Itunes sync deletes downloaded apps

Getting very frustrated with my new iPad and iOS 5.1. I've tried searching and can't find any assistance. Here's my situation, brand new iPad running iOS 5.1, exising iTunes (updated to the version of the week). I am not set up to use iCloud for anything. Whenever I sync with my desktop iTunes will delete, without any warning, remove any apps that were downloaded directly (over WiFi) to my iPad, removing the app and any data it may have saved.
1. I have reset warnings on my iPad several times, I still don't get any.
2. I have tried "transfer purchases", iTunes never "sees" any purchases and doesn't download them.
3. I have tried a complete wipe and reset as a new iPad.
4. I have tried a complete wipe and restore from a backup.
5. My iPad has not been synced with another computer.
6. I have reset my iPad, rebooted my computer, even changed cables.
7. I only have one Apple ID.
8. I have skipped setting up my Apple ID directly on the iPad, as well as setting it up there first.
If iTunes installs the app itself, then it leaves it alone just fine. It is just apps that it has not installed.
This behavior does not occur with any of my other devices (iPads or iPhones). Just the new one, it is also the only one running 5.1.
Basically, any apps I buy and download on the device, I have to go home, into iTunes, have it check for new purchases, download them. Sync (and watch them get wiped out), then check them in iTunes and sync them back.
Very frustrating to say the least.
I tried calling Apple support. They suggested #4 and #3. Tried both. Neither worked.
I can reproduce this behavior every time.
Has anyone seen this before and know of a way to "fix" it? I have no interest in going to iCloud with my data, I prefer my iOS devices with encrypted backups locally.
Thanks.

Hi Scott,
I have the same problem as yours on my iPad1, and also, just like you, I do not have that problem on my iPhone4, also my wife does not see that behavior on her iPad2.
That said, and although I do not have a true fix, I can show you how I have it setup to make it a little less disrupting as what you are doing now...
on iTunes, in Edit, Preferences, Store, I have an "Automatic Downloads"  checkmark for all 3, Music, Apps & Books so that anything that I buy on my devices are automatically downloaded to my computer.
So when I purchase (via wifi) an app directly on my iPad, or when I download (via wifi) directly on my iPad an app that is on my computer I do the following:
I open iTunes on my PC (the new app that I purchased via wifi is already there).
I plug my iPad to my PC.
iPad shows automatically on iTunes.
I select the "Apps" tab on top of screen (the one after "Summary and "Info").
I have a checkmark under "Synch Apps".
I do not have a checkmark under "Automatically sync new apps" at bottom of apps list column.
I type the name in the search field of the app that I downloaded via wifi to my iPad (or just look manually for it thru the apps list column).
I checkmark it (because it is not checkmarked and it would remove it from our iPad).
Now if I synch, the app is not removed.
Hope I was clear enough...and pls let me know if you find a permanent fix...

  • How to delete downloaded apps in ipod?

Before i upgraded to ios5 version of my ipod touch, i can easily delete downloaded apps by just a long tap 'til the "x" appears on the upper left corner of the apps, but now that it's in ios5, i doesnt work at all. Any tips i highly appreciated. Thanks!

You have a "restrictions" setting in Settings/General/Restrictions where you can set all sorts of restrictions, also whether you can delete apps or not....
Beware: if you set a password on Restrictions, make sure you do not forget this!

Perhaps the reason that your username and password are not recognised is because you have caps lock on.

  • FURIOUS!! - Automatic iPad Sync Deleted All Apps Without Warning

My iPad, 3rd Generation (6.0), is set to wirelessly sync with iTunes (10.7) in Mountain Lion (10.8.2). Today I opened iTunes and was greeted with the a message advising me that the iPad had new apps that were not yet synced back to iTunes. I was in a rush so I declined to sync the new apps. But as soon as I pressed the button, iTunes proceeded to delete all of my apps from the iPad, including all the data associated with those apps (including PDF files with annotations). I attempted to restore from an iTunes backup, but I got nothing back.
    My objections:
    (1) This is seriously unpredictable and harmful behavior in iTunes.
    (2) My iTunes backup utterly failed or was overwritten after I declined to transfer the apps
    (3) This is not a new problem: See http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=889859
    My feelings:
Now I have to spend hours recreating what I had on the iPad. I'm a patient man, and very computer savvy. But this has me wanting to throw my iPad through the window.

