ITunes Throttles CPU to 99% Usage

Whenever I start iTunes, my new Gateway desktop's fan roars and blows hot air like a jet engine. Opening the Task Manager reveals that the iTunes process is running at 99%.
This continues until all podcasts have been updated. Then iTunes drops down to a 1% or 2% of CPU usage.
I am running a Intel Core Duo 2.8 GHz with Windows XP Media Center. My internet connection runs through an anonymizer proxy server.
Anyone have thoughts on what is going wrong with my software?

The problem is that Apple just don't know how to
write Windows software.
I won't argue with you there, although I'd add that from what I've seen, they don't know how to write very good Mac software either.
The issue is simply Apple assinging too high a task
priority to the update process and it overridges
everything else.
But I will argue with you there, because this is simply untrue. For example, my PC does not exhibit this problem. No CPU choking whatsoever. Not during playback, not while updating podcasts, zilch.
I suspect that your CPU is being stuck high because iTunes is going into a loop state when some other process is blocking access to some file, like, say, an anti-virus process would do.
One thing iTunes (stupidly) seems to do a whole lot is to continually close and reopen files. For certain overzealous file monitoring and scanning programs (anti-virus, anti-malware, etc), closing a file means that the anti-virus program will come along and open it in read mode, in order to scan it for bad things. If iTunes then comes along and tries to open it again in write mode, iTunes would get halted by the OS, until the anti-virus releases the file and write mode can be granted.
The only solution I know of would be to find the offending scanning program and temporarily disable it, or at least make it wait a bit before trying to scan recently closed files. Or switch to a less aggressive program.
I also add that we have seen this exact sort of issue in relation to certain anti-virus programs and iTunes, such as the "iTunes takes forever to shut down" bug, which is caused by an anti-virus program interfering with iTunes trying to write out the database after being closed. I've also seen it with other programs, such as uTorrent, which in some cases had issues with Google Desktop, since uTorrent had a "feature" that caused it to cycle all open files to closed and open again, every 5 minutes or so. Google Desktop would see the file close and attempt to index it, which honked up uTorrent trying to reopen it, which gave a nasty error and shutdown of the torrent download. It's just a bad idea for programs, in general, to close files when they know they are going to open them again shortly, and programs that do it tend to have relationship issues with other programs. iTunes has this issue a lot.

  • ITunes causing CPU spikes

Ever since I upgraded to the most recent version of iTunes, my laptop has gone extremely slow when iTunes is running (i'm now using winamp). The CPU usage spikes from 80% up to 95-100%.
My music is stored on an external hard drive, the laptop is an Inspiron 9100 (Pentium 4, 3.20GHz, 1024MB RAM) and had no problems whatsoever before upgrading.
I did a complete wipe of my laptop a couple of days ago and all other applications are running much faster, but i've downloaded iTunes again and the same problem occurs. I've also tried downgrading the version to see if that helps but it doesn't.
Anyone suggest anything or experience similar?

I have to agree that there is some major problem with iTunes - I'm totally unimpressed having never used it before and just having bought my first ipod.
    Windows XP SP2, 1.6 Ghz, 2Gb RAM
Insert any music CD and RIP via iTunes = 100% CPU utilization
Insert any music CD and RIP via Windows Media Player = 40% CPU utilization
So I need a dedicated machine to support the ripping of my music? What a joke.

  • Get CPU and memory usage

    Hi!
I would like to know if there is any way of getting system CPU and memory usage using Java code.

I want to get the system CPU and memory usage using the performance monitor dll, the perfctrs.dll, but access this data using Java language. Then you should create wrapper dll between your java code and perfctrs.dll and convert data from format of dll to format of your java code.
So, that is next question - how to create wrapper dll, how to deal with or how perfctrs.dll works?

  • Firefox keeps freezing and using 50% cpu and memory usage shoots up most of the time it's when there's an auto update of anything addon, plugin or ff!

