ITunes tantrum - xml update, lost songs, data1.cab errors

Hi All,
In the last couple of days my iTunes has thrown a real tantrum.
When I switched on iTunes on the PC two days ago, it didn't come up straight away, instead it said it was updating the XML. This went on for ages, so thinking it was just one of those wonky start-ups, I hit cancel and loaded it again - the result half my songs were missing - about 3500 gone.
I had a back-up of the xml & library so I brought those in and ran iTunes again - this time when it did its xml update I let it finish.
The result was that all the songs added in the last month were gone - so I re-added them.
The next day I opened it up and the new songs were gone. (It's a 40gb iPod photo, with about 30gb used).
I decided to update iTunes from v6 to v7 to see if that helped.
The upload kept failing (sulking about the iTunes & Quicktime .cab files), but after repeated tries it eventually went through.
I was able to use it that night and re-loaded most of the songs.
I tried to open iTunes this morning and it tells me that I haven't got Quicktime v7.1.3 installed only v7.1 - however I have checked and I do have v7.1.3 installed.
I've tried to re-download the 34mb iTunes 7 setup exe from the Apple site and all it sends is an uncertified file of varying size between 70 & 700mb, which can't run anyway.
I tried loading the original iTunes software from the disk, but it's kicked out straight away due to a later version being in place.
Please help, I've tried all the options my tiny brain can offer.
Thanks,
Paul

  • Data1.cab error

I cannot install Acrobat Pro ver 6.0 as I keep getting a data1.cab error. It says the cab is corrupt. I have tried to extract the files and indeed there is a corrupt file in the cab. Can I download a cab file for this version or is there something else going on???
    Rob

It should install on XP. Apparently you do have a corrupt file. As long as you registered AA6 with Adobe, they may be able to help you. They will not discuss the issue if you have not registered or prove you purchased the product.

  • Itunes update lost songs but not library

    Hi
I recently updated to Itunes 7.3 and lost most of my song files in the process. Is it a bug??? Am I the only one this happened to?
My Itunes library shows all the pI am the only one to whom it happened laylists and song names but the files are lost except for those that were recently added. They appear with an exclamation mark. I haven't plugged my ipod onto the computer since then, so I still have a back up of the old library.
Now the question is, how can I restore the files back from the ipod without having Itunes reset it?
    thanks for help

You get exclamation marks or dead tracks because iTunes can’t find the file. This can happen for a number of reasons:
The song file or a folder in its path was renamed
The song file or the folder it is in has been moved
The song file has been deleted
The device containing the song files e.g. external drive is not accessible.
So you need to be sure your fles really have been deleted and not just now where iTunes thinks they should be.
If they have gone this sevoneer post should help recover them from your iPod:

If you remove items with exclamation marks (dead tracks) from your library you will find a script here:

You need itunesremovenotfound - download the EXE version

  • ITunes won't update the songs on my iPod

I have a 20G iPod, purchased in Nov. 2004. For the last several months, the iTunes software has been slow to recognize the iPod and start automatically updating songs (it often took several minutes), but until recently it eventually recognized the iPod and went ahead with the update. Around October, the iPod started to freeze frequently when connected to iTunes, but I was able to solve the problem by resetting it. After resetting, the songs on the iPod would update successfully.
But when I tried to update the iPod after letting it sit unused from mid-December to mid-January, the real trouble started. I tried to do an automatic update and the iPod froze. I reset it and tried again, but the same thing happened. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and updated the iPod software, but the problem didn't go away. So, I restored the iPod.
At first, this seemed to make things worse. The iPod wasn't recognized by Windows. I solved this problem, but I don't remember exactly how...I managed to get Windows to recognize the iPod somehow, then had to follow the instructions in the Apple website's article entitled "iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes" in order to get iTunes to recognize the iPod.
I thought this had solved the problem -- the iPod connected to iTunes and appeared to be updating normally. But when it said that it was finished updating, only a couple of Podcasts had been transferred to the iPod. None of my songs were there, and most of of the Podcasts weren't either. I tried updating again and noticed that although it said it was updating, the songs just went from being qued (with the little grey round waiting-to-be-transferred symbol to the left of the song title) straight to supposedly being on the iPod. None of the songs ever had the little orange round in-the-process-of-transferring symbol next to them.
I tried clearing all of the songs in iTunes and then adding them into the library again, but that didn't do anything. I don't know what else to try. I'm very, very frustrated at this point. Does anyone else have some experience with a problem like this?

