ITunes U files disappearing

For organizational purposes, I mark some of my own items as "iTunes U." These are personal lectures, etc. Anyway, lately when I put them on my iPhone, they don't show up as iTunes U -- they just disappear. I know how to find them to get them off the phone entirely -- but how do I get them to stop doing this and show up in my iTunes U app?

Dear Apple,
Please stop ignoring this extremely serious issue that is quite obviously very real for a great number of people. I have an external hardrive set up with YOUR time machine and it has worked very well over the past year with my iMac... until the sum of all backups became too large. I only noticed this after I had to disconnect my hardrive from my iMac when I needed to bring it into an Apple Store for repair. This was in December. Ever since, files of all kinds, especially songs, have been disappearing from my Finder Folder where my files are stored. Same old story as everyone else in this thread; songs, movies, books appear to be there but are followed by an grey circle with an exclamation point in it.
NOW, it is happening to my photos from iPhoto. A thumbnail appears in iPhoto but when I control click to find the file it is missing. VERY uncool, in fact there needs to be someone who address this issue quick. Poor customer service no matter how you look at it to not address it.
iTunes support is only available by email (big surprise) and they are of absolutely no help. Went back an forth a couple dozen times with a seemingly very nice support tech, but ultimately it was my faultt that the files are missing because "I should have them backed up", which I did until my time machine failed - then this problem began happening.
APPLE, PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. YOU ARE ******* YOUR CUSTOMERS OFF AND THAT'S NOT GOOD!

  • ITunes Library File - disappeared?

Out of the blue, a messaged popped up yesterday saying:
"The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. The required disk cannot be found."
I haven't been trying to move my library, or do anything out of the ordinary. Running iTunes 10, music files all reside on external drive. Have had this system in place for a long time without any problems.
    Two questions:
    1) What caused this to happen? How does a Library.xml file just up and vanish?
    2) How do I find/recreate the missing file? Main concern is preserving all the library data (playlists, star ratings, dates, etc.).
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

    me too, last couple months.
Disk Utility did find issues, but it repaired them, and yet the msg. keeps popping up every couple days.
Seems to correlate with my Mini being idle for a good part of the day (while I'm at work).
Hope to god this isn't iTunes giving me an early warning about a disk failure.

  • Itunes Music Files Disappearing

    Hi,
I have a very troubling problem going on right now and I don't know how to handle it...
I am running itunes 10.1.2 on a 10.6.6 macbook. I have a large itunes library (20,000+ songs) stored on a portable hard drive, which I have directed itunes to. A week or two ago, while scrolling through my library, I noticed, next to every song in an entire album, the gray circle with the exclamation point signaling that itunes could not locate the file. I went into my itunes folder on my external and went to where the album should have been... but it was gone. I went back to my itunes and went through it, and I found 6 or 7 more albums where the songs popped up with the exclamation point. I went into the itunes folder and the files were no longer there. I finished going through my library, deleted all the songs, and thought I had cleaned it out.
Last night, as I was going through, I found several more songs with the exclamation. I went to the albums and found that all the songs were missing. I went into the itunes folder, went to where the files should be/were at one time, and they were no longer there. I looked everywhere, but they were wiped clean from the hard drive.
In these past two incidences, I have had to delete over 1,000 songs, as they have disappeared from not only my library, but my itunes folder itself.
I have looked all over, but cannot seem to find a similar problem. I am starting to worry that my music will continue to disappear. If anyone has any thoughts concerning what might be happing or what I can do to fix this, please let me know. Thanks.

  • Itunes music files disappeared from HDD

    Hello,
After an update of itunes for Windows (10.4.0.80), I found out that almost all of my music library disappeared from my hard drive.
All music exist in itunes library, but when I try to play a song, a message appear telling me that the music file is missing.
I even tried using an undelete software, but I couldn't find any of my music files.
Do you know what went so wrong?
    Thank you

Your files are on your old computer, unless it has been wiped. Where else would you expect them to be?

The update 10.5 has created more grief as I cant sync my iPhone to my iTunes I have tried the file sharing as
I can't update anything but that's greyed over and I can't tick it?
Every time I open iTunes it opens then doesn't respond, so I have to close and reopen several times and
eventually I can play a tune at least, which I guess is what keeps me going ......... hahaha

  • ITunes library files disappeared!

I recently transferred my iTunes music library from an old computer to my new one, but now I tried to send a song to a friend, and I couldn't find it anywhere in my iTunes file : in this file, I only found the albums and songs that I had on my old computer; It seems that my songs are now in iTunes, but there's no other way to find them on my computer.
Does anybody know how this can be, and where I can look to find them back?
Is there a way to create a file like the one I had, but with all my music in it?

As previously mentioned. The problem is not with the library itself, but with the list of apps on the device for sync. Chris up there seems to share similar problem. We can see the list of apps on iTunes, but unable to see the list on the application tab on the device, therefore we are forced to sync the apps, with a warning to overwrite the apps on the device with those on the iTunes library.
I called up Apple iTunes support, and they claimed, you can only retrieve whatever you have downloaded, but unable to completely sync up with your device. If you have any apps downloaded but not installed on the device, if no longer available on iTunes, then you will no longer be able to access it.
Who has the know-how to get the app list back on the device's application tab?
    Thank you.

  • I have multiple libraries on an external drive. Somehow all the iTunes library files i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, Media folder, etc disappeared! Only the music files remain. Now when I start iTunes w/option it can't find any of the old libraries!

