ITunes U course reports

I have a public site on iTunes U with many collections. I just created a course using material from various collections of mine. How will video/podcast downloads from within the course be reported? Do I see what tracks were downloaded within a course? If not, every time a video is played within the course does that get logged in my regular collection reports?

Hi Syd,
I'm a colleague of Emma's doing dev work on this project. What we really require is access to the GetDailyReportLogs API call to automate the statistics.
It has been incredibly difficult to find sample code to invoke this call, the documentation doesn't do a great job of explaining what specifically is required, and the forums are not much help either. Although I think I now have our secret appropriately encoded, things are vague on exactly what credentials are required in these calls. All I am able to get back from the API is a Forbidden error.
My test URL:
https://deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/API/GetDailyReportLogs/[[ouruniversity-ac-uk]]-public-dz?StartDate=2010-01-01&EndDate=2010-02-02&creden tials=Administrator%40urn%3Amace%3Aitunesu.com%3Asites%3A[[ouruniversity-ac-uk]] -public-dz&identity=%22Dan%22+%3C[[myemailaddress]]%3E+%28dfsdfds%29+%5Bsdfewere %5D&time=1352573236&signature=[[our64bitkey]]
I've replaced the sensitive info with [[vals]], but if you are able to explain from that why I get a Forbidden that'd be greatly appreciated. Note that I have an administator account in the Site Manager associated with [[myemailaddress]].
Many thanks,
Dan

I am unable to log into iTunes u course manager on ipad3. I get a message that my browser is not supported but I am using safari

    You are welcome, WonderProfessor.
Updating iTunes may not be the reason at all. It could very well be the Support Team has fixed the problem, which i think is the case.
Also, I learned i should report EACH problem to iTunes U Support Team using its Report Form:
    https://ssl.apple.com/support/itunes-u/public-site-manager/contact.html
I used the Report Form a couple of months ago to report a different problem. One tech support person responsded and I have been emailing to that individual via email about a few more issues since then. This, however, is NOT a good practice. Reporting each problem using the report form will help the iTunes Support Team to prioritize the work based on urgency.
Anyway, I am releaved it is working now. Thank you. And thanks to the iTunes U Support Team and iTunes U Editors.

How do I enter an iTunes U course code in iTunes on a PC? My teacher gave me a course code to enroll in their course (unpublished), but I don't have an iPad or iPhone. Can I use iTunes on my PC? I don't see a place to enter my enrollment code. I also tried using the link sent to enroll but it doesn't work either.  Am I out of luck?

As I noted in the other thread:
There are two kinds of content available, "courses" and "collections". If you look at the iTunes U section on the iTunes Store, you'll note some are square (collection) and some have a faux wire binder and tabs (course); you can subscribe and watch collections from within iTunes, but courses only work on iOS.
The content you see in iTunes on your PC are "collections", while your teacher has created a "course". Collections are more like podcasts, with only audio or video episodes available. Courses have more structure and richer content, including assignments and iOS-specific materials like App Store links and Pages documents.
While the distinction is not particularly relevant for iOS users – one can subscribe to either type – it is admittedly confusing for desktop users since the distinction and terminology are not explicitly defined.
    Does that clarify matters somewhat?

  • I added a new post to my iTunes U course and it is not showing up on one of my student's iPads.  She has only one Apple ID on the iPad. Any assistance is appreciated.

A new post to my iTunes U course shows up in my course both on my Mac and my iPad Air, as well as on other students' iPads, but for one single student.  We have closed the app and forced shutdown.  Student recently added more icloud space, but that is all.  iPad is up-to-date in terms of iOS and iTunesU app.  The student has only one Apple ID associated with her iPad.
We have reposted two more times.  The second time the post showed up for a few seconds, but then disappeared.  It does not show up under any other section (assignments, discussions, etc).  Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Have you contacted Apple support?
I don't know if these will work, but you could have the student try the following:
logout of his or her iTunes U (i.e., iTunes Store) account using Settings
    force-quit iTunes U
    relaunch iTunes U
sign in to the newly launched app when prompted
    I hope that helps!

If you haven't already done so then you can contact iTunes support via this page and ask them why the message is appearing (these are user-to-user forums, we won't know why) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

Regarding iTunes U courses, would I be able to link to books/sites (like say an amazon hardback book or link to a kindle book they can purchase and download).  Considering that not all books are available on iBooks I'm hoping this is allowed.   Also the possibility on monetizing since amazon gives commission for linking.
This question is for both the uncredited (private) courses and the bigger accredited accounts.    I am a  developer trying to learn how to help my area schools and also have some ideas for my own courses.    Obviously keeping within the iTunes U app would be preferred in most cases (to the learning experience) since they can take notes and see them within the app itself.
If the reply comes from a non-apple employee please let me know (or better yet, link to) where that is clarified.   I would hate to develop something just to later find out it is against the apple iTunes U agreement.

    Fair question
And, to be even more fair, I have to tell you that I get that every single day. And it's getting worse (or better, depending on how you look at it).
I always try to let people know it's a long way until you get to a confortable point, a point where you can create something. And that's exactly what I am trying to do, or at least asking how/if I should do it. And then I let them know where to start. That's what I want.
    Thanks.

