ITunes to iPhone... Playlists only? Am I missing something?

I haven't had my iPhone for -too- long yet but am just getting into putting music on it... it seems the only way to get music to the iPhone is to sync with a Playlist.... ?!? Is this right?
I would think I could drag an album, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Am I missing something here?
Thanks,
Andrew

Yep you are missing something. I think DJ miss-understood your question; you do not have to have playlists to sync with an iPhone. You need to look at your sync settings, i.e. let iTunes manage your music. You'll also need to make sure that the songs you want synced have the little check mark beside them.
You also need to look under the song tab when the iPhone is plugged in and be sure all the sync settings are correct.

  • Itunes to Iphone Playlist transfer?

How can I transfer a playlist from the Itunes on my PC onto my iphone 4? I have the latest Itunes. Thanks!

Ctrl+s doesn't do anything.  I can get a sidebar by clicking on "playlists" at the top but the device doesn't show up in the sidebar anymore, only a list of playlists.  If I try to drag a playlist onto the "iPhone" device icon in the top right corner of the window it doesn't let me, and nothing happens.
If I try dragging an individual album to the right in order to get it onto my iphone via a sidebar that opens up on the right hand side, as the tutorial says, that works.  But it doesn't work if you try to drag individual songs or groups of songs.  There is apparently no way to get a song onto your iPhone anymore, or a playlist.  (After more fiddling) ... okay, you can do the drag-to-the-right-and-a-new-window-will-open-up thing with individual songs but you can't do it from the "songs" or "artists" or "genres" or "playlists" list, you can only do it from the 'album' list.
(Further fiddling, using every possible command button - none of them worked - and then every possible combination of command buttons to see if I could get the sidebar window to open up): ctrl+s does nothing; likewise option+s and command+s.  However, And I am going to put this in caps for all the other frustrated people out there,
OPTION+COMMAND+S WILL OPEN THE SIDEBAR WINDOW!
And then you can put music and playlists on your iPhone the way you used to be able to before they decided to make iTunes impossible to do anything but buy stuff with.
No thanks to Apple for not bothering to put this anywhere in the documentation, or the help file.

  • ITunes and iPhone playlists don't match...

So I have all the new updates for the 3GS and my iTunes. I noticed now after i download music and they show up in my recently added playlist, after syncing they don't show up the same way on my phone. This is annoying since it's a quick reference for me to play new songs i just downloaded without searching for an artist and what not. Anyone have any ideas? Is it the new update?

I had the same problem, and the same solution worked. Very annoying! "Recent Additions" playlists are the kind of thing you want live updating on. I have two other Recent Additions list: one for Pop and one for Rock/Metal. Neither of those lists had this problem.
I also discovered that if I re-check the Live Updating box and sync again - it gets messed up on the iPhone again. Also, the playlist under the iPhone (that you can see when it's plugged into the computer) always showed the correct songs, even though they were wrong on the iPhone.

You are also posting in the wrong place. This is the Mac App Store forum, apps for Mac computers. You should post in the iTunes forum.
BTW, I see scores of iPhone music apps in the iTunes App Store for the iPhone when I search with the search word music.

  • ITunes on iPhone: Playlist

Has anyone noticed how to tell what playlist is currently playing? I can find the SONG that's playing (obviously), but cannot find any indication of which playlist is playing at the moment.

I've since discovered that my "Purchased" playlist does indeed update on my iPhone.  The issue is that I have the most recent items sorted to the top (so they're the first in view).  Unfortunately, any new purchase with my iPhone goes directly to the bottom of the playlist (no matter how it's sorted).  After I sync to my computer, songs are sorted properly again (with most recent going to top).
If there are known tactics to avoid this annoyance, I'd love to hear 'em!

There is no playlist for iBooks, butther eis nothing to preent you from choosing to download specific titles from itunes, or syncing just specific titles to an individual device.