Help! I 'm using an old G4 powerbook, Mac OSX 10.5.8, iTunes ver 10. I have multiple iTunes libraries on an external drive. Everything was fine for a while, then all of the iTunes library files, i.e. iTunes Library.itl, xml, itdb, artwork folder, Media folder, etc mysteriously disappeared! Only the music files remain (thank god) So now when I start iTunes w/option key to choose a library, I can't choose any of them because iTunes won't recognize them. Because all the library stuff is missing. So can I re-create the library files? (I don't care if I lose my ratings)
Or should I create a new empty library on the external drive, then manually move all the music files to the Media folder in the new library?
I tried some stupid ideas like creating a new library just to start iTunes, then going into prefs and advanced, then under iTunes Media folder location, selecting the location of the old library on the external, to see if iTunes would then find all the music which is still there, but no workee.
I'm out of ideas, and I searched the archives.
    Help! anyone?
    Scott

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • Iphoto and itunes files disappeared when i upgraded to os mavericks. How can i access these files?

iphoto and itunes files disappeared when i upgraded to os mavericks. How can i retrieve these files? Time machine is not opening my backup files on an external Lacie HD.

Apple keeps books for a short time (used to be 40 days. I've not seen a recent time frame)
    What version did you have?
Books do nor exist except in the iPhoto database so you can not "find" a book vista TM. You restore a previous library (be sure NOT to overwrite your current library) and switch to it

Older Zens don't support AAC, which is the format iTunes uses for songs.
You can convert from AAC to MP3, which every media player under the sun will play.  Here's a tutorial: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12519_7-10096807-49.html

  • Why do windows source directory files disappear when their folder is added to iTunes?

I just got a new Windows 8 computer and installed iTunes. I then copied all of my music to my new computer from the old one into a similar \data\music directory organized by artist and album.
On the old computer (XP)when I add a folder from \data\music to itunes the source album music files remain inplace.
On the new computer (W8) when I add a folder from \data\music to itunes the source album music files disappear.
However, although the album directory is empty, the "parent MUSIC directory" hasn't changed in size. Is iTunes encrypting the source files? Itunes Help does have anything on this happening.
How do I access my source files if I want to do something with them?
This is scary stuff. Luckily I still have a copy on my old computer.
Any clarification on this would really be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Eric-B

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
iTunes 11 also adds a Home Videos folder...
Your library is obviously in the newer layout, the designated media folder (red outline) is C:\Data\Music and the option Keep iTunes Media folder organized is enabled, so music goes in C:\Data\Music\Music\<Artist>\<Album> etc.
If you're interested you could probably "normaiize" your library with a few carefully chosen steps...

  • I can't drag and drop iTunes music files into Roxio Jam 6 anymore and, now I have to import music one song at a time by using the " " or "-" buttons on the bottom. What is going on? G5 Dual 2 Ghz and OS 10.4.11

Hi. I have not used Roxio Jam for quite a long time and I just wanted to make a few CDs. Jam used to work easily and well. I have a problem. I can't drag and drop iTunes music files anymore and, now I have to import music one song at a time by using the "+" or "-" buttons on the bottom. What is going on? I trashed the preferences file and restarted Jam to no avail. I also have selected that Jam should open files with iTunes in the Jam preferences. I have a G5 DP 2Ghz PPC  machine with OS 10.4.11, iTunes 9.2.1 and Quicktime's version is 7.6.4. I have 2 GB of RAM and the machine has dual 1.25 Ghz. processors plus a 500 GB HD. Can anybody give me any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Larry

    I found an solution.
Uninstalling AirParrot as well as the two offending AirParrotDriver.kext and APExtFramebuffer.kext files in System>Library>Extensions was the fix. All problems disappeared.

  • Why are ITunes Library files stored on Buffalo Pro 1TB NAS being corrupted?

I'm having a flaky problem with the ITunes library files (Mac version) stored on a Buffalo NAS. Frequently, ITunes says the ITunes library file is damaged and creates a new one.
Moreover, there are temp files that ITunes apparntly creates that apparently become the new Library and XML files when ITunes shuts down. Apparently, this is done behind the scenes while ITunes is shutting down, but lately, these files are no longer being renamed or deleted. Often multiple temp files will accumulate.
Lastly, and most oddly, if I try to rename one of these temp files to ITunes Library based on best guess from size and date which is the ITunes Library file, it sometimes works, but it sometimes doesn't. When it doesn't, I will find a "phantom" ITunes Library file and ITunes Library.xml that cannot be selected, opened or deleted. They are greyed out in Finder. Since the file exists, a rename or copy will fail, saying a file already exists with that name, but I can't select it to delete it. Often when this happens, the actual file name seems to "flicker" between temp file and Itunes Library file. If I try to click on ITunes Library, it disappears, but a new temp file instantly appears. If I try to click on the temp file, that disappears and the ITunes Library file appears.
Rebooting the NAS fixes the phantom file problem. I delete all ITunes library and temp files, and reindex from ITunes, but it only starts all over again.
If I do the same process in Windows, ITunes will only find about 10% of my files and then stop. (I have about 16,500 tracks total.) Windows doesn't seem to have any probelms with "phantom" files.
Checks on the NAS disk array show no problems.
    Any thoughts?

  • Why do my pls files disappear when doubleclicked?

Someone asked me how to make an alias of a streaming radio station that they could just click, have it open iTunes and play.
While experimenting I found I could drag the radio station off the iTunes playlist to the desktop and it would create a URL. Doubleclicking the URL usually opened a browser, went to the site and downloaded a .pls file to the desktop. Doubleclicking that file opened iTunes and started playing the station.
Fine, I thought, I'll just rename the .pls file and use that as an alias to quickly get to the station. But alas, the .pls file disappears from the desktop once clicked, even if renamed and/or put into a folder.
I explained what I did to the person who originally asked and they were able to rename the files and not have them disappear on their Mac like mine did. Both of us are using 10.4.11.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Try showing the import options and make sure the crop option you want to use is one that is not grayed out.
