ITunes thinks I have a 4th Generation iPod when it really is a nano
Hey, so I downloaded itunes 7.0.1 and the plugged in my iPod Nano (1st generation). Then it says: "Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod "My iPod" because your iPod software is too old. Go to Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Update to get the latest iPod software update". So I went to the summary tab and first off I notice that the picture of what my iPod is looks a whole lot more like a 4th generation iPod than a iPod nano (it used to show a iPod Nano). Can any help me with why my iTunes is acting up?

Thanks! But I actually figured it out! Right after I said something about the driver, I went into device mangager. Sure enough even though it did not show up as a drive letter the device manager said is was installed and working.
So I deleted the device out of device manager. Restarted and plugged it in. Although I go some weird error. It found the IPOD and now Itunes sees it.
I believe that killing the process would have done the same thing as you stated.

I have a 4th generation ipod classic (click wheel) and it's giving me a sad ipod error as well as not mounting in itunes... I hear a clicking inside when it is connected to power but nothing is working. Help!
You won't believe this but a friend of mine (who happens to be an Apple Genius) told me to put a towel or cloth on a sturdy countertop (I know this may sound weird) but hold the selct button (in the center) and menu part of the wheel at the same time until an Apple logo comes up on the screen and then quickly turn the ipod on it's side and wack it on the counter where the towel is so as not to damage anything cosmetically. It seems the clicking is the hard drive reader is stuck and this dislodges it. Mine works now (no clicking) and all seems to be well again. Who knew?

I have a 4th generation iPod touch which was working perfectly until I downloaded ios5 and now it won't connect to my wi-fi - all other devices working correctly. I tried just about everything and finally brought my Ipod touch to the apple store. The tech installed ios 4.3.5 but still no WIFI. He recommended a $149 exchange - not really a bad deal with a new battery and 90 day warranty, but I thought I'd try again.
The "solution" was bizarre. On YouTube was a fix involving taking the motherboard out and heating the wifi components with a heat gun.
I did not like that idea, but another involved turning it off, putting it in the freezer for five minutes and restarting. It worked! I must admit the fix does not work reliably, so I may still go for the exchange. Still, I am now convinced that it is a hardware problem. i remember back in the old days, TV repairmen sprayed a suspected bad resistor with Freon. The chilled component would work long enough to identify what needed replacement. Perhaps something similar is happening here.
For anyone wanting to try this, I found it more convenient to place the back of my ipod on a frozen cold pack until the wifi is restored. It seems to happen when condensation forms on the face. I used a towel to wipe off the moisture so as not to add to the problem. -

I have a 4th generation 8GB iPod nano and it will not progress past the blank screen with the white apple logo on it. I have charged it fully and tried to restart it by pressing and holding the menu buttons for 3-7 seconds. The devices screen will turn off and then, after a couple of seconds, the screen with the Apple logo will appear again. This screen will remain lit until the iPod runs out of battery again. I have tried plugging it into my Macbook Pro. I have the newest versions of iTunes software and OS X Mavericks. The computer will not recognize the iPod and the device will not show up in the computers list of devices. I looked up the troubleshooting for the device and found out how to put the device into disk mode. I followed the intructions but the iPod would not go into disk mode. The screen still displayed the Apple logo and would not set into disk mode. I fear that I have run out of options. I have come to this forum in hopes that I can still salvage my device. If there is anything I can do, please loet me know so I can try it. If not, I am affraid I will have to go to an Apple store of authorized retailer and have it repaired or replaced.
Try manually connecting the device to your PC in Disk Mode and then restoring it iTunes.

Putting iPod devices with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode
If necessary, verify that your iPod has a Click Wheel.
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it is charged.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least six seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will should say "Do not disconnect".
If you are having difficulty putting your iPod into Disk Mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center. If you are still unable to put your iPod into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

Connect the device to the computer and iTunes will ask you to update iOS to the most recent version. Settings > General > Software Update appears on iOS 5 and 6 -

ITunes 9.0.2 vs 4th Generation iPod
I installed iTunes 9.0.2 on my iMac, and now my 4th Gen iPod has gone insane.
First time I plugged in for a sync, the iPod got stuck during the sync process and iTunes got stuck as well, requiring a force quit. Every time I have tried to sync since, anywhere from 2 to 25 items get synced before eventually ending up with both iPod and iTunes frozen. Typically, I can't even restart the system until the iPod is unplugged, and even after being unplugged, the iPod just sits there (doing something because it gets quite warm and runs down the battery) with the "do not disconnect" display.
Have tried rebooting the iMac, restoring the iPod multiple times, and still they just can't seem to get along.
I tried using Time Machine to go back to the previous version of iTunes to see if the problem is with the iTunes update or with the iPod itself. Can't properly roll the application back though.
Anyone have any ideas? Is there any way to download and install the previous version of iTunes so I can get an idea if the problem is with iTunes or with my iPod?colin mack wrote:

you could try if this user tip helps:
+1) Quit iTunes.+
+2) Delete iTunes from your Applications folder.+
+3) Go to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. Delete or rename the "iTunes Library" file.+
+4) Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and look for the backup of your old pre-9 library; it should be dated at about the time you first ran iTunes 9. Copy it back out to the ~/Music/iTunes folder, and rename it to "iTunes Library".+
+6) Go to <http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_21> and download iTunes 8.2.1. The page says it's for G3, but the Read Me file says it'll run on G4, G5, and Intel too. Open the diskimage and run the installer.+
+You should now be able to run iTunes 8.2.1 again.+
+And your iTunes will restore to before you upgraded and you won't lose anything.+

I have tried to restart my ipod. Shutting it down completely and restarting it.
I have reset my network connections. My internet is working because I am able to get on here on my computer.

My friend cant remember the password. Can I change it from inside the iPod settings or something?
Your friend could only have changed it if they had your original passcode - you have to be able to enter the current passcode to change it to a new one. Once you restore it now, I would then change it and NOT give it out to people.
P.S. if you have a backup from when it still had your passcode on it, just restore from that backup and it should set the passcode back to what you had.
Without that backup, you will have to restore as new, and set everything up again from scratch.