  • I have an iphone 6 with the most recent iOS.  iTunes Match is on.  Music app only showing songs purchased on iTunes and no playlists are displayed.  Just happened when updating iTunes Match.  Solutons?

I have an iPhone 6 with 64 GB of memory.  I have iTunes Match turned on my account and on the phone.  Suddenly, the Music app is only displaying music purchased directly from iTunes and no playlists are displayed.  This occurred after updating iTunes Match on my PC; when new music did not appear, I turned off iTunes Match off/on the PC then did the same on iPhone 6.  It looks like iTunes Match is trying to do a full download to the phone but it never completes.  Ideas?

can anyone tell me how to restore my itunes library and playlists? After I downloaded mountain lion my library is missing and my devices can be synced to only one library ...the missing one

That .itl file actually is the library -- at least the critical part of it although the library is actually many files and folders.
Try starting iTunes and immediately hold down the option key.  When it asks, guide it to the .itl file.
It's really hard to say without being able to poke around your computer.  Upgrading should not delete the old library, but still it happens to the very, very few which is why we make backups before updating.  If the old library file is gone then so are your playlists.  You can always see if the following is of any use:

Try designating a System Photo Library. Then your apps will use that.

    Thanks

    Hi,
I do not understand your problem. iTunes Match does not change the way iTunes looks. When match process is complete, the match screen tells you how much music you have in the cloud.
Across the top of screen you have options to select songs, albums, artist, composers etc.
Suggest that from main menu, select view>show sidebar.

  • HT1386 When I sync my iPhone 4S with my iTunes, the playlists that used to show on my iTunes on the computer only show on the iPhone.  How do I get them to sync to iTunes.

My computer was reformatted and after I installed iTunes and synced with my iPhone 4S, the playlist only shows on my iPhone and not on my computer in iTunes.
Any suggestions as to how I can get it back on my computer?

I've been experiencing the same problems, until my friend told me to manage my songs and albums manually instead of syncing it. to do that, connect your phone to the macbook via usb and go to 'songs', and scroll down. check the box that says 'manually manage songs and albums', and from there all you do is drag-and-drop your playlists into your iphone under the 'device' tabs. as for the random songs, uncheck the box that says 'automatically fill free space with songs'. hope this helps!

  • Am I the only person who misses the drag and drop method of adding and deleting songs on iTunes devices?

I am constantly getting frustrated with the newer versions of iTunes because my different apple devices have different amounts of storage. I miss the days when I could drag and drop songs to various devices. I don't always want the same songs on all devices, so I don't like to sync because I sometimes lose something I want to keep on that device. I am just curious if I'm the only one who misses this feature or is there a way of doing this that I've just not found? Thanks.

In the Summary tab of iTunes - when the iDevice is connected to your Mac - select Manually Manage Music and Videos. You should be able to drag and drop.
If you don't see the sidebar and the device is syncing automatically, you can enable the sidebar from the ITunes Menu - View>Show Sidebar. The. You can click on your device name imder the devices heading, then click on the Summary Tab.
You can also disable auto syncing in iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing autonatically.
I never auto sync and never have. I select Sync Only Checked Songs And Videos in the Summary tab and I can still drag and drop songs. I can also select the albums, playlist, or artists that I want to sync by using this method.

  • ITunes 10 - iPhone 4 Device playlist not updating from main iTunes Playlist

Installed iTunes 10 and synched with an Apple iPhone 4. After the first install, I could see all of the Playlists displayed in iTunes when I selected to sync Music on the iPhone using the 'Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres'. After the initial install of the iPhone 4, I add or rename playlists in the main iTunes app and these new playlists do not appear at all in the iPhone Music playlists to be selected.
I can add songs to a playlist and the iPhone playlist gets the new tracks OK.
I tried renaming a playlist that showed up OK in the iPhone Music Playlists and the playlist disappeared from the iPhone Music Playlists.
All of the playlists work fine within the main iTunes window, I can add, delete, rename playlists without any issues there. The only issue I have is within the iPhone 4 Music Sync Music tab where I select playlists.
I reinstalled the iTunes 10 and did a restore of the iPhone and the problem persists.

