Itunes to run on flash drive,  can it be done?

I would like to load my Itunes and library on a flash drive, is it possible?

You can, but you shouldn't. Flash drives aren't meant for the kind of constant access that having your iTunes library on one would produce. It will make the drive fail more quickly and conclude with possible data loss.
If you really need to run your library from an external location, buy an inexpensive hard drive (and back it up!). For me, the peace of mind would be worth the money.

  • Can I move only my iTunes movies, not my iTunes music, onto a flash drive? And, is there a program (apart from iTunes) that can play movies on MacBook Air?

I have a MacBook Air and I need to free up space...
    1) I have three series of a tv show on my itunes which are taking up loads of memory - see image - I want to move these movie files onto a Flash Drive. However I do not want to move my itunes Music onto the flash drive, only my Movies, and want to keep my music on my hard drive.
    Is this possible?
    2) I have managed to copy the movie files onto the flash drive, however when I tried to play one to check that they were loaded properly it didn't have a program that could run the file (they have copied over in a m4V format). Do the MacBook Air's not have a separate program other than itunes that can play movies? If so, is there a program I can get to solve this problem? I went onto the App Store to see if there was something I could download, but all the apps were for creating DVD's, not simply playing them.
    3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
Thank you so much for any answers posted.

If you can play the movies in iTunes, you should be able to open the movie files using Quicktime, which should already be on your system.  If you have already transferred the files to your flash drive, open the flash drive in Finder, and hold control when you click on the movie file (or right click if you have the enabled) and select Open With Quicktime Player.  This should play the movie directly from the flash drive.
If you want to set all .m4v files to open with Quicktime by just double clicking on the file, you can follow the steps here: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2573/os_x_how_to_change_default_application_to_op en_file_type/

You can move the TV shows to your flash drive by dragging them from the iTunes window to your flash drive in Finder or the flash drive icon on the desktop.  When you are sure everything is transferred over to your external device, you can delete the movie from iTunes.  I recommend playing the videos from the flash drive first before deleting them in iTunes.
To delete the videos from iTunes, you can highlight them and press the delete key on your keyboard.  In the next prompt, you would want to move it to the trash so that it is deleted from your internal hard drive.
    I hope that helps!

  • Can I put my Itunes library on a flash drive instead of in my laptop?

I need to clear space on my laptop and wondered if I could put the whole Itunes on my SanDisk flash drive (32 GB).  I'm not very computer "nuts and bolts" savvy.

Yes. Drag it over, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down, and point it there.

  • IPhoto & iTunes libraries on USB flash drive. What happens after erase/install?

Not exactly sure how much background someone like Kappy needs for this question but I'll try to not make it a novel.
My late 2010 MBA (64GB) was way low on storage so I decided to get a 64GB USB drive for it and put my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on it. Moving both libraries went exactly according to the instructions. But then after a while iPhoto started to get very slow. The spinning beach ball was running amok. This prompted me to use DU on the new flash drive which didn't show any problems. After doing that I decided to run DU on my mac HD and found a problem that coudn't be repaired without erasing and re-installing Mavericks 10.9.2..
Now, here is my current situation:  I have erased and as I write this am downloading a clean copy of Mavericks from recovery. I had backed up everything to my TC just yesterday.
    Here is my question:
After re-installing what do I do about telling iTunes and iPhoto where to find the libraries? Or, should I just use the copy of everything that I had backed up yesterday?
Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question. I checked to see if there was some support file for my issue but couldn't find anything that really fit.
As always, thanks for everyone's input. I always learn something from you guys.
    Regards, Richard
P.S.: I realize that the problem with iPhoto might not have been the issue with my mac HD and doing what I've done may not fix it. But I wanted to fix the problem with the HD before I went any further trying to fix iPhoto. I hadn't had issues with iTunes functioning with the flash drive, only iPhoto.

Yes, there's no real solution.  Apple makes thin, small computers and devices, but of course that means no big drive to store all the bulky media Apple itself promotes on the iTunes Store.  You then have to buy external storage which is almost as big as the device you are using, negating the whole concept of a mobile device.  I guess you can try wireless, though I can tell you I see about 30+ wireless devices in my neighborhood and with them trying to share only 3 non-overlapping channels I frequently see network slowdown through interference.  Of course you bought that nice light computer so you could take it away form home too, but then you are locked into using what's available on the Internet. I guess part of Apple's answer is cloud storage and redownloading.  However, Apple itself says you need to maintain your own independent archive: "You always back up your iTunes library in the event that a purchased item is no longer available on the iTunes Store," (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519), and, Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud, iTunes Match, and iTunes Radio availability by country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085 ); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).   Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.
Cloud storage is a convenience but not a replacement for a hard drive at home (and of course, works best when you buy everything from the iTunes Store).

  • Possible play iTunes movies from USB flash drive in iTunes on public PCs?

Posting on behalf of a friend who wants to play movies purhased in iTunes from a USB flash drive (thumbdrive) on pulic compuers (Win XP) with iTunses installed on them. Again: he wants to play movies puchased in iTunes on computers other than his own and he wants to be able to play them from the USB drive. Is this possible and, if so, how would one go about doing it?
    Many thanks,

Start itunes on the public PC, and immediately go into itunes preferences > Advanced.
Make sure the setting for "Copy files to itunes when adding to library" is unchecked.
Then add the file to itunes like any other file (either through the itunes menus or windows drag & drop).
The file will stay on the USB, but it will be listed in itunes so it can be played.
When finished watching the movie, it would be a courtesy to others on that public PC to remove the movie from the itunes library. Once the USB is unplugged, itunes will give a "original file can't be located" message to anyone else. This is assuming everyone uses the same windows login.
I've never heard of public PCs having itunes installed. Just curious, where is this at? A library? Workplace?

