Itunes stutters video on my G4 Powerbook.

i'm running itunes 7 on both my G5 and my G4 powerbook. for some reason new videos play fine on the G5 but stutter on the powerbook. However, old videos still play fine on the powerbook. i had a few episodes of lost on the powerbook from last year, and i just downloaded a few episodes of prison break this evening. the old lost episodes play great but the prison break video is unwatchable because of the stutter. i've been checking the forum and this seems to be a common problem but the only solution i've seen is to delete the 3vix codec from quicktime. the problem is i don't have that codec but i still have the video stutter. any one out there have a good idea to fix this?
G4 powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

This seems to be an inconsistent problem on my Powerbook. Videos I download from iTunes Store stutter when they first start up but that resolves after about 10 seconds. If I add a movie to iTunes, the same thing or worse occurs. I am having a problem with some movies I add that, while playing fine (fullscreen or otherwise) in Quicktime, are totally unplayable in iTunes. One such file is about 5 minutes long, 640 X 480 in resolution, and 185.9 MB in filesize. No 3vix codec on my system. The unplayable file has a codec listed as "Sorenson Video 3, IMA 4:1" if that helps.

  • ITunes stuttering video playback

    I have a new HP laptop with Windows 8.1 64 bit.  It has an AMD A4-5000 processor, 1.83Ghz with 4GB RAM and Radeon HD 8330 graphics.
    When trying to play my videos in iTunes (encoded h.264), they are choppy and stuttery to the point of being unwatchable.  Happens with SD and HD videos.
    The exact same video files play just fine in Windows Media Player on the same computer, and they play fine on my iPad 3.
    Things I have tried:
    I have uninstalled all Apple software and re-installed iTunes.
    I have manually installed QuickTime (I had no QuickTime icon in Control Panel after only installing iTunes).
    I have installed the CCCP codec pack.
    I have amended QuickTime's settings to disable Direct3D hardware acceleration, and also disabled all DirectX settings in QuickTime (i.e. "Safe Mode").
    I have manually installed DirectX

    OK, so I found in another thread how to enable legacy codecs via terminal, and I did that.
    After that I think there was a subjective improvement the *first* time I loaded a .mov file to view in QT X, then same old stutter and lag for that file and other formats also.
    FWIW, the files seem to view OK if I use VLC. But that does not help with the protected .m4V files from ITMS.
    Anyone got any other suggestions?
    Like I said, surely my MBP ought be able to play videos from iTunes, it used to be able to.

  • Streaming video from networked drive to iTunes stutters!

    So, my brand new iMac with the optional graphics card can't play movies bought from iTunes without stuttering a little. We store the movies on a recently bought ethernet-capable 250GB drive which communicates with the iMac through a new 100Mbps switch. iTunes plays these movies flicker-free from the local HD, but not over the network. Quicktime has the same issue. That networked drive is the "iTunes Music Folder Location" specified in preferences. This is iTunes 7.0.2. Music streams fine. I've set iTunes' preferences for "streaming buffer size" to "large."
    We want to store the movies on the networked drive so we can easily add capacity and access them from other machines on the network. Sounds logical, right? Isn't that what these drives are for? Help! I want my Media Server!
    We also watch TV on the iMac, using an Elgato eyeTV 250. It's fine, and caches 2GB of video during playback. When we tell it to write to the networked drive, it stutters a little too. Like one 'jag' every 10-20 seconds. When we use the local disk, it's seamless.
    One thought: the iMac is cabeled to that switch with a 100-foot cable. A problem?

  • ITunes / Quicktime Video Problems With Windows VISTA

    I took up Windows Vista as soon as it was available and initially had no problems with iTunes. Then later, video clips (those purchased from iTunes and those I had converted myself) started stuttering / freezing and eventually crashing iTunes and finally I lost audio as well.
    Ayyway to cut a long story short, I have uninstalled / re-installed Vista now about eight times for problems with installing drivers for USB devices (I've finally solved all these problems). After the last install the first program I installed was iTunes, tried video and it worked flawlessly. Then, each time I added a hardware device or program I would restart Vista and retry iTunes video.
    The first item I added was a USB thumb drive (as I had on all previous occasions to take advantage of Vista's 'Ready Boost'). The thumb drive is a 'Sony 2GB micro vault tiny', and meets the transfer speed requirements for 'Ready Boost', as soon as I had set the drive up for 'Ready Boost' I started having the same problems with iTunes video and Quicktime.
    Removed the thumb drive, restarted iTunes and had flawless video playback again. Have tried this over and over with the same result.
    So my question is, has anyone else had video playback problems with iTunes / Vista and found similar problems. Trying to tie down whether this is a compatability problem with 'Ready Boost' or the thumb drive used. I have also tried a Sandisk Titanium 2GB with the same result.
    I am not sure exactly how 'Ready Boost' works, I thought it added memory that was used to cache page files to the thumb drive instead of to the HDD making a faster seek /access time? Which should make things faster. Another article I read today was talking about 'Ready Boost' being an affordable extension to RAM, in this case I could understand the problem as I would think the access to a USB 2.0 thumbdrive would be slower than that to RAM.
    Any help appreciated, but I guess my bottom line is anytime I want to watch video on iTunes, I just pull the USB thumb drive .
    PC Pentium 4   Other OS   Windows Vista Home Premium

