Itunes, Time Capsule and apple TV oh my

So currently i have a MBP 13" i just got a G4 Dual 1.25 to run as a Itunes server in my basement.
Here is my thought process so hopefully someone can help out.
I am either going to get an airport extreme anda USB drive or a Time Capsule not sure which yet but the principle is the same it will just come down to the deal i find.
I want to load all my music on the USB drive/Time capsule as well as TV shows/movies from itunes or vidoe files i already have(Converted to mp4)
So i will have both computers connect to the itunes library and everything should be great there correct each should be able to see all the media.
Here is the questions now:
The G4 is going to be used to serve up airtunes as well through the house and depending on the mac announcment today i migh tget an apple tv as well. this should be ok right?
next itunes question we will do most of the mangement from the MBP so if i add a song to the itunes library from the MBP does the G4 Itunes automatically find it or does it need to be resync somehow? hopefully that makes sense?
Second question if i sync my/my wifes iphone to the MBP do we get the ituens library as well?
Hopefully all this makes sense.
thanks

so the Drive conected to the TC is essentially just there if you need it.
the drive (A) connected to the TC (or extreme) would hold your main library and would be accessed by both machines over the network.
however, a drive connected to a TC (or extreme) cannot be backed up using time machine. same goes for the TC's internal drive.
therefore my suggestion to periodically connect the drive to your Mac and use one of the apps above to backup drive A (main drive) to drive B.
you could of course connect drive A to the Mac, then use time machine to back it up to the TC. but, time machine is scheduled to run hourly backups and i feel it just isn't practical for your intended purpose.
kind of like what i do right now got an external that i connect to the MBP and then use time machine to back it up twice a week.
i don't think it is smart to have TM back up your system twice a week only. by default, TM runs hourly (but the frequency can be adjusted by way of 3rd party tools) and it might not be able to catch the file you deleted in between backups but it is just that file you need to restore.
my recommendation to you would be this setup:
(a) get a TC for time machine backups of your Macs over the network and two USB drives for your iTunes library (one main and one backup ). USB drives are fairly cheap these days but you would be entrusting your precious media files to them.
follow this link for a choice of reliable external drives: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/.
(b) connect USB drive A to the TC and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from the MBP to drive A using the finder.
(c) on both Mac, launch iTunes *while pressing option* on your keyboard. when prompted, click on +choose library+ and navigate to the iTunes folder on drive A. remember, only one Mac @ a time can access the library !
(d) every sunday (or whatever), disconnect drive A from the TC and hook it to your MBP. also hook drive B to the MBP and use either CCC or Chronosync to do incremental backups from A to B.
(e) reconnect drive A to the TC.
be sure drive A is mounted on the desktop of either Mac before launching iTunes. you can have the drive mount automatically @ startup by adding it to your login items via system preferences > accounts > login items.

  • Time Capsule and Apple TV

Question 1. I know apple tv can not directly stream from time capsule, but if I have my iTunes library stored on my time capsule can it be streamed via my MacBook pro to apple tv?
Question 2. If I connect time capsule and apple tv to my Wifi modem via Ethernet will it be the fastest option for streaming?

but if I have my iTunes library stored on my time capsule can it be streamed via my MacBook pro to apple tv?
Yes. But, if you move your iTunes library to the Time Capsule drive, have you thought about a possibly troubling fact?..... Your "original" library is now on the Time Capsule drive......and you have no backup when...not if...the Time Capsule drive has a problem.
In other words, if you move the iTunes library to the Time Capsule, how will you backup that important data?
A better plan might be to add an external FireWire or USB drive and connect that directly to your MacBook Pro. Move the iTunes library to the external drive. Then Time Machine will backup your MacBook and the external drive.
Then you have "originals" on one drive....and backups on another, so your data is safe when a drive acts up.
Question 2. If I connect time capsule and apple tv to my Wifi modem via Ethernet will it be the fastest option for streaming?
Yes, probably at least 3-5 times faster than wireless.

  • Time Capsule and Apple Tv Question regarding iTunes

(Sorry if this has been asked) I wanted to know if you could set up the time capsule as basically a centralized itunes server and connect to it from multiple apple tv's at the same time to stream music to different rooms( 3 rooms at most) if not will this work one stream at a time?

If you go into File, Preferences, and click ADVANCED, you will see a checkbox that says
Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library.
    You want to uncheck this.
If you have your library on an external drive, and you want to keep the files there, you uncheck that box and it wont copy the files to your hard drive, just link to them.
In my case, I had my iTunes library on my Macbook. I copied all 20g over to my Time Capsule by dragging the folder in it's entirety to the TC. Then on my Macbook pro i clicked the startup icon and held down OPTION. This asked if I cwanted to create a new library or open another. I chose open another, navigated to the Time Capsule, and it worked perfectly.
THere will of course now be syncing issues between my music. I use my Macbook as my purchase and portable library, so I will now have to either completely copy the directory once a day/week etc or i'll have to export any new songs/music i buy from iTunes to a disc and then import into the new library. Also wont keep my play lists in sync. But that's a smallish issue for ME.