    To JimHdk:
Will do. I checked my support options before posting, but they are fairly limited after 90 days. What I really wanted -- which is apparently too much to expect -- is for someone from Apple to engage me on this without my having to pay for additional support. My product is less than 6 months old, but Apple offers  support only out to 90 days. The support tree ends in two places: (1) with my paying for  telephone support or (2) submit my question to the community. That seems like pretty sparse support for a premium product.
Apologies for winding up here, but this is where I was directed by Apple. My hope was that there would be Apple reps trolling these forums with their ear to the ground. But maybe that's too much to hope for.
    To Julian:
Sorry for shouting. Apple gave me no other place to go with my frustration.
What do I want fellow apple users to do? Be warned, I guess.
I now see the fine print under the notice which states:
"If you do not transfer these purchased items to your iTunes library, they wll be removed from the iPad."
It looks like that's exactly what happened. But that's very odd for two reasons:
    (1) I've had most of those apps for quite a while and they've been transferred back to iTunes in previous syncronizations.
    (2) Why should iTunes force delete apps that I've bought and paid for on my iTunes account, but for reasons of my own have chosen not to sync? It seems extreme. And it's a wide open window for this kind of unintended damage.

  • Itunes Sync deletes music on my iphone instead of just adding new content.

Whenever I sync my iphone with itunes it starts to delete the music I have on it already and then start to put it all back on including the new content I wanted on my phone. I just want it to sync new content on my iphone when i plug it in. Any ideas as to what is wrong? Thanks.

See if it shows up in >   Settings > Sounds > Ringtone
Ringtones are only available from the iTunes Store not the App Store.

  • IPhone will not Transfer Purchases, iTunes will not download apps.

    Hey everybody,
My iPhone 3G S and/or copy of iTunes is behaving strangely. I'm able to download apps directly onto my iPhone, but when I attempt to transfer my purchases back to iTunes it begins the transfer and then just stops without any kind of warning or error message. When I try to download copies of my apps directly from iTunes I get the following message:
"There was a problem downloading “[App Name]”. The required disk cannot be found.
Please check that the connection to the network is active and try again."
I've searched around and found a few problems like mine, but nothing exact. A few articles have suggested a work around solution: unplugging all other USB devices while iTunes syncs. I can't really do that in my case because my entire iTunes library is on an external drive (plus it's kind of dumb to have to do that every time).
Does anyone know what I need to do?

You nailed it. I guess I've been putting too much faith in my little USB hub.
I ejected my external drives, unplugged all my USB connections, unplugged my hub from the wall outlet, plugged everything back in, reloaded iTunes, and now I'm good to go!

  • ITunes account not downloading app updates/purchases

    Little background:
Purchased a new iMac and wanted a shared itunes library between all users. Imported my multiple users (2) from two other macs (unibody macbook 13" and older iMac) via migrate assistant. Subsequently have moved my entire libraries to a shared location.
    Heres my problem:
My primary user account will not install apps to my library. The app will download (in iTunes) and will sit in the downloads folder as a temporary file (both for purchases and updates.) Music, TV, and Movies appear to work just fine but apps seem to be the only issue.
Also, this is only happening with one of my two users on the computer. I can log into the other user account, sign in to my iTunes account and download new or update apps, tv, music just fine.
    Any ideas?

Apple needs to apply the same logic they use on the iPhone and iPads to the iTunes. Just prompt me for the iTunes account of the App holder.  If I know it then I should be able to update it. It's a bit annoying to see that there are apps to update and to have to go through your entire families accounts in iTunes to finally find the correct one.