    I have the same stuttering video issues with iTunes and Vista. While I have used a thumb drive to transfer files (not Sony) I have not yet messed with Ready boost. I have seen several others complain about the video problem, perhaps they will chime in as well. Unfortunately, your solution doesn't work for me. I pretty much ignore iTunes, waiting for the next version (only god knows when it will be released).
    I do have an external firewire drive connected, I'll disconnect later today and see if that has any affect.

  • ITunes 'stuttering'.

    I have a 27-inch, Mid 2011 iMac and just updated to 10.8.3. I thought this update was supposed to fix 'stuttering' issues in iTunes. I have had a bit of an issue with that but after this latest update, it seems to have gotten much worse. Thoughts?

    I seem to have recently come across this problem too. To my best recollection, it's only ever been these past few days that iTunes has been stuttering – never have in my ~2 years use of this PowerBook have I had the problem before.
    I'm running iTunes 7.0.2, but the odd thing is that 7.0.2 is a relatively old update now. I've been running 7.0.2 for nearly the whole month it's been out without experiencing stuttering, and it's only just been in the past few days that the problem has manifested itself. I'm trying to remember if there was any correlation with the installation of other software, or heavy use of PhotoShop, or something similar – but nope, not to my knowledge. The only other consideration is the size of my library (~25gb), but I haven't added anything to it for a few weeks now.
    The Activity Monitor usually also shows a spike in CPU usage – nearly always to 100% capacity – whenever iTunes stutters, but again I can't correlate the spike with any particular activity or program.

  • HT201335 I want to watch an iTunes rental video on my MacBook Pro but stream the sound to my Airport Express linked speakers.  However re Airplay icon doesn't show up in iTunes when playing the rental video.  Is there a way around that?

    I want to watch an iTunes rental video on my MacBook Pro but AirPlay the audio to my AirPort Express linked speakers.  However the AirPlay icon isn't available when arching the rental video in iTunes.   Is there another way?  Do I need to but an AppleTV?  I don't own a TV, hence why I want to watch on my MacBook Pro.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    With or without an Apple TV you can't send video to one device and audio to another using AirPlay.

  • ITunes Music Videos Skipping in Windows 8.1

    About three iTunes updates ago, I began to have chronic problems with my iTunes music videos crashing on both of my Windows XP computers. I stopped purchasing altogether.  I just bought a new computer with Windows 8.1.  The iTunes videos play, but the quality is not great. I can hear little skips in almost every video, like an old vinyl LP with a few scratches. The same videos play beautifully on my iPod, and I've played music DVDs on my new computer with good results.  I am so disappointed that this new computer didn't completely resolve this problem with iTunes videos.  Any ideas without a lot of hoop jumping?

    Replying to my own post to add that it is not just the sound that skips, but the picture. It seems very random.

Is it possible to get itunes music videos to play or do I need to get new ipod.   It works on my iPad and iPhone, but not through iPod Classic.

    Are these music videos located under Videos on your iPod?  Do it play other regular movies (if you have any on the device)?

  • I need a version of itunes that will work on my powerbook G4?

    I tried the latest version of itunes and my powerbook does not support it.  Love itunes- what version works on older powerbooks?

    Depends the age of the Powerbook, and your operating system.
    Powerbook G4 867 Mhz or higher can run Mac OS X 10.5 to 10.5.8, but do not support Classic when doing so.
    Depending on the age, they may support booting into Mac OS 9 while maintaining Mac OS X 10.5.8.
    This link explains what versions of iTunes work with what Mac OS X versions.
    iTunes for 10.4 & 10.5 is here.
    A newer version for 10.5 only is here.
    Older versions may be found here.

