Itunes suddenly detecting but not recognising ipod 5G

Hi
We bought my daughter a new 5g ipod for xmas and all has been working fine until last week. When trying to sync her ipod i got a message saying "itunes has detected an ipod but it could not be identified, please disconnect, then reconnect and try again". I have an ipod 4g and my husband an ipod 1g and these both sync fine. After trying various fixes nothing worked so my husband removed and reinstalled itunes and it worked! The next day we turn on the pc and connect the ipod and now we are getting the same message. My husband reinstalled itunes again but this time it did not work and we are still getting the message. Can anyone help? I have googled this problem and it seems some people think it's an issue with the 5G ipod and Vista, other think it's due to bugs in the latest version of itunes and the 5G (I did update itunes to the latest version a couple of days before this happened).
What can I do? It's still under warranty but the ipod itself works it just won't sync on my pc anymore. We have a small notebook that uses xp and we thought of maybe setting her ipod up on itunes on that but that's probably sidestepping the issue. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I am having the exact same problem so would be grateful to know if you resoved this issue.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes but to no avail.
When as recommended I checked the USB controllers in my device manager the one that says Apple Mobile Device UDB driver had a yellow triangle next to it, I tried to update the driver but it said I already have the correct driver.
the day before this happened I updated my version of Itunes and installed an Ipod Shuffle.
I'm at a loss what to do next!
Thank you

Have an AirPort and a new iPhone 4. When initially loaded, I could see AirPlay from the iPod, in iTunes and from Remote on the iPhone 4. Now, no AirPlay icon in the iPod. Can still access from Remote on the iPhone and from iTunes on my PCs.
    Any ideas much appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do the songs from those playlists show up?
Also, are the songs in the playlist purchased?
Finally, is everything up to date on both computers...

  • Itunes will not recognise ipod nano video in itunes 9.0.2.25

Hi, running windows 7 64 bit and itunes 9.0.2.25. works well with old ipod and ancient shuffle but new ipod video generates 'can detect but not identify ipod'. On an XP machine the ipod works fine with the latest version of itunes.
I've tried the five steps, I've tried staring up with all services disabled and if I do that I can get the ipod detected in windows just fine. Soon as I start itunes services it disappears from windows and creates error as above.
Please any help welcome as otherwise I've bought my wife an engraved bit of metal and plastic for her birthday!

    Ta Charlie!
Okay ... you don't have a p55 chipset, so that rules out one possible hardware/BIOS issue. You don't appear to have the nVidia ECHI USB chipset, so I believe that rules out the trouble with Windows 7 with 4-GB-or-more-RAM not working well with USB drives or devices. (There's a hotfix available from Microsoft for that, but it wouldn't be relevant in this case.)
So I'm thinking it might be a problem with the Apple ipod driver. (The older iPods won't be using it, which would explain the discrepancy between the old and new ipods when it comes to recognition.)
Plug the nano in. Now in your Start menu, right-click "Computer" and select "Manage". Click "Device Manager".
Expand "USB devices". Can you see an entry in there for the Apple iPod driver? If so, right click on that and select "Uninstall". Click OK. (The uninstall may take a while, leave it to its own devices for a while.)
After the driver uninstalls, unplug the nano. (Wait until it has finished saying OK to disconnect on the nano screen, if nanos do that nowadays ... I'm testing this procedure using an older Classic.)
Now plug the nano back in. This should reinstall the driver.
Do you get proper recognition now?

  • IPod is charging and recognised by windows, but not recognised by iTunes.

There was an error message but stupidly I did not read it, and it won't come up again. I've tried restarting my laptop, re-installing iTunes, restarting my iPod and all sorts.
The reason (I think) it stopped working was because I was trying to copy music from my iPod to my iTunes, and windows was not recognising it, so a friend suggested deleting and re installing the driver, which was successful. But when I then went on to iTunes, it came up with the error message saying something about the iPod no longer working with iTunes or something, and now won't recognise the iPod no matter what I seem to try.
Is there anything I can do without deleting all the music and resetting the iPod? Because the whole reason I was trying to do this was to back up the music so I could update to ios 5.1 or whatever it is, without losing all my music which I don't have on iTunes as it's a new laptop.
    Thank you.