  • TS3972 How can I access the files(movies, music, etc) in my Apple Time Capsule(4th Gen) from my Apple TV(3rd Gen). This is very frustrating Apple has not provided a basic feature, and me buying the Time Capsule and Apple TV is an complete waste of bucks.

I have an Apple TV (3rd Gen) and Apple Time Capsule (4th Gen). How can I access Movies and Music stored in the Time Capsule from Apple TV. This is very  n't give frustrating that Apple doesn't give their customers with an straight forward access to their customers in between their own products. Iam repenting that buying these products is completely waste of bucks. Appreciate your help...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Time Capsule is clearly announced as a router with a hard drive to make backups, not to store anything and share it with your Apple TV.
To access to movies and music from the Time Capsule, note that the Apple TV can only access to them if they are stored in your iTunes library, so you will have to put your movies and music into iTunes to access to them, and then, put your iTunes library on the Time Capsule in order to access to your data from there

  • Time capsule and Apple TV2 ?

Is it possible to use my Time capsule as itunes-server. So that i can stream movies directly to my Apple TV2 ?

Perhaps I'm not understanding your question correctly.
You have the ability to move your current iTunes library to the Time Capsule and then point iTunes on your computer to the new library location.
But,  if you did this...you would have no backups of your valuable movies, music and media.
Can you please clarify regarding your proposed setup?

  • External HD attached to time capsule and apple TV

I just got a used apple TV 40GB and I have a 500 GB HD attached to my time capsule. Please anybody tell me how to "adapt" this external hard drive ( attached to my TC) to work with apple TV.... I guess there a way to store your itunes library to this hard drive AND sync it to apple TV because the HD is already attached to TC?....

AppleTv relies on iTunes to sync or stream media to it.
You can store media files on the Time Capsule attached HD, add them to your iTunes library (change Preferences so files are only referenced by iTunes), and then iTunes will make them available to AppleTV. Obviously anything synced will be on AppleTV at any time, but files for streaming will require iTunes to be running.
AppleTV cannot access the Time Capsuledrive or attached HD directly itself - iTunes does the donkey work and just gives AppleTv a list of files it can sync or stream.
While it would be more flexible to allow AppleTv to access network storage directly, it has not been designed to work that way, and is tightly integrated with iTunes.

  • ITunes, Time Capsule and AirPort Express?

    Hi,
I'm planning on getting a Time Capsule to store all my CDs and my digital music one location.
Does anyone have any experience with these things?
I have a MacBook Pro with "only" a 100GB drive.
I want to "rip" all my CDs to iTunes, store them in a secondary library on the Time Capsule, then stream the music back to iTunes on my MacBook Pro and through the AirPort Express at my audio system. I'd prefer to store the music as aiff. Is the Time Capsule/AirPort-technology fast enough for this?
Another question; if a song is stored in iTunes as aiff and then sent to a iPod (3rd gen. nano), is it automatically converted to mp4 or is still aiff on the iPod?
    Best regards,
    Martin Markvoll

    Hi Martin,
what a co-incidence - i just bought an IMAC and also have the thought of archiving all my CD's (about 1000) on some kind of harddisc-server, and then be able to access this archive via my Imac (wirelessly), and stream the music to my Hifi system and feed it into my Digital/Analog Converter. Do you think the time capsule wld be ideal for the function of storing/archiving and streaming to the hifi system..? I guess I also need a seperate "Airport Express", as it has an optical- digital output into my Digital/Analog converter...
Thanks for your thoughts and kind regards from Singapore !

  • Time capsule and apple care?

I bought a time capsule 2 months ago when I moved knowing I would buy a macbook, which I just ordered the other day.
I noticed on the time capsule page that apple care for the mac covers the time capsule. Will it still cover it even though I bought the time capsule before I bought the macbook?

call em and ask...but I doubt it.

  • Time Capsule and iTV

I am stationed in Germany and have a Time Capsule that we are using for our router. Recently I purchased an iTV so we can watch American TV and other netflix type media. The problem is that most will not work without a US based IP address. others have recommended hot spot sheild and others that will provide a US based IP address. I can download the program to my iMac or Pro but the iTV is run through the TV. How do I set up the program on the Time Capsule?

sorry the time capsule is a 3T, am getting the solid green status light  i have internet but no wi-fi must be a setting i missed in airport. The Mac OS X , 3T time capsule, and apple TV are a day or two out of the box. Want to network and back up to  the two iPhones and a PC

  • I recently purchased a time capsule and thought I would put my itunes on it as an external drive as my mac book air only has 120gb. However I can not be connected to the internet and the TC at the same time in order to download the files to the TC. Help?