  • ITunes U video content shows in Movies app

    Hi,
    The iPod touch doesn't seem to properly handle iTunes U content. The most notable and annoying aspect of this is the iTunes U videos which are on my iPod. They show up in the "Movies" app alongside my actual (theatrical or self-produced) movie files, and apparently in alphabetical order - so my movies appear in the middle of a series of lecture videos.
    I have probably 50 iTunes U videos and 15 or so normal videos. The iTunes U videos drown out the normal ones when browsing the iPod!
    The iTunes U files do show up correctly in the iTunes U section of the Music app. But I don't want them to appear anywhere outside of the iTunes U section. Can I do this?
    Firmware 3.1.3, iPod touch 32GB 3rd gen

    I had already tried that. iTunes says that it cannot convert the specified file because it is already in the necessary format... or some such thing!
    FWIW: I can share my library and watch the "U" videos on other Macs just fine.
    Thanks for suggestions.

  • Itunes converrts videos for ipod but then thay have no SOUND!!! Help please

    Itunes converrts videos for ipod but then thay have no SOUND!!! Help please
    Just bought it a couple of days ago, and its doing this!!! why doed the videos now both on my ipod and itunes not have sound?

    Your source video file is probably muxed.
    Neither QT Pro or iTunes has the ability to successfully encode a muxed video file with audio. You'll end up with video and no audio.
    You'll need to use some other third-party software to do the conversion. There's a handful of software available. Just search the forums and you'll find many titles mentioned.
    Try MPEG Streamclip.

  • Help on stuttering video after FMS call Stream.get('liveBroadcastStream').play('liveFeedFromFMLE', -

    Hi,
    We recently encountered a very strange issue that we urgently need help:
    With FMS 3.5, we created a new live application according to relevant documentations. Within this application (main.asc), on periodically basis (e.g. 45 seconds), we use Stream.get('liveBroadcastStream').play('liveFeedFromFMLE', -1, -1, true) to (potentially) switch between different live feeds published by different FMLE. All work like charm except one annoying/important issue: sometimes (but not always), after a server-side call of Stream.play, we see severe stuttering/choppy video from flash client player.
    Any help that will lead to the resolution of the problem will be greatly appreciated!
    Some background information:
    1. All testing were done within LAN environment with just a few machines which mean loads were very low; so we can rule out bandwidth insufficiency issue. Also CPU usages were low across all computers involved.
    2. The stuttering and choppyness occurs with the 'liveBroadcastStream', not with the source stream which is 'liveFeedFromFMLE'. In other words, we used flash player to check out the source stream, and it looked fine.
    3. When the video was jerky, the accompanying audio sounded OK.
    4. We tried to set the flash client buffer length to be 15 seconds, and it did not help.
    5. The stuttering occurs immediately after the Stream.play function call.
    6. The described sympton occurs quite often, but not always. We were not able to identify the exact cause. It does not seem to show any easy clue.
    7. In the repro case, we called Stream.get('liveBroadcastStream').play('liveFeedFromFMLE', -1, -1, true)  every 45 seconds with no parameter changes.
    Again, we are urgently waiting for professional help!
    Regards.
    Xiaohai

    Thanks for your info. We are desparate for any help that we can get. We will do as you said, but it is a semi-production scenario and we are not allowed to set up debugging scenarios often.
    We have spent tremendous amount of time trying to flush out the issue with no luck. What really frustrated us is that our application scenario is really simple, and yet it won't work as expected. We have downgraded to FMS 3.0.1 and it performs a bit better than 3.5. We have issue with 3.0.1 too. The stuttering video is still there, but player recovers eventually. That is the best we can get so far. As we investigate more, we become more convinced that FMS's stability is not up to production quality (sorry).
    I simplified our application to the following and it is still problematic (pseudo codes):
    Prerequisite: stream 'liveStream1' and 'liveStream2' published from to FMLE
    FMS server side codes (pseudo codes):
    function onPeriodicalCall ()
            if (application.currentStream == 'liveStream1')
                 applicatin.currentStream = 'liveStream2')
            else
              application.currentStream = 'liveStream1'
            Stream.get('liveBroadCast').play(application.currentStream, -1, -1, true);
    application.onStart = function () {
         setInterval (120, onPeriodicalCall);
    With the above codes, the players shows stuttering video with each .play call. And sometimes, clients even could not play anything. When client can not play anything, we found it correlates to netstream not getting into data start mode (e.g. normally unpublish, stop, publish, start, but sometimes it only gives unpublish stop publish, thus lacking 'start').