  • HT1491 Can't access iTunes from my Music, no iTunes app on my phone, unable to delete downloaded apps

After I reset my 4s, I am still unable to go to iTunes from my Music (it used to be on the top corner or pop up after using Shazam). I have updated my laptop iTunes & now am in the process of the iPhone update. I have done the apple id check and pretty much looked through every single option on my phone with no luck. I also have added an iPad to the account. When I log onto iTunes via computer it shows all 3 active. I am able to get to iTunes on my iPad.
The apps I have downloaded are unable to be deleted after resetting my phone as well. I can get them to "shake" but there is no red circle to delete the ones like google, facebook, etc. I have to connect to my laptop, remove & sync to get this done. My iPad is able to delete items on the device without connecting to laptop. Apple store told me I had to come in & offered no advice over the phone so if anyone could offer some before I make the drive, it would be much appreciated!!

Yes for iTunes store to work, you have to be on a WiFi netowork (not using Edge).
Now you may not, but most people have WiFi at home now (they setup WiFi in their house for their computers and other devices), so for those, they just join their network (Settings => WiFi)
Also there are free WiFi hotspots out in the world (Panera Bread, McDonalds, Coffee places, bars, etc). One would join them the same way.

  • ITunes 7 deleted "Downloads" folder of music from iTunes and iPod

In iTunes 6 I had iTunes point towards "My Music" folder in windows for my library.
One of the folders in "My Music" was called "Downloads".
NB: the music in "Downloads" is NOT my music downloaded from the iTunes Music Store... it isn't copy protected etc...
Upon upgrading to iTunes 7, i got !'s next to all my 'downloads' music.
I checked the folder and non of the music was there... all completely gone.
I do have a back up of this music, so not all is lost, but the backup is at home and I won't be able to get it for a few weeks.
So in the mean time, I plugged my iPod in, hoping to copy the downloads music off it to use until i could get my backup.
When i plugged my ipod in I got that nice new overview screen of whats on your ipod and it told me there was an update available. Ok thats cool, I'll download it an install it later (so i chose that option...)
As soon as I had done this, the iPod started updating itself and poof... all the downloads are gone of the iPod!!
Ive never had this happen before, usually if there is music on the ipod that isn't in itunes it just leaves it in there and syncs what is in my library.
I then went back to the Downloads folder in My Music to do some investigating. It turns out there were some itunes related files in there. What! iTunes deleted my "Downloads" folder, and replaced it with its own one? Grr...
Unfortunately i didn't write down what those files are, but I believe they were the files for the iPod update.
The update of my ipod actually failed and i can't get it to work... and since that has happened, the downloads folder isn't even there at all anymore. My guess would be that if i could get itunes to do the update again, the folder would reappear with those files again.

