ITunes through AX via Ethernet (not wireless) won't work

I cannot seem to play music through my AirPort Express (from an iMac G5) unless I join it's wireless network. The AX and the iMac are wired to the same Ethernet network, but I the AX is accessible through iTunes only if I select the AX's wireless network. Shouldn't I be able to play music from iTunes through the AX over Ethernet?

Yes you can.
If your "wired network" already has a router on it, the best solution is to disable the router built into the Airport Express (which is currently blocking Airtunes access to the Express via its ethernet port).
To do this - run the Airport Admin Utility, select to view the configuration of the Express, and click on the Network tab. Uncheck the box next to "Distribute IP addreses". Update settings to the Airport Express. Finally (very important) restart any computers that were previously connected wirelessly to the Airport Express.
That's it!

  • How to access the hard drive in my Time Capsule via ethernet, not wireless

I have a new Netgear 802.11ac router with ethernet ports. I also have an older (4 years old) Time Capsule that I replaced with the new Netgear router. My iPhoto library was recently corrupted (long story there). I don't have a backup except on my Time Capsule. How do I access the Time Capsule's hard drive over ethernet so that I can copy the iPhoto Library off of it and onto my Thunderbolt external hard drive? It's the only chance I have to save years of photos (my iPhoto library is 258 Gb large). I don't want to do this wirelessly. I've tried using ethernet cable from the TC to my Macbook Pro and to one of the ethernet ports on the Netgear router, but to no avail. I'm sure it's got to be simple but I've almost given up trying different configurations.

Plug the TC directly into the netgear by ethernet.
Then do a factory reset. This will not harm your existing backups in any way.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Connect to the TC by wireless.. this is just to do the setup..
Put the TC in bridge mode.
The TC will now appear as a client in the Netgear and should be accessible.. if not there is something else going on.. the Netgear may not be working properly with the TC. It happens.
I am not sure what equipment you have.. but if you have a thunderbolt connected hard drive.. how are you then connecting by ethernet to the Netgear.. as I understand it, unless your hard disk has a thunderbolt passthough port.. and you have tested and found the ethernet does still work with the hard disk in the chain.
There is no reason you cannot do it direct to the TC if you have enough ports. But the TC should be reset as above so it is in router mode. That is the only way you can connect to it as otherwise it is bridged.

  • Airport Extreme wont pass internet through via ethernet OR wireless ...

I have an iMac in my house that can receive internet flawlessly when plugged directly into my ethernet jack in the wall (connected to my router). I can fwd (share) that through airport to my computers in my detached garage.
I have a spare AExtreme i plugged into the ethernet wall connector and then to the iMac and internet pages wouldn't load nor would wifi airport work when joined to that AE network.
My routers firmware is on the latest edition so i dont think that's it. This AE has been sitting in the box for months so maybe its software/firmware is out of date? how do i update AE firmware?
Any clues as to whats my issue?

I am running into the same problem.
My setup was working fine until a few days ago when I noticed the flashing amber.
    My setup is/was:
    iMac 2GHz Intel Core2Duo
    OS X 10.5.2
    Airport Extreme Gigabit
Comcast Cable: Modem to AE via ethernet - AE to iMac via Ethernet - AE wireless to powerbooks.
(This setup was working fine for the last 2 months when i bought the AE - I was not using Airport on the imac since i was connecting via ethernet.
Now using that setup, I get a green light on the AE, Network status via System Pref all seem OK, but cannot connect.
Right now, I can only connect directly via ethernet to my modem. I turned on the iMac Airport, it recognized the AE and downloaded a firmware update. But this did not change the situation. I did do a reset a couple of times, as well as just left the AE off all day.
Not sure what to do next. I am currently using internet sharing sparingly in the house via iMac airport.

  • My Canon MX 922 does not scan. My printer is connected via cable. Wireless doesn't work either.