I bought an App last month, doesn't work. consulted the manufacture they sent me to iTunes for refund, reported the problem to iTunes, they sending me back to Manufacturer. Can someone please assist me on this, I need my refund for this non functional App. BSSoft and iTunes Stores do something here, when I go back to report it again, I get an error message stating "...this problem has been reported or too old to report..."

    Debit card? Are you sure?
USA iTunes Store does not appear to accept debit cards - http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/terms.html  "The iTunes Store, Mac App Store, App Store, and iBookstore services (“Services”) accept these forms of payment: credit cards issued by U.S. banks, payments through your PayPal account, iTunes Cards, iTunes Store Gift Certificates, Content Codes, and Allowance Account balances."

  • ITunes U courses listings out of order? Hegarty - Coding Together

Paul Hegarty's iTunes U course named "Coding Together - Apps for iPhone and iPad" lists its courses in a confusing order, it seems. (See image below).  The number system is inconsistently applied and out of order, the dates are jumbled, etc.
How can I know what order to take the courses?  (Believe me, I've tried to find the answer before posting this).

Set your track numbers correctly (by right clicking, clinking 'Get Info' and clicking on the info tab), and make sure you also set the totals (e.g. 12 of 18 - the "of 18" is what I mean by the totals). This sorted it out on my iPod.
This worked for me for my Teaching Company files. They were all jumbled previously because they took the track numbers from the default import from the internet. Once I changed it, no problem.
It would be better if Apple allowed just a dragging, or if there was a quick tool, but at least this works.
I had previously been using "Join Together" for stuff like this. I think I like this method better, though. I can still keep the individual lecture files on a playlist, but not have to worry about all the separate titles in a general listing.

  • Compiling iTunes U Usage Reports?

Has someone come up with a good way to compile the iTunes U Reports into something useful? I appreciate Apple's "iTunes U: Usage report" for knowing what tracks are getting hits, but putting the data together week by week is a pain. I was wondering if someone had figured out a better way? Thanks for any help or suggestions.

I used good ol' fashion Perl to create a web app for distributing stats to our various internal players.
I cron job GetDailyReportLogs once a night to get the stats, then use Perl to parse the stats into meaningful data for year, month, series, episode, etc. Then, my favorite part, I use Perl's Data::Serializer to save all these data to files.
When a user loads the app, I just pull up the already processed data file and pass it to HTML::Template files. Because the data are already in the correct format for my various line charts, bar graphs and tables, the page loads very quickly and I'm not reprocessing the same data over and over, and I'm using AJAX to pull in the template for each chart individually.
So, using the iTunes U web services and Perl, I was able to pretty easily create a web app that lets users dig through their own usage stats. They can view top series, total downloads, most viewed episodes for the year, month, series, etc.
Perl might be old fashion, but I still love it.

  • View private iTunes U course from PC

Is it not possible to access materials as a student in a private iTunes U course from a PC? How about from a Mac but without having to go through an iPhone or iPad?
    Thanks

    Hello,
To access any content (info pages, posts, or materials) in a PRIVATE iTunes U course, you have to use an iOS device (iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch). PC or Mac computers WILL NOT do it.
Our college has a private iTunes U authentication server. We keep it because of this exact limitation of PRIVATE iTunes U COURSE. Our Private iTunes U collections can be assessed on iOS devices or any PC or MAC computer.
This limitation is only on PRIVATE iTunes U courses.
For the Public iTunes U courses, however, the users can access some of the Info pages (course description and outline) and the Materials (video, audio, PDF, web links) on a PC or MAC computer.
    Hope this helps.

  • IE works fine with iTunes U, but if I try to load any section of iTunes U courses with Firefox, I always get an error message.

The error message always takes the following form (the particulars at the end differ for each university offering iTunes U courses):
Firefox can't find the file at itms://deimos3.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/berkeley.edu?ignore.mscache=3228344.

unfortunately the fiddler2 issuer in certificates might be a sign of unwanted software present on your pc that is intercepting secure network traffic. please go into the system control panel and uninstall programs like BrowserSafeguard, BrowserSafe, SafeGuard or other software that sounds suspicious and didn't get installed by you intentionally.

  • Do iTunes U courses have to be free?

    Hi there,
In theory, would getting people to pay online using something like paypal to allow enrolment in an iTunes U course be allowed? I realise it's not really in keeping with the idea of iTunes U, but our company are spending a lot of time creating these courses and are independent from a particular institution.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

iTunes U does not allow charging for the online courses, though an institution can create private sites accessible only to students registered in an applicable course for which the student may have to pay tuition. iTunes U is not available to private companies, however, only to educational institutions and K-12 school districts. Here's their official statement:
iTunes U is a free service available to qualifying K-12 public school districts, and private schools, as well as two- and four-year accredited, degree-granting, public or private colleges and universities.
so if you're a private company, iTunes U will not be available to you.
    Regards.