    Try here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    I would start with:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    or
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
It will not delete your library.

  • IPod Nano 6th Gen detected but not recognized

Since recently, my IPod is not being recognized by iTunes (11.1.4.62 ). The error says that it is detected but not be identified properly. I went through all the troubleshooting steps including resetting my ipod, re-starting the driver, re-installing iTunes but nothing works. Interestingly, if iTunes is not open, I can see the iPod as a storage device, I can open and browse it. So I assume there is no error with the wire, the iPod itself or the driver. As soon as iTunes gives the above error, it stops being visible as a storage device. How can I fix this?

    Aridra,
Thanks very much for this - I had exactly the same problem; went through the same steps to no avail unitl I read your post.  Similarly, I uninstalled EVERYTHING Apple on my PC and re-installed. Bingo !!  my iPod is now recognised and synched.

  • ITunes 7.1 does not recognise 5G iPod

Apple SOS. Just installed iTunes 7.1, iTunes no longer recognizes when I connect my 5G (30GB) iPod using the Apple USB sync cable supplied with the iPod. Both iTunes and my iPod work fine independently, but nothing happens in iTunes when I connect the iPod using the cable. It worked fine 1 week ago, but now since the installation of iTunes 7.1, nothing !
I have tried several times, using both of the USB ports on my 17' G4 Powerbook (10.4.8) As a result I cannot charge or sync my iPod, so it is now pretty much useless.
Apple needs to rectify this situation asap, but in the meantime I would like to hear from anyone else that has some problem. Is there any solution to this?
    Thx

    17' Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iPod 5G 30GB

    Hi,
Thx for the response. I was aware of these procedures, but they do not help.
I had already tried the first 3 steps before I posted my support SOS, and my OS is right up-to-date.
At the beginning of the procedure I it says to make sure the iPod is fully charge, however this is impossible because nothing happens when it is connected to my Powerbook with the USB sync cable. iTunes or OSX do not recognise it, so it will not charge or sync, and the battery is almost dead now.
Everything worked fine until I installed iTunes 7.1, so there must be a bug in this update. Note, iTunes 7.2 works ok independently of the iPod, and works
    fine in standalone opeation.
Q: What difference does it make if re-install iTunes 7.1 ? Surely the problem is related to this version itself !?
Also, what will happend to my iTunes music Library if I remove the iTunes application in order to re-install it?
    Thx.

  • My findings -- Album art shown in iTunes 7 but not in iPod

Well, after several round of testings, here's my conclusion:
For song in iTunes library, i can change the album art and upload the song to iPod. The album art shows in iPod and stays...however if i decided to change the album art later for the same song by directly dragging the album art to song info box in iPod, the updated album art displays in iTunes BUT not in iPod, in fact NO ALBUM ART is displayed at all...even though how many times i check/uncheck the DISPLAY ALBUM ART box.
The only way to change the album art again is to drag the new album art to the song in my iTunes library and later drag that song again to iPod.
As a summary, it DOES NOT allow me to add or change any album art directy to songs stored in iPod. The only workaround is have the exact copies of songs stored in iTunes library and do auto sync.
For me this is totally not flexible as in order to save hard drive space, i believe most of us will store songs in Ipod and remove them from iTunes library (correct me if i am wrong). And all we can do is wait til the next release of firmware from Apple.........
Hello Apple, r u listening out there!?!?!
    BTW, i am using iTunes 7 and iPod 5G 60GB 1.2 firmware.

phewww. Been going crazy, thinking i waas the only one with this problem. It was never a problem with 6.5.
and yes, we all dont save tracks in the media library. i have never even used it
    So fix ASAP.
