ITunes too resource intensive

If anyone wants to try this simple test, please post your results so I can see if I'm the only one experiencing it-
First open Windows Task Manager by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL.
If iTunes isn't running, open it now.
Place the mouse cursor on the iTunes volume control, and hold the left mouse button down.
On my system (P4 2.4 Ghz,768 MB RAM), the CPU usage for iTunes.exe jumps up to 98% or 99%. Also, the Memory Usage for iTunes is around 47 MB.
I think this is a bit much for an MP3 player. BTW, I'm using iTunes 6.
Thanks for any replies!!
-Bill

Edit: I just noticed that this only happens when iTunes is in "Mini Player" mode (CTRL+M)

  • Error message "iTunes Helper Resources not available" and saving to wrong Drive

I am trying to upgrade iTunes to 10.7 on my PC but I keep getting the error message "iTunes Helper Resources not available". Diagnostics take me a support page which talks about not being able to see the device in iTunes - but I can see the device without problems.
I thought I would try reinstalling iTunes from the webpage and it downloaded to my PC fine but when I went to setup, it showed me it is saving to a DVD drive - not my Hard drive. It also won't let me change the location for the file. I have no idea how that's happened as I obviously don't use the DVD drive as a USB (although the PC see's it as one) and I've never chosen it as the location for iTunes in the 7-8 years that I've been using it.
I then thought I'd try uninstalling it and reinstalling it (to the correct drive) but again, it comes up that the DVD drive is invalid and won't uninstall iTunes.
So I'm stuck and haven't been able to find anything helpful on the support pages or in iTunes Help.
    Please someone help ...
    Thanks.

Try the following user tip. (Probably, the section on clearing the installation database might be best given that you've currently got a drive on the problematic letter at the moment.)

Got my daughter an ipod touch 4th and it wont dothe back up from itunes? I bought my other daughter an iphone 4 and its doing the same thing. Both are locking up itunes too. I tried the deactivate/activate that was suggested it still didnt work. I took the ipod to a friend and hooked to her laptop and it synced fine but now trying to sync on mine it wont do it and it has the backup encryption on but no passwords will unlock it. itunes will reccognize the ipod and the iphone but while going thru the sync steps they both get to step 2 then lock up itunes and then says its syncing but will never stop. I am very frustrated and am regretting buying products from Apple.

It seems to be a glitch or bug. Its been officially acknowledged and addressed by Apple. There is no resolution other than waiting for a few days.   The Kb article by Apple states it will fix itself on January 7.

    Symptoms
After January 1st, 2013, Do Not Disturb mode stays on past its scheduled end time.
    Resolution
Do Not Disturb scheduling feature will resume normal functionality after January 7, 2013. Before this date, you should manually turn the Do Not Disturb feature on or off.
To turn off the scheduling feature, tap Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb and switch Scheduled to Off.

My ipad 2 just shows itunes and plug icon my computer wont take new version of itunes too old how do i get my ipad 2 working do not care about saving data just want to use this very expensive useless item!

My iPad2 works great now after IOS 8.1 Update
I did my iPad2 update thru iTunes on my iMac and it was sucking the iMacs memory very low during the update. Safari froze before loading the first web page and I did a hard boot and went fishing as I saw where it was going to take a long time to recover. When I tried again it wasn't quite right and then did one more hard boot and then did a Reset by going to General-Reset-"Reset all Settings" and it works real well now without loosing any data and in-home wi-fi clocks at 17Mbps download. Probably like most of you I’m sticking with OSX 10.9.5 Mavericks as it gets the job done very nicely and don’t need all that extra fancy stuff that probably will slow things down.

  • Is opportunity to resize images resource-intensive?