My Canon MX 922 does not scan. My printer is connected via cable. Wireless doesn't work either.  I get an error message with multiple suggestions but none of them apply to my situation.
I am so dissatisfied with this printer.  I'm sorry I got it from Amazon because now it is a hassle to return it.  I will never buy another Canon.
The printer menus are confusing.  I hate using it.  I loved my previous Canon which finally stopped working after many years, that's why I purchased a newer Canon model.  Never again.  Stick with cameras.
    Marcy Hotz

This note won't be as angry and frustrated as the last one...
Because I still had my old printer drivers and other applications on my hard drive, I think the application was trying to connect with the old printer.  I deleted all the old stuff.
I also had several scanning applications on my drive which just confused me.
When I used the actual Canon MX922 application, I was able to scan but could only save as JPG, TIF or BMP (and one more, I forget which).  So I did some research on the Canon site and found out how to save documents as PDF files using the Canon IJ Scan Utility.
It works now.  So I'm satisfied, will keep this maching.  I just had to take some time, sit down and focus on the problem.

  • Can you use Time Capsule as a print server for printers connected via Ethernet or wirelessly?

Can you use Time Capsule as a print server for printers connected via Ethernet or wirelessly?
I know that it works marvelous for printers connected via USB, but I'd like to know if you can use it as a more general print server.

No, you can't, but what do you expect to gain by doing so?
The main advantage of the print server is to provide multi-user network access to a printer that typically only supports a single connection. Since, by definition, your printer already has a network connection and can be used by multiple users.

  • Mac Sleep Timer (through 'Energy Saver' in System Preferences) won't work

    Hello,
    I have a MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009) running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3,
and it has been installed with the latest software updates possible.
(The latest update is the 'Security Update 2010-003')
Previously I was using Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 on my MacBook,
and I can vaguely remember the timed computer sleep through Energy Saver would work.
That is, when the counter's time matches the amount of time I specified (e.g. 10 minutes), the computer enters sleep mode and displays a pulsing power light.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard I can barely remember the scheduled computer sleep will work as I don't really notice how it sleeps / I will shut down my MacBook before I go to bed.
    ==========
However, last night I was really tired and slept in front of my MacBook unconsciously.
When I woke up, I found that my MacBook didn't display a pulsing power light but a continuously-growing power light.
I tapped the trackpad and the display turned on, so I knew that my MacBook didn't go to sleep a whole night.
*What that means is that the Sleep Timer (through 'Energy Saver' in System Preferences) won't work.*
But the timed display sleep DOES work.
    ==========
After spending a whole day Googling,
I found that there are plenty of people suffering the same problem as me, although their Macs and OSs vary.
I also found an official support page from Apple concerning the related issue:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
I tried the following methods but still can't resolve the problem:
_- boot my MacBook in safe mode_
_- use the 'Disk Utility' to repair Disk Permissions through booting my MacBook from the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installation DVD_
_- reset NVRAM (Intel-based) (as PRAM is used by PowerPC-based Macs)_
_- reset SMC (System Management Controller)_
NONE of the above-mentioned methods can resolve the problem.
Althought I am sure that the Spotlight isn't indexing the hard drive, and I just start my computer and do nothing and wait for the scheduled computer sleep, the scheduled computer sleep just won't work.
In the other Mac forum, I saw someone suggest installing an application called PleaseSleep:
    http://www.dragonone.com/products/macosx/pleasesleep/
    It works.
But I really want to find out what caused this problem as this is a function shipped with Mac which is expected to work normally.
What's more, Apple is claiming to be a green Apple, right?

    ==========
Looking forward to your replies! Thanks in advance!

Found this discussion by googling "com.apple.systempreferencescouldn't find any matches"...
One month ago I bought a brand new Macbook Pro 13", and after a couple of weeks I realized it wasn't sleeping on its own when it should, per the system preferences. (I did sleep when I chose "Sleep" in the menus or closed it... It just wouldn't sleep on its own, while open.) What was extra frustrating was that it was intermittent... It would sleep on its own maybe 1/3 of the time, but other times it would NEVER go to sleep. I deleted PowerManagement.plist, reset the SMC, etc... No luck.
I took it to the "geniuses" at the Apple Store, and the guy took all of five minutes trying to diagnose the problem. When my MBP wouldn't sleep on its own, he promptly replaced it with a new one. That was nice, but I actually would have preferred that he diagnosed and fixed it. (I think the store was so swamped with people coming in for service that day that they were doing anything they could to close cases and get customers out of there ASAP.)
Now, sitting here with my 48-hour-old MBP, I still have the problem. The other one was so new that I had barely put anything on it yet. The only applications I had put on it were MS Office for Mac 2011, Firefox, Chrome, and Adobe Flash Player. I've put Office and Flash Player on this one, but not yet Firefox or Chrome. That's it. No other customization or fancy business.
I looked into the Console just now, and I see the "Couldn'tfind any matches" entry popping up again and again. The last three seemed to pop upright around the time when my MBP should have gone to sleep on its own, but not down to the second, so it's hard to definitively point at that and say it's it for sure.
    They need to fix this!!