You could format that HDD as Fat32/MS-DOS, but you'd be limited to 4 GB Filesizes.

  • Can't drag songs from itunes onto anything (desktop, flash drive, etc.)

    This is weird.
All of a sudden, I can't drag songs from itunes onto the desktop, any folder on my hard drive, my flash drive, or my spare hard drive. On a health computer, if you drag a large number of files, first they land as white icons and they fill in as they get transferred. With my computer, the white icons stick around for a few second and then disappear. The first time I try, I can transfer 1-10 files successfully. After that it stops working. Here is what I've done.
1] Upgraded my system from 10.3.X to 10.4.5
    2] I upgraded itunes from 7.0 to 7.3.1
    Has anyone seen this before?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    Jeff

Since I can not edit my own post I'll have to reply to myself... Sorry for the "spam" on the forums.
I DID find something out (while playing with this some more)...
Try and copy as many songs as you can with UNIQUE titles. I've noticed that when you drag the songs in iTunes to the desktop (or a folder) the file it creates/copies is named like so: "songtitle.mp3."
Apparently the Finder and iTunes don't play well together [enough] to prevent several files of the same name from appearing - in most OS's I've played with (Linux and Windows, in addition to other Apple & Mac OS's over the years) there's a mechanism for handling this... Windows just adds a number to the end the of the second (and all future occurring) file(s) of the same name - as does most Linux builds I've used... Apparently the Finder in OS X just doesn't do anything - at all - when it discovers this "name error."
What I had to do (I was copying my Christmas music - do you know how many "Jingle Bells.mp3" files you can have?!) was make many folders or manually rename EACH FILE one by one so that others could be copied in the same place since the file name would always be JUST THE SONG NAME and the extension (and I do tend to keep my files in higher bitrate MP3 format for easier shuffling from OS to OS as I tend to use (in case you've not noticed) many different ones at any given time).
So, try avoiding any songs with the same title (or altering the title in iTunes somehow), or make separate folders to keep the same song name files from being created in the same place; and see if that doesn't clear this problem up for you - it did for me. ^_^
    And sorry for being so "wordy" on this post. ^_^;

  • Does anyone know how to put Itunes music into a flash drive?

I'm trying to put my music from my Mac Book Pro into a flash drive so I can play it in the car.

    cristian19862 wrote:
    how can I do that?
Highlight the tracks you want in your iTunes library.  Insert the flash drive into your computer, open it so it looks like a folder, and simply drag the highlighted tracks to it.
This puts a copy of each file onto your flash drive, and does not change anything in your library.
If you normally run iTunes in full screen mode, make it smaller so you can do the drag,

  • Saving a slide show when catalog runs from flash drive

A little background - I manage two separate classes of students who use the same laptop with PSE8.  Each student has their own flash drive to save a custom catalog for the PSE8. Each time students open PSE8 they load their custom catalog.  All image files are saved onto the flash drive.  We have been using custom catalogs because our computers have Deep Freeze installed. This system has worked well for images.
When saving a slide show there is no way to specify where the slide show should be saved.  I assumed that the slide show would save to the catalog which is sitting on the flash drive.  Unfortunately, this is not the case.  How can I save a slide show on a external flash drive?  I want students to be able to save and be able to reopen their slideshows.
    thanks,
    Robert

    Robert,
Right now,I am looking at my current PSE 7 install on Vista. There is a .psess file type which contains slide show project information. I suspect that this might be the file you are seeking.  And I think this file exists with the same purpose in PSE 8.
For PSE 8, you might find those files under a folder structure of
    ..... \Elements Organizer\Catalogs\name of the specific catalog\projects
I desginated the dots at the beginning of the folder structure because they could be different depending on what version of Windows is running and potentially even other installation choices specific to that machine.
Therefore, you might try searching for the .psess slide show project file type.
Note 1: I am not sure v8 will place the project folder and the .psess files in your case where you have used a custom location for the Catalog that is on a flash drive. Please post back here with the location where you do find the files
Note 2:  I suspect that if you are teaching syncing to photoshop.com, you might also need to be concerned about the location of the syncdb folder. My guess would be that it is near that project folder. If you do determine the syncdb location, please also post it back here. Thanks.

  • FileVault + USB Flash drive = can't open excel files

I can't open files in Excel that are stored on flash drives (I have several flash drives with the same files) in my account that has FileVault enabled.
The files open just fine when copied to the Desktop.
Same flash drive, same computer, same Excel, different user (no FileVault), no problem.

I don't think it was FileVault per se. I managed to recreate the issue in a user account not protected by FileVault.
I have my drive partitioned, and one of the partitions is named "Fun". If I then connect another disk named "Fun" (or a disk image with that name) and then try to launch an Excel file from that other disk I get the error.
The problem seems to be in the way Excel is resolving the paths of files it's opening. You can use this Apple Script to see what I mean:
    tell application "Finder"
    return name of every disk
    end tell
When run this will show you the names of every disk mounted. When I run it I see the following:
    {"Backups", "Fun", "Fun", "Workdrive", "work"}
You can see there that I have two disks named fun. When excel tries to open a file called "test.xlsx" on my external disk named "Fun", it uses the path "fun:test.xlsx". This path causes confusion because there are two disks with the same name. I suspect it's more a problem with how Excel identifies files and volumes. Other applications (including older versions of Excel) must be doing it differently.