    Hello to ALL!!!
I'm trying to make a site with image gallery(for example -
pets). And I've thought about optimal size of full image. I've
chosen 640x480. And I'm going to use <imageresize> command
for images greater than 640/640. But I don't know(in practice) is
it a good idea to give opportunity to people to resize their images
with code of my site? I mean how resource-intensive this process
for a server? And what will happen if for example 500 people will
want to make "resize operation" at the same time?
    Thank you for your coments/answers!

if you are seriously going to have 500 people resizing at
    once, I would
    suspect you might have issues.
But for just average occasional uploads, you should be fine.
In my work so far with simple or even large batch resizing, I
    have not
    seen any major drag.
In fact I am overall very impressed with the speed and
    quality of image
    resizing in CF8.
    a bit OT:
here's a post about some code i've been working on for
    batch-resizing in
multiple folders, coupled with a jquery photo gallery ... if
    you *or any
other cf users* are interested, I am looking for testers

    - See if this program will place it in recovery mode since that erases the iPod and bypasses the passocode.

  • Is TOP a resource intensive query.

    Hi,
We are using TOP to monitor load on LInux production server.
I just wanted to know if TOP is a resource intensive command?
Whether TOP adds up to the load on server. Say for example TOP running simultenously from 5/6 putty sessions.
    Regards,

Running top with default parameters is not a resource intensive process. There were issues with long running top sessions in the past, with ported versions of the top command on certain Unix platforms, but Linux was not affected. I don't think you will notice a performance issue running several top sessions. You can easily test it. Whether or not the top utility is the right tool for what you are trying to accomplish however is a different question.

  • Iterator resource intensive?

    Hi guys,
    My code is below:
    HashMap documentMap = new LinkedHashMap();
              for (Iterator it = folderInfoMap.keySet().iterator(); it.hasNext();) {
                   String key = (String)it.next();
FolderInfo folderInfo = (FolderInfo)folderInfoMap.get(key);and I has been using iterator to loop thru all the Collection object many years. However, some joker in my office telling me that I shouldn't use iterator as it's resource intensive. he asked me to use for loop like below instead:
    for(int x=0;x<documentMap.size();x++{
    documentMap.get(x);
}and he said that the for loop is much lesser in using resources. Any ideas?
or we should convert collection to array then loop it thru like this link mention:
    http://www.exampledepot.com/egs/java.util/coll_GetArrayFromVector.html
    please help, Thanks !
    Thanks & Regards,
    Mark

    It's not a traversal.
It's a way of describing algorithmic complexity, i.e. the running time of algorithms, ignoring constant factors, i.e. concentrating only on the 'order' of the variables. The big O stands for 'order'. For example, bubble sort is an O(N**2) operation and is therefore avoided: decent sorting algorithms are O(N*log(N)) which gives them a better growth factor as N increases.
In your case, direct access to a HashMap is independent of the number of entries so it is described as an O(1) operation ('an operation of order 1'). Direct access to an element of a linked list takes time proportional to the length of the list, N, so it is an O(N) operation. Traversing a LinkedHashMap requires N operations of O(N) each so it is O(N**2) or 'order N squared'.
The time to do an O(1) operation is constant.
The time to do an O(N) operation is a multiple of N.
The time to do an O(N**2) operation is a multiple of N squared.
So you can see how your Iterator code stacks up against the office joker's for N=1, 2, 4, 8, ... 32768, 65536, ... Every time you double N, yours doubles in time, his quadruples, because of N versus N squared.

I updated my ipod Touch 4g directly on ipod using wifi. on itunes too it shows ios 6.1.2, but when I try to restore it, itunes downloads the software again. What can I do now?

Let the computer/iTunes download it. That is how Apple has it set up. When you restore via iTunes the IOS is reinstalled on the iPod. Thus, it needs to be on the computer.

No, it will not interfere with iTunes.

