Itunes took up a huge amount of space when restoring iphone.

I updated itunes recently and it deleted all of my music.  So I had to spend quite a while redoing all of my playlists and music.  To get all of this back on my phone I had to delete everything currently on my iphone.  After I did this it freed up 12 gb of space.  But when I tried to fill that space back up with my music and new playlists it told me that it couldn't because I had synced my phone with another computer, which I had never done.  It then decided to fill that free space up with "other".  So I had to then delete everything on my phone and restore from a backup.
After I deleted everything and went to restore it it told me I didn't have enough space on my computer.  When I looked to see how much free space I had available I was shocked to see that I only had 14mb free.  I'm not sure of the exact space I had left prior to trying the restore but it was at least 10gb.  So I deleted a bunch of stuff I had backed up to give me about 6gb of free space.  I tried the restore again only to get the same message.  This time I had 1mb free on my computer.  So I deleted 28gb of video files.  This time it went forward with the restore but afterwards I had only 18gb of space free on my computer.  The bottom line is that these restores filled my computer up with probably 25-30gb of space and I can not find where these huge backups are stored.
I tried deleting the old backups through the itunes preferences sections, but it only freed up less than a gigabyte.  I did some googling and people are saying they are stored (on windows) in Username>AppData>Roaming>Apple Computer>MobileSync>Backup.  But I don't seem to have that option on my computer.
I need to free this space back up and I am completely lost and pretty annoyed with itunes.  Any help would more appreciated than you know.

When updating my iphone with new software it came up on screen with the cable and itunes sign (which is what I should get when restoration has been completed) yet it is still saying restore. I have tried 3 times and the screen won't change. HELP!

If the sign does not go away it has not completed the restore. So you are incorrect when you say it "keeps completing the restore" if that message is still displayed.
Do you get an error message? If so, what is the error number?

  • Thumbnails taking huge amount of space?

I'm considering migrating my iPhoto library to Aperture, and the one thing that is concerning me the most is the amount of space it takes, particularly thumbnails.
The previews don't seem to be taking that much, but thumbnails do. I haven't done any too-extensive tests but from what I see, the "AP.*" files inside an ".approject" seem to be huge.
eg: one project that has 11MB worth of photos has:
    - 27MB AP.Thumbnails file
    - 6MB AP.Minis file
This means that these "thumbnails" are actually over 3 times the size of the actual pictures :O Now I have 3MP JPEGs in those folders and I'm sure the ratio between thumbs and RAWs for instance is much lower, but still this is a significant chunk of space :/
In comparison an entire iPhoto library of mine is 6GB and the thumbnails in it take up 250MB.
Is there anything that can be done about this? thx

  • Error: "not enough space to restore iPhone backup" but..8+gb free

    Hello,
I have an iPhone 4 running ios 7.0.6. Since it's pretty slow I decided to try backup&restore. Opened iTunes (updated at the latest version yesterday), created a backup (took only a couple of mins, while it used to take dozens at least. Not sure if this is a good thing since the progress bar didn't show the step from 1 to 7 but only a continuos progress bar with no caption but "backing up"), hitted the "restore backup" button, but a couple of minutes later a pop up said "Can't restore your backup because there's not enough free space on the iPhone" (or something similar). The iPhone rebooted as usual.
I saw tons of discussions with this topic but the problem is I have almost 9 gb of free space in a 32gb total capacity!
    What can I do?
    Thanks for your help,
    Andrea

Sorry I missed that important bit of detail.
    I would try the following:
Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes completely, then trying to restore from backup. (You may want to follow their guide to uninstalling iTunes and related applications since there's a specific sequence to that. More here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925 )
Alternatively, and this may take longer but I've found it helpful in the past, try restore to factory settings once and then, after activating your iPhone and logging in as you, try restore from backup, but from the backup from before your iOS update of course.

    I restarted my computer
The only i thing i have plugged in is the iphone itself( im using a laptop)windows 8.1
If anyone can help me to solve my problem .
    Thanks in advance.

In the article Resolve iOS update and restore errors this is what it says about error 1:
    Check for hardware issues
    Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

There's always a solution for a problem. So don't worry about what's going on withyour iOS device. Just follow these steps. I hope It will help you.
    Setp - 1.
First of all, make sure that you're device have at least 50% battery. If not, charge your device properly to 50% or higher battery percentage then continue to step 2.
Download a latest version of your iPhone firmware from here:
    http://www.idownloadblog.com/download/
    Step - 2.
Connect your device to your computer and launch iTunes.
    Step - 3.
Power off your device by pressing and holding power button.
    Step - 4
Now get ready to put your device into recovery mode as following steps:
Hold down the sleep/power button and home button together for exactly 10 seconds, then release the power button
Continue to hold down the Home button until a message appears in iTunes telling you an iPhone in recover mode has been detected
When you are in DFU mode your iPhone screen will be completely black
    Step - 5
Simply click 'OK' button on that message and click 'iPhone' on top-right corner of your iTunes window.
    Step - 6
Now you can see 'Restore' button there. Just press and hold your computer's 'Shift' key and click the 'Restore" button and load your latest iOS firmware file.
Wait until the setup will finish. When the setup will complete, you're done.

