ITunes takes 2-3 minutes to write video tags

I'm using the latest iTunes and for a while now, iTunes takes about 2-3 minutes whenever I update the information for a video file. It takes forever to "update tags".
I've defraged my hard drive, no virus scanner slowing it down. Any help?

Same here on my 2.4GHz Core 2 duo 3gb ram iMac...its not the computer problem for any of us just the new itunes is broken i guess
its tv shows though you're right...i find the best thing to do is edit the name (faster with tags) then when you click ok and it finishes, go back and re-edit and change the bulk of the info and it will write the tag fast

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • ITunes takes 10-30 minutes to launch.

Every time I try to launch itunes, it shows up whenever it feels like it. It can take up to 30 minutes sometimes. I only have 1,000 songs and 5 or so playlists. Also, another weird thing that happens is everytime, when it finally does show up, i am required to type in my apple id password to "Sign In To Use This Computer for Automatic Downloads". Every. Single. Time. Both of these problems showed up around the same time. I have the latest version of iTunes. My computer has an i7 processor and 8gigs of ram, so I don't think that is the issue. If anyone could help, or offer suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it; as this is very frustrating. Also, once it's open it runs perfectly.

I also I this problem and untill now none of the above fixes solved my isues!
My itunes takes around 10 to 15 min (with itunes process in process manager) to load!
The strange think is that my system doesn't show any "stress" while opening it, the cpu load is fine (around 0% actually) and system memory is around 50% 60%, that is totally normal in my computer with itunes and chrome open.
Please help me this is very annoing, I takes ages to manage my iphone!
I tried booth lauching in itunes safe mode and start with a new library (shift while opening) the itunes still takes ages to lauch!
    Please help!

  • After update, iTunes takes over 30 minutes to start up

I updated iTunes to 10.6.3.25 a couple of days ago to the latest version, and now it takes over 30 minutes to load.  I click the iTunes icon on my desktop and get the mouse spinner for about 2 seconds, then it disappears.  During that time, I can see in task manager that iTunes.exe using the about 25% of my CPU (i3 550) and over 100,000k of my 8GB of RAM.  After it finally loads, I plug in my iPod and iTunes gives no indication that it sees it at all.  Windows sees it, but iTunes doesn't.  My question is, what can I do to fix this?  I've already went into programs & features and went to changes and hit repair on each of the apple programs I have on my computer and that changed nothing, and I also tried this.
tl;dr iTunes takes forever to load and iPod doesn't show up in iTunes

UPDATE: After having had my iPod plugged in for TWO HOURS, it has finally been detected by iTunes.

  • ITunes Takes Forever (3 Minutes) to Quit

I'm running iTunes 7.5 (19) under Leoopard (10.5.1). I find that iTunes consistently takes between 2-1/2 and 3 minutes to quit (which means that I have to wait until it quits before I can logout).
When I quit the application, the iTunes window closes and any music playing ceases. Then the application goes unresponsive for several minutes before finally quitting.
There is no indication of problems in the log.
The problem is manifest while running without plugins.
The problem is not manifest in a virgin account with an empty iTunes library.

I wouldn't expect iTunes to take any time to do anything if the library is empty; it has nothing to do.
I appears that iTunes is constantly writing the iTunes Library and .xml files to the hard disk while the application runs. As iTunes runs, it keeps track of housekeeping things such as how many times and the last time a song has been played, etc. When iTunes it quit, the application needs to close these open files so that they are in a good state for the next time iTunes it started up.
We have found a significant dependency in iTunes related to opening the application such that it takes a year and a day for it to read the sound files one by one from the hard disk. It appears that iTunes is trying to build an index or database of the sound files, possibly with relation to building links to the album art.
I have not experienced the problem you are having to the same extent, but I find that the saving sequence has clearly increased in time with 7.5. (ie., from inconsequential, to a couple of seconds). In your case, it is in the realm of minutes.
Take a look at the following as possible contributors:
    1) It will take much more time to close if your iTunes library is located on a network attached HD (or wireless network) than if it is on your internal HD or even directly attached HD.
    2) It will take longer to close if your HD is pegged for free space available
    3) It may take longer to write the iTunes Library files depending on the number of sound files in your collection: how many do you have? (Order of magnitude = 100/1,000/10,000 ?)
    4) The bigger your iTunes Library file and .xml file, the longer it will take. My database files are on the order of 10 MB each.
    5) There may be a dependency with the artwork. Do you have a large amount of album art installed manually? (drag/drop/paste)
    6) Does this happen if you revert to iTunes 7.4.2? We found that reverting to 7.4.2 solved the problems with the startup delay
    - Good luck!

  • Why does my iTunes take 3 - 5 minutes to load?

