hi Grace!
i'm having a little difficulty visualising your situation. here's what my screen looks like when i have mauve plugged in and selected in the source list:
http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1h4B1YwrMjCYZDVHmX0nIWDNMpBM40
... and i'm trying to work out what you mean by the import button in the bottom right corner.
is your ipod showing up in the source list to the left, like mauve is on mine?
it might be easiest to send us a screenshot of what you're seeing. here's instructions:

    Hi clairelajm,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
Typically there are two different ways to get your purchased content into iTunes on your computer. You can either transfer the purchases from the iPod or you can download them directly to iTunes from the Purchased section. The following article shows you how to transfer the purchases.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
If you would like to download the purchases directly to iTunes, please follow the following article.

    I hope this helps,

  • Itunes and ipod help...

ok, so my computer received a huge error somewheres along the line and it wouldn't even get past the windows loading screen without crashing and giving me the blue screen of death. i reinstalled windows and cleared my hard drive in the process because i figured i picked up a virus that was screwing with my computer.
i've since reinstalled the most of my programs and got to itunes to hopefully get the songs back on. i had back ups made on a partition on my HDD but when i reinstalled windows, i wasn't sure with what got hit and my dad, a total computer genius, suggested to me to just totally wipe it clean. so i did so.
so now im stuck with a newly authorized computer with all my bought songs in the library but none of my other songs. i couldn't burn a cd back up because i couldn't get my computer to work and i couldn't make the folder back up and put it on my nano like the way that itune's tells you to transfer libraries.
so i still got all my songs on my ipod, but any of the new songs i get and try to put on my ipod will ask me to sync my ipod with my new library, thus effectively clearing my ipod and leaving one new cd.
so im sure you guys can see my dilemma and hopefully someone can help me

"so i still got all my songs on my ipod, but any of the new songs i get and try to put on my ipod will ask me to sync my ipod with my new library, thus effectively clearing my ipod and leaving one new cd."
When you connect and get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can retrieve the songs from your iPod by the way. If you have any iTMS purchases on there the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only

Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • I recently uninstalled my itunes and reinstalled. after that i lost all my music and am unable to put hunderds of songs back onto my itunes and ipod. help!

I uninstalled my iTines and re-installed on my Fujitsu laptop. When I went to synch, I was unable tosynch my iPod to my iTunes. In addtion,I am unable to put my iTunes library of 100s of songs back onto my iTunes or iPod.I have lost all my compilations and my playlists.

    Hey bryce255,
Thanks for the question, that definitely sounds frustrating. Luckily, we have steps available that may be able to restore your previous library:
No content shows up in iTunes after updating
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967
    Resolution
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Download and install the latest version of iTunes.
    3. Use the Finder (Mac) or Windows Explorer (Windows) to go to the iTunes folder that contains the iTunes library files:
    Mac OS X
    /Users/username/Music/iTunes/
Microsoft Windows Windows XP and Windows 2000
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
Microsoft Windows Windows Vista and Windows 7
    \Users\username\Music\iTunes\
    4. Drag the iTunes Library file from the above location to the Desktop.
    5. Open the Previous iTunes Libraries folder in the iTunes folder.
    6. Locate the file named iTunes Library YYYY-MM-DD where YYYY-MM-DD is the date you upgraded iTunes (Year-Month-Day).
    7. Drag this file to the iTunes folder (the enclosing folder).
    8. Rename this file to iTunes Library.
    9. Open iTunes.
You should now see your missing content in iTunes.
If the above does not resolve your issue, you can learn about re-creating your iTunes library:

  • Music not in iTunes or iPod help please!!

I am currently on Windows Vista, but my old computer was XP. The hard drive of my old computer got so full I had to delete all my music to free up some space. I thought I had backed it up on disc use on my iPod, but later I found out that somehow that hadn't happened.
So I figured I could just transfer everything to my new computer from my ipod. I hooked it up, told it not to erase anything, enabled manual use, all that good stuff, and itunes locks up. So I restarted my computer and replugged the ipod, but rater than ask me the same questions itunes just erased everthing on my ipod! The only things in itunes and my ipod are purchases! Most of my songs were from CDs, a lot of which I don't own or have since lost. I had over a thousand songs and now I have 96.
Is there anyway to recover songs off your ipod once itunes decides to delete them or am I just screwed? I didn't even get a chance to download a program that could have transfered my music from my ipod. Please help me!

*The hard drive of my old computer got so full I had to delete all my music to free up some space.*
You really painted yourself into a corner. The better solution would have been to purchase an external drive. I've seen 290G units for less than US$100. The iPod should NEVER be the prime storage device.
*I thought I had backed it up on disc use on my iPod...*
You've got it backwards. The computer's hard drive backs up the iPod. Further, the computer's hard drive should be backed up to CDs/DVDs or yet another external hard drive but certainly not the iPod as the iPod backs up NOTHING.
*Most of my songs were from CDs, a lot of which I don't own...*
Well, now that I realize that you're stealing music, I no longer have any sympathy for you.