  • Connect via ethernet but wireless for internet

I don't know why, but my apple tv seems to have forgotten how to connect to the internet and I can't make it remember, lol. Now I will stress, this used to work, and I don't know why it suddenly doesn't work anymore...
Basically I have wireless set up at home for the internet. However, I connect to my apple tv via direct ethernet cable between my imac and the apple tv itself. I have set up internet sharing in preferences to share my airport connection over ethernet, which my apple tv used to be able to use ok to connect to the itunes store/you tube, etc. However, it now can't. I had some trouble with it this morning where it wouldn't connect to the ethernet network at all, although it now does. However, it no longer uses the iMac as it's router and I can't seem to figure out why. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

  • IMac to Time Capsule via Ethernet and wireless to MacBook

Hi, here was my previous situation:
MacBook connected wirelessly to TC for Time Machine. TC was not linked directly to router, but for extending the network.
Now I have a new iMac which I connected via Ethernet to the TC to use for Time Machine and external storage for iTunes. That works fine, however...
The TC is no longer part of the wireless network, so my MacBook can not connect any longer.
Is there anybody who can help with this? Tx very much in advance and best regards, Marc Dierens

If someone comes across this post, any help would be apprciated. i have the same issue. The time capsule is attached by ethernet to cable modem. The time machine is also connected by ethernet cable to my G5. The time capsule shows up in airport utility. I also have internet and mail. The Time capsule network is also seen by my wifes macbook pro and she has internet.
However, the time capsule does not show up in my sidebar or on my desktop and it does not show up as an option as the backup disk for time machine - in fact no disks show up.
    Help,

  • Connecting to Time Capsule via Ethernet AND wireless

I have connectivity through an Ethernet network to which my Time Capsule is connected. I connect wireless to TC, but another Mac which is out of wireless range -but still in the same Ethernet network,- cannot connect to TC via ethernet. Is there a way to have access to TC both wireless and via ethernet?
    Thanks
    Nilde

Hello Nadjia. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is there a way to have access to TC both wireless and via ethernet?
Yes, the TC supports both wireless and Ethernet clients simultaneously. Let's double-check the Built-in Ethernet settings on the Mac that you are trying to connect via Ethernet.
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that a Built-in Ethernet option exists. If it does not, click "+" to create one. (Note: If you are unable to create a Built-in Ethernet configuration, the Ethernet card in your computer either doesn't exist or it is not recognized.)
o Verify that Built-in Ethernet is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
    Advanced > TCP/IP tab
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
    o Configure IPv6: Off
    Advanced > DNS tab
o Verify that your ISP's DNS server(s) appear. If they do not, click "+" add them.
    Advanced > Proxies tab
    o Configure Proxies: Manually
o Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    o Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
o Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
o Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)
    Ethernet tab
    o Configure: Automatically

  • Still stream via AirPlay/iTunes if wired via ethernet?

I want to wire my AppleTV (third gen) to my Airport Extreme via Ethernet so that streaming from my MacBook Pro (which acts as media server) will stream faster. (The MacBook Pro is also wired to Airport Extreme via Ethernet.) Will I still be able to stream to my AppleTV via other MacBooks and/or iOS devices on my network that aren't hardwired to the Airport Extreme but access the same wifi network from my Airport Extreme?

Actually the title says AirPlay and wired, not Wifi, but that's ok.
I understand completely the four different connections you mention, believe me. I'm just trying to understand if I can still stream to my AppleTV if I connect to the Ethernet port. Other posts have suggested that the wifi on AppleTV is turned off if Ethernet is connected. And I'm not clear if streaming thru iTunes/Airplay only happens through a wifi connection. Or if it really just works through your local network regardless of how the devices connect to it (Wifi, Ethernet, Airplay, etc.)
Apple doesn't explain this clearly -- rightfully so, since they want it to just work and not focus on the backend of HOW it works. But I'm unclear in this particular situation.

