ITunes transfer from PC to Mac, and now no playlists!

I just got a new MacBook Pro and transferred all my music from my old PC's external hard drive. But instead of restoring my library the .xml way, I did it the Add to Library way. Only now, all my playlists are gone! Is there any way to get them all back, or do I have to start all over again?

You don't need to edit the .xml file or any file for that matter. All you need to do is to open iTunes. Go to File > Add to Library, it will open a window to locate your music. Select the songs, videos, etc that you want to add to iTunes. Also, iTunes will organise your iTunes media in the iTunes directory within Music (~Music/iTunes). So you would not need to manually copy the songs to the Music folder.

Followed the whole process of copying my itunes (v7) from windows xp to my ipod, and then to my mac (itunes v7).... but now I cant see any music in my mac itunes... help!! been researching this for hours and cant find an answer...

try the following:
1. I assume your ipod is in windows format
2. get Senuti - http://www.fadingred.org/senuti/ this software can copy songs from an ipod back onto a computer. It doesn't matter which format the ipod is
3. follow the instructions on Senuti. To copy the songs over to you computer just select all of them in Senute and press the green "transfer" arrow.
4. I have done this 2 days ago and it works perfectly
5. After all the formating don't forget to reformat the ipod to macformat in case you want to use it with this machine

Unless you subscribe to iTunes Match , Apple does not keep a backup of your iTunes library. Even then it is not the library as it exists on your computer, but some version of the media, and only media files, not playlists. Even then not all media are definitely available since anything removed from the iTunes Store since you purchased it is not available for re-download.

In your case it sounds like you will have to obtain non iTunes purchases from their original source or a backup you may have made at some time in the past.

Hi,
I can't figure out how to transfer my itunes account from my PC to my mac laptop to save my life. I know that you can use an ipod to transfer it over, but I would prefer not to do it that way. Please help!

Do you wish to use an external hard drive? If so you can do that, or you can use a local network, or even CDs/DVDs (a lot of them if you have a lot of music.)
Let me know how you wish to transfer it and I'll be able to more accurately detail what you need to do.
And in case you ask, no, you can't simply request a re-download of all of your purchases on another computer. You will need to use some sort of method to transfer your files over.

Moving iTunes library from PC to Mac and running through an external HD?

I recently made the switch from a PC to my beautiful Macbook pro and I'm having some issues with my external hard drive. For the past few years I've been running my large iTunes library through an external hard drive, even switching hard drives and everything's worked perfectly. However I can't work out if it's possible or how to load the same library on my mac, I've just tried to open the library file but it says it is locked.
I feel I am missing a vital step... I'm just not sure what it is! Any help would be fantastic, losing my playlists and play counts after so long is just not an option!
I'm not sure if this is relevant, but the external hard drive is also ridiculously slow on the mac.

That is why I suggested the FAT 32 partition as I know it works on both.
true, but FAT32 has a +4 GB-per-file+ limit. a HD movie can easily exceed that limit and thus won't be copied. instead, one could format the drive for Mac and install MacDrive on the PC. or, format the drive NTFS and install the _*NTFS 3G*_ driver on the Mac.

Excel files are locked since transfer from pc to mac

I just transferred my excel files from pc to mac and now i can't open them, it says they are "locked for editing" by user (i did not lock them) i can only open as read only. Is there a fix for this problem? Anyone else had this problem?

Where are these files saved??

This problem is caused by a temporary file that was not deleted after a previous edit session was completed. The file is hidden and not normally visible through the Finder. The easiest way to view hidden files is to install the hidden files dashboard widget which is available here:

Use the widget to show hidden files then use Finder to open the folder that contains the spreadsheet you wish to edit. If your spreadsheet is named abc.xlsx, you will also see a file named ~$abc.xlsx. Delete the file that begins with ~$ and you will be good to go.

Connect the iPhone to your Mac, launch iTunes.
If you haven't done this yet, go to the iTunes menu bar click Store / Authorize This Computer
Now from the iTunes menu bar again, click File / Transfer Purchases From...

These question marks are on your dock? And you can't open applications from your dock?
If so, try this: Open a new finder window and navigate to the Applications folder in your hard disk. The applications in question should still be in there (the Applications folder). So drag each of the application icons that you want to be available on your dock from the Applications folder onto your dock, one by one. Take each of your question mark icons that are on the dock and drag them off the dock to get rid of them. See if that fixes you up.
Now, if your hard disk no longer has an Applications folder in it, or the Applications folder is empty, you are going to have to reinstall OS 10.6 then do a software update to bring you back up to OS 10.6.8. You may be able to just go to the "optional installs" folder on the installer DVD and maybe all the stock applications are there -- I don't remember and I don't have an installer DVD handy to look. That would be way easier than doing a full blown OS reinstall. Also, as I recall, if OS 10.6 was on the computer when you bought it from the store, I think there should be an "extras" DVD that has a handful of applications that could be reinstalled from it, too.

Copy them from your old computer, or your backuo copy of your old computer. to your new one.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. the exception is itunes purchases.
