ITunes unable to burn to a 'recognized' external drive

Hello,
I am trying to burn a CD from iTunes 6 to an Iomega Predator USB external CD-RW burner. It is recognized by iTunes (and shows up as the burner under Advanced Preferences) but will not burn a CD.
The "error" message I get is "iTunes can't burn this CD because the burn speed is too fast for your CD burner or media." I have tried a CD-R and CD-RW, and I have set the burning speed to 1x, 2x & 4x. I have also tried the patch, but it says it is not necessary. I have also tried different play lists.
I am running an iBook 500, 10.3.9. Any suggestions?? (Any other questions for me?)
Thanks

imho your problems are related to burning through USB 1.1: USB 1.1 is rather slow and USB support is rather weak compared to burning through FW.

  • ITunes Not Recognizing External Drive when Shuffle is Connected

I recently bought an external hard drive and transferred most of my ITunes library to the drive. I also directed ITunes to find all songs in the external drive. The external drive has generally worked well. However, whenever I connect my Shuffle to my computer's USB port, ITunes becomes unable to locate my song library. When I look in my external hard drive folder, my entire library's missing. But if i unplug the shuffle and restart my computer, all the files are visible again, and ITunes has no problem locating them. Does anyone know what is going on and how I can fix this problem? Thanks.

It sounds like maybe the shuffle and the external hard drive are trying to use the same drive letter. Try changing the drive letter of the shuffle. If you change the letter of the drive iTunes will have problems finding your songs.

Tell us more about your computer and software.  All we see is it is an iMac which could be over 12 years old and running software that is 10 system versions out of date.
Have you tried a premium brand of CDs?  Slower burn speed?

  • HT1766 I wish to move my iTunes library from my PC to an external drive to make room on my PC. How do I do this?

I wish to move my iTunes library from my PC to an external drive to make room on my PC. How do I do this?

    The following may help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
Note the following fine print therein:
Note: If you move your library to an external drive, you'll need to power up and connect the drive before starting iTunes. If you don't, iTunes will prompt you to either locate the library or to create a new library (which will result in an empty library). No matter what, it's always a good idea to have a backup of the media you have in iTunes.

  • HT1751 Why can't iTunes handle a music library on an external drive?

I put all my music files on an external drive and imported them into iTunes. So far so good. The first time you run iTunes while the drive is disconnected - all your songs suddenly have that dreaded exclamation point next to them. Yes, while the drive is connected, I can still go to any song and double-click it to play; but the vast majority of songs stays "exclamated" and greyed-out. Shuffle ignores them. Even if I use some method to re-recognize all my songs, next time I open iTunes without first attaching the drive, it'll all go down the drain again.
Apple - this MacBook air is great but it only comes with 256 GB of built-in storage. I HAVE to use an external drive in order to have my music library. Why can't the MacBook recognize the drive, remember it, and know when it's connected and when it isn't?

If you mistakenly open iTunes with the drive disconnected, close iTunes, connect the drive, open iTunes, then visit iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and reset the media folder to the external drive.
Better yet is to move the iTunes library folder into the root of the external drive as <Device>/iTunes, then connect to it by holding down option as you start iTunes. Once iTunes "knows" your library is on the external drive it will complain of a missing library when you try to start with the drive disconnected. Cancel the warning, connect the drive, start iTunes.
For maximum portability you should set the media folder to <Device>/iTunes/iTunes Media and consolidate the media to that folder. You should then backup the drive to another for security.

Select the desired location in preferences, then consolidate the media files to it.

  • How can i get itunes to find my music on my external drive?

How can I get Itunes to find my music on my external drive?

has been resolved. Got thye .xml files transferred over

  • Can I have iTunes music on my SSD and an external drive? How will this affect syncing to iOS devices?

I don't have space to keep my entire iTunes library on my SSD. Currently I have my iTunes library split as follows:
SSD: Contains a subset of music, apps, books, etc. New items usually get added here.
External HD: Contains all of my music and iTunes media (including apps... so many apps). It's usually missing the most recent items added, due to the fact I don't plug it in so often.
I ran into a problem maintaining these two libraries earlier while syncing my iPhone. When I tried to sync the iPhone with the SSD library, it would delete apps off of my phone because they weren't contained in the iTunes library there, even though I had the same base .itl file for both the SSD and the external libraries.
What I want to do is set it up so that I maintain a core of music on my SSD and the stuff I don't listen to as often on my external hard drive. I also want to keep all the space hogs (movies, apps, etc) on the external as well. However, I want this to appear as one seamless iTunes library and I DON'T EVER WANT ANYTHING DELETED FROM MY PHONE WHEN I SYNC IT. I want to be able to sync my phone without worrying that apps will be deleted and I'll have to restore them from iCloud and reset all the settings, sign in, etc. Right now I am backing up to iCloud, but my understanding is that iTunes will still delete things from my phone if they are not available in the library.
My question: How do I accomplish this? I have a lot of metadata in my iTunes library that I don't want to lose (playcounts, ratings, etc).
I currently have this:   SSD: .itl file pointing to music on the SSD, a mixture of iTunes media (some that I want easily accessible, some I don't)
External drive: .itl file pointing to music on the external drive, all of my iTunes media (except for anything I may have added to the SSD)
I think I need this:       SSD: .itl file pointing to music on the SSD and the external, music that I listen to often
External drive: music that I don't listen to often, things that take up a lot of space
My thought process is that I will need to somehow move music from the external to the SSD while maintaining the pointers so that iTunes knows where they are. For this I have unchecked "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding To Library," and to maintain the pointers and move the songs, I'm thinking of using Doug's Applescripts for "Relocate Selected:" http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected
Once I have the songs split across these drives, I'm going to copy the .itl file from the external to the SSD and boot it up to see if it works.
Two things: 1.) Will this approach work? Can I maintain my library across separate drives this way and have it be seamless? I understand I won't be able to access the media on my external hard drive when it is not plugged in (duh), but...
2.) Will it affect syncing? When my external isn't plugged in, will iTunes try and delete things from my iPhone? It should still be able to "see" them, it just won't be able to access them. Will I have to turn off syncing apps while syncing with my external device unplugged?
Thanks very much for any help and insight! It is greatly appreciated as I deal with limited storage space and an expanding iTunes library.

