ITunes U Setting: Episodes to Keep

Question

I was expecting this setting (Episodes to Keep: All Unplayed Episodes) to purge all watched episodes. I was expecting this to occur at the same time the program checks for new episodes but that is not the case.
Perhaps I am a bit impatient but does anyone know when the deletion of watched episodes occurs (weekly, monthly)?

Ah, sorry, I was a bit basic in my answer really.
I was thinking in terms of the settings for the iPod, which you can (usually) see when the iPod is connected to iTunes by clicking on the device and looking on the Podcasts pane. Unfortunately, I cannot see that pane at the moment because selecting it causes my iTunes to close. (Several people are having this problem but so far there appears to be no one solution to it.)
So, *keep all episodes* on iPod (looking at the Podcasts pane) affects what stays on the iPod. In iTunes, the settings on the Podcasts section should affect what stays in iTunes/on your computer.
I don't use the auto delete from iTunes feature, but it should work as I said - after listening fully to the episode.
If all else fails though, carry on as you are, by manually deleting episodes.