Thank you both for the suggestions.
I plugged the iPod into my computer this afternoon and opened iTunes. iTunes gave me an error that I haven’t seen before – it said “iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod “Kathleen’s”. Use the iPod software updater application to restore the iPod to factory settings.” I ignored the advice, closed iTunes, and tried the fix suggested in the page linked to by b noir (that is, reassigning the drive letter). I then opened iTunes again, and I got the same message. I then tried resetting the iPod, which was saying “Do Not Disconnect” continuously, unplugging it, and restarting the computer.
When the computer started up again, I plugged in the iPod, then opened iTunes. I then let it sit there and “think” for a few minutes. The iPod said “Do Not Disconnect”, and after a while iTunes came up with an error message. The window was called “Device Timeout”, and it said “The requested operation on \Device\Harddisk1\DR3 was not completed before the time-out period expired.” Cancel, try again, and continue were my options. I chose cancel. Then iTunes gave me the “iTunes cannot read the contents...restore the iPod” message again. So, I restored the iPod, figuring the combination of reassigning the drive letter and restoring the unit might do the trick. After restoration, iTunes recognized the iPod again (that is, it didn’t give me an error message), and started pretending to update the songs on it, but none of the songs actually went onto the unit (i.e., I had the same problem as before).
I’m not sure how to try Mary Beth’s suggested fix, as I haven’t got any playlists except the ones automatically generated by iTunes (90s music, Top 25 played, etc). Is there anything else I can try?

  • Trying to Load PRE8 on Win7 but i get a data1.cab error

    Hi everyone
I bought a bundle Premier and Photoshop 8 through education department.
i have tried to load both on my laptop.  Photoshop worked but Premier Elements 8 keeps getting an error saying - Error 1335. the cabinet file 'Data1.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used.  This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.
I have loaded it on to a computer with Xp and it worked.  I then removed it and tried again on Win7 and the error appeared again. I have sent it back and they sent me a new one and the same error has happened.
I am not lost.  Any suggestions?
    I have a HP Pavillion DV7 operating WIN7 32 bit.
    Thanks
    amanda

    Amanda,
The CAB file is a "cabinet file," and contains much of the code, that is being installed in an archived, special container. This error message usually occurs, when the installation DVD is damaged, scratched, or has fingerprints on it. For some reason, the installer program cannot read it from the DVD.
As one is allowed to make a backup copy of the program installation discs, I would use a DVD copy utility, like the free ImgBurn and Copy your DVD. Often, this will get you a better copy of the DVD, should the damage be slight. I have had several installation DVD's that could not be read by the installation program, that worked perfectly by just making a Copy.
Next, one can Copy the full contents of the DVD to the computer. Many do this to the Desktop, and install from there. Again, doing the Copy (though to the HDD here) seems to work for many.
Last, contact Adobe and ask for replacement media, as it seems that yours is damaged.
Good luck, and hope that one of those works for you,
    Hunt

  • Dowloads result incomplete Data1.Cab error

Upon unZip, the error is Data1.cab 238ee536 should be Data1.Cab 29b71a25
I have not been able to Sync for days, since the appl cannot be removed to istall either a download or a cd version!

