ITunes, Two ways to share?

The whole iTunes sharing / home sharing has left me confused.  Here is what I would like to do:  Share selected playlists from itunes from Mac A to Mac B&C.  Also, allow Macs B&C to import over items as they choose into their libraries.
I went to Mac A -> iTunes - > Preferences - > Sharing.  Selected share "my playlist"
Result: Mac B&C can see and play songs from "my playlist" but cannot import songs.
Next I went to Mac A - > iTunes - > Advanced - > Turn on Home Sharing -> Signed in
Repeated for Macs B&C
Result: Macs B&C can see Mac A's whole library.  Home sharing seems to ignore any restrictions you put on sharing under preferences. But you can import tracks as you please.
Are these two separate methods for sharing one legacy and one new with home sharing?  That seems horribly confusing.  Is there no way to restrict Home sharing to age approprate material (manually or automatically)?
thanks,
Hotoru

  • HT202213 Two Itunes libraries on one computer.  Any way to share content between the two libraries?

We have 2 ITunes libraries on one computer.  Is there a way to share movies, music, etc. between the two libraries?

To your second question, probably the easiest way is to set up another user account on your machine. Then when that user opens iTunes, it will be a new library (empty) that they can put anything they want into, and not corrupt your library.
With another user account, they can also customize their own desktop photo, desktop icons, etc. so lots of benefits doing it that way. Works out great for me and my 13 year old daughter so I don't have to see the latest Emo band hearthrob's face on my desktop.

  • Is there a way to share one music library with two seperate icloud accounts?

Is there a way to share one music library with two seperate icloud accounts? I have over 12,000 songs in my library and my son likes the same music, but recently his ipod touch is picking up the texts from my wife's and my phone? I was told the only way to stop this is by giving him his own icloud account which would mean he wouldn't have access to my music library. Any ideas?

He can still use your Apple ID for iTunes content, no issues. He just gets a separate ID for everything else.

  • Best way to share Time Capsule iTunes folder between multiple PC's & users?

We are happily using a 2T Time Capsule and Genie Timeline to back up computer files. However, our main iTunes computer is a laptop which is quickly running out of disk space. So we hope to share an iTunes directory on the Time Capsule between two pc's with multiple users.
Q#1) Does each windows user need to connect as the same Time Capsule user? Or is there a way to share a folder amongst several Time Capsule users? (We have several Time Capsule users set up, but I don't know how to configure it so one can see files created by another.)
Q#2) Once the shared directory is established and everyone can see it from both computers, is this the correct procedure:
    a) On the main iTunes pc, change the iTunes Media Folder to the shared Time Capsule folder
    b) Consolidate the library
    c) Import music files from the other pc as necessary. (Can we do this? Some are protected aac files.)
    d) Change the iTunes Media Folder on the second pc to the shared Time Capsule folder. (How do you grant permission for the other pc to use the shared iTunes Media Folder?)
Apologies if I all this has been answered already. I was unable to find it in my searches.

  • Any way to share idvd project with itunes?

    hi everyone,
I needed to know if there is any way to share an idvd project with itunes, in the same way that you can an imovie project with chapters and themes etc and then ideally to play it on your ipod as you would on a dvd player, selecting chapters etc.
    Would much appreciate any comments.

Well, there are two solutions to your problem:
    - convert your movies to DVD. Advantages: better quality, menus, chapters.
    - do the movies for iPod, but break them in smaller pieces, so you can jump to the next scene when needed. Advantage: smaller size, can be used on iPod.
Another possible solution is presented here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=791841. I'm not sure it will work, and I'll appreciate if you will try and let us know the results (I don't have a video iPod myself).
later edit: Sorry, I was wrong: HandBrake CAN decrypt commercial DVDs. It's a beautiful free tool.

Home Sharing, which seems to be what you're describing, needs iTunes 9 or later.

  • What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?

What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?
Currently I have a common itunes library in a shared folder that each user is linked to.  The problem is that when one user adds music to the shared file, it does not automaticaly appear to other users when they open their iTunes.  They have to go to the shared library and select the new music in order to make it visable in their iTunes.
Would iTunes file shareing fix this problem?
    Thanks

Rick, are you saying that if you try to share a folder outside of home and use sharepoints, then the other mac wont prompt you to log in? Have you tried that? It is hard to believe that is the case
I am sort of saying that. Have you tried it? I know it's hard to believe, but you really need to help us out by trying some steps that you don't believe.
We can't see what your exact situation is. We sort of know what's worked for us out here. Just trying to help you get this going in less than 24 hours!
Sharepoints manages the samba configuration file. It's free software that puts a pretty face on an otherwise cumbersome config file.
    Give it a shot.
windows will not prompt for passwords, I have tried this with multiple computer at home for both vista and xp
As I stated. You will not get prompted on windows, if you have set up sharing in an insecure fashion. You are not using a secured sharing situation.
    No argument with your statement.