  • IOS 5 bug - album artwork takes huge amounts of space

I've upgraded both my iPhone 4 and my iPad 1 to iOS 5.
Under iOS 4, the "Other" data reported by iTunes on these devices wasn't significant.
Under iOS 5, both report over 1.5GB for "Other". By browsing around the phone with iExplorer, it seems that most of this is an enormous album art database file called MediaLibrary-artwork.data in the iTunes_Control\iTunes folder - this alone is over 1.5GB. There are no more than 200 albums on either device, all of which have artwork downloaded from the Apple Store rather than embedded in the files - say 200 x 250kb JPEGs; 50MB in total.
Why is this file so huge under iOS 5? It wasn't under iOS 4 - it's wasting 5% of the space on my 32GB iPhone!
I've tried removing music and movies, deleting the iTunes_Control folder and resyncing - all this does is to shrink the file down from 1.5GB to 875MB - still orders of magnitude bigger than it needs to be.
    Something is broken here, Apple...

I cannot really see this on my iPhone but this could be an explanation for many users seeing coverflow being sluggish (too much RAM taken up by the huge album artwork).

I have an iPhone 4 and an iPad 1, and I had Mobile Me,, so I have 25GB of iCloud storage, but my current Storage is syaing it is taking up 9.99 GB of 25 GB, 9.1 for my iPad 1 and 5.9 for my iPhone. Now I have a lot of books and PDF's on my iPad, but not nearly that many, and my iPhone has next to nothing but apps on it. And both iOS devices say that the backup is incomplete. Does that mean it will get bigger?

  • Huge amounts of space

When I click on my library within iPhoto, it says I have something like 1.8 gigs worth of pictures. But when I use Finder to "get info" on the iPhoto library in my user folder, it shows 7.47 gigs. Why the difference?

Ah ha, the infamous caches. Here are a couple of things you can do to regain some additional real estate on your HD.
1 - run either Cache Out, OnyX or Mac Sweeper to clean out the various cache and archived log files.
2 - run DeLocalizer to remove the unneeded language modules. I saved 900+MB the first time I ran it. It will run under Panther.
    Good luck.

  • I seem to have used up all my broadband (huge amount) very quickly with my iphone - is there anything in the settings of my iphone that I may have set up incorrectly to make this happen ?   As cannot see it is possible to use this much.

I seem to have used up all my wi-fi broadband extremely quickly (I have huge broadband limit) using my iphone, and not sure if I have something incorrectly set up in the settings of my iphone that has allowed this to happen?  Any ideas?   Haven't been watching any movies or downloading anything major.

    Hickeysm,
Do you mean your the download limit set by your Internet Service Provider for all broadband use? Or the data allowance from your phone network provider for your iPhone?
If you mean the phone contract's data allowance, I have a similar problem. I had a message from O2 yesterday to say I've used 80% of my monthly data allowance, which is very unusual for me. I may have found the cause which is that my iPhone is reluctant to connect to Wifi, and when it does, no data moves; so it's been accessing data with 3G. Nothing wrong with my wifi (iPad and iMac connect without problems).
I'm suspecting the iOS 5.1 update. Has anyone else had similar problems since taking it?

  • Quad G5 requiring huge amounts of power when waking? (Overloads Back-UPS!)

I have an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), an APC Back-UPS RS 1500 (model BR1500). It is rated to deliver 865 W (1500 VA).
When I woke my PowerMac G5 Quad from sleep a couple days ago, I got an overload warning on my UPS for the first time ever. After speaking to the support person at APC, he decided to send me a replacement because even with everything disconnected from the UPS, the overload indicator still stayed on, and a "cold start" didn't solve it. Basically, my Quad killed the UPS. I thought maybe it was just an isolated incident.
Today, while I'm waiting for the replacement from APC, I borrowed an APC Back-UPS XS 1500 (BX1500) from a friend. It has the same power capacity as my model. A few minutes ago, I woke my Quad G5 from sleep and AGAIN I got an overload warning from the UPS. I turned off the UPS, disconnected my Quad, and turned the UPS back on again. This time, the UPS seems okay. It didn't "die" like my BR1500.
I've had this Quad G5 for about 7 months, and I wake it from sleep perhaps 5-10 times a day. Until a couple days ago, I never had an overload warning on either the BR1500 or the BX1500. Now I'm afraid to put my Quad to sleep. I'm not sure why this is happening twice in a few days, while it never happened during the thousands of times I've woken the G5 from sleep before.
According to Apple's knowledgebase, the Quad can require as much as 550 W when working on processor intensive tasks. I don't know how much it is requiring when waking from sleep. Both of these UPS can deliver 865 W (1500 VA).
Any help or insights would be very much appreciated.

    Doc-
I don't see anything at all in the APC document regarding inrush current. Maybe I am missing something.
You say that this hasn't happened before and to two different units. I still refer to my original post where I stated that you may indeed need a more robust UPS, but my gut rtells me this is not it.
I don't know where you are geographically located, but where I am we just went through some unusually hot weather. That put a huge strain on the electrical grid to keep up. Has the AC by any chance been on in the building when this has happened?
I do not know the technical expertise of the person from the post that measured various current draws, but generally one does not do that with an oscilloscope. You can, but generally it is easier to clamp an amp meter to the line and measure it that way. An o-scope would require a big resistor and access to the physical wire inside of the Mac's power cable, not to mention the math needed to compute the current readings. I can assure you that if that Mac drew that much power at any point it would at minimum trip the circuit breaker.
Try this: plug the Mac and the UPS into the same outlet but don't plug anything into the UPS. Put the Mac to sleep and wake it up. Does it still cause the UPS to kick in? If so, that would definitely point towards the incoming line.
Nothing else really makes sense here. I don't know why you draw more instantaneous power when awakening as opposed to cold boot but I guess that the Mac has some sort of "soft start" where it doesn't slam the power supply all at once with things powering up but does it more methodically.
Although it may be the UPS, I would start looking at environmental and infrastructure elements.
    Luck-
