ITunes U Basic Access

I am an iTunes newbee. I have been trying to set up our iTunes U site using basic authentication for course tracks. However, I can only get downloads to work by making them public. At this point, we don't want to use a transfer script.
Basically, I want one password per course. The student would click to download a track, and it would ask for a password. The same password would access each track in a course.
If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
April

Hi April,
With the excetpion of AppleIDs (which can be used to administer an iTunes U site), iTunes U does not deal with passwords at all. There is no way to assign a password to an iTunes U course. In addition, iTunes does not give you a way to display a password dialog when a student clicks on a course because Apple does not deal with authentication. In effect, Apple defers authentication to us.
However…
You -could- use the same -credential- for every course at your site. This would likely do the very same thing you want to do with passwords. You could assign the credential to everyone who authenticates to your iTunes U portal website. Have you had a chance to explore how credentials work in iTunes U yet?

How do i get my TC to house my main itunes library and access it as if it was on my hardrive?

Have you considered that if you move your iTunes Library / Media Folder to the Time Capsule drive......you will have your "master" or "original" library on the Time Capsule drive?
When....not if.....you have an issue with the Time Capsule drive, you have no backup for iTunes Library / Media Folder.....and you lose everything in the library.
So, before you consider moving the Library to the Time Capsule disk, it would be a good idea to develop a backup plan for the library / media folder first.
To develop your backup plan.....(Time Machine will not work for this).....you will need to use another commercially available application that can copy data from a network drive.....like Carbon Copy Cloner or Chronosync....then you can move the iTunes Library / Media Folder from your Mac.

You seem to have an iTunes problem and not an iPod problem. The iTunes forum is likely a better forum to post in.

Many thanks JEM24 for your help.  Ive just spent the best part of six hundred pounds on a new Sony Rx100m2 compact camera, so I have no interest in the Ipods camera at all really. I doubt Ill be watching many videos on it as Im very lucky in that I have a good Android tablet. Its more as a stock music player that Ill be buying the Ipod for, if indeed I do end up buying one. I dont like the idea of paying the exorbitant amount added for more memory space that Apple along with most other companies charge. In fact I read an article on this very subject just yesterday in the tech section of Flipboard. It stated in the article that in the case of the Iphone  the actual cost of each additional  gigabyte of storage  to Apple et al is something in the order of 60p.. This is certainly not reflected in the price us the customer has to pay at the till.. Its for this reason primarily that Apple in particular, because their products do not allow adding expandable memory of your own in the form of cheap to buy cards, that nobody in their right mind buys the 64gig etc Iphones..I am aware that we are discussing my potential purchase of an Ipod Touch here but you see my point. Many thanks again though for helping me.

  • ITunes U Public Access Issue -- iTunes Fails to Launch

    Hello,
I've been notified of an issue with our iTunes U public access link. When users go to our itunes.clemson.edu page and try to access our public content via the Log In No ID Required link, iTunes does not launch.
This occurs when the user is off campus and not on the Clemson network (using IE). If the user VPN's into our network, things work as expected. This should not be a problem since the public content is available to anyone who wishes to view the Clemson iTunes U page.
We also have the same issue when users are off campus and try to gain access to our private content by authenticating with their campus userid and password. When they are on the Clemson network, everything is accessible, but when they are not, iTunes seems to be unavailable.
    You should try this...
    - go to itunes.clemson.edu
    - try to access the public content via the "Log In No ID Required" link and reply with what happens here. (The link is an image link on the right side of the page just under the Clemson on iTunes U banner)

Your users may be running into an issue specific to their browser. You might want to read these threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2404380
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2927738
Unfortunately there's behavior in some browsers that doesn't always launch iTunes successfully based on previous dialog messages the user may have dismissed or unknowingly choose the wrong option.

  • Since upgrade ios  and iTunes can't access homeshare on ipad

Since upgrade ios and iTunes can't access homeshare on ipad. I see 'share', when using music app on iPad. I click on it and then select my MacBook Pro. Circle starts goes half way the stops. My Apple TV works great. So iTunes on MacBook must be set up right.  Videos app is similar, the circle just spins and spins. My wifi is an apple airport. I beginning to think I have invested badly. I have signed out and in  again of home share on iPad and MacBook  as advised. I have read and re-read. Is there a solution?

    Hello Gary,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Home Sharing.  It sounds like you are not able to access iTunes from your iPad using Home Sharing.  I found an article with steps that I think would help with this issue.
I recommend reviewing the full article below, but I think steps 4-7 are specifically useful for what you described:

With those symptoms (assuming you're getting this on iTunes for Windows), I'd try the following document:

(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

    Hello,
I'm trying to use a webview to display a web site using Basic access authentication.
    I've downloaded the samples.
With SwingInterop_browser.jnlp a popup ask the username/password and everything is working fine
    With SwingInterop.jar i get an 401 - Unauthorized
There is probably an arg to pass to the java -jar command...
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance

We are further forward and have come up with the following approach. We are publishing the output to an an unprotected area. The basic authentication can then be applied to the Tomcat Server as required.

I'm having trouble with iTunes synching and accessing the iTunes store.   When synching, the process tops at the back up stage, freezes and I can't close the iTunes window, need to ctrl alt del.   When trying to access the store, the progress bar stops halfway.   I've googled heaps and tried most of the standard answers - unistall, reinstall, etc, now looking for some help please.
This has only started a few weeks back, after working smoothly for the 2 years of owning the iPhone 3gs.
Any suggestions will be appreciated, it's getting realy frustrating.
    Cheers for now,

i can't enter the pass code in the disabled iPad!

You can unlock it on another computer though the content will be wiped and I think that you need to put it into DFU mode e.g. see post https://discussions.apple.com/message/15385719#15385719 in thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/15385641#15385641 .
    From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212 :
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.

  • My iPad 2 wifi iTunes can't access to stores even I log into wifi network

Hi I got a iPad 2 wifi lately. However I realise that the iTunes can't access to store despite I have logged on and off and ensure restriction is turned off.  I even re-register my apple ID and restore the system.  Any suggestion?

Does the App Store or other apps that use the internet work ok e.g. Safari ? Depending on what country you are in you may not see much in the store as not all content types are available in all countries.
Have you tried closing the iTunes app completely and seeing if it works when you re-open it ? From the home screen (i.e. not with iTunes 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the iTunes app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
