ITunes sync of contacts (iCloud vs. Window Contacts)

Hi together,
I have a question to iTunes and the sync mechanism. I am using iTunes with my iPhone 4S and at starting with it I imported all my contacts via iTunes. For this I use the settings “Synchronize Contacts with Windows contacts”. This works fine, but all contacts I added later directly at my iPhone are now synchronizes with iCloud and that’s not nice.
At this problem I have two questions and I hope someone here can help me:
How can I change the settings at iTunes / iPhone that all contacts are now stored and synchronized with iCloud?
When I synchronize my contacts with iTunes the software always overwrites my meanwhile changed contacts at the iPhone with the old contacts stored at my Windows contacts folder. How can I change the settings that after synchronization the Windows contacts are updated and not overwritten with the old information?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Thomas

Anthony...
On the iPhone and iPad tap Settings > iCloud. Switch Contacts to off. Same with your MBPro; System Preferences > iCloud. Switfch Contacts off there.
Restart the iOS devices, restart your Mac. Switch Contacts back both devices and the Mac.
See if all the contacts show up.

• Does iTunes sync iPhone contacts by default?

My iPhone 4 died (battery related problem, I think) and all my contact gone with it. So, my question is, if I receive a new iPhone or restored version of my old iPhone, will iTunes restore my contact list?
I've never told iTunes to restore my contacts, so my question is, if that feature is by default on this application.

wjosten wrote:
Because Apple does not want users to rely on an iPhone backup as the sole depository for their contacts...which is good advice. Apple has changed the wording of that support document twice, & IMO it is still poorly worded & I have expressed such. But, I don't write them. Users should be syncing contacts somewhere...many don't.
I shoud add, there is no Apple supported method to access the contents of an iPhone backup.
After looking at the exchange between you guys, I looked also at the Apple support page, where it says at the bottom:
* Your contacts are part of the backup to preserve recent calls and favorites lists. Back up your contacts to a supported personal information manager (PIM), iCloud, or another cloud-based service to avoid any potential contact data loss.
Wow that's clear as mud! So I agree w/wjosten--it's so poorly worded to be incomprehensible. I expect a majority (if not a VAST majority) of users don't regularly sync/backup their iPhones at all, thus their contacts are at risk unless they iCloud them (which is what we do--man that made our lives much simpler since my wife and I share the same Contacts list--changes are pushed and fetched and always in-sync).
Which BTW is another irritant of mine--that Push and Fetch are also poorly described by Apple...

• Is there a way to set an auto sync feature to icloud and windows contacts without using outlook or Windows live messenger just straight to windows contacts?

Need to sync icloud contacts to windows contacts without using outlook or windows live messenger on my pc, i have itunes and icloud fully set up on my pc and i have an ipad2. itunes setting for syncing to windows contacts is not working, nor will it sync to my gmail. I tried to get icloud to sync to my gmail, and thought that i could then sync my gmail to windows contacts, but icloud isn't syncing to gmail either. I configured it correctly, (or at least tried). I was able to copy the csv and all that, and do it manualy, but would like it to sync automatically. Please help.
using itunes new version (9/30/2012), on my windows 7 pc. My ipad2 is running ios 6.

No, you need Outlook.

• Bug in iTunes sync for contacts in address book

iTunes does not sync the address book contacts to the iPhone. It uses a copy that's been stored and saved at another time, but it does not use the current contents of the address book to sync. I am on the latest release of iTunes and the latest software version of OS Lion on a brand new iMac. In the "Info" section of iTunes, when selecting "Sync Address Book Contacts", and "All Contacts" is selected, iTunes should obtain the current copy of the contacts in the address book and dump it onto the iPhone, merging it with the contacts on the iPhone. If there is only 1 contact on the iPhone and 100 contacts in the address book, after the sync procedure, there should be 101 contacts on the iPhone. This should happen regardless of back up copies of the iPhone address book on the Mac.  This process is simple and straight forward but broken and Apple should fix it.

I have the same issue! Latest MacBook, lastest updated Lion OS and iTunes, latest iPhone 4S with updated IOS but old contact list on my iPhone!
I found out even the book, movies are also affected. I have deleted the books and movies and it still shows in the iTunes!
I tried all the steps above and still the same issue re-appear.
****, I even tried to reinstall (factory default) everything but still the same problem!
How the ****, can I get rid of these old files!!!
I feel like smashing the **** macbook, iphone.
Just can't get the contacts right! How are we going to make phone calls without the contacts? Manual key-in! So Stupid!!!!
Any guru out there can advice????
Thanks

• Why different available space amounts with itunes sync - computer v. icloud?

When I sync my 3rd gen iPad to my MBP directly, the bar at the bottom says I have 8.3 GB available.  When I switch it to iCloud sync, that bar change to 5.3 GB available.  The difference is in the Other category (which includes what?).  Is this a problem?  Or why such a difference?

It appears to be a bug in iTunes 11.1.  A quick scan of the forum reveals every second entry is people who can no longer synch after upgrading iTunes.  You could try these items if you want :
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363?viewlocale=en_US
However, I should warn you that I tried them all and I still cannot synch.

