ITunes stuttering video playback

I have a new HP laptop with Windows 8.1 64 bit.  It has an AMD A4-5000 processor, 1.83Ghz with 4GB RAM and Radeon HD 8330 graphics.
When trying to play my videos in iTunes (encoded h.264), they are choppy and stuttery to the point of being unwatchable.  Happens with SD and HD videos.
The exact same video files play just fine in Windows Media Player on the same computer, and they play fine on my iPad 3.
Things I have tried:
I have uninstalled all Apple software and re-installed iTunes.
I have manually installed QuickTime (I had no QuickTime icon in Control Panel after only installing iTunes).
I have installed the CCCP codec pack.
I have amended QuickTime's settings to disable Direct3D hardware acceleration, and also disabled all DirectX settings in QuickTime (i.e. "Safe Mode").
I have manually installed DirectX

OK, so I found in another thread how to enable legacy codecs via terminal, and I did that.
After that I think there was a subjective improvement the *first* time I loaded a .mov file to view in QT X, then same old stutter and lag for that file and other formats also.
FWIW, the files seem to view OK if I use VLC. But that does not help with the protected .m4V files from ITMS.
Anyone got any other suggestions?
Like I said, surely my MBP ought be able to play videos from iTunes, it used to be able to.

  • ITunes / Windows Video Playback.. (what, you actualy want to WATCH vid's?)

I'm sure there are several people out there that are having the same or similar problems, but because I can't seem to find them with the exact problem I'm having, I thought a new thread would be appropriate....
Upgraded from 6 to 7 yesterday... music seems to play OK (not as good as 6, but not all the issues other people are having). Now video playback in iTunes is little more than a slideshow with audio to (almost) match.
When I go to play back any vid podcast, or other video in my library for that matter, iTunes bumps my processor up to 100% and holds it there, and the video does little more than skip and bounce through the entire playback (even if the overlay controls go away fully, the slightest mouse movement brings them back). The audio quality seems to almost follow the video, but they get away from each other (the audio was about 2 seconds ahead of the video/slide show while watching the current version of Photoshop TV). Any other video player works fine, but if I wanted to use them, I would have never installed iTunes in the first place, the idea being that the integration was the blessing.
I USED to be able to watch a video, use Photoshop CS2, have Flash 8 open behind it, After Effects running on a seperate monitor, browse the web, and play freecell all at the same time, with several background utility style apps going all at the same time with out a hickup.
After trying the IDE fix's, the sound setup fix's and any other fix's found in the discussions (and yes, reverting them after they failed to fix the problem), I'm still having an issue, and now I can't find iTunes 6 to try to get back to a good time in life... oh why oh why apple, why do you have just as many issues as windows? I had hoped for so much more....
Anyone? Any Ideas? Anyone willing to email me itunes 6 so I can get back to a better time in life? Or provide answers? I've got a horriable track record with apple (over 20 business stopping questions, and to date 0 responses) so I am about 2 minutes from giving up
Sorry apple, but this is way past frustrating... were all your win/tel beta testers using mac's?

  • ITunes U video playback constantly freezes

I have 64Gb iphone 4S with plenty of free space.  iTunes U video (a Yale course in this case) constantly freezes during playback.  The video is downloaded onto the iphone, not streamed.  I do not have this problem playing the video through the video app.  I would like to be able to use the iTunes U app.  Anyone else having this problem?

Try updating to the new iTunes U app that was released today.
If that doesn't work, try testing other Yale course videos and other iTunes U videos.

  • Itunes stutters video on my G4 Powerbook.

i'm running itunes 7 on both my G5 and my G4 powerbook. for some reason new videos play fine on the G5 but stutter on the powerbook. However, old videos still play fine on the powerbook. i had a few episodes of lost on the powerbook from last year, and i just downloaded a few episodes of prison break this evening. the old lost episodes play great but the prison break video is unwatchable because of the stutter. i've been checking the forum and this seems to be a common problem but the only solution i've seen is to delete the 3vix codec from quicktime. the problem is i don't have that codec but i still have the video stutter. any one out there have a good idea to fix this?
    G4 powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This seems to be an inconsistent problem on my Powerbook. Videos I download from iTunes Store stutter when they first start up but that resolves after about 10 seconds. If I add a movie to iTunes, the same thing or worse occurs. I am having a problem with some movies I add that, while playing fine (fullscreen or otherwise) in Quicktime, are totally unplayable in iTunes. One such file is about 5 minutes long, 640 X 480 in resolution, and 185.9 MB in filesize. No 3vix codec on my system. The unplayable file has a codec listed as "Sorenson Video 3, IMA 4:1" if that helps.

I've recently upgraded to iTunes 7 and my front row will no longer play my videos. My other music works fine and i can still play videos via iTunes, but front row just tells me i have no videos in my library.
It worked perfectly with iTunes 6. It's just stopped since the download.
    Can anyone help. Please!!!