I recently purchased a Time Capsule and put my iTunes library on there so that I wasn't using up my hard drive space. Only 120gb on my mac book air. However when I download songs from iTunes I can not be connected wirelessly to the internet at the same time. Can I hard wire my TC in to my mac so that I can treat the TC as just an external hard drive? Thanks

Initially, you asked if you can hardwire your MBA to the TC. The answer is yes, by using the optional USB Ethernet adapter that Apple provides. However, in order for your MBA to access the TC's internal or USB-attached HDD, it would need to establish a network connection to it. This would be true of any NAS device on an Ethernet network. Therein, lies the problem. Your MBA cannot connect to two networks simultaneously.
One option then, would be to have two separate iTunes Media folders; one on the MBA & the other on the TC. This way, you can download the music to your MBA when connected to the Internet at the AirPort lounge, and then use iTunes Consolidate Library feature to transfer the audio files to the TC's iTunes Media Folder location. A great program to help maintain multiple iTunes Librarys and/or Media Folders, that you may want to consider, is PowerTunes.

  • HT1449 Can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?

    Hi
Would anyone know if I can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?
This would give me some hard drive space on my iMac and more importantly mean my iTunes library is available all the time. Although I have Home sharing I need my iMac on and if not I use iTunes on iCloud I always seem to be downloading the tracks I need.
    Current configuration / devices:
    iMac 20-inch, Mid 2007 - nearly full!
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    OSX Mavericks
    Time Capsule (1TB)
    iPad
    iPod Touch
    Apple TV
    iTunes 11.1.5 (5)
    Many thanks

What "devices" are these?  By devices I normally understand i-devices and not computers.  How many computers?
If you put the whole library on the Time Capsule (TC) you can only use it with one computer at a time because the iTunes library file can only be opened by one copy of iTunes at a time.  If you put only media on the TC but have a copy of the library files on each computer you can use media by multiple computers but you then have the headache of trying to make sure that any changes done to the collection by one computer are mirrored by the libraries on the other computers which will be more or less independent.
I hope this TC isn't also your backup drive.  When the TC drive fails (and it will someday) then your whole collection is gone.  Don't rely upon Apple to always have copies for you to download.  For one, if a distributor puylls an item then it is gone period.  Additionally, Apple only keeps media, not the actual organization that is your set of library files.  If you do this, buy another backup drive.

  • Time Capsule and iTunes set up not working, please help.

I have moved my itunes library to my time capsule and changed my itunes preferred path to its time capsule location. However when I restart my apple laptop, after having shut it off for the night, and open itunes (time capsule is visible and accessible to the laptop), itunes has reversed the preferred path I set to point to my time capsule to my local laptop hard drive instead. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have looked in other discussions concerning lost itunes file paths, however I never had this issue with my wired external drive; and I only start iTunes after I am sure that my computer can access the files on my time capsule. Thank you.
My laptop is a Macbook Pro 2.3 Ghz running Mac OS X (10.5.2)

If you're still experiencing "disconnects," even with the earlier firmware, but not experiencing these at all when directly connecting your computer to the modem, there is a good chance that one of the following may still be the problem:
o Bad Ethernet cable between the D-Link & TC.
    o The TC is faulty.
    o The D-Link is faulty.
o The TC & D-Link are just not compatible with each other.
o The ADSL signal strength, coming from your ISP into the D-Link, may need "tuning."
I'd start with trying a known good Ethernet cable. If that doesn't resolve the problem try contacting your ISP/ADSL-Provider next to see if they can run a ADSL line diagnostic to verify that there is a good signal to the D-Link; While you have them on the line, see if they can provide you with another modem.
Finally, if available to you, try temporarily replacing the current TC with another TC or another wireless router.

  • I bought a 3tb Time Capsule and would like to stream movie from it to my Samsung Smart TV.  Do I need Apple TV or Another App?

I bought a 3tb Time Capsule and would like to stream movies from it to my Samsung Smart TV.  Do I need Apple TV or Another App?

TC is not a media device.. it has no media smarts at all.
And Apple TV is not a media player .. it is strictly a streamer.
Apple have built their entire media system around itunes.. so without itunes running on a computer nothing will happen.
The TC is unsuitable as location for your iTunes library as well.. you are simply slowing down the access to the library and making streaming more prone to glitches.
    TC is for TM backups.
Use your Mac with iTunes library on an external hard disk if it is too big to fit in the internal disk.
The samsung TV cannot use the TC either because it needs a DLNA server extension on the storage.
There is however one way.. and not recommending it.. just saying it can be done.
Depending on how your media files are formatted.. you can use a WD live TV.
Because WD TV is a full media player and can play raw media files (almost any format) directly from a media source without DLNA, you can play your movie files.. but IMHO it is much easier to simply get a WD MyCloud or any cheap NAS.. that has built in DLNA media server.. almost all do.. and then your TV can play the media directly without any other player.

  • I recently bought a new iMac as well as a wireless time capsule and have it connected how can I use this external drive as the location to store all my files for iTunes, or is this even possible?

New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes?  I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.

I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion.

  • How can I transfer my music from an external hard drive to my Time Capsule and can I play it through apple TV?

All my music is currently stored on an external hard drive, but I would like to transfer everything onto my Time Capsule, so that everything is backed up, what is the best way to do this?
Is there a way I can then play all the content stored on the Time Capsule through apple tv without the need to clog up my macbook hard drive?

Did you import the music on the external hard drive into your iTunes library on your new PC or point iTunes at the location of your library stored on the external hard drive?
