ITunes temporarily unavailable when I try to purchase a song or log out.

On both my macbook and my iPhone, I am unable to purchase and download a song. I originally tried to open the iTunes store on my phone but it was crashing. When I resolved the issue, it would allow me purchase the song, and it would appear in my downloads, then instantly disappear, without downloading. When I tried purchasing the song on my Macbook, it started saying "iTunes temporarily unavailable". I've reset my macbook and my iPhone multiple times, and even updated iTunes, and have tried logging out, but then I received the same error message "iTunes is temporarily unavailable".

See if the issue resolves itself in a few days. Or have you already waited a few days?

Get on a computer with iTunes. Click on your email in the iTunes Store, and hit account. Change billing info to None as card type, make sure billing address is correct, and hit done. It will then save, and allow you to make your purchases.

Apparently there is an issue if you try to make a purchase which is more than the amount from a gift card. It should charge the balance to your stored credit or debit card. It doesn't and displays this error instead. This issue is known by Apple but no fix date was given.

You don't have the typical symptoms that I associate the following issue with (normally the error kicks in just when folks visit the Store), but just in case try gn_id's suggestion from the following post:

Try:
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers
OpenDNS IP Addresses
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem

If the amount of the purchase is close to $21.07, then you need to take into account taxes may be added.
If you go beyond the credit from a gift card the balance will be billed to your credit card account.

Well no, not from my experience. Last night, with a balance of about $42 in the iTunes store (several gift cards this summer) I purchased a 4.99 app - credit card was charged, not the balance in the iTunes store.

Hi mterry1723, one solution that might be worth trying is this:
- Close iTunes, if it's open
- Open Safari and got to 'Preferences'
- Select 'Security' on the top
- Untick all the security options in the menu
- Click the 'Show Cookies' button and look for all the 'apple' entries in the left-hand column.
- Highlight them (select them collectively) and press 'Remove'
- Now open iTunes and buy the song as usual.
- You may be asked to do the same security process as before, so do as asked.
- Hopefully, the security check will now have accepted your answers and start downloading the song as normal.
Remember to re-tick all the required security options you had just un-ticked in Safari preferences. You don't need to bother about opening the cookies again.
I hope this has worked for you and my profoundest apologies if it has not. Worth a go, though!

You could check to see if there are any other stores that you can buy the song from. How about the artist's website? I've bought a couple of MP3s and even CDs from Australian artist's websites.

For some reason this worked for me. I went into my account and changed my first name, maybe it causes itunes to reset. What ever it does my itunes works now.

Sounds like you have abn expired credit card linked o yoru accopunt.
View your iTunes account payment info and select None for the CC.
You may need to first add a valid card number before you can remove it.