The same issue occurs with my iPad.
Spoke with Apple twice and the attempts so far have not resulted in the problem being fixed. What's been done to date is:
    - reinstalled iTunes 10
    - move the iTunes Music Library.xml file to desktop and then selected the option to import the library using the xml file from the desktop (this took about 12 hours to run, I have about 108,000 tracks in my library)
After these two attempts, I continue to have the issue whereby playlists showing up on the Devices on iTunes to select playlists do not match with the playlist within the main iTunes window.
Any other ideas of what could be done?

  • I have the newest version of itunes 11.1.3.8. I have one song that i want moved from itunes to my iphone WITHOUT erasing my iphone playlists which happens each time i sync. please help

I have the newest version of itunes 11.1.3.8.  I have uploaded a CD into my itunes library. I would like to add one song only to my iphone. I have created playlists on my iphone and each time I sync all of my iphone playlists get erased and I have to recreated them. after the sixth time, I am very hesitant to do any kind of syncing. Is there a way to just move one song without syncing? I have read some posts that talk about this but have not been able to do it. For example, the "summary tab" does not exist on my version of itunes. I tried drag and drop on itunes as explained in their help section but that did not move the song to my iphone. Please help

You are probably running OS 10.4 or 10.5 on a PPC Mac.  No version of  iTunes higher than 10.6.3 is available for these older Macs.  I have the same problem, and while I can still use the PPC to sync my iPod, it can't be used to sync an iPhone 4 or higher.  The only solution, as I discovered after upgrading to the iPhone 4, is to buy a newer Mac.  I was able to get a 2006 MacBook running Lion for under $300, and that has been a lifesaver.

  • Why do I have extra songs in my iPhone playlist that are not on my iTunes library?

After doing the iOS7 update (and iOS7.0.2) I decided to add my music to my phone (I never had music on it before).
I discovered that there were 20 very random and obscure broadway songs that were on my iPhone in addition to the 60 songs I just synced. They had the iCloud icon by them, unlike the songs I had just added.
After doing research I found that the broadway songs were technically "purchased" on iTunes although they are not songs I would have ever purchased- in fact I have never once purchased anything on iTunes.  This isn't my worry though, I am assuming it must have been some random free download I did at some point?
I went to settings > music > and turned show all music off.  This did NOT work for all of them and only solved the problem 80%.  There are still 4 of the random song on my iPhone. They DO NOT show up in my iTunes library on my computer and don't even exist on my computer.
With the other songs I can left swip and delete but these 4 songs won't!  Why won't these four songs left swipe?
I am going crazy and have tried restarting my phone, restarting iTunes, re-syncing, turning off the iCloud.  NOTHING WORKS.
Please help.  I am a normally a very smart and tech-savvy person and I cannot for the life of me figure this out.  I don't want to wipe everything- which as a solution is a pretty weak solution.
Why won't certain songs left swipe to delete off my phone when I am in the music app?
Why do I have extra songs on my phone that don't appear on iTunes on my computer?
Where did these songs come from and how do I get rid of them?
    Much thanks!

I had the exact same issue!! Seriously p*ssed me off when I checked out my ITunes purchased items (via my computer) and noticed that most of the additional tracks listed on my IPhone playlist was listed there too. However, I never authorized any purchases!!  (I have actually written Apple Support asking for a full refund of all tracks listed on my purchased list)
Be careful when you swipe your finger to the left/right on those "additional" tracks on your IPhone playlist... I'm pretty sure that the cloud symbol is an option to download or automatically buy those tracks.
    Solution for the problem:
1 - go to your IPhone settings
    2 - choose "iTunes & App Store"
3 - go to "Show All" & "Music"
4 - turn off "Music" by moving the bar to the left (it should be a white color once you turn it off)
    Should solve your problem :~)