This is all just a partial answer since details will depend upon how you want to do it.

  • I have my iTunes Library on and external hard drive.  I have a new computer and want to use iTunes and KEEP my files on the external drive.

My iTunes library is on an external hard drive, and I was able to access / add to the library from my windows laptop.
I now have a new laptop, and want to be able to KEEP the library on the external drive while being able to use iTunes from the new laptop.
I have selected "choose library" in iTunes, and have chosen the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.
My media populates in iTunes on the new laptop version of iTunes, but when I click on a song iTunes says that it cannot locate the song.
    Your help is kindly appreciated!

Thanks.  Were the settings shown in your last screenshot in force when you added the song that's shown on being on the C: drive?  It is also possible that at some point you ran iTunes with the external drive disconnected, in which case it will have defaulted to the library on the C: drive, or that you've run iTunes without explicitly selecting the library on the E: drive.  To make sure the latter is the case, hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes, then when you get this prompt:
click on Choose Library..., navigate to the location of your current iTunes Library.itl file, and click Open.
Part of your issue may that its not obvious where that current database file is located.  The folder layout on your E: drive isn't the one that's most easily managed - so its possible that the database file could be in:
    E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes
    E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes\iTunes
    E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes\iTunes 1
I suggest that a lot of your issues can be addressed by reshaping your library into the reliable "portable" layout as described in tt2's Make a split library portable user tip.  Comparing your screenshot with the equivalent on my system (where I have a "well-formed" library on an external drive):
    where:
there is just one iTunes folder with everything used by iTunes inside it
all media is held within subfolders of the iTunes Media folder
The way you have yours set up, where the iTunes Media Folder location is set to E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes rather than E:\xxxx\Files\iTunes\iTunes Media is probably why some of your media is not being located correctly - the extent to which iTunes can correctly resolve locations is, to an extent, reliant on the folders for the different media kinds (Music, Audiobooks, etc.) being inside the iTunes Media media folder.  One common misunderstanding (not helped at all by Apple's documentation!) is that the iTunes Media Folder location setting in Edit > Preferences > Advanced does not tell iTunes where to find anything; rather it determines where iTunes will put new additions to your Library, in conjunction with the Copy files to iTunes Media folder ... flag:
I would definitely take the time to work through the steps to bring your library into the "portable" shape - there may be few remaining issues with broken links when that's complete but this will be much easier to fix if your library is in a more standard structure.

  • Itunes won't play music stored on external drive after upgrade to 10.5.3

I updated to 10.5.3 with music files stored on external drive. iTunes shows all music, but will not play. I did have the library file stored locally-I'm not sure if this is why the files all show in Itunes. Music files are about 40gb so I don't have space on my MBpro to store files locally without lag.
When I click a song to play nothing happens. I've read a bunch of other discussions but the only option I've seen is to delete the library and start over. I have a bunch of playlists so I don't want to lose that data and I would rather not have to go to each playlisty and export and import again. Suggestions?

  • My Library has disappeared. iTunes doesn't see my music on external drive

I use a work computer so I have been using an external drive to store my iTunes Library. It's been working fine for the last couple of months, but for some reason this evening when I launched iTunes, my library was empty and an iTunes pop-up window appeared that said:
The iPod “my iPod” is synced with another iTunes library. An iPod can be
synced with only one iTunes library at a time. What would you like to do?
“Erase and Sync” replaces the contents of this iPod with the contents of
    this iTunes library.
“Transfer Purchases” copies iTunes Store purchases this computer is
authorized to play from this iPod to this iTunes library.
The pop up window had three buttons that read: "Cancel", "Erase and Sync", and "Transfer Purchases."
There haven't been any changes to the configuration of my computer that I'm aware of, and when I search for my external drive using "My Computer" I don't have a problem locating my external drive and seeing the music files.
How can I fix this problem without making it worse? I don't want to "Transfer Purchases," because I'm pretty sure this will simply create a second Library and make matters worse. Can anyone help me?

Did you save a copy of the itunes database ITL file? that is what itunes uses to find the paths to your music.
Also, you don't need to move one folder at a time. You can drag the top-level folder into itunes, or use add > Folder.

I have moved my itunes files numerous times to new computers as I get one.  This last time I had everything running off an external drive, to conserve hard drive space on computer and hopefully from computer failure.  I need to move library over to new computer and get away from old computer that has Windows XP to the computer with windows 7.  After installing itunes on new computer and plugging in external to new computer, it finds all music and movies, etc., however, I can't seem to find the file that has the playlist info, play count, and to see where the backups of my iphone(s) are.  I have been working at this for days to no avail.  It may be right in front of my face but can't see where to find it.  HELP!!!!