Firefox keeps freezing and using 50% cpu and memory usage shoots up real fast and carries on going till it uses up all there is left. Most of the time it's when there's an auto update of anything addon, plugin or ff but not just neccessarily then! I find out it's happened when there's been an update after i restart and an extra webpage comes up with the particular addon/plugin/ff update. I have to restart most of time because nothing sorts it out. I'm using windows xp with the latest update of ff 13.0.1 it's not this version because it's been happening for a while. And it never started when i added a particular addon or plugin or when i added a new app to my pc either. Any idea as to what this may be or how i'd sort it out?
    Cheers

  • Throttle CPU utilization during software updates

Are there any settings to throttle CPU Utilization during software update installation on client computers?  I am deploying updates to test systems currently and noticed that the CPU utilization was being pegged at 100% during the install.  After
the updates installed, the system returned to normal.

Also note that ultimately, it is the Windows Update Agent that is installing the update(s) so it's not really within ConfigMgr's scope of control and would happen no matter what method you chose to use to update these systems with Windows Updates which
leads me to believe these systems have perf issues to begin with. Are they VMs?

  • Z10 - High CPU and Battery Usage with BBM

I recently updated my Z10 (UK and EE Carrier) to 10.2.1.3062 and every day or so I am getting very high CPU and Battery Usage with BBM running in the background.
I have never used BBM and have no active or past conversations or contacts.
This morning, it used around 60% battery in under 3 hours, with 95% of that time sat at 'idle' in my pocket.
Sometimes its after I have connected it to my car stereo (charging and streaming music via USB) on an Alpine CDA-117Ri, but I dont think thats a cause.

My computer is a Dell with 4bg RAM. It works perfect, with internet and several programs runing cpu usage goes upt to 60% top. normaly runs at 155 top, but as soon as I start itunes it goes to 100% and remains there making almost imposible to use the computer, even loading files to the library takes several minutes and trying to conect my ipod is almost5 imposible. I sude this pc before with itunes and ipod with no problmes. I appreciate any help on this

I'm having the same issue for more than a month.  When it's not open it's draing the cpu making the pc run slow and when open the cpu is maxxed at 100% that the I can barely use the computer and can't sync.  And I only use it to back up and sync.  Just downloaded the new version today thinking it would help but it didn't.  Interesting to see if anyone has any answers.

  • CPU high system usage

My laptop regularly slows way down and gets super choppy, and the Activity Monitor shows high system percentage during, usually up into the 70s. This happens when I try to watch videos online, play games, or even load too many pages at once. I have to close the tab or quit the application to get it going again. This occurs with all applications (Word, Excel, games, etc). Even after I install updates and restart I get the same problem. I've tried eliminating tabs and applications up at once, tried clearing space and uninstalling applications - same issue.

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.
    Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
    high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, or a voltage sensor
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.
Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or sensor.
If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
    External display
Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models may cause this issue. If applicable, test by disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

  • WVC80N software throttles CPU to 100%

    Hello,
Just recently purchased the WVC80N and installed the video monitoring software.
Can someone tell me why this software is throttling the CPU usage to 100%?
It causes my computer to slowdown when I have this software opened.  Any fix for this?
Thank you very much for your help.

Does the computer operate normally if you use the camera WVC80N without utility? As well as you can try the following steps:
    # With Camera utility running on the Computer right click on the Task Bar and select “Task Manager” from the popup menu.
    # In the box there you will be able to see camera utility running.. Right click on that program and select “Go to Process” option from the menu…
    # It will take you to the Processes tab where you will be able to see the usage of the utility then once again right click over that and select “Set Priority” option and select it as Normal…
    After doing, check the status…

  • High CPU and Memory Usage

    Hi
I have CPU usage on 100%. If i dont play games just surfing on internet its like 15-30%. But when i start game like GTA IV it goes to 100%.
I have HP P6 2490eo and Windows 10 Build 9926. I have almost 200Gt free space on my C Drive. And this problem started about 3 days ago. I havent done virus software full check, but i think my pc does it automatically. And i have done "not full" test wih Windows Defender. With that i mean like fast test
Could it be W10? or is my CPU broken?
    Thanks For Help

    Late98, welcome to the forum.
I haven't used Windows 10.  However, I believe that your problem is caused by it.  I suggest running Windows Update if it is still available.  Also, if you haven't done so, you should install any patches that are available for the game.  The game is old enough that it shouldn't be causing problems for the components in your computer.