  • HT202157 My Apple TV will not update and it is connected via ether not wireless

I have an earlier version Apple TV and I have tried to update it several times using several methods.  I am connected to the internet via ether and not wireless and teh signal is good. I can stream without any issues ever.  the update is downloaded fine but not installed.  I get a failure to update message.  I have tried to updat normally, restore, reset, etc...... I have no more ideas.

Welcome to the Apple Community Bro.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
        1.    Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
        2.    Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
        3.    Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
        4.    Open iTunes.
        5.    Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

  • AirPort Express via ethernet cable/Wireless.

I have an iMac upstairs, and want to stream music to my HI-Fi downstairs. My new AirPort Express has a green light and is found via Airport Utility on the iMac when connected to my modem (BT HomeHub, downstairs)) via ethernet cable. But once unplugged from the modem so I can use it near the Hi-Fi it is not found via wireless, and has a flashing amber light. I only want to stream music from iMac to Hi-Fi. I set it up to join the existing network - the guy in the Apple store assured me I didn't need to be connected by ethernet to the modem, that it would work via WiFi. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks to edex67 for providing the info that the Home Hub will work with WPA/WPA2 Personal security.
Please locate the Express temporarily in the same room or an adjacent room as the Home Hub.
Perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express to get everything back to a known state as follows:
    Pull the Express from power
    Wait a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Express
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and make sure that you are connected to Apple Network xxxxxx. No password is required.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6
Click on the AirPort Express and then click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a device name to the Express, device password, and adjust Time Zone Settings. The settings should look like this:
Next, click the Wireless tab located next to the Base Station tab. Adjust settings as follows:
Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network (You might have to hold down the option key on the Mac while you click on the selection box to see the "Join" setting appear)
Wireless Network Name = Name of the Home Hub Network
Enter a check mark next to Allow Ethernet Clients if you want to enable the Ethernet port
    Wireless Security = WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password = Home Hub wireless network password
    Verify Password
Click the Update button at the lower right
Close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the configuration has been stored on the Express
Wait 45-60 seconds for a green light
Move the Express to the desired location and power it back up, connect speakers, etc.

  • No constant speed when backing up to TC via Ethernet or wireless

    Hi,
I finally gave in and made an ethernet connection between tc and mbp. I disabled the airport on my mbp and I started time machine for the initial 110 GB backup (parallels vm is excluded). Whar I have expected from this connection is a nice steady flow of data. Instead my activity monitor shows different transfer speeds as low as 500 KB/s up to 12.3 MB/s. But the graph is not a line with some small bumps. It looks more like a printout of a heart beat monitor. Is there anything I can do?
I have had the same problem when I tried to do that job wireless, it was just another scale from somewhere around 10 KB/S up to 6.1 MB/s. How comes?

Sounds like you are connecting the Mac and the Time Capsule to an existing network. Have you tried connecting the Mac via Ethernet to one of the LAN ports (not the WAN port) of the Time Capsule? If that works, then chances are that your existing switch is problematic. Perhaps your existing switch doesn't support gigabit?

  • Airport Express ; Airtunes via ethernet not working...

    Hi there,
I have a problem with my airport and I can't find any solution online...I explain. I have an airport express (version 7.5.2) connected to my network on ethernet. The airport is connected to a router in bridge mode.
When I want to listen music with my laptop on Wifi it work perfectly but I can't make my desktop computer, which is also connected to the router via ethernet, detect the speaker with Airlay and I can't find why !
I already tried to disable firewall of course but no luck...
The only possible cause I see is that perhaps IPV6 is needed to make it work ??
    Any explanation ?
    Thks

Your laptop presumably is connecting via Wifi directly to the Airport Express.  From the perspective of the AE, it is on the LAN side.  Your AE is connected via eithernet to the rest of your network.  From the perspective of the AE, this is on the WAN side.
Use Airport Utility to check the settings of the AE.
    1) Select the Airport Express Device
    2) Click Manual Setup
    3) From the icons across the top, click "Music"
    4) Is the "Enable Airplay over WAN" checkbox checked?  I'm guessing probably not.  Click that checkbox and update the AE (it will restart).  You should then be able to see it from the WAN/ethernet side.

  • Mail works via ethernet NOT via airport

my several email accounts send/receive just fine when I am connected via Ethernet connection but the same setup does not function when I am connected to the same network via Airpot