Recently my iTunes is taking forever to load. I have a late 2009 iMac, which still performs well in every other area except starting iTunes. I'm running fully updated Lion OS. My iTunes library is decent sized, but nothing that should take this long, about 20gb of mostly music and a few movies and podcast. I began noticing this a few weeks after I upgraded to Lion, but the first few weeks it worked fine, so I'm not sure if its Lion related at all. Once the program is actually started it performs well and is very responsive. For the first 30 seconds after I start iTunes, my system seems sluggish and bogged down, then it snaps back to normal speed, but iTunes still takes several minutes after that to start.
Anyways, any advice or tips on speeding up iTunes startup time would be great, Thanks.

Solved my problem by reading another thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3191240?tstart=0
Thought I would post the solution in case anyone stumbles over this thread.
After putting ituneshelper.app back in startup items, my itunes starts in about 15 seconds instead of 3 minutes.

  • Connection iPod to computer, iTunes takes about a minute to respond...

Is this normal? After I plug it in, the iTunes song will continue playing usually, but I can't bring the iTunes window up for about 30-1 minute. It's no big deal, but kind of annoying.
My mini didn't do this... Is it just the way this iPod works?
    Thanks.

  • ITunes takes 7 - 10 Minutes to sync songs to iPod

Ever since I installed iTunes 7.1.1 it's been taking ridiculously long to synchronize my library to my 5G iPod. I have already tried restoring it but it didn't seem to work... It doesn't even begin to sync my new songs to my iPod until about 8 minutes has passed. I have an 80GB and about 55 GB used up already. Could the problem have to do with how much space I have left on my iPod??
Please Respond to this message if you know what's occuring.

Is that acceptable? with 9,000 records I would think that is fast.

  • Preview in iTunes takes 5 min to load

Our iTunes U site hasn't gone public yet, but we're uploading a lot of content to test things out. I've noticed with some videos (with what seems to be the same compression settings) if you click on the preview icon within iTunes U, it literally takes 3-5 minutes for the video to appear, during which time there's a "loading" message. The video eventually shows up, and if you hit "Get Movie", there's no problem downloading it and watching it on your own machine.
Many of the videos that don't work have the following settings (from Quicktime movie inspector):
    H.264 Decoder, 320 x 240, Millions
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 32.000 kHz
There's some files with these same properties that do work, though, and if you re-compress these using the iPod setting in Quicktime, you don't get the delay.
Strangely enough, I've never had any problems with videos compressed with:
    Sorenson Video 3 Decompressor, 320 x 240, Millions+
MPEG Layer 3, Mono, 48.000 kHz
But, of course, these can't be transferred to your iPod.
The folks who made these videos claim that their process is consistent, and there should be no difference with the files. For what it's worth, they use Squeeze to do their compression.
I'm really stumped on this, and it's been throwing a wrench in our progress on the site (which needs to launch in about a month.) Any help would be wonderful.
    Thanks,
    Quinn

Actually, after some feedback from Apple and some testing it does look like iTunes U and iTunes does support progresive download fast start. With QuickTime 2.1, Apple introduced the Fast Start movie, which is a movie with the header at the start of the file. It works because the movie atom is stored at the beginning of the file. So, QuickTime knows how to interpret the movie sample data even before it arrives, and because the movie data is intelligently interleaved with respect to display time.
When the bandwidth of a connection meets or exceeds the data rate of the movie, a well-formed QuickTime movie file can play as it downloads. This kind of progressive download, or Fast Start movie, provides the same user experience as real-time streaming.
Originally, a special tool was needed to process the move for fast start. However, making fast start movies is now the default move of QuickTime. However, if you do any editing in QuickTime Player, even simple things like changing annotations, the header gets moved to the back of the file again, and fast start no longer works. When this happens, you ned to re-flatten the move, either by doing a Save As of the file from QuickTime Player.
There is a freeware utility that can be used to flatten movie (mov and mp4):
    http://www.qtbridge.com/lillipot/lillipot.html
We use have used Sorenson Squeeze, which appears to not have GUI option to enable/disable progressive download fast start.
Most other compression tools let you set the progressive download, fast start option.
So, for example, on our iTunes U site we have progressive download fast start video's that play directly from iTunes U without issues.
    http://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/utah.edu.1413595482.014207570 81.1419303557?i=1534614695
But, we also have video that were encoded with Sorenson Squeeze or other tools without the fast start option. Thye do not play properly from iTunes U.
In regards to previewing & downloading media is possible, if the media is progresive download fast start, but the interface could be modified to make it more obvious.
IMHO, iTunes should better optimized to handle playback of non-fast start media, no raindbow beachball and hog resources for iTunes will trying to load media.