    Afternoon,
I have had this error on a hand full of WXP SP3 workstations running 1.6 update 16. I am not a smart person, but I do know how to search. I found a fix a tried on a similiar error.
On one of my problem children I did the following.
As Admin verify rpc service is started.
    from a CMD prompt
    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 initpki.dll
    regsvr32 dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
I believe the initpki.dll took a few to respond. After that I restarted and tried the install on the problem child again. Success. Since then I have been going back to my other problem children. I try the install without the fix and have not had a issue, YET, installing update 16. It's PFM.

  • C:\Window\Installer\Data1.cab error

I tried to install Adobe Acrobat to be able to edit PDF documents.  At about the 62% point in the installation of the program an error message appeared and halted the install.  The message had this..."C:\Windows\Installer\Data1.cab".  How do I fix this?

  • After iTunes 7.6 update:  QuickTime failed to initialize (error -2096

"QuickTime failed to initialize (error -2096).
QuickTime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes."
After upgrading to iTunes 7.6 this morning, I get this error when trying to run iTunes or Quicktime. I was using the Apple Updater. I got no errors when running the installer.
I downloaded the 7.6 setup file and attempted to repair the install. I still receive the same error.
There is an article indicating that turning off Compatibility mode would resolve this issue, but Compatibility mode is not turned on for iTues or QuickTime.
The same issue is discussed in the Quicktime forum, here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6400305
I am running on Windows 2003.
Note I had iTunes open earlier today, and it was working fine. It was only when I upgraded to 7.6 (I think I was at 7.4 before. It was definetly 7.something).

Thanks for this discussion and I hope Apple fixes this soon. It took me forever but installing QT 7.2 and installing the less recent itunes update from filehippo finally resolved it for me. Of course the reason it took me forever was that every time I reinstalled itunes, I was using the default setting that was updating QT & Apple also (in hindsight it sounds really dumb, but no one had mentioned that).
This is the first itunes update that has ever gone wrong for me - I've used itunes for 5 yrs (my 1st ipod was a 2nd gen touch wheel). I wonder if some MS developers went to work at Apple to exact revenge...?

  • Itunes and OS updates lost movies in Video app

I updated both iTunes and OS for our iPad1, now lost movies tab in Video app.
in Itunes, the device shows all 27 files, but when trying to access them from the pad, all I have is a TV shows tab, no movies tab.

  • ITunes Hanging after updating few songs

Just bought a new 80GB and have been trying transfer songs from my library. My library is in an external 200 GB hard disk. I upgraded to iTunes 7.2. Run XP
Now i Tunes hangs regularly after updating songs ranging 20 to 200 or so songs. I have over 7k songs and find it a big trouble to force shut iTunes each time.
Have tried resotring with same result.
Any solutions I would be mighty obliged.

I do not have shuffle turned on. I do have one track that without the check. I thought that this check meant skip when shuffling. When I look at the options for the track (Get Info/Options) "Skip when shuffling" is not checked. iTunes does not quit on this song.

  • ITunes doesn't open, lost song list

My iTunes doesn't open for some reason, so I downloaded a new iTunes which works, but doesn't have anything showing on it. My music is on an external HD. How do I get the songs to appear on the iTunes again?
many thanks for anyone that knows!

    gta129,
Do you have iTunesHelper set to start up when you login? To check if it's in the list of login items:
    1. Open System Preferences.
    2. Click the Accounts pane.
    3. Select your user.
    4. Click the Login Items tab.
    5. See if iTunes Helper is listed here.
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.

  • ITunes stopping sync at every song with an error..

Got my iPhone back from repairs today and updated it to 5.0.1 and iTunes to the newest version as well, tried syncing all my music back on and EVERY TIME it finds a song which isn't on my HDD anymore or has an error it stops syncing.. what iTunes used to do was just skip them, and list them at the end.
This is really inconvienent as I'm syncing over 3000 songs onto my iPhone, so having to press 'Sync' after every 100 or so songs it gets really frustrating.. I was hoping I'd be able to just leave it syncing over night but guessing I'm gonna have to stay awake till it's done now, lol.
    Any help fixing this?
    Cheers.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