  • Top resource intensive processes on AIX/Unix/Linux

top is good to find this out, topas on aix, any other tips to find out memory/IO resource intensive processes, here i have for cpu....
    oracle:tulpfsd01$ ps -e -o pcpu -o pid -o user -o args | sort -k 1 | tail -5r
    %CPU PID USER COMMAND
    1.1 1230914 oracle oraclepwpd (LOCAL=NO)
    0.9 1248744 oracle oraclepwpd (LOCAL=NO)
    0.9 1099146 oracle oraclepwpd (LOCAL=NO)
    0.6 503688 oracle oraclepwpd (LOCAL=NO)
    0.5 1239486 oracle oraclepwpd (LOCAL=NO)

Generally, memory shouldn't be a concern. The total amount of SGA is set (fixed) with SGA_MAX_SIZE and occupies shared memory (to be seen with 'ipcs')
The PGA is set by PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET, but is only a rough pointer for oracle. Additional information about memory is seeable with pmap (alt least on linux and solaris)
You'll see the loaded shared libraries (which are used by the process in a shared matter, so not any process which uses libraries copy their own versions, and you should be able to identify the shared memory (identified with shmid=0xsomething) etc. On linux /proc/<pid>/maps shows the same in a little different way.
Now we've established that the shared libraries are used shared to preserve memory, and the shared memory is used shared (quite obviously), and 'put' into the process' address space, you should understand why listing VSS (virtual set size) and other memory stuff isn't very helpful: if you just add all listed used memory, there are much components which are not really used by that process.
Top and topas are helpful for finding CPU intensive processes. That is what both are designed for, to be able to identify the processes which are using the most slices of processor time. Of course, it's only helpful if you truly want to identify top CPU intensive processes. This is also quite easy to find inside the database.
IO: there's no way to identify processes which are the most intensive writers. Simple because linux doesn't keep statistics about it. Inside the database, it's easy to find (guess you should need an example of that?) please mind you should be aware how the database works: a user process does no writing, it's the logwriter, checkpointer and database writer who does that. The user process only reads.
I will see if I can find some nmon examples tomorrow, when I've got access to AIX systems.
If you still want examples, could you be specific?

  • IPhoto nightmare. Tried to import photos using Nikon software for the first time and all my photos disappeared from iPhoto 8.1.2 (and everything from itunes too). Newly reinstalled iPhoto crashes as soon as I import anything now.

Macbook OSX 10.5.8, iPhoto 8.1.2. I just tried to import some photos using Nikon software (View NX2) for the first time. When I next looked into iPhoto it was empty (so was iTunes but that's another story). I had backed up photos fairly recently but don't use time machine. Searched in vain everywhere and must have done something wrong because iPhoto wouldn't then open at all, saying it was unreadable. After a lot more attempts to recover I uninstalled iPhoto and the receipts and reinstalled from my original disc. It seemed to be ok and imported some photos from my iphone but as soon as the import is complete iPhoto crashes and when opened again it is empty. Have tried this several times and have shut down and have tried rebuilding with the alt and cmd buttons but nothing seems to help. Any ideas?

not a reply but not sure how to add something to my own thread! It seems that Desktop was damaged too as when I try to open it a screen says there is no application selected to open Desktop with. No idea what I should choose! Any help appreciated, have really made a mess of my MacBook this time.

  • ITunes No Longer Runs--iTunes Helper Resources Not a Valid File Name

I made a dumb mistake (I think) and tried to install iTunes onto an SD card.  At first, my computer would only let me open iTunes if the SD card was installed.  I tried to reinstall to the C drive, but keep getting the "I Tunes Helper Resources not a Valid File Name" message.  At this point I want to uninstall everything and start over, but I'm afraid I'll lose my music.  I still have all the files but, of course, none will open since I don't have a properly installed iTunes anymore.   Would appreciate any assistance in uninstalling, reinstalling and saving my current music files.

Here's what I decided to do.  Fortunately, all the files were still available, so I simply backed them up from my iTunes Music Library onto a 32 GB flash drive then transferred the new stuff onto an older computer in my office with an older version of iTunes.  I had to do this in several shifts since I have more than 32GB of music.  Everything that transferred plays well.  Next I'll try to wipe iTunes completely off the new computer, reinstall an older version of iTunes and then reload all the files onto the new computer.  What a PITA!