  • ITunes 7 Video Playback Problems

I've been looking through this message board and haven't been able to find a post where this question was already asked, so I hope I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. With iTunes 7 (and the new Quicktime), all the mp4 videos on my computer will play only audio, while the video consists of either a blank window or a jumble of flashing bright colors laced with an occasional snippet of the video. All of these videos worked perfectly prior to the updates. Interestingly, there is one exception to this: all of the episodes of "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" (Season 2) play perfectly, for no apparent reason. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the applications, but that doesn't work, nor does merely trying to play them in Quicktime rather than through iTunes itself. Please let me know if there is ANY way to fix this, as I have invested a lot of time and money into my video collection! Thanks.
      Windows XP

I would like to get some more information on this. Please try these steps:
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Go to: Start menu > Control Panels > QuickTime.
    3. Click on the Advanced tab.
    4. Un-check the checkbox next to "Enable Direct3D video acceleration".
    5. Open iTunes.
    6. Play the video.
    Does the issue occur?
I also need to get some information from the affected systems:
    1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\QuickTime.
    2. Double-click on QTInfo.
    3. Click on the yellow question mark icon in the upper left corner of the window and choose Save Log.
    4. Save that file somewhere.
    5. Attach that file to an email, and send it to me. Please also let me know the results of the steps above.

  • IPad 2 stutters video playback

my inlaws have the iPad2. I made a video and it streams from either my Dropbox or Youtube. Its standard def, heavily compressed yet their iPad2 cant play it without stuttering, I cant imagine what these 85 year olds have done and why it plays back with a stutter........any ideas.

it might be from a bad connection or a bad viedo feed.

  • Video playback stutter

Hey everyone, having playback issues when using iTunes or Front Row, stuttering video playback.  This happens with purchased content in iTunes or ripped content in either software.  Using handbrake for backups of my DVDs and this is driving me nuts.  There are a few occasions when this will not happen.  But nothing consistent that I can track it.  Dual video cards, 1 to my 22" monitor and the other hdmi out to my 46" Sony Bravia.  Any thoughts would be great.
    Thanks!!

nah, i figured out the problem. It was the video, it wasnt playing well at all. I just re-downloaded it and it worked fine

  • Video playback in iTunes 7 and 7.0.1: it stutters!

Since I've upgraded to iTunes 7 and now to 7.0.1, all my music videos and tv movies play at 2 (in words: two!) frames per second when played inside iTunes. In Quicktime and also on the iPod (5g) or the TV set with an iPod connected they are playing very fine.
It seems to me that this is a problem with mpg4 because the h264-encoded files play fine in the iTunes application. Is there a workaround to fix this problem? I have over 350 music videos and short fun clips in my iTunes library to synchronize with the iPod and I'll not encode them all again to h264 just because there is a bug in iTunes.
Oh, btw.: At work I use an iMac (Intel) with the same iTunes 7.0.1-library. All the videos (mpg4 or h264) are playing fine there. Maybe Apple is not testing on the G5 anymore?
    Any help or comments appreciated!

The 3ivX codec is in your quicktime library folder, normally: root/Library/QuickTime, but I don't think, that Apple encodes their movies with an unsupported codec. Maybe there is another unsupported codec in your library that creates the iTunes-stuttering or the reason for your problem is completely different. I paste here the content of my library folder. If you have anything else in your folder, quit Quicktime Player and iTunes (if they are running) , remove the plug-in and try your movie again in iTunes. Hope, this helps.

  • Why is video playback continually stuttering after the Mountain Lion 10.8.2 update?

Since updating to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 video playback in iTunes and QuickTime is unwatchable. The video stutters constantly then plays catch up to the sound. I'm running a 2011 Mac Mini i5 2.3 GHz and 8 Gb of RAM. Anyone know how to roll back the update to a working version of Mountain Lion?

Hello, you'd have to reinstall 10.8.0 or 10.8.1, but...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Video playback in ALL applications stutters while using battery only.

Video playback in ALL applications stutters while using battery only. All OK when running from power adaptor. New battery did not fix. Recently updated iTunes to 11.0.5 and Flash player 11.8.800.94 .

I have successfully run Apple Hardware Test and it returned the error code...
    4SNS/1/40000001:VPOR
A  Google search reveals that this is a sensor error. The "V" of VPOR indicates a voltage sensor and the "P" indicates the sensor is on the Power bus. However don't yet know what the "OR" refers to.
I have had a non operative optical disk drive for a year or more but the fault with the video only developed in the last week or two. Could the "O" in VPOR refer to the Optical drive?
By the way, I got the impression from the instructions on running the Apple Hardware Test that I had to use the internal dvd drive to run the APT program from the install disk. But this turned out to be not the case. Just put install disk ito an external drive plugged into the usb ports and use system preferences to set this drive as the start up disk.

  • ITunes video playback lags badly ever since 10.3.6

I am now running 10.3.7 and iTunes 10.5.3 on a 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz, i7. 8GB RAM) and video always stutters or lags in iTunes, even without any other applications open and offline. I have tried zapping pram and the usual tactics for things like this, and hoped the update to 10.3.7 would solve it but no luck.  Help?

