under purchased movies (all or not on my iPad).  It does not show up on my Apple TV as well.  If I want to have Toy Story 3 on my iPad or Apple TV, then it says I have to purchase it again.
I have searched for help via Apple support communities but so far none of their solutions have worked for me.  I have tried logging off iTunes & App Store on iPad and also shutting down the iPad.  I also made sure that under iTunes Preferences>Store that iTunes in the Clouds purchases is checked. Can someone please help me with this?  Your consideration is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Thanks King_Penguin for taking time to read and reply.
I just purchased this movie on Thursday, May 15, so just a few days ago.  I have never had any trouble whatsoever since I have been in Vietnam.  I have downloaded several movies and even music and they have all synced to my respected Apple products except for this purchase.
Sorry, I don't quite understand what you mean by studios and different versions.  Could you please explain?
I checked my purchased list in my purchase history under my account and there are no hidden items.

  • ITunes Store Movie Purchase Play Immediately ?

I bought a movie from the iTunes Store and it said it was going to take about an hour to download. After 10 minutes I tried and could play it in iTunes on my computer but I could not get it to show up on Apple TV until the whole movie had been downloaded. Should I have been able to start watching the movie on Apple TV while it was still downloading ?
I tried disconnecting from Apple TV, quitting and restarting iTunes, etc. but it would not show up on Apple TV until it was completely downloaded.

    Jeff,
You're correct. You can play the movie in iTunes while it's downloading, but not in Apple TV. I sure hope the next software release allows for this feature.
    Kind Regards,
    Julian

  • Apple TV taking a long time to download an iTunes Store movie rental

Normally when we rent a movie from the iTunes Store via Apple TV we're able to start watching it within a few minutes. We just rented one, however, and the downloading process is going super slow. It's been downloading for at least 10 minutes, it's just 22 percent done, and AppleTV is saying that we won't be able to start watching it for another 35 minutes.
Our Internet seems to be working fine and at normal speeds otherwise though.
Any idea why the Apple TV is taking so long to download this movie rental?

He probably means that it's too late in the evening to start the video, at least that was our problem.
The movie was Hi-def, lineout, but they almost always are and we've never had it take so long--it would have been faster for me to drive out to the local video store and pick up a DVD.

  • ITunes crashes when clicking on iTunes Store - Movies section

iTunes starts just fine. Been using it for a long time. I have not always looked in the "Movies" section in the iTunes Store. Yesterday I tried it and when I clicked on "Movies" iTunes looked like it was getting the data but then it just disappears! It crashes and leaves no event error ID in the Windows system. So I do not know what is going on. iTunes works great in every other place - music runs fine, library and even the Genius mode is working great.
I even tried re-installing iTunes by downloading a fresh install. That did not fix the problem.
So is there some bug right now with the Movies section? Or is there something I can do to fix this?
    Thanks!

Well, I never got any help from anyone on this forum with this question. However I was able to resolve it on my own so I am posting the solution here for those they may find it useful.
First, I determined the problem was that Quicktime could not start. It would start and crash - no window would pop up. So whenever I tried anything within iTunes that uses Quicktime (Movies in iTunes Store, or my Movies in my library, etc) it would crash iTunes.
So I had ATI Tray Tools installed and that seems to be what causes Quicktime to crash whenever I tried to run it. I removed ATI Tray Tools and everything works perfect now again. Strange!

  • ITunes Store movie selection...(USA)

Does iTunes Store plan on hosting any non-Disney movies? I just read about downloading videos and it specifically stated that all iTunes Store videos were from some sort of Disney company.

They will if the movie studios decide to participate. So far only Disney has been willing to sign up. When, or indeed if, the other studios will get on board with the iTunes Store, no one here knows.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums, in the User Tips Library and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.
    Regards.

  • Itunes store movies without subtitles

    Dear all
I understand that buying movies from iTunes is equivalent to buy the DVDs in any store. Therefore, why the DVD comes with many options of idioms and subtitles and the movies from iTunes not? Is it a technical reason or marketing reason?
    Does anyone have a clue?
    Regards
    Nelson.

In the US, movies are all English (that I've seen, anyway) and few if any have subtitles. Movies sold in other countries (where available) will probably be in the dominant/legal language in that country. For instance, I would expect the movies sold in the France iTunes Store would mostly be in French.

  • ITunes store movie download and quicktime and other media players

    (1) Have bought a movie and downloaded it from the iTunes store. It playable using quicktime but not playable on the other 5 media players installed on my laptop. Is this the way it should be?
    (2) Quicktime is the only player (irrespective of the format)that does not work using the 's-video out'on my laptop. Is that the way it should be......thanks

II'm having the same exact problem! I rented this movie and tried to download it. It got all the way to the "processing" stage at the end but then failed and I had to retry the download. Well it kept saying that I had to retry so I restarted my iPad and checked tried to I check under my downloads in the iTunes Store. The downloads tab had disappeared so I decided to check under my videos and sure enough it was there. I went to the movie and there was a play arrow and a cloud with an arrow on it to download it. I tried to play it and I brought me to the movie screen but then closed and brought me back to the home page. Then I tried to download it from there but it would just say: "You've already rented this movie but it is not download. Go to the iTunes Store to manage your downloads."  So I go back to the iTunes Store but can't find downloads anywhere. (it's not by the purchased tab on the bottom right) I tried to search the movie again and instead of saying rent or buy, it says watch but when I try to tap "watch" it bring me to videos and the black movie screen but then closes again!! This is extremely frustrating and if anyone knows what to do that would be great. also I rented a movie today (divergent) to see if my previous movie, Hancock (the one I'm having troubles with) would appear in the downloads also. Sadly it did not, but divergent downloaded and played with no problems and it is also a larger movie.

    Hello, emmanuel1122.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try closing down iTunes and restarting it.  Once this is down attempt to resume the interrupted download.  If this is a purchased movie, try canceling the download and download it again via your past purchases.  If the issue persists, you may need to troubleshoot the connection to the iTunes Store.

  • ITunes Store Movie Rental Download Issues

Hey there. So I bought a rental movie from the iTunes store. It was downloading but I don't think it finished because my computer hibernated after a while. Since then I have been trying to resume the movie download but it won't resume or finish. It keeps saying (Error -50).

  • ITunes Store movie not syncing because login could not be verified

I bought a movie from the i tunes Store. When I sync with my ATV the movie does not sync. An information icon appears, and when I click on the icon it says that my movie could not sync because the ATV could not verify my login. The message suggest that I make sure that my ATV can connect to the internet.
My ATV is connected to the router and it can see all the computers on my network. I checked the router logs and the requests from the ATV ip address were allowed. However, I still cannot sync the purchased movie from the i tunes store.
I would be very grateful for any help.

Thanks for the help. But unfortunately it did not fix the problem.
Just as a note. I first synced my ATV with another itunes, on a different computer. Then I switched to the itunes on the current computer. My next step is to reset the ATV to the factory settings then try again.
Any more advice would be appreciated.