  • Syncing problems with Itunes and Ipod Help?

Okay..I don't even know what's been happening with the newest Ios 5 update for apple products, but since the update, my ipod hasn't been able to synch with Itunes.
For example, I manually organize all my music and when I edit the album artist or the album artwork etc, it would show up in Itunes perfectly, but on the Itouch, nothing has been changed. This means that not only does it now show the album artwork that I set up in Itunes, but also all the artists as well. I've seen many people so far having this problem, but through all the solutions people have said, none have worked for me. Another problem is that it also mix and matches all the songs I have downloaded as well. Only the songs I purchase seem to be alright.
I have tried many things from restoring my Itouch and re-downloading music, manually re-synching my Itouch to see if the artists will show up, but to no avail, it hasn't worked.
Please help me. It's getting quite frustrating that nothing is synching since the newest ios 5.1.1 update. Thank you

The ipod touch will only sync to one computer at a time. If you sync to another it will indeed erase the content from the ipod first, then replace with content from the new computer.
Sign into your account on the computer, make sure it is authorized, then connect the ipod:

Can anybody help every time i load my ipod nano and i tunes and quick time i loose my cd / dvd drivers so when i load a cd my pc does not regonise any disk in the drive , but when i reset to previous cd rom works perfect any help appreciated.
    Packard Bell   Windows XP

Ok here is why the whole CD drive thing wont work. I explained it to someone the other day and i just copied and pasted it so I wont have to repeat myself again
For the most part, what's occurring is one of two things. Either...
    A) an application (such as iTunes, etc.) is installing a driver file (as a .SYS) or replacing a working driver file that is referenced within your registry. For some folks, the replaced driver is still referenced by either an UpperFilterCheck or a LowerFilterCheck, and the device manager is actually seeking out that file that, well... no longer exists. Or, when you try and uninstall the application (iTunes is the frequent transgressor) everything is removed, including the related driver files, but the registry isn't altered... so the device manager continues to try and locate that driver file... which no longer exists.
    or
    B) a virus (or trojan) burrows its way into your file structure, and creates an element of itself disguised as a .SYS file. We've seen this happen before with viral elements disguising themselves as audio or video card driver files, in the efforts of masking themselves from lower-class anti-virus programs (or un-updated ones). In this case, they take on the name of a driver file that the optical drives are "familiar" with, and so, with the intention of being "fast, friendly, and efficient", the optical drives are tapped to utilize this new "driver" file... and it gets referenced in the registry as such.
However, when your anti-virus actually snaps to it, and removes the virus / trojan, and you go off on a virus-killing mission, galavanting through the registry and cleaning the little buggers out in Safe Mode and everything... you might remove the viral elements... but... the reference to them might still remain. The device manager is still looking for that "driver file", and will cause the optical drives to lock up in a Code 39 or Code 41 because of it.
Either way, he thing to do to reclaim your optical drives is located in your registry here:
    HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}
You'll want to have that open, and a mini-window of the following:
START -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> Hardware (tab) -> DEVICE MANAGER -> Offending Drive (with yellow tag by it) Right-Mouse-Click and PROPERTIES -> Driver (tab) -> DRIVER DETAILS
Notice that list. It references all the drivers that that particular drive is utilizing. There should be a single .DLL (dynamic link library) file and multiple .SYS files. It's the .SYS files we're focusing on, and they should be located in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder stem. If you want to open a new window explorer, and go verify that each of those driver files still exists in that folder stem, you may.
At this point, compare the Driver File Detail list with the Registry Tree Location you're sitting in, and look at the UpperFilterCheck and LowerFilterCheck key values. Your offending key value will NOT be on your Driver File Detail list!!! It might be as small as "PFC" or something else, but that value is referencing to a driver file that no longer exists. Delete that offending key value. Close the registry.
Close the Driver File Details and Drive Properties windows. At this point, to finish this up, you need to Soft Uninstall (Right-mouse-click on the drive, and hit "Uninstall" ) the drive(s), let the Device Manager refresh... then hit ACTION -> Scan For Hardware Changes ...
This should start a new Found New Hardware cycle, and.... poof!... your drives should be back to normal.
Here is a microsoft article, its regarding easy cd creater, but its pretty much a similiar thing

Alright, right after posting my question I figured it out. I plugged my iPod into one of the USB ports in the front of the MacPro and it worked like a charm. Now the problem is, what is wrong with the two ports in the back of my Apple Cinema HD screen? That I can't figure out clearly. The USB connection from it to the MacPro is connected.