Just updated iTunes to most recent version. Now I'm getting jerky video playback in BOTH iTunes and QT Pro (latest version). CPU use is very high but random; ditto with video playback (i.e., doesn't hang up on the same scene/time).
I had this issue a little over a year ago after updating iTunes to the then latest version. Got nowhere with Apple's "Service" texts. I played around with configs for a while and also re-installed iTunes. It has worked fine until yesterday (same symptoms as last time). As for the past "fix": nothing I can hang a hat on. Methinks Apple updated the version I re-installed with (tho' the version # was unchanged).

  • ITunes 11 HD video playback slow/choppy/stutter/skipping in OSX

    Hi guys,
I'm running iTunes 11.0.1 in OS 10.8.2 on my 2.66 GHzm, 8 GB RAM MacBook Pro and playback in HD (1080p) movies/TV shows in iTunes is slow, choppy, stuttering and skipping. Can't seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I was having this same problem, and found one cause.
I have an extensive library on a Drobo FS.  None of the AppleTV's in the house have any problem streaming full 1080p from it, but my new iMac does.  Choppy / laggy video play.  Movies and TV shows right from the iTunes store.  I can have 3 TV's streaming, and even a 4th laptop, all streaming from the iMac iTunes using the Drobo.  They all have zero issues.  No lag, no choppy, nothing.  iMac has the issue even when nothing else is running.  Every time.
BTW, it's happend on my old iMac and the brand new one, both with iTunes 11.
I was told to try setting up a second account on my iMac, and try playing video there.  It worked.  No problems at all.  Weird.
So I started looking at differences between the new account, and my standard.  I'd already made sure nothing unusual was running, and no processor hogs (not that anything short of Handbrake at full settings has come close to pegging out the processers on the new box).  I found one thing, that made a difference.  I had Timemachine backups, going to the same Drobo FS (though a different partition) turned on on the iMac.
Timemachine was running the whole time, and didn't impact any other streaming from the same machine, but it did make iTunes video playback of 1080p movies skip like my 6 year old daughter on the iMac.  I turned it off.... no more skipping.  I've watched 5 TV shows and 2 movies on that account, and not had another single incident.
Obviously, there is still a problem.  The iMac and Drobo have enough bandwidth that they can do all the work at the same time (or I'd be seeing the problem on the other devices while streaming), but they are not playing well together on the same account.  I've also checked the throughput to the Drobo FS from the iMac... way more than necessary.  If it were a read / write thing on the Drobo, then I'd expect other devices to see the issue when I'm watching something on the iMac that is skipping, but there was still no skipping on any other device at that same time...
But, as I said, I found the root cause in my case.  I can turn off Timemachine backups while I'm watching a movie on the iMac, or I can move where I write the Timemachine backups to (going to try this over the weekend to be sure it works).  If moving the Timemachine backup to a different drive doesn't work, it's a bigger problem.
I'd really love to see Apple fix this and the issue where I have to turn iTunes on in 32bit mode when using an external library (of it gives the funky quicktime error until you delete and readd the movie).
Hope this helps some of you, if not all.

  • Audio and video playback stuttering...sometimes

I'm having issues with audio and video playback stuttering at times in several applications. It's the same kind of skipping or stuttering in each application, whether it's iTunes (version 10) or YouTube or Netflix (Safari). I can also hear it when I'm just adjusting the volume via the keyboard, the "clicks" stutter.
I'm not running anything other than iTunes and Safari at once, the iMac has 2 gbs of RAM, it's running Snow Leopard. It also will work sometimes for a while. I just can't figure out why it will work sometimes and not others. Any ideas about what the cause may be? Quicktime X have anything to do with it?

video playback stuttering at times in several applications.
    Quicktime wouldn't work either.
Until you max out your ram, you are pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place.  In the meantime, make sure you have the latest versions of
    Adobe Flash Player
    Flip4Mac
    VLC Media Player
    Perian
    Movist
I'm noticing that in general it's running extremely slowly now, even with only the browser running.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.

  • Streaming video from networked drive to iTunes stutters!

So, my brand new iMac with the optional graphics card can't play movies bought from iTunes without stuttering a little. We store the movies on a recently bought ethernet-capable 250GB drive which communicates with the iMac through a new 100Mbps switch. iTunes plays these movies flicker-free from the local HD, but not over the network. Quicktime has the same issue. That networked drive is the "iTunes Music Folder Location" specified in preferences. This is iTunes 7.0.2. Music streams fine. I've set iTunes' preferences for "streaming buffer size" to "large."
We want to store the movies on the networked drive so we can easily add capacity and access them from other machines on the network. Sounds logical, right? Isn't that what these drives are for? Help! I want my Media Server!
We also watch TV on the iMac, using an Elgato eyeTV 250. It's fine, and caches 2GB of video during playback. When we tell it to write to the networked drive, it stutters a little too. Like one 'jag' every 10-20 seconds. When we use the local disk, it's seamless.
One thought: the iMac is cabeled to that switch with a 100-foot cable. A problem?