• Synching iPhone Contacts through ITunes with Google Contacts.. DUPLICATES

I have an iPhone 3GS and a Windows 7 Computer. I can NOT figure out how to stop the duplication (or triplication +)of contacts from happening every single time i sync my phone to my google contacts.
I don't have outlook - so a few months ago when I got a new computer I set it up so my iTunes syncs my contacts with "Google Contacts". Not all my contacts, but some of them (no rhyme or reason that i can tell) duplicate everytime I sync. I've deleted directly from Google Contacts and also directly from IPhone - neither works. Any suggestions? My contacts lists on both ends are a mess.
Oh - one other thing - I went into iTunes and pressed "configure" in the sync contacts section -- and it does nothing. I get no box that has settings. Is this a bug?

Then you do not want to sync contacts directly with a supported application through iTunes on your computer. You should set up your syncing with google as outlined here:
http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740
To get rid of your duplicates, follow the directions here:
Deselect Sync Contacts under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by selecting Apply, and leave this deselected from here on out or the contacts on your iPhone will be duplicated again.
On your iPhone, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Select your Google account.
Turn Contacts off for over the air syncing. A warning message should be provided indicating this will erase all contacts downloaded from and being kept synchronized with your Google online address book along with an option to save these contacts locally on your iPhone. Decline this prompt.
This will not erase the contacts synced directly with your computer via the iTunes sync process.
Follow this by turning Contacts back on for over the air syncing.
You will be provided a merge prompt, which you want to select.
This will get rid of the duplicates as long as you leave Sync Contacts deselected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. Doing both is not required and does nothing but duplicate the contacts on your iPhone.

• Why can't I sync my contacts from Address Book to iPhone?

I restored my iPhone 4 and now I want to sync all my contacts to my iPhone.
My contacts are in Address Book and iCloud, however i cannot sync my contacts. I ticked Sync Contacts on my iTunes.
Is there any problem?

Syncing contacts in iTunes will not get them to sync with iCloud.  To sync with iCloud on a mac you must be running OS X Lion (10.7.2 or later) and then enable iCloud syncing in the iCloud control panel in System Settings (see http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html).  Also, once you enable iCloud syncing for contacts you should disable iTunes syncing for contacts (by unchecking Sync Contacts on the Info tab of your iTunes sync settings).  Trying to sync with both iCloud and iTunes will result in duplicate contacts.

• TS1314 I have a movie iTunes synced to my phone

iTunes synced a movie from my windows pc to my iPhone that I can't delet. It put it photo albums and I can't delete it. Truer to delete like you do regular photos but it don't have a delete anywhere and I can't find it in iTunes. Please help.

if you remove it from itunes it will also be removed from the appletv.
the appletv is designed to have copies of your content and mirror your itunes library (just like an ipod).
the appletv should not be used as a primary storage device.

• TS4097 we have multiple users in our family and multiple devices all sharing one itunes account.  i think we are all synced to one icloud account and it is a nightmare....contacts lost, text messags showing up on multiple devises etc.  how do we fix this?

We have our family sharing one itunes account.  we have 3 iphones, 2 macbook airs, 2 ipads and 1 mac.  I am not sure how we even got started on the icloud but somehow we did and everything is a mess.  The ipads are showing the text messages, the contacts are all combined, the apps that my duaghter downloads are appearing on all devices.  how do we fix this so contacts are not shared, messages are not shared and apps are not automatically synced to all devises?

You have two different issues going on.  You are getting each other's messages because you are sharing the Same Apple ID for iMessage.  This can be corrected by going to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive on add the devices and doing one of the following:
Either uncheck the email address shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at" on all of your devices; or
If you want to continue to receive iMessages at this email address on one of your devices, on all of the other ones tap the Apple ID at the top, sign out, then sign back in using a different Apple ID (so all devices will be using a different Apple ID for iMessage).  Note: you can continue to share an Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and App stores.  It does not need to be the same as the ID you are using for iMessage, FaceTime and other services.
The second issue is that you are sharing the same iCloud account on your devices.  When you do this any data you sync with the shared iCloud account such as contacts is merged and will appear on all devices connected to the account.  To fix this you both need to have separate iCloud accounts (you can continue to share the same Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and app stores).
First decide which device(s) will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the one(s) that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else that you want to keep on the device(s), save these to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this device, not from iCloud.  The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On [iDevice].  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a separate Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.  Repeat this process for all the devices that you need to migrate to new accounts.
When finished, to un-merge the data in your accounts you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting the other person's contacts from your account, and vice versa).

• ICloud for Windows 8 doesn't sync my contacts and calendar

Hi,
iCloud for Windows 8 doen't want to sync my contacts and calendar with the local Windows 8 programs.
Look at the first line:
What's wrong?
Thanks in advance for your help, and sorry for my bad English!

No, it's "Calendar" from Microsoft Corporation, and "Contacts" from Microsoft Corporation.
They are Windows 8 Modern UI apps, which are installed with Windows 8.1.

• My iCloud for windows is syncing email and notes with my MS Outlook 2013 on windows 8 but NOT contacts and calendar

Dear, I have downloaded and installed iCloud for windows and see that a user has been auto setup in my MS Outlookvia imap. I can now sync email and notes.I cannot sync icloud contacts and calendar with my MS Outlook, can you help me with this?

iCloud hosts the calendars on its server and your various computers read them from there. The protocol for doing this is called CalDAV.
Outlook for Mac has not been equipped with the programming for CalDAV and therefore cannot access iCloud calendars. Outlook for Windows evidently has and can.
This is something only Microsoft can rectify and you could send them feedback suggesting they do this with all convenient speed.
Outlook on a Mac can only access calendars living under 'On My Mac' and these cannot sync with iCloud. iCal can sync with iCloud provided you have 1-.7.2 or higher.