HERE IS A way too long diplomatic rant:
This is my third post on this subject. This is a real problem. And it strongly appears (based on what I've been reading from others, plus my own experience) that the new iTunes is the culprit.
But this problems is not limited to a folder named 'Downloads'.[/b.] ITunes, somehow, and for some reason, will delete entire album folders of music in the default 'Music' directory.
Here's what happened to me. Mind you, this involves music I converted to MP3's from CD's I own. I buy about ten-twenty CD's a month, so this is not some Orwellian nightmare affecting merely downloaded songs--purchased or otherwise.
Here is a typical example of what's happening:
    BEFORE iTunes v7 was installed:
-An 'Artist' folder named 'A Perfect Circle' contained the following 'Album' folders: 'Mer De Noms', 'The Thirteenth Step', 'eMotive'
SHORTLY AFTER iTunes 7 (about a month or so ago):
-Perfect Circle folder contained only the eMotive album. The rest were gone: this means not in the trash. Not moved. No where on the HD. Simply zapped.
I've lost MP3 albums from purchased CD's from Bob Marley, Led Zeppellin, Bjork, etc. It has affected at least 50 artist folders. I rip entire albums that I buy: I'm not trying to pass judgement though. I just want the point to be driven home that this bug is big, and it's affecting people who have spent much time and energy legitimately converting their music collections.
Am I missing something? I know I'm not alone in this, but this bug doesn't seem to be getting the attention it deserves from Apple. This is a major screw up. HAS APPLE RELEASED A STATEMENT? Forgive me if it has. But I can't find it. Maybe it's right under my nose?
Anyway, I do have all my music backed up on CD's and DVD's where they can't be corrupted. And all those discs are copied and stored in a remote location, in case of fire. This might seem extreme, but when you've spent a year of your life converting hundreds of albums and tagging them meticulously, you don't take chances. The only problem with this backup method is that my backup is spread out over many, many read-only discs. Moving it back to my hard drive will be laborious.
Can someone tell me if Apple has addressed this? Because I don't want to use iTunes at all if it is going to delete files. And I DON'T care if this is some function I'm not aware of. Any software that would delete files, either mistakingly or through some helpful feature is bad software. Deleting files (w/o even sending it to the Trash!) is one function that ought not be automated, or performed by any application other than the OS itself, under direct control from the user. I've turned off the option that lets iTunes manage and 'organize' my music for me. I can do that myself, and I don't like some of the things it does.
I have a friend in the media, and I'm thinking about issuing a press-release on this bug if further research indicates this is a more pervasive problem that Apple is downplaying. Certainly they are aware of it, as others have written on it here and elsewhere.
Can someone from Apple please contact me? I want to know when it is safe to use this program again. This problem is real, and just because it hasn't affected everyone, doesn't mean it has affected someone.

  • Syncing, deleting, downloading again?

    Hi all
I have a first generation Apple TV (and I am waiting for the 4th gen model).
I purchased some series and movies via AppleTV. Most of the series and movies are not on my Apple TV anymore.
Some series and one movie was once transferred to my Air using quite some space.
    My questions:
    1. How can I download series and movies I once purchased without buying them again?
    2. If I delete the series and movies on my laptop, are they permanently deleted and I would have to buy them again or just on my Mac?
    3. How can I transfer back the series and movies on my Air to AppleTV?
My AppleTV is up to date. So is my iTunes. My Mac Os version is 10.9.5
Thank you all for giving me a hint or two.
    Martin

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I purchased some series and movies via AppleTV. Most of the series and movies are not on my Apple TV anymore.
Yes, this happens automatically if you have synced the Apple TV to the library on your computer.
    1. How can I download series and movies I once purchased without buying them again?
Use the Purchased option from iTunes on your computer.
    2. If I delete the series and movies on my laptop, are they permanently deleted and I would have to buy them again or just on my Mac?
No, you can download them again as mentioned above, although you don't want to delete them if you are syncing with the Apple TV, since they will then also be removed from the Apple TV.
    3. How can I transfer back the series and movies on my Air to AppleTV?
Select then in your sync options for your Apple TV in iTunes.
You may want to take a look at these (old) pages, please note the were written before you could re-download purchased content to your Mac.

  • ITunes Sync deleted my Calendars. How do I restore them on Lion? Everything has changed. I can't find old iCal Calendars on Time Machine.

My calendars on the iPhone did not syncronize with iCloud for other devices (iPad, Mac). So I tried to sync iPhone Calendars with iTunes where I got a warning of duplicate entries.
After the sync my Mac calendars all were gone, on the iPhone, on the Mac. Only the Calendars on iCloud, which are not up to date (!!!) are still available. I tried to restore via TimeMachine but could not find the database for iCal. Everything seems to have changed in OX Lion. Very confusing. Any suggestions?
    Bauklotz

Apple have hidden the user’s Library folder to casual viewers, in an attempt to stop new Mac users screwing their machines up. To access it, in the Finder go to the ‘Go’ menu and hold down the Option (Alt) key; the Library folder will appear as a choice. Navigate to the Calendars folder: back it up and then enter Time Machine to restore an earlier verions.
However, the sync process will probably promptly delete the info, so you will need to go through the process detailed here:
