Itunes syncing on only one computer

Is it just me or is the inability to sync to more than one computer a major mistake? I have had to get a new computer so when I go to sync my touch to update to 4.1 I find out that if I do update to 4.1 itunes will erase everything on my touch. This to me is a big problem. What was apple thinking? I love apple and apple products, but to me they dropped the ball on this. Does anyone know how to avoid the loss of my content?

Yes, I think it's a major mistake. However in a perfect world, no PC ever crashes so you are supposed to have moved all your files nicely over to the new PC...oh, never mind. Your PC hasn't crashed so you don't even NEED a new one.
I'll stop ranting. Is your old PC still around?
If all you have is your ipod, you can transfer itunes store purchases from it to your new PC.

The key is to have the new PC authorized before you plug in your ipod.
Might be best to go into itunes preferences > Device tab and check the box to prevent ipods from auto syncing, too.
If you want to get everything (not just itunes store stuff) off your ipod, you need to buy a 3rd-party ipod manager:

  • Sync to ONLY one computer

I have my iPad and iPhone synced to my iMac via wi-fi.  Works beautifully.  Unfortunately, my Macbook also SEES the devices.  How do I turn of syncing on my Macbook?  I only want wi-fi syncing on ONE computer.  Thanks, Dan

If you don't want to use Firefox Sync, you should deactivate it.
Go to Sync tab within the Options window. At the bottom you will find a link to "Deactivate this device". Click on it and follow the instructions.
This should stop any message from showing up.

Same as you would if you bought a pc; copy everything from your old computer to your new one.  Then you can just sync everything from the new computer, as you did with the old one.

Although I have synced my ipad to only one PC computer I now get the message that it is synced to another computer and only one computer sync is permitted.  I have lots of apps on the ipad and do not want to loose everything by starting fresh with the ipad.  How can I get the ipad to again accept my computer and sync successfully?

can anyone tell me how to restore my itunes library and playlists? After I downloaded mountain lion my library is missing and my devices can be synced to only one library ...the missing one

That .itl file actually is the library -- at least the critical part of it although the library is actually many files and folders.
Try starting iTunes and immediately hold down the option key.  When it asks, guide it to the .itl file.
It's really hard to say without being able to poke around your computer.  Upgrading should not delete the old library, but still it happens to the very, very few which is why we make backups before updating.  If the old library file is gone then so are your playlists.  You can always see if the following is of any use:

  • Syncing contact on one computer and iTunes media (music) on another

I have a desktop computer that serves as the family's itunes music and applications, and video library. I have sync'd my iphone with that computer for over a year. I also have a pc laptop that i use for work that is one of my authorized computers on the same itunes account. This is where my outlook account resides with all of my contacts. I have mobileme but have been reluctant to sync. my iphone (which has alot of contacts) with outlook using itunes because of the many stories i hear about deleting info. Now as I am about to take the leap, it seems I may not be able to sync contacts with my laptop, while continueing to sync the itunes media via my family desktop. I can't believe this is the case, but it is far from clear that i can do this, and all warnings as i start the process appear to indicate that it's going to delete those items i have sync'd from the other computer if i decide to sync. contacts with my laptop. Can i sync. my iphone with some non-itunes content (contacts) with one computer, and also sync. itunes content on a different computer?

Can i sync. my iphone with some non-itunes content (contacts) with one computer, and also sync. itunes content on a different computer?
    Yes.
In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced or manually managed with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first.
Contacts, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks can be synced with the supported applications on multiple computers.
There will be a warning message provided that your iPhone has been synced with an iTunes library on another computer, but if you don't select to transfer any iTunes content from your PC at work - don't select anything under the Music, Podcasts, Video, Applications, and Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your PC at work.

  • An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time

I recently bought a MacBook Pro, and I figured it would be pretty simple to move my iPhone to sync with iTunes on the Mac from iTunes on my pc, afterall it is the same program and both are designed for the iPhone.
I have been successful in getting the Contacts and Calendar to sync, but the Music, Applications, Video and a few other things give me this message when I check the sync box:
"The iPhone is synced with another iTunes library. Do you want to erase the iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."
Obviously, I don't want to erase everything. Actually, I don't care about Music, Videos, Podcasts or Ringtones as I don't have any, but I do care about Photos and Applications. Actually Photos I can reload too, but I don't want to loose the apps I have purchased with the iTunes App Store.
I even tried going back to the PC and unchecking the Sync boxes on it, hoping this might disassociate it from the phone, but now even on that PC I get the same message.
How do I disconnect phone from the old iTunes and be able to sync it to the new iTunes? This should be simple right?

I made an appointment with a Mac Genius and I will say that while it was better than getting to talk to India on a poor quality phone call it was just about as helpful. Sure she was cute and friendly, but I left without my issue resolved and was surprised that I didn't even get a followup from anyone asking about my experience (hence my venting here)
Anyway, I found a solution for my issue here: http://tinyfish.net/2008/07/18/how-to-sync-iphone-with-multiple-computers/
This is a real solution to the issue, and has the benefit that I can do this to as many machines as I need and sync at any of them instead of just one. Hopefully, Apple doesn't delete my response since it truly is the answer to the problem and others might be looking for the same solution.