  • ITunes takes two Quits to actually quit

This is a kind of annoying new trait since upgrading to Leopard. I can choose Quit from either the menu or the Dock and iTunes just ignores me the first time. If I do it twice, it instantly quits. This isn't some time out value I'm just not being patient for since i've let it wait as long as 5 minutes. It just simply ignores the first Quit command.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

just chiming in to report similar activity on my new macbook pro 2.4, itunes 7.6.1.
i have been using my powerbook 12" for years with itunes and never had this problem. now i get a brand new shiny macbook pro and itunes has slowed down to a crawl.
my library is only 3050 songs (compared to 12040 songs on my powermac g4/733, which runs itunes on tiger fine, btw).
itunes takes approx 1 minute to start and then as soon as i quit, i get the beachball. there is no option to click quit again, just have to wait several (2-3) minutes for it to terminate the process. of course i can force quit, but then none of my changes will be saved to the library.
waiting for a fix. thanks for reading,

  • IPod video gives itunes the can't read or write error

I bought my iPod Video through the apple store shortly before Xmas. Since i was sepnding the holidays with my GF, she uses ugh windows. I formatted my ipod with windows, and got some songs on it and started using it.
When I came back, around 3 weeks ago, I cleared it to get it working in my powermac, but it gave me this read-write error, so i made a system restore and re-populated it with all my music, video's, contact info and calendar stuff.
Two days ago i got some new music, and (i also installed the dreaded 1.1 update), I tried to update my ipod with iTunes and i got this error in itunes saying it couldnt read or write to my ipod. Weird, I thought, but i restored it to factory settings. When I tried to import some music, it gave me the same error. Now I cant put any music at all!!!
What could be causing this problem?

I have continuously over the last 6 months struggled with syncing my iphone and ipod with itunes  The app continually crashes during the picture import.  AND by the way it takes 10-15 minutes before it even attempts to import photos.  The screen says importing photoes but doesnt try to optimize or anything for 10 minutes.  I have a 3gs with 16Gb so its not a cheap phone.  I have 10Gb free.  I have 6600 photoes.  This is very frustrating and undermines my confidence in your products.  My ipod is an ipod 4 with 16Gb also.  It does the exact same thing to it.  The last time, I had to import photoes a few at the time and with it taking 10-15 minutes each time for 6600 photos it is a long frustrating process.  But it will import every photo a few at a time.  The error message is just that itunes has stopped working.  no hint as to why. AND of course, my phone is out of use for the entire time.  You guys must not want to believe ur phones are a necessary tool...or maybe you dont want the consumer to believe it is.  I have tried to find solutions on your website as well as through other 3rd party communities.  Ultimately they were of no use.  I stumbled onto my solution by accident since Im a bit of a computer geek...a semi-geek.

I have this issue too, I went into my Windows event viewer. (should have looked at this a year ago when this started)
    it said this
Faulting application name: iTunes.exe, version: 11.0.2.26, time stamp: 0x51253247

basically whenever I try to sync my ipod touch 4G 64GB it crashes iTunes when it begins the pictures. if im lucky ill get 4-5 on there before it stops responding. its not my system or anything im running win7x64 8GB DDR3 ram (Corsair XMS3) AMD FX Eight core processor.
It is silly that iTunes cannot add pictures to apple devices. it shatters whatever incline I may have to buy apple products. knda like the Airport Extreem router my dad bought the new firmware, caused my router to not function... why release firmware that breaks a product. -_- <-- off topic but still

I recently updated my ITines software to version10 and since the update it doesn't recognise my Iphone/  It also takes 2 - 3 minutes from clicking the icon to firing up the software.
Is anyone else having this problem and how was it resolved?
    Thanks

Actually, Chris, I found that page yesterday on my own doing a search, before I wrote my post.  After your instructions didn't work, I found that page and tried deleting the iAdcore.dll and that did not work.  When I tried to open it said it didn't have the iAdcore and could not be opened.  There was no QTMovieWin there to delete.  I again uninstalled everything in the order listed on this new page, because there were 7 things to uninstall (not 5 as your last page suggested).  I found that I had iCloud so that was deleted in the proper order.  Did not have MobileMe on the computer.  Also deleted Apple Application support, which wasn't on your list either.  I restarted the computer.  I looked for any files on drive C program files as indicated, and did not find any of those files.  I went to the iTunes page and downloaded the latest version yet again (maybe the 5th time?).  And I got the same notice:
"The  iTunes Library.itl cannot be found or created.  The default location for this file is in the iTunes folder in the music folder."
I went to that iTunes folder in the music folder there are a number of iTunes library folders and none of the open except one.  The ones that don't open give me the same dialogue box as above.  The last folder opens to a page of codes, I guess that's what it is.  Gobbeldy gook to me.  But that folder is listed at the top in the URL as itTunes Library.xml.  I don't see any .itl.  Is that the folder I need?  And how do I get that??
I don't know if that last paragraph is significant, but I thought I'd include just in case it is.
BTW, can I just download an older version of iTunes?  And how can I find it?  I still have the old version on my old computer which is at home.  Not sure how to get it from that to this one.
Thanks for hanging in there with me.  Perhaps there is someone else who could help if you can't figure it out.