  • DD got new laptop(Windows 8). I would like for her to have her own iTunes account.  However she has been syncing her iPod to my account for 2years and has an abundance of music/movies that we don't want to buy again.  Any way to share them to her new PC?

My daughter got a new laptop for Christmas (windows 8).  I would like to set up her own iTunes account on her laptop.  Our dilema is she has been syncing her iPod to my account for 2 years now, therefore, she has an abundance of music (purchased through iTunes store) and movies (downloaded via digital download from DVD/BluRay purchases) that we don't want to have to purchase all over again.  Is there any way to share some/all of my account with her so she can sync her iPod to her laptop in the future?
I have been reading about Home Sharing but I am not sure this is the approach I am after.  Will home sharing work to allow her to alter and change the content on her PC without changing/altering it on mine?  Will it allow her to sync her iPod with her PC?
I suppose I should also add that we are currently running 2 iPod touches, 2 iPads and an iPhone from my apple ID.  I am not even sure if I would be able to add her PC as a device for home sharing if that is an option for us.
Any and all guidance is greatly appreciated.

  • Anyone knows if there's a way to share files between ipads wihtout using the itunes software?

I've been trying with some apps to do this but there's always a prior step in which you have to drag the files to the app using ITUNES. Someone knows if there's a way to share files without using this program?

Every file has to be associated with an app. So you can't avoid that. You could look into something like dropbox, where you access the info online, and I believe, download it via the dropbox app then 'send' it to the app that'll read/open it.

No idea what this folder is. Sounds like it is something you created & named.

This is the default folder iTunes uses for music.

  • Two iPhones, One MBP - Best way to share?

So, my husband just got an iPhone. I will get one soon, but not for a few months. I have a MBP, where the iTunes library lives. When he got an iPod we simply sync'd it with my library... multiple iPods, no prob.
Well, now with the iPhone, he will want to sync Cal, Address Books, iTunes, etc. Should we set up a separate account on the MBP? If we do, he cannot access my iTunes library. Or should we add it to my iTunes, just like the iPods. If we register his iPhone in my iTunes account, can I add another iPhone later, will he still get his own bill? Will my iTunes purchases still be billed to my account?
In short - what is the best way to share a iTunes library with multiple users?

  • How do I set up itunes sync with outlook to "replace information on this iphone" only? I do not want to do a two way sync.

I am tired of fighting sync incompatibilities between Outlook 2007 and I Tunes, and no longer want to do a two-way sync.
I still want my Outlook contacts and calendar on my iPhone and use advanced setup in iTunes to "replace information on this iPhone" only.
iTunes only offers the ability to do this on "the next sync only". Is there a way to set up iTunes to "replace information on this iPhone" every time I connect my phone?

    Hi there Greg,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to always replace content on your iPhone 5S with content from Outlook on your PC, to do this you’ll just have to Reset the Sync History in iTunes as shown below.
Troubleshooting Sync Services on Windows with Microsoft Outlook 2003, Outlook 2007, or Outlook 2010 - Apple Support
    To reset sync history:
    Open iTunes.
From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
    Click the Devices tab.
Click the Reset Sync History button.
If the issue continues and you know all of the data is on the computer:
Reset the Sync History again using the steps above.
Select the device in iTunes and click the Info tab.
Scroll down to the Advanced section, and under "Replace information on this iPhone/iPad/iPod touch" select Contacts or Calendars.
    Click Apply.
    Cheers,
    -Jason

  • Best way to share itunes

I am wandering what the best overall way to share a multiterabyte itunes library is. Currently I have 2 imac each with 3 accounts (6 users total). between Movies TV Music and Apps I am about to break 3TB Currently I am using a Drobo FS and SMB but this honestly ***** since there is no seemless way. I have done a Single iTunes Library xml file but ended up with locking issues. I have tried Home sharing but kept ending up with duplicates (which i honestly can't afford) when they would sync the new content. There has to be some wonderful way to get this done. any input would be greatly appreciated..

Well you can turn auto sync off. I run a mac mini as my media server with iTunes home sharing on. I've 2TB of Movies and Music on it which runs fine. I would recommend running a Mac as a dedicated media server, it works really well without too much lag. I tried with airdisk on the Airport Extreme but it would often freeze up the disk. Since I've had my mini I've not had any problems with it for streaming media.
